The Right to Be Rich WHATEVER may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with. A man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich. The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining. Man’s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich. In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way; to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little. No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more. The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power; elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful. The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants. Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness. Every person naturally wants to become all that they are capable of becoming; this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be. Success in life is becoming what you want to be; you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them. To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge. There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich. The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is praiseworthy. The man who does not desire to live more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man who does not desire to have money enough to buy all he wants is abnormal. There are three motives for which we live; we live for the body, we live for the mind, we live for the soul. No one of these is better or holier than the other; all are alike desirable, and no one of the three--body, mind, or soul--can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression. It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny mind or body; and it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body or soul. We are all acquainted with the loathsome consequences of living for the body and denying both mind and soul; and we see that real life means the complete expression of all that man can give forth through body, mind, and soul. Whatever he can say, no man can be really happy or satisfied unless his body is living fully in every function, and unless the same is true of his mind and his soul. Wherever there is unexpressed possibility, or function not performed, there is unsatisfied desire. Desire is possibility seeking expression, or function seeking performance.

The Science of Getting Rich, by Wallace D Wattles

Review "...His is a gentle philosophy which excludes competition and cheating, and encourages cooperation." -- Publishers Weekly

From the Publisher This classic Wallace D. Wattles title has often been compared to Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, and many believe they act as excellent companion titles. Individuals who have read books by Robert Allen, Suze Orman or David Bach will find often find this title to as well be of interest.

From the Author The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants.

In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down herein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment; it works. If you wish to know how the conclusions were arrived at, read the writings of the authors mentioned above; and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.

THIS BOOK WILL TRANSFORM YOUR MIND & YOUR LIFE By Happy Bunny Ladies and Gentlemen, this book will without any doubt change your life, by changing your mind about the concept of "money". So many of us were brought up with the idea of money as a finite resource, which you had to compete for. This book is desgined to release every preconcieved idea that is holding us all back from wealth. The basic premise of this book is that becoming wealthy is a science, that once understood, and replicated will create wealth in everyone's life. Wealth is as infinite as the creative mind. Create ideas, take action and abundance will flow.I have read over 200 books on success and wealth, before I read this book. Nothing I had read upto this point had such an incrediblely profound effect on my wealth, because it changed my misconceptions on what it took to become wealthy. Within ten months of applying these principles and concepts, I had expedentially increased my income to levels that would had been unthinkable 12 months earlier.I would reccomend that every student of this book, also read, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Money is Easy by Larry Winget, The Einstien Factor Wenger & Poe, Psyco Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz & Born Rich by Bob Proctor. All these books will enhance your understanding of this incredible book. The ideas and concepts, once studied and applied will transform your mental approach to money. This is a book that will take you a day to read, but a life-time to understand fully. Give it serious study, and I guarantee you success

Practical, Hands-on Assistance; and Many Original Ideas By A Customer This new release is a reprint of the original 1910 edition of Wallace Wattles' guide to financial success and personal growth. Make sure that you get the new 2002 Iceni Books edition, and not some of the other versions that are around, which have been made unusable by editing. Wattles' book is a true classic in the genre, and it has been mentioned along with such other classics like George Clason's "The Richest Man In Babylon" and Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich." It was always a surprise to me, that this book, in full original title "The Science of Getting Rich or Financial Success Through Creative Thought," is less well-known than the titles mentioned above. While Clason's book, in the essence, is a tale about the workings of exponential growth, and Hill's book is little more than the repetition of the formula, "whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve," in Wattles' book there is much more to be found.Wattles, like Hill, also emphasizes the importance of using one's power of thought, and one's willpower, as an indispensable ingredient on the way to get rich. But Wattles with his suggestions is way ahead of Hill, because he does not think exclusively along egoistical lines, as does Hill. Throughout the book he warns the reader of acquiring riches in a competitive way, and strongly advises to do any business in a creative way instead. He asserts that the reader should never compete for what is already there, but should instead create something of value, be it a product, or a service. This thought alone is a revelation. Wattles makes unmistakably clear that only in that way it is possible for everyone to get rich. Instead of keeping others down by competition, if you strive to get rich in a creative way, you inspire other people to do so as well, and open up a way for others to follow.Besides this thought, which is original in how to get rich, and self-help literature, Wattles has much other original, yet always practical, advice for his readers, like how to best get into the right business, how to direct thoughts and actions purposefully, how to convey the impression of personal growth, and much more. I am issuing here, however, some kind of a warning to you: Wattles grounds his science on the ideas of oriental philosophies, which state that there exists one original substance in the universe, where all things originate from. To back up that notion, he mentions that this idea was also held by many western philosophers, like Hegel, and Emerson, and requires the reader to accept the truth of this notion by faith. I cannot say that I am a believer in the one substance, and still, I have learned some of my most important lessons from Wattles. So do not be put off by that esoteric concept, but concentrate instead on the solid foundations of financial and personal success that Wattles hands over to you. I am convinced that Wattles in this book says all that you need for success.

