Book one of Greenway Range

Retired marine Sawyer Cain can't forget all he's seen and lost, but he can try to start over. Opening a gun range with his closest friends is the first step toward a new life—one where he finally buries the guilt he can't seem to shake. So much depends on the property he needs to buy…and the gorgeous but completely frustrating woman who refuses to sell it.

Hailey Thorne is done—with loss and with anything military, after the closest thing she had to an uncle died in Afghanistan. When Sawyer shows up on her porch he has military written all over him. He's one more in a long line of people who wants the land she inherited, and suddenly he's everywhere she goes. Hailey can't get the broad-shouldered, dirty-talking, dead-serious man out of her head. Or her life.

Sawyer's not above using his skills in the bedroom to try to convince her to sell, and Hailey is more than willing to let him. Their pleasure-only arrangement works…until emotions get in the way. But Sawyer has a secret he's convinced will have Hailey hating him forever, and Hailey's not willing to risk loving anyone she could lose.

And this book reminded me of how funny, smart and sexy a HelenKay Dimon book is! You’d better believe that I’m not going to let her books pass me by any more. The banter between the two main characters had me laughing out loud, and the relationships between all of the characters were real and heart-felt, and made you want to become invested in their stories long after the book ended. Well done, Ms Dimon, well done. So glad I got to read this latest one of yours and get re-acquainted with how fabulous you are!Hailey Thorne has lost more than the average person to the military way of life–both parents, friends, boyfriends, and most recently her would-be uncle Rob. So she’s decided no-more military men are allowed in her life now on. If only she could turn off her treacherous hormones! She’d inherited Rob’s large piece of land and had been absolutely bombarded with offers from developers, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and all sorts of crazy front men. She’s had no peace! It’s gotten so bad that she’s erected a high-wire fence around the perimeter with an alarmed gate. People have to announce themselves before they can even get onto the property now!The gate was also there to stop another problem that had been making her crazy. Her friend Jessica Mann had a bit of a stalker problem–her ex-boyfriend Pete wouldn’t take “get lost” seriously. She’d taken up residence with Hailey for security purposes, hoping to wait him out. And their third friend, Kat Fleming, had been Rob’s fiancée. After his surprise death in Afghanistan, they’d bolstered her up and helped her start her bakery in town–hoping to give her something to go on for. And surprisingly, it’d worked. Now it was time for Hailey to decide what to do with the land…and move on. But something was holding her back. What was the best choice; and what did Rob really want her to do? She was getting all mixed up in the details and the pile of offers and wasn’t able to see past it to what was really her dream. And then she starts getting calls from this Sawyer Cain that Rob had told her so much about–the one he was trying to set her up with. And this Sawyer seemed to think the land was his? WTF?Sawyer Cain just wants to forget the hell he left behind in his last deployment in Afghanistan and create the family that he’s always wanted with his sister and best friends Marcus and Jason McAdams. His plans to set up a gun range on Rob’s property with them and create their own little place was high on his list of priorities now that he was retired. However, it didn’t seem like Rob had relayed their plans to his “niece” Hailey before he’d died. And Sawyer didn’t think she was going to take his word for it. He had a bloodstained and torn up piece of paper that could prove it, but it was the last thing he wanted to show her. It would prove his claim, but it also would be a painful reminder of Rob’s death. Since he already blamed himself for Rob’s death since he hadn’t been on site when it happened, he felt it would also cement the blame she was looking to place on him.Let’s just imagine that these two meet up in a bar, and he doesn’t know who she is. Sparks fly and chemistry ignites. Let’s talk SUPER-NOVA hot. Amazingly hot banter. Then “Sue” leaves a disgruntled and surprised Sawyer at the bar. Next time he decides to show up at Rob’s niece’s house to discuss the property, there’s “Sue”! Hmm…this might be more difficult than he thought. It’s hard to talk business when all he can think about is pleasure…Hailey isn’t sure that Sawyer isn’t trying to romance her for the land. Sawyer can’t see past his survivor’s guilt and his lust for Hailey to figure out how to handle this negotiation. Pleasure before business? Business before pleasure? Neither one can decide and the clock is ticking on the permits Sawyer needs to get approved. Will he have to give them and the land up to prove to Hailey that his love is the real deal? This book is deliciously hot and heated, Sawyer is edible, the sexy scenes are to die-for, and the development of the plot was well done if a tiny bit drawn out. I can’t wait for the next book with Molly and Jason! Thanks!