Yep -- The Best Ever By Bible Belt Unbuckler I watched the first twenty minutes of the DVD of "The Secret" (it's offered free on their website), and thought it was really hokey. It felt like they were trying to make a "Da Vinci Code" production out of it. To my knowledge, no "authorities throughout history" have ever tried to keep "the Secret" (i.e., the Law of Attraction) from humanity. But I was curious about the book that inspired "The Secret's" creator, so I checked out Wallace Wattles' "The Science of Getting Rich."Wow! And Super-Wow! Wattles has nailed all the self-help books (all the great ones anyway) that I've ever read and put it all in one slim volume. And I can state confidently, "This is the foundational book for fulfilling your life. You'll never need to read another one about 'getting the life you want.'"For those of you who doubt, or just plain ridicule, the idea that you can get what you want by simply focusing on it and ceasing to focus on what you DON'T want, I recommend this experiment:For one week, carry two little notepads with you, everywhere you go. Each notepad should have a different colored cover so they're easily identifiable. Label one "Positive" and the other "Negative."As you go through your week, every time you hear, see or feel something positive in your surroundings, put a check mark in the "Positive" notepad. Every time you hear, see or feel something negative in your surroundings, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad. Do this for EVERYTHING you take in, whether it involves you personally or not--chats with friends, news reports, conversations you overhear on the bus, etc. If you're taking it in, put a checkmark in the appropriate notepad.Be sure, especially, to include all the entertainment you see or hear. Be conscious of the story, the lyrics, etc. Is the message negative about life no matter how hilarious or thought-provoking it is? (A great example would be "Borat.") If so, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad. At the end of the week, total the checkmarks in each notepad. If you have more negative checkmarks than positive ones (and I suspect you'll have many more), ask yourself how you can possibly get ANYTHING you want from life when you're taking in all that negativity, day after day? The answer is, you can't--because you don't have the Life Energy for it. All that negativity is draining it out of you.By focusing only on what your heart desires, and believing unconditionally that those things are yours to have, you connect to the Universe which gave you those desires in the first place, and intends for you to fulfill them, in the name of Creation. As Wattles says again and again, the Universe wants you to have these things even more than you do. But you can't connect to the Universe as long as you're filling your head with the noise and negativity of the outside world."The Science of Getting Rich" will show you exactly how to "tune out and tune in," so you can have the wonderful life you were created for.Give it a try. The only thing you've got to lose is a life you never wanted in the first place.

In 1897 three men disappeared in the North Pole—only now have their final hours been revealed with this award-winning forensic investigation of a 120-year-old mystery On July 11th, 1897, three men set out in a hydrogen balloon bound for the North Pole. Led by engineer August Soloman Andrée, they want to make history, but are frighteningly underprepared. Three days into their journey they make a crash landing and disappear into a white nightmare. They never return. 33 years later, the men's bodies and equipment are found buried beneath the snow and ice on a deserted glacier. They had enough food, clothing, and ammunition to survive. Why did they die? 100 years later, Bea Uusma is at a party. She pulls a book off a shelf about the Andrée Expedition. For the next 15 years, Bea will think of nothing else. This is her journey to uncover the truth.