The interaction between them really felt like the 'family' they wanted to be. I had trouble understanding why Hailey didn't want to listen to Sawyer's proposal for the use of some of the property she inherited. Her reluctance to discuss his proposal in the beginning of their relationship, especially his connection to Ray, didn't make much sense to me. But I liked the journey to the end and the set up of the other characters for the next book. I have already pre-ordered the next installment.

This book had me from page 1 By heidi I was gifted a copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts opinions and a review.Chain Of Command is the first book in Greenway Range series,This was a first for me and reading a new author you kind of get your hopes up that the book will be as good if not better than the reviews and from the first page i just new it was just that.Sawyer Cain is a Retired marine and he can never ever forget all he's seen and what he has tragically lost, but he can start over again and help his friends. By Opening a gun range with his closest pals and this is the first step toward a new and better life where he can finally bury the guilt he cannot seem to shake of.But allot now depends on this amazing property he needs to buy like now… Sawyer has a problem and she happens to be the gorgeous and ever so frustrating woman who refuses to sell it to him.Hailey Thorne is so done with all the loss she has had and anything at all to do with the military, after the closest thing she ever had to an uncle passes away tragically in Afghanistan. And know with Sawyer showing up on her porch he has military written all over his gorgeous body. He is just one more in an extremely long line of people who want the land she has inherited, and know he's everywhere she goes she cant get away from this handsome military man. and of course Hailey just can't get this broad shouldered, dirty-talking, sexy, serious man out of her head. Or her life. But does she really want too?Sawyer is not above using all his well earned skills in the bedroom to try to convince her to sell, and Hailey is more than willing to let him after all why would she want to stop him. Their arrangement of pleasure-only really works well for them both… well that is until emotions get in the way.Sawyer has a secret and he is convinced that is will have Hailey hating him forever, and Hailey she is stubborn and not willing to risk loving anyone she could lose.O my what a great book from the moment i started reading page one i was a goner HelenKay Dimon is such a great writer. i was truly amazed the characters, they are just so real and likeable, and the sex scenes are sizzling just read this bit from the book that i picked out to show case how great HelenKay really is." Yank, the Army Weekly was a military publication sold to deployed soldiers during World War II. George Baker, a former Disney animator, was drafted into the army at the beginning of the war. He created The Sad Sack, which was a comic strip depicting a luckless soldier's misadventures in the army. This comic strip was the most popular feature of the magazine, surpassing the popularity of the pin-ups. The Sad Sack appeared in every issue of Yank and eventually became a syndicated comic strip after the war ended. This book contains each Sad Sack comic strip published in the 1942 issues of Yank magazine.

Thank You By TJ7109md Sometimes you just want to read a story without all of the over hyped sex scenes and ridiculous dialogue that most people never say when they are in the heat of the moment. I honestly find myself skipping over what so many writers use in a pathetic attempt to cover their true lack of skill - writing a romance story with good character development and a solid and entertaining story line that pulls you in. Thanks to this author for showing that you can present an entertaining story without over the top raunchiness. The simple hint of a sexual encounter is sufficient for this reader to use my own imagination to create my own visual. I hope more authors will generate more 'clean' IRR stories for readers such as myself. Don't get me wrong, a bit of eroticism is fine and enjoyable when it is done tastefully and not in excess.

I was so entertained that I spent most of the night and part of the morning reading it. As a matter of fact, finishing the book in one sitting. I'm exhausted but it was well worth the lack of sleep! Executive Decision was a well written, completely flushed out, romance novel. Might I also add that it was HOT! The intimacy scenes within the book did not seem forced but were worked flawlessly into the flow of the book. This was my first introduction to this author but I'm already adding her to the list of authors I'll 1-click. Yes...it was that good!

I was so in love with Scott...a man who suffered great losses, was able to find his way and light in Tasha. Tasha's is a battered land abused single mom determined to make it on her own ,fiercely independent, always on the defensive....but,...Scott broke through all the barriers to prove that she can love and trust again.

A young adult paranormal romance series.  An epic journey.  If the Seventine are released, will anyone survive?  With the convergence date looming closer, Abigail’s in the final countdown to imprison the Seventine. It is do-or-die time, and she is determined that the Seventine will be the ones who die, figuratively speaking. Her current priorities: gather the Dronish half-Walker female and reform her melding bond with Brace. Dronish is a world more alien than any other Abigail has ventured through, which is really saying something. But it’s also a dying land. The inhabitants are running out of energy and there’s little hope for their survival. Of course, that makes it very hard to convince Sapha – the half-Walker – that she should help save the star system. If her world is doomed already, she doesn’t care much about the rest. Okay, task one is going to be tougher than Abigail anticipated, but at least reforming the bond should be easy … right? Of course, that was before she met with the lalunas. Now she knows that both items on her to-do list have jumped right into the realm of impossible.