The Expedition, by Bea Uusma

Review 'Uusma's tenacity has produced real results and by the artless vulnerability with which she reveals her own foibles and the artful way in which she weaves together history, research and self-revelation into something of genuine substance' The Times. 'A masterpiece' Aftonbladet. 'A fascinating, seriously entertaining book' Helsingborgs Dagbladet. 'I read it in one sitting. You just can't put it down' Nerikes Allehanda. 'Not just an exploration book or a detective story but an intriguing experiment in literary non-fiction, THE EXPEDITION is playful in its typography and layout, with every page designed and not just typeset. But its whimsy is always purposeful, and the book earns its right both as documentary and as memoir to the attention of exploration enthusiasts of any taste' Times Lierary Supplement. 'This beautifully written adventure story is a blend of memoir and poetic investigation, packed with maps, photographs, lists and journal entries' The Simple Things.

About the Author Bea Uusma started investigating the Andrée expedition while completing her medical degree. She was awarded the August Prize for best non-fiction book for The Expedition.

By Gerard Lebar I've never written anything on here before, because, frankly, I've never been compelled to. But after putting the finishing touches on "The Expedition" last night, I wanted to do my part in spreading the word of this gem of a tale.I happened upon this book in large part due to its cover. It is beautiful, yet haunting; both a cry for help and a calm reassurance. The cover alone isn't worthy of our continued devotion though, the promise of love however, in my opinion, is. "The Expedition," for all its priceless imagery, unwavering investigation, and compelling mystery, is, at its core, a story of love. And if it does sweet justice to any one virtue, if not all, it is the ever-illusive love. After having spent the last year of my life in northwestern Greenland, I understand - to some, small degree (as much as the comforts of modern technology allow) - the struggles of the Arctic, those that captivate the reader in this mystery throughout. Ms. Uusma does a fine job narrating a rather, evasively complex experience. Her commitment to truth is uncompromising. Although faced with great adversity in uncovering something many have given up on, she stops at nothing to ensure the reader has a luxury rarely afforded in journalistic pieces: all the facts. She allows no assumptions. Refuses the acceptance of half-truths or prevailing theories. She looks under every rock, into every cranny (literally and metaphorically). Her communion with the past is a rare achievement! In the end, instead of being told how to think, she affords the reader the opportunity to relive the investigation for themselves. "How did they die?" is important. But this multilayered tale is much more than that. What they lived for is the matter at hand. If you look far enough, just as Uusma did, you'll find out.Just like love, this book is imperfect. It leaves some things to be desired. It can be choppy and incomplete. I guarantee you, you'll wish some things were done differently. But what great works don't? And with that in mind, if given a chance, you'll be captivated by what is an honest reflection of our humanity and the struggles we face when we aspire to more.Purchase or borrow. Enjoy. In the end it will have been worth it!- GL

Bea Uusma is delightfully passionate about the Andrée expedition; a failed polar venture of the 19th century. And believe me, she will drag you into it too. You should let her. It's fascinating.Immediately after finishing this (all in one day, as it was nigh impossible to pull away from) I handed it off to the next person I laid eyes on just so I would have someone to talk to about it. It’s that good. If I could give it six stars, I would.

Andrèe had the idea of flying with a hydrogen balloon to the North Pole. Bea became fascinated, and studied medicine beccause she wanted to solve the mystery of why all three of the expedition died. She hate to freeze but visit the Arctic region (including the North Pole) many times. Andrèe`s expedition must have been the most stupidly organized expedition ever and its members death on an isolated arctic island the result of it. But efter reading this book, you become as fascinated as Bea Uusma! The book is also printed in a larger edition (only in Swedish) with more pictures.

By D H Neilson Even in the opening lines of D L Andersen’s short story, it’s evident that something is amiss in seven-year-old Benjamin’s life. “There was hardly a night I didn’t remember him coming home late, but this night was different.” Benjamin’s voice, strong and engaging, pulls us into his world, and of course we want to know what’s troubling his father. Plenty, as it turns out: business relationships, recession, the status of the territory, exploration, land. D L Anderson is clearly fascinated by this period of American history and deeply concerned to be true to it.Her style and sense of character are equally strong, the family members around Benjamin coming over as distinct personalities. Sister Julia, for example, is “changing in ways that make me feel like sour apple vinegar inside”. Like all really effective metaphors, Andersen’s are a finely judged mix of the striking and the natural: ‘Mama spoke with a slight waver in her throat, like a tea kettle losing its steam.’ Or of Benjamin’s slyness in raiding the larder: ‘moving slow as a barge through ice on the Mississippi.’Benjamin’s depredations are an occasion for him to pick up, unobtrusively, the considerable forces making life both difficult and exciting at that time. In many ways I’d have liked Andersen to remain in that moment for the entire tale, but her notes reveal that this string of vignettes, with wide chronological sweep, introduces a longer work still in the offing. That certainly imposes a strain on this brief piece that’s quite difficult for it to shoulder (although Benjamin’s informal but developing voice does much to hold it together) yet, on the other hand, it’s an intriguing glimpse of a work to come, that, with a sure feel for style, character and historical accuracy, seems bound to capture the reader.

History brought alive By Amazon Customer This gem of a short story narrates a pivotal time in the building of America, and is equally charming and heartwrenching by the turn of each page. Told from a child's perspective as he grows to a young man and witnesses the rise and fall of his family's fortunes, the prose is beautiful and dialogue realistic. There are times when the descriptions are so vibrant that you feel you are in the same room as the young man, hearing him speak. The impending disaster befalling the family creeps upon the reader with unremitting certainty, and one's heart goes out to those affected by events. What makes this even more tragic is the truth of the story and the fine research that supports it. And, as a bonus, the author has offered her own interpretation of the house and family history, based on the deep knowledge she has of the location, in an additional author's note. All in all, a highly enjoyable read, written with an authentic voice, captivating us with this family, their struggles, and suggested redemption.

This piece of history has been well researched and it shows in her writing. But, there is more to "Papa's Portrait". Ms. Andersen also tells of the heartfelt journey she traveled to put the words in print. And then? She pulls us in again by giving us a snippet of her upcoming novel, "On the Banks of the Ohio." In the first few pages the tension is already set. By the end of the sneak peak, there were no more pages to turn to satisfy my curiosity! Erg! I need the next chapter, pronto!

I'm sad that I waited that long to start it...with that said, I read it today in one sitting... rainy day and kids were at school. It was PERFECT!! I adored Lainey and Sam together- How cute right?!!! Their friendship was so real and easy to relate too- Girls, we all have that one friend we've had forever that brings out the batshit crazy in all of us! Sam was solid! I also loved the dirty mouths- cause lets be honest, thats real life- rough mouths, wine wine wine and forever girlfriends. I hope to read Moon and Sam's story ASAP!!&&&& Yes!! You all know you would have drove that five hour drive too!!! lolI thought Nicole gave us just enough of the drama with Jase's issue regarding his dad, without me wanting to strangle the characters from too much inner dialogue. It was just enough to see how he was hurting, and the resolve with him and his dad's relationship was just clever- not cheesy or too HEA for the rest of the story. It was nice to see how Lainey dealt with Derek (She is woman hear her roar- GO GIRL!!) and her parents loss. It was enough to see how deep she was hurting and it wasn't over kill in the mellow dramatics. Ya can't help but love a strong heroine.I was smiling and content when I read the last bit while finishing it. It was a great, wholesome and BEST kind of -love your man- book I've read in a bit!! SEND ME THE NEXT ONE!!! [[SIGH]]

The 4 Keys to Unlocking the Brilliance in You: Powerful Self Help Lessons for Positive Change, by Stephen Rome