"attention all readers be prepared to have a walker universe sized heart attack!" Reading dronish is like eating a roll of chocolate chip cookie dough, smothered in awesomesauce, and then dusted with unicorn glitter. You have outdone yourself this time and I'm super excited for Earth. The cliffhanger you gave at the end of dronish will haunt me until the next book.

I was supposed to be packing up my apartment to move the past few days but I have read all six books in the series instead!I was fascinated about Ms. Eve's description of the Dronish world. I wish there was a bit more character development of the half walkers introduced in this book (Sapha) and book 5 (Delane). I also wish there was a bit more of Sapha's inner conflict mentioned in the summary. She only says her world isn't worth saving since it is already dying once or twice...it is not a major roadblock to Abby's mission. Those couple of criticisms aside, it's rare you find a series that has so many characters you genuinely care about. Characters grow on you as they grow on the protagonist (ex: Fury) so you feel like you are experiencing new relationship developments with Abby and friends. One advantage to starting. Series late is that I only have one more book to wait for and it will be out later this year! I am anxious to see if my prediction as to who the 7th half walker is. If I am right, it is someone who had an impact on Abby and we haven't seen her since book 1.I highly recommend this series, as well as this author's Supernatural Prison series!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Dronish - Alive and Well! By ExtremelyPicky2 I've been impatiently waiting for Dronish. Not only was it well worth the wait, Jaymin Eve released it early. It's great. I loved it! You can almost feel how the characters have grown little by little over the span of the books. One of the big secrets that has been building through the series was revealed to all. Someone disappears, someone reappears (kind of) and more 'what the hey moments' with plenty of action. Not sure if Brace's mother can be trusted. Love Abby and Brace. Gotta love Fury. Looking forward to reading Earth although I don't want the series to end.

Which is great, we follow Caren Sanders after a quick divorce from her Oil Tycoon husband. Said husband cheated on Caren with her cousin and preceded to dump her in favor of a co-worker. Once a cheater always a cheater rings true here.Caren throws a dart at the map and ends up in Bear's Den Wyoming. She arrives in the winter during snow fall. Cabin fever sets in quick for her in a span of a few days, even with the dog. While peeking in boxes left by the previous owner, she pretty much gets hit in the face about the supernatural tendencies of Bear's Den: Bear books, bear pictures, bear figurines, and Bear Shifter 101.It's a paranormal romance so I won't divulge Clyde's supernatural side, but like most short build up romances, they are drawn to each other by 'mate' tendencies.I'm not sure which chapter we finally learn the MCF's (main character female) name. If it weren't in the blurb, I wouldn't have known it for a while. While the premise was good, there was a lot of upfront, stated information that reads like a transcript at times. As a reader, it stood out that he needed another set of eyes or to put it down for a couple of months and come back to it.Without knowing a lot about the author, I can tell he didn't write a lot of female POVs, and that hurt how it read a little. It gets better the more he wrote. For a lazy afternoon, the book was a good read. If you're into paranormal romances, go for it. I hope the other book he has written progresses well.

But I also like that next book includes our hero and heroine. This story is about Clyde meeting his mate. This is a story about Caren finding the man who will love her forever.I enjoyed the little subplot of Maggie and Nick. Looking forward to the next story.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A feel good read By Linda Walker This book was what I like to call a feel good read. It is about a true love felt between two people and makes the reader believe that it is possible for all to find the one true love. Without a lot of drama in it, it is a story that makes you feel good about life.