Review "One of the opening paragraphs of Stephen Rome's book, "The 4 Keys to Unlocking the Brilliance in You" succinctly encapsulates his view regarding the plethora of self help manuals available in the market: "There are many books on personal development... In general, what I have found is that these books serve a great purpose; but some of them seem to focus less on the most essential ingredient required for success-the cause of success-and that is you; your mind, your body, your emotion and your feelings......" In a world increasingly dominated by stress, deadlines and endless commitments, many of us find ourselves overwhelmed with duty and responsibilities, often resulting in various degrees of self-neglect with ensuing physical and mental health dysfunction. Rome writes with great enthusiasm and conviction that is palpable from the outset. He suggests his "4 Keys" for self improvement and management simply and logically, in an extremely easy to read format, offering a range of weblinks to further illustrate his opinions which is likely to add to the appeal of his work. The focus encouraged throughout is one of self affirmation and self belief; qualities that are often underestimated or marginalised in our modern day cultural expectations of "quick fixes". The "4 Keys" he presents are described systematically and clearly with allowance for variability and individual speed rather than as a dogmatic, inflexible prescription. Although it may present as simple and obvious in certain aspects to some, this book provides sound guidance and robust direction for those who are seeking suggestions to make positive changes in their attitude and lifestyle which could assist in improvements in overall wellbeing and general functioning, using will power and determination. About the Author Stephen Rome educated and brought up in London, has always been an avid reader and passionate follower on the subjects of the art of living, self help, self improvement, personal well being, healthy living, meditation and yoga. After following the workings and readings of many well known authors, spiritual leaders and philosophers, Stephen is embarking on his journey to help and inspire others to achieve a balanced life of success and being the best that they can.

Dill The 4 Keys to Unlocking the Brilliance in You: Powerful Lessons for Positive Change by Stephen Rome is a great book and is short and easy to read. He tells us there are four keys to unlocking the potential within you. Each successive key, builds on the previous key until you are working on all four keys together. Once you have gone through all four keys and are working the plan you will discover positive changes in your life and should be feeling happier as the changes take place. I think 178 pages.Emily has left an abusive man with her twin 4 year old children. Her best friend from a women's shelter-Jenna-has given her a safe place to stay until she can figure out what she wants/needs to do with the situation that is currently going on. (I won't say b/c that will spoil it).Travis is a sweet man that lost his wife and child and comes to the winter cabin to enjoy some time alone. He wasn't expecting Emily and her children. But he found himself enjoying the time with her and her children. This isn't an aggressive alpha love story. It's a sweet story regarding a woman trying to figure out her next step in life and a man trying to move forward with his life. There isn't sex. I don't remember any bad language. It is innocent and sweet. But does have flashbacks of her abuse.

Reis Emily, escaping from an abusive ex-husband with help from a social worker friend, Jenna, is trudging through a few miles of snow with twin four-year-olds to reach an isolated cabin. However, Jenna’s brother, Travis, who is still in a depressive state over the death of his wife and daughter four years ago in a tragic accident, is also on his way to the family cabin to find isolation over the holidays. When he discovers Emily and her children at the cabin, her story and submissive behavior awakens protective feelings he felt that he had lost and Emily slowly begins to realize that there are men that are not controlling and are worthy of trust. However, Emily’s ex is still seeking to take her children away and she is afraid to let her nascent feelings for Travis prevent her from saving them. The story of a woman running from an abusive relationship and finding salvation with a man dealing with his own tragic history is not new, but this incarnation is told simply with minimal editorial errors and presents the characters growth in a respectable time frame. However, the final resolution with the background villain is solved too quickly in a bit of serendipity, undercutting the suspense element for many readers.

This is a sweet little story on how a woman is very distrusting with men after being with an abusive spouse, and then after running away with her children, she finds a man that fills the hole in both his - and her's - heart. Very sweet light-hearted read with no violence or explicit themes. Only gripe would be that the story is a little predictable.Thank you, Angelica Kate!