After her mother’s death, Faith Hardwood’s father is determined to leave the memories behind. On the train to Denver, a rough-looking man captures Faith’s attention; the stranger compels her in a way she’s never known. When robbers beset the passengers, he comes to her aid. The damage is done however, as they are robbed of every penny—the money they needed to live on. Owen Birch, the stranger, has gambled his way to success, owning several hotels and saloons, including the Inter-Ocean Hotel in Denver. Traveling on business, he encounters a young woman, Faith, who takes his breath away. He can feel the weight of her interest, as her dark, expressive eyes linger on him. After the robbery, he generously gives Faith and her pa money, because they have lost everything. Two years later, life in the city isn’t what Faith had hoped it would be. Her pa’s rarely sober and a gambler, while she is a saloon girl, working for tips and hoping for a better life. At the faro table one evening, Faith sees the man she met on the train. He too recognizes her. Although fate has been unkind, Faith senses her luck is about to change. However, Owen isn’t the sort of man to settle down. He prefers to keep things simple. 10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic May December Romance By Reading Fanatic Wow! This little story bowled me over. I didn't know what to expect when I started reading. Truth be told, I tried to keep my expectations low, but wow! It's pretty amazing. It's the second in Ms. White's "Brides of the Rockies" series. The first book is Cassie (Brides of the Rockies Book 1). As far as I can tell, to date there are only two books in the series. In this story, there is a pretty big age gap between the characters; Faith is eighteen, Owen is thirty six. I usually prefer that there not be such a huge age difference between the h and H, but in this instance it didn't bother me at all. The age difference is referred to a few times in the story; for instance, Owen makes mention that he's too old for Faith, but it isn't really an issue for the couple. I really enjoyed Ms. White's writing style and for an for an e-book, the editing is par excellence. I can honestly say that I don't remember noticing a single misspelled or misused word. That's extremely rare with e-books, even those that are not self-published.In addition, the characters are all well developed and relatable. Faith is a wonderful heroine. She and her father travel west to start anew after her mother's death, but things don't turn out the way they expect, and Faith has to live with the hand which she has been dealt. She's strong, smart, determined, and loyal. Owen too is a wonderful hero. He has no interest in ever getting married; this determination stems from a bad childhood. Nevertheless, when he meets Faith he just can't resist her; he wants her with him forever. Unfortunately, the arrangement that Owen wants is not one with which Faith could ever be happy. The most amazing thing about this book is that it's written in the first person, and yet I hardly noticed. I hate first person account stories and typically avoid them like the plague. There have been a few instances where I've read a book told in the first person, and I've loved it, so I do TRY to remain open-minded; although it is hard. In this instance I can honestly say that it didn't bother me at all. As a matter of fact, although the story is told in the first person I never once felt as though I was missing out on what was going on with the rest of the characters. I still felt as though I knew Owen, I felt in tune with him and why he was the way he was. In my experience books told in the first person usually suffer from the huge drawback of not allowing the reader to really get to know any other character aside from the one who is telling the story...that did not happen here. It's magical the way Ms. White employs first person. I haven't experienced anything like it in a very long time, if ever.As stated in the book blurb, Faith and Owen meet when they are both traveling west by train. Faith is fascinated by the attractive Owen and finds her eyes being constantly drawn to him during the journey. When Faith and her father are robbed of all their valuables, Owen graciously gives them some money to prevent them having to live on the streets. Two years later, Faith and her father are now living in a small Denver town. Life is nothing like Faith expected; her father is a drunk and spends his time gambling away what little they have. The two live in a tiny room in a boardinghouse and Faith is forced to work as a saloon girl to eke out a living for the two of them. For those of you who are wondering, Faith is still an innocent. Her job entails bringing drinks to and providing companionship for the saloons patrons, no sex. Two years after the two had their first encounter, Owen shows up in the saloon where Faith works. They become reacquainted. Owen has never forgotten the young woman who first captured his attention on the train. He is captivated by Faith and asks her to be his mistress, but Faith wants a husband and children. Due to his horrible childhood, Owen doesn't think he'd make good husband material, plus he has no interest in settling down; he likes to travel around. Despite the fact that Owen assures Faith that he wants her with him forever, the two find themselves at an impasse as Faith is not willing to give up on her dreams...she's already had to give up so many. The story that unfolds is a beautiful one. Owen and Faith are wonderful together, and even when Owen was bent on gaining Faith as a mistress I was never in any doubt that he truly cared for her. Eventually, of course, all works out and the couple do achieve their HEA. FYI there is a love scene, but it's after marriage and there are minimal details provided; it's essentially clean. I loved this book, so much so that I immediately went and checked out Ms. White's Amazon page. Imagine my delight when I discovered that she has a few other books available for free here on Amazon. Oh, I also remembered that I've read one other book by her before A Mail Order Bride For Charlie (The Carson Brothers of Kansas Book 1). I read that book over a year ago and gave it 3 stars. This one, IMO, is a much, much better story.BTW for those of you who may be suspicious about the fact that my review is the only one so far and it's such a glowing one, no I am neither related to, nor acquainted with the author, nor was I given a copy in exchange for an honest opinion. I came by my copy on my own, free, compliments of searching the freebie section on Amazon. LOL Happy reading!

Drawing me in a firsthand witness to everything as it unfolds. Passion with some steam but written well enough to kept us wanting to linger with Faith more as her life unfolds and unravels... I so enjoyed every page!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sweet Story By C Patterson This is a sweet story about Faith and Owen. Faith's mother has died and the memories have forced her family to go west. Hard times follow but Faith makes the best of it as well she can. Owen has not forgotten the dark-haired beauty that he met on the train. He seeks her out as sparks fly. A sweet western historical novel.

Enevoldsen Very intriguing for such a short story, definitely made me want to read the rest of the story. Everything about the plot was very believable, but I feel if I were the heroine I would not have felt the same about the situation after he calls her towards the end (don't want to give away any spoilers). Other than that, a truly enjoyable quick read, looking forward to see how the story ends.

Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon are two of the most important and controversial figures of the twentieth century. Although fame came to them in very different ways, they rose from very similar backgrounds of poverty to seek the American Dream. These two remarkable men both had to face falls from grace, but while Nixon rebounded from Watergate to regain a reputation as a distinguished elder statesman, Elvis was destroyed by the pressures of fame, only to have his image restored after his death.

Here, for the first time, the remarkable parallels in their lives are examined, balanced on the point of their historic December 21, 1970, meeting. Their similarities and differences as American icons are analyzed, and numerous photographs, including all those taken during their meeting, are included. Together, the stories of these two men form part of the essence of American culture.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A lot of Nixon in an Elvis-book By ElvisNews.com This book by Connie Kirchberg and Marc Hendrickx examines thelives of two Americans fulfilling the so-called AmericanDream. Both made it from rags to riches. There are a lot of similarities in the way these two persons made it to the top, but of course also differences. This book handles both. By writing the biographies of these two people who briefly met in December 1970, the authors try to paint a picture of two lives which seem to have a lot more in common then expected. For us, more familiar with Elvis than with Nixon, there were some interesting eye-openers on the last one. Although we couldn't get rid of the idea that some of the comparisons are a bit sought for. More interesting than the exact comparisons between the two man making it to the top in their own field (becoming 'The King' and the president of the USA), are the differences after making it to the top and what happened then.As we all know Elvis made it to the top and lost his spot at the top because of the addictions that led to his death. The last couple of years only his loyal fans kept him 'on top' by still buying his records and going to his shows (even if they were not the quality they once had).We also know the story of Richard Nixon, making it to the top of the (Capitol) Hill and tumbling down on the other side as a result of the 'Watergate' scandal. Both persons made a `comeback', and we're not referring to the TV special with the same name. But there are differences. Nixon became a 'respected elder statesman' and was rehabilitated in the eyes of the general public. He lived to enjoy that. Elvis' rehabilitation came after his death. There are three moments most people remember what they were doing when it happened: the first man on the moon, the shooting of Kennedy and the death of Elvis, this does say something on the man and his achievements. Unfortunately he wasn't able to enjoy it.A great pro of the book is that describing the lives of these two people from birth we also get a lot of information on Elvis parents, something which isn't seen in too many books and a nice extra for Elvis fans to complete their `picture' of Elvis' entire life. Another nice feature of the book is the appendix in which a lot of documents and pictures surrounding the Presley - Nixon meeting are presented...Our conclusion:'Elvis Presley, Richard Nixon, and the American Dream' is an interesting book since it goes into the backgrounds of the lives of two men we all know, the 'American Dream' is the red line used to tell the stories of these two people. These backgrounds add some interesting views on the youth of Elvis dealing with a lot of rumours surrounding his upbringing. Besides that, the view from which this book is written is different from other Presley-books which makes it also interesting. For those like us, primary interested in Elvis, we must mention there's a lot of `Nixon' in this book about Elvis' life and achievements, but we admit to be narrow-minded...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is a fun book! By Carrie L Fox Although my mom wrote this book, don't take my review as biased. It is just a really good book! Anyone who wants to know more about Elvis and Nixon should read this book. Although I am not much of a non-fiction reader, I found this book to be informative, enlightening, and a little bit amusing. The reason I say "amusing" is because picturing either of these so-call "distiguished" men doing the things described in this book is enough to give anyone a good chuckle. This book is a quick read, has great information, and is very well put together. The whole experiance of reading this book is fun!