Struggling to survive in a world where acts of love can also be acts of treason, a young girl is forged into a woman by the American Revolution. The year is 1774 and Janice Meredith is the daughter of landed gentry in New Jersey loyal to the King. Her life becomes complicated when a handsome and mysterious bondservant, the hero of our story, arrives from London. Yet his presence does not keep her from attempting to elope with a wealthy visitor who is actually a British spy. When war breaks it rolls across her New Jersey home as the family’s barns are ransacked for food—by both armies—and a battle involving hundreds takes place, literally, in her back yard. After she frees our hero, now a captured Patriot, Janice is arrested as a traitor. She’s in Trenton on Christmas Day 1776, and on horseback between two fighting armies during the Battle of Princeton. She dines with General Washington after the Battle of Harlem Heights, and with British General Howe when he commandeers her family’s home. Though starving, she refuses undesirable wealthy suitors and joins her father in a Patriot prison camp. During the climatic battles of Yorktown, she’s with the wounded and the dying. Through the turmoil, shadowing her life and her heart--that mysterious bond servant turned Patriot. Any resemblance between Liberty’s Call and another story about a sweeping American war and a young woman juggling suitors (think Gone With the Wind) is the fault of Margaret Mitchell. Liberty's Call is based on Janice Meredith, a bestseller in 1899--the year before Mitchell was born.

By Melissa Poskey Kudos to this author for a great storyline, Amazing characters and an easy flowing read! This was such an exciting adventure that I hated to see end! It felt like I was there and part of this story, as if the characters happiness, heartbreak, and excitement were my own feelings and as if "his Excellency" was a personal friend. There was literally not a dull moment, so much excitement; a true page Turner.I'll definitely read anything I can find by this author!

Johnson I gave this two stars because the author did follow the chronological order of the revolution and had her background facts well researched. However, the actual story line was just awful. I only finished the book because of the historical facts. I had personal fun equating the story characters with other fictional personalities i.e. The heroine, Little Goody Two-Shoes; her parents, Edith and Archie Bunker; the "hero", Dudley Do-right; the obvious villain, any one of the dastardly villains of the Saturday matinee serials of my childhood; the two-faced land owners vying for our little heroines hand in marriage; the Three Stooges. You get the picture. I shall stick to non-fictional stories of the Revolutionary War from now on.

By Susan M Some have apparently compared it to "Gone With The Wind" (which I have always loved because of the intense love between Rhett and Scarlett-- but a love which involved too many misunderstandings/ misinterpretations to ever be openly declared/ recognized by both sides at the same time) and I can see why... there are definitely similarities. However, I almost think this one is greater in ways for reasons I will allow the reader to discover. I understand this is a rewrite of a late 1800's novel, BEFORE "Gone With The Wind" ever existed. The books are set in 2 different wars (Revolutionary and Civil), but the misunderstandings and his/ her "ranks" in society are similar. The characters in this book, both historical and fiction, are realistic given the time period. The historical occurrences seem to be accurate. I would strongly recommend this story to lovers of history and LIGHT romance, whether teens or adults. I very much enjoyed this historical fiction book!

The Freedom of Being: Forget the opinions of others and release your authentic self, by Steven Sisler

From the Author This work is a compilation of 30+ years of biblical study including over 15,000 hours of exploration within the Christian biblical texts. My goal is to reintroduce old and many times misinterpreted philosophical ideas that have created what I call the "Eros Prison," a performance prison that holds many people "captive" to misinterpreted ideas as well as the opinions of others within social systems, social classes, religious institutions, and their divided sub-groups.This work is not necessarily about human behavior, but rather it is about our response to others' opinions about our own life and purpose within social orders. The book might be a little dense, but it will walk the reader through widely held beliefs within the conservative movement that create "us against them" scenarios that keep people apart and create culture wars. This book is for those who have a Judaeo-Christian backstory, but are still not satisfied with where they are in life, work, and in their deepest relationships. This book will help you be yourself without feeling you have to apologize for it.