It is an fine example of a compare-and-contrast writing project held carefully in focus based on the thesis, two major American entities and their manner of attaining “the American Dream.” (Everyone thinks he or she understands the American dream until invited to examine it!)2. The book deals with both controversial people and subject. As my students progressed through each chapter, I noted the way they began shedding former concepts about Elvis and Nixon (i.e. dead, boring, inept, bumbling) in their summaries and feeling their way toward new opinions. It was fascinating to watch.3. While the author(s) comes from a very neutral, studied point of view, supporting every point or claim with evidence, my student readers demonstrated increasing determination to make up their own minds about Elvis and Nixon, growing as inquisitive and critical thinkers. This is the goal of the well-written compare-and-contrast essay or book. No wonder it is in Harvard library!4. By the end of the reading, one student (a former Navy man) proclaimed Nixon one of the finest presidents the nation ever had. This was a 180 degree turn for him. Others expressed differing but equally strong and heartfelt opinions. One student had me get the author’s autograph because she had forgotten to do so!5. Connie Kirchberg kindly came into our class to answer questions about her long trek through each man’s life, how she and Mark hit upon their focus, how she became a published author and what that is like. She also showed rare footage of Elvis performing. I noticed several of my female students notably affected. Nothing like a true wade through history! Let’s do it again! One of my students was kind enough to allow us to post his reaction to the book on the Grassroots Writers Guild Blog:[...]

I agree with all key points By Book lover I have done run the gauntlet in public speaking from err, um, and giving way to stage fright five minutes into a forty-five minute speak to becoming so skillful at public speaking I've been paid to do it, but even then, I've not been skillful when two members of an audience talked during my talk or I've received a hostile question. All of the troublesome issues I've had when public speaking could have been resolved had I read a book such as this excellent one 'The Ultimate Public Speaking Survival Guide' by Ramakrishna Reddy, and done more preparation prior to stepping in to the stage.I loved and agreed with all of his key points. I've opened with humour and something personal after first engaging the audience and I agree, that's the best way to open. I'll eave the book to share all the rest of the great public speaking tips. This book is easy to read and covers all the main pointers to successful public speaking. Grab a copy and save yourself from being caught unprepared as to how to engage with an audience.

The Papers of Howard Washington Thurman is a multivolume, chronologically arranged documentary edition spanning the long and productive career of the Reverend Howard Thurman, one of the most significant leaders in the intellectual and religious life of United States in the mid-twentieth century. The first to lead a delegation of African Americans to meet with Mahatma Gandhi in 1936, Thurman later became one of the principal architects of the modern nonviolent civil rights movement and a key mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others involved in the movement. In 1953 Life magazine named Thurman one of the twelve greatest preachers of the century. In volume 3 (September 1943-May 1949), Walter Earl Fluker documents Thurman's founding and leadership of the Fellowship Church for All Peoples in San Francisco, California--the nation's first major interracial, interfaith church. The war years showed Thurman new possibilities and strains in American culture. He felt the war had led to a moral coarsening as evidenced by a willingness to accept things that had been intolerable in peacetime, an emphasis on destroying enemies--real and imagined--and the conviction that the only way to solve problems was through the use of force, a conviction that became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Amid the uncertainty of this period, Thurman embarked on his great interfaith experiment as pastor to a small group of dedicated and courageous people who were primarily middle class, with at least as many white as black people, in a city that in 1940s America was far from the mainstream of black life. His letters, essays, and sermons show Thurman struggling to define and maintain the interracial character and practice of Fellowship Church, building its programs and membership while constantly wrestling with financial and location problems and preserving its separation from other organizations, most notably the Communist Party and its adult education program, the California Labor School. Thurman was also becoming more of a national figure, partly a result of the attention given to the Fellowship Church in publications such as Time magazine, but also because he had begun to publish regularly. From his first book, The Greatest of These, it was only three years until his Ingersoll lecture at Harvard, "The Negro Spiritual Speaks of Life and Death," was offered by Harper. Two years later Thurman published what has proven his most enduring work, Jesus and the Disinherited, arguing that the key to understanding the religion of Jesus was his lack of Roman citizenship, a condition Thurman compared to the lives of southern black people, who, like Jesus, were effectively disinherited.

Quistgard This is the second book Ms. Lee has written and while I knew by the title that it likely was a biography I was surprised by the depth of the intimacies and passions she has revealed in this, her life’s journey. This may be a story that many women particularly will find endearing as they recognize parts of their own emotional and psychic growth from young girlhood through maturity. Ms. Lee writes from the perspective of a forever child of Nature both literally and figuratively and takes the reader on an always adventurous and winding path as she increasingly discovers and uncovers the wise and loving woman she has become. There is much poetry and prose scattered throughout and some of it is wonderful. I have the impression that the author has intentionally kept to a writing style that is more emotional and intuitive in its composition in order to express the deep presence of the Divine Feminine as that muse or wind that fills her sails. I found the book a delightful read and Ms. Lee’s rather original style of writing quite refreshing.