About the Author Steven Sisler was born in the month of June, 1963. Having spent the better part of his life "searching" for both personal and life significance, Steve lays out his 30+ year experience with beautiful anecdotes for mastering the art of being yourself.Steve is the founder of The Behavioral Resource Group, a behavioral and relationship consulting firm with clients in 18 countries. Steve works with entrepreneurs and assists them in their relationships associated with life and work.Steve lives in Dallas with his wife of 32 years and their youngest of three children.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Freedom to Be Real By Andy Prickett This is an important work, being the (current) result of one man's lifelong research and experience. I pre-ordered the Kindle version as soon as it was made available. I will unreservedly make a sweeping generality: if everyone in a single generation (say, perhaps Generation X) read this book and took it to heart, we'd have a reasonable chance of getting somewhere with each other. While not simply self-help, nor rigorous philosophy, this is a fantastic dismantling of the religious and psychological scaffolding that surrounds a fallacious view of 'self' that undeniably creates far-reaching problems in human relations. It is not a how-to guide, with step-by-step instructions on how to 'crush it' in some way, nor a soft coddling of pillowy Platonisms. Rather, it attempts to do exactly what the title says: give you the freedom to be real. You will be made aware of just how not-free you might in fact be. More particularly (and personally), if you were raised in any form of Christian mindset, this will help you survive middle age. One star reluctantly less than 5 because, frankly, I did feel like the writing flow got a little dense in the middle. If you have heard Steven speak, however, you will understand that reading it to yourself in his voice instead of your own might serve you better. His insights are emotionally penetrating and intellectually profound, and provide alot to be unpacked.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Art of Freedom By Michael Hodge In Steve’s latest book he unravels our collective DNA to essentially define the freedom gene. With unconventional clarity he dismantles personal and social edifices that obscure our view of freedom. His impressionist composition spans our everyday life viewed at unusual angles with light applied skillfully to engage, form, reveal and inspire new understanding. Steve doesn’t travail over assemblages of academic tedium and effortful data formulation; rather his brushstrokes convey uncomplicated truth. It’s a ranging work of art not a formulaic self-help book. It does however change you, much like an answered riddle never riddles again.Read this book and un-riddle yourself.

My 3 Big takeaways:1) MOST of us play too small. I have done some cool stuff, but it is time to ramp up my game and impact and serve more people. 2) We fear others negative opinions without realizing that negative people will almost always be negative to themselves first and others second.3) So we should discount this and FORGET about trying to please everyone, instead we should become the best version of ourselves, you know the version with our own unique talent developed to offer value uniquely to people who will benefit and appreciate it.

George Robert Gissing was an English novelist who published 23 novels between 1880 and 1903. Gissing also worked as a teacher and tutor throughout his life. He published his first novel, Workers in the Dawn, in 1880. His best known novels, which are published in modern editions, include The Nether World (1889), New Grub Street (1891), and The Odd Women (1893). Gissing’s early novels were not well received, but he achieved greater recognition in the 1890s, both in England and overseas. The increase in popularity was linked not just to his novels, but to the short stories he wrote in this period and his friendships with influential and respected literary figures such as the journalist Henry Norman, author J. M. Barrie and writer and critic Edmund Gosse. By the end of the 19th century, critics placed him alongside Thomas Hardy and George Meredith as one of the three leading novelists in England. Sir William Robertson Nicoll described Gissing as ”one of the most original, daring and conscientious workers in fiction.” Chesterton called him the ”soundest of the Dickens critics, a man of genius.” George Orwell was an admirer and in a 1943 Tribune article called Gissing ”perhaps the best novelist England has produced”. He believed his ”real masterpieces” were the ”three novels, The Odd Women, Demos, and New Grub Street, and his book on Dickens. The central theme can be stated in three words — ‘not enough money’.”

From Heel to Toe Along the Boot of Italy By James Paris What possessed George Gissing -- best known for his hardscrabble pictures of poverty in London, such as NEW GRUB STREET -- to travel to Southern Italy and write a classical travel book about his journey? Yet there he is, working his way along the underside of the boot of Italy as a traveller. Even then, the area was known primarily for its rural poverty and has not attracted tourism at any time in its existence since the Greeks settled there over 2,000 years ago. And yet this is perhaps Gissing's most charming book. He becomes ill, is taken care of by strangers, does his best to escape the clutches of the local bands of outlaws, and succeeds in his quest to see a corner of Europe known to few outside of Italy. I highly recommend this book as the best introduction to a writer who deserves a revaluation of his literary reputation.