I find it so because it weaves the ordinary and extraordinary into the same pages. I have experienced some of the same imagery in my life and this hints that she has stumbled onto some much larger archetypal realities. This is for the ones whose minds are open on many levels, not for those too deeply rooted in the mundane.

A poetic telling of extraordinary experience By Amazon Customer A poetic and intimate look into the life experience of a woman who has dared to spread her wings and soar. Her experience and wisdom serves to remind us of our core connections to the earth, to each other, and to subtle energies that exists beyond our ordinary life experience.

Regarded as ancient Greece's greatest orator, Demosthenes lived through and helped shape one of the most eventful epochs in antiquity. His political career spanned three decades, during which time Greece fell victim to Macedonian control, first under Philip II and then Alexander the Great. Demosthenes' resolute and courageous defiance of Philip earned for him a reputation as one of history's outstanding patriots. He also enjoyed a brilliant and lucrative career as a speechwriter, and his rhetorical skills are still emulated today by students and politicians alike. Yet he was a sickly child with an embarrassing speech impediment, who was swindled out of much of his family's estate by unscrupulous guardians after the death of his father. His story is one of triumph over adversity. Modern studies of his life and career take one of two different approaches: he is either lauded as Greece's greatest patriot or condemned as an opportunist who misjudged situations and contributed directly to the end of Greek freedom. This biography, the first ever written in English for a popular audience, aims to determine which of these two people he was: self-serving cynic or patriot - or even a combination of both. Its chronological arrangement brings Demosthenes vividly to life, discussing his troubled childhood and youth, the obstacles he faced in his public career, his fierce rivalries with other Athenian politicians, his successes and failures, and even his posthumous influence as a politician and orator. It offers new insights into Demosthenes' motives and how he shaped his policy to achieve political power, all set against the rich backdrop of late Classical Greece and Macedonia.

Demosthenes of Athens and the Fall of Classical Greece, by Ian Worthington

Review "Informative and lively... Catchy chapter titles and subheadings elucidate and enhance this well-referenced explication of a complex historical period, as do the detailed chronology, catalogue of orations and comprehensive index... [A] masterful conversion of Demosthenes' convoluted rhetoric into a compelling narrative." --The Classical Journal

"'Look to the end', went the ancient Greek motto, and the suicidal end of Professor Worthington's subject was far from ignoble, like much of his actively democratic political life, which is here thoroughly investigated, persuasively estimated, and ultimately celebrated as that of one who stood bravely against tyranny." --Paul Cartledge, A. G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture, Cambridge University, and author of Ancient Greece: A Very Short Introduction

"This is a gripping story of Macedonian ascendance, Athenian retrenchment-and the efforts of a gifted, but flawed Demosthenes to reverse the course of history. In both accessible and erudite fashion, Ian Worthington guides us through the labyrinth of Greek and Macedonian politics, and the result is not only first-rate history, but lessons for any age--ours especially--when the fear of civilizational decline, and its supposed remedies, become near obsessions." --Victor Davis Hanson, Senior Fellow, Classics and Military History, the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and author of The Other Greeks and A War Like No Other

"Demosthenes' life is a powerful case study of the conflict between democracy and monarchy, and this book will be welcomed by both scholars and non-specialist readers because it is highly accessible, fair in its treatment of controversial issues, yet not afraid to state an opinion. A must-read for anyone interested in ancient politics and rhetoric." --Joseph Roisman, Professor of Classics, Colby College, and author of Alexander's Veterans and the Early Wars of the Successors

"Ian Worthington has recently written a very fine introduction to Demosthenes' career...an erudite but readable biography. It is sober, balanced, and analytical." --Barry Strauss, The New Criterion

"A most welcome addition to the extensive scholarly literature on this subject... I would strongly recommend this well-balanced, accessible and thorough monograph to scholars and non-specialist readers." --Bryn Mawr Classical Review

About the Author Ian Worthington is Curators' Professor of History and Adjunct Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Missouri and author of By the Spear: Philip II, Alexander the Great, and the Rise and Fall of the Macedonian Empire.

Still, a generation after the great defeat by Sparta, risen like Germany, she once more is the most influential of the cities. Sadly, in a two year attempt to tighten control over her latest empire, by about 350 she has spent nearly a billion dollars on war! (Think of this as a prosperous American city and county of about 500,00 like Lancaster Pa, where I live blowing that amount in 2 years). Also she has privatized the state silver mines and they now produce much less revenue for the citizens. Citizen attempts to regain state control are futile. The rich are increasingly exempt from taxes and, again, attempts to eliminate exemptions are futile. Political quarrels abound. Meantime, up the road, the Macedonians are buying off their neighbors and investing heavily in new (weapons) technology and rethinking how an army might be organized. When Athens finally wakes up, she's flattened by King Phillip, almost as an afterthought. In fact, I don't really believe in history repeating itself like this. When I was young it was all about Spengler and the flabbiness of the West, a thesis now forgotten. Nonetheless, I found this book intersting reading, indeed. History doesn't repeat, said Twain, but it DOES rhyme. Many classical geeks besides me, I'll bet can't much fill in the historical details between the death of Socrate and Alexander except in broad outline. Alexander and his exploits are well covered and so's the defeat of Athens in the war with Sparta, but the intervening period where the mainland and the Pelloponese goes down to Phillip is much less known. This fills a lacuna in my knowledge, at least. And it's a good extra to get an education in Demosthenes at the same time, so I'm happy with this way of telling the story. Also, though I've got over 120 of the Loeb volumes collected and read through time, none of Demosthenes at all. So it's a good peek at him and the Athenian litigation at this time. I wasn't so interested, though, that I'd go out and buy and read his collected works for it's own sake.Speaking of the litigation, though I've got some sources on Athenian law, I think this book would have been helped by an introduction sketching the system, particularly as it is relevant to the sorts of cases Demosthenes was involved in rather than explaining it piecemeal as the story develops.P.S., I don't want to parse the criticism by another reviewer of the book as object. I was most pleased to find the footnotes at the bottom of the page as opposedto, as is now customary, at the inaccesable rear. The black and white illustrations are quite muddy, which is simply not necessary these days, if it ever was. The forensic reconstruction of Phillip's face based on the skull fragments which was fascinating, would have been even more so were it not so smudged. (Many academic presses give little thought to book quality and I'm going to digress to say that I just got John Updike's last art crit book for $35 which is treasure and that volume surely had much more royalties etc than Oxford UP with this one. Actually, Oxford and Cambridge are among the worst at book production. (Well, I wander....)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Scholarly, academic biography of classical Greek orator Demosthenes and history of the Macedonian conquest of Greece By E. Jaksetic In the history of rhetoric, Demosthenes of Athens (circa 384-322 B.C.) was considered to be one of the great classical orators. This biography examines his life in the context of his involvement in Athenian social and political life, the contentious rivalries of the various Greek city-states, and King Phillip II of Macedonia's rise to power and later conquest of the Greek city states. Although the author disclaims any intent to focus on Demosthenes as an orator, the author does discuss Demosthenes's use of rhetoric as a public figure involved in Athenian domestic politics and in Athenian policy with respect to other Greek city-states and foreign countries. The author provides a scholarly look at the life and times of Demosthenes that cites many primary and secondary sources. The author occasionally seeks to explore the motivations of Demosthenes and other people involved in the various events discussed. While the author's surmises and speculations about the motivations of Demosthenes and others are occasionally interesting and thought-provoking, such explorations are generally speculative in nature because of the sketchy and incomplete nature of the historical record. Although thoughtful and intriguing, the author's conjectures and extrapolations are not an adequate substitute for supporting documentary evidence. This book is scholarly in style and tone, and probably would not be satisfying to readers looking for more casual biographies or histories. Readers interested in the history of classical rhetoric might find it worthwhile as a source of information about the circumstances and contexts in which Demosthenes used rhetoric. Because the book focuses on Demosthenes, persons primarily interested in the rise of King Phillip II of Macedonia and his conquest of the Greek city-states should read this book in conjunction with other pertinent publications.

By Wabbit98 It was a time of change in Ancient Greece, Alexander the Great was on the upswing and Athens was on the downward spiral. In that mix rose a group of orators, and politicians, that would usher in a new age; a period of time that they wanted to avoid. In this new work by Ian Worthington, which is written for a general audience, he takes us through the world of Demosthenes and his life and times. From his early childhood where his family spent all his money; to his slow rise through the law courts of Athens, and his eventual breakout in the political world. His early speeches advocated a sensible foreign policy, which would keep Athens away from disastrous wars. It was only with the rise of Philip, the father of Alexander, that he would change his stance. His surviving speeches all attack Philip, and put Athens on top of the mountain. But things could not stay the same forever, and eventually Philip won the day. But Demosthenes would live longer than either Philip or Alexander, only killing himself instead of being executed.Mr. Worthington acknowledges that this is not the easiest biography to write; with a lack of primary sources, and the few surviving ones are not exactly balanced and fair. But he does an excellent job of placing Demosthenes in his proper context in the larger world of geopolitical politics.