Schneider Here we have George Gissing as close to paradise as he had ever hoped to be, according to the introduction to this edition.Gissing was a fiction writer of some reputation during the late Victorian age. His fictional domain was mostly misery: underclasses, suffering of the poor, failing writers, failing marriages, failing dreams, hopelessness of single women, uphill struggles of independent women...He also wrote non- fiction: a much praised Dickens study and this travel book after a trip to Calabria in 1897. It is an outstanding specimen of travel writing. It is also far more directly personal than we ever meet the man in his fiction. He is a different man here, with a classical education, tolerant, open minded, far sighted. His purpose is looking for traces of the antique history of Magna Graecia, but he had open eyes and ears for the people and the land.An excellent text edition, better than usual for Gissing's work nowadays, sad to say. The illustrations are not quite on the same level, being mostly undistinguished black and white photos, but that can probably not be blamed on the Classic Travel Writing series, it seems to have been like that since the book was first published, to much acclaim. Some illustrations are copies of sketches that GG made. It is good that he was a writer, not a painter.

A Ramble to Calabria with Gissing By Robin Friedman By 1897, the English novelist George Gissing (1857 - 1903) had achieved a degree of financial and critical success after years of writing. He took a vacation to Calabria, the "toe" of the southernmost part of the "boot" of Italy. From his youth, Gissing had loved the ancient world. He was especially fond of Gibbon and had been awarded a set of "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" for his early academic accomplishments. Calabria had been the home of the Greeks, Romans, and Goths. Although Gissing had earlier traveled to Italy he had never been to Calabria. He was eager to see the places he knew only from books for himself. Thus with guidebook in hand, Gissing set out for his "ramble" to southern Italy. In 1901, Gissing wrote a short memoir of his journey titled "By the Ionian Sea". At the time of his visit, Calabria was difficult of access, little developed, known for an unhealthy environment, and rarely visited by tourists. Friends and people further north in Italy tried to discourage the visit. But in the first chapter of his book Gissing explained with enthusiasm the attraction Calabria held:"I shall look upon the Ionian Sea, not merely from a train or a steamboat as before, but at long leisure: I shall see the shores where once were Tarentum and Sybaris, Croton and Locri. Every man has his intellectual desire; mine is to escape life as I know it and dream myself into that old world which was the imaginative delight of my boyhood. The names of Greece and Italy draw me as no others; they make me young again, and restore the keen impressions of that time when every new page of Greek or Latin was a new perception of things beautiful. The world of the Greeks and Romans is my land of romance; a quotation in either language thrills me strangely, and there are passages of Greek and Latin verse which I cannot read without a dimming of the eyes, which I cannot repeat aloud because my voice fails me. In Magna Græcia the waters of two fountains mingle and flow together; how exquisite will be the draught!"Although almost all of Gissing, including "By the Ionian Sea" remains too little known to modern readers, this short work is among the best travel books ever written. It ranks with the best of Gissing's work and has rarely been out of print. The book is written in a lyrical, elegant prose with Gissing speaking throughout in his own voice about a place he knew and loved. The book has a sense of ease and happiness that is absent from most of Gissing's novels. The book is written with almost painterly detail, as Gissing describes the sea and the mountains, the orange groves, ruins, small dusty towns, hotels, and people that he observed on his journey. Much of the book describes Gissing's search for places of the ancient world. He discusses sites related to Horace, Alaric, Hannibal, Pythagoras, and Cassidorus, among others. Without pedantry, Gissing gives an relaxed sense of the ancient riches of Calabria. Throughout the book, he contrasts the ancient history of the region with the contemporary people he met and places he observed.Gissing's journey began in Naples, just north of Calabria. The story begins with a short vivid portrait of Naples as well as of his steamship voyage to Paola at the northernmost part of the region. Although located on the sea, much of Calabria is mountainous. Gissing describes his journey from town to town by railroad, horse-drawn carriage, and steamer. The towns described include Taranto, Cotrone, Cantazaro, and Squillace. Gissing concluded his ramble at Reggio, at the southernmost tip of Italy just across from Sicily. He describes the mostly simple and unsophisticated people of the Calabria of his time and the sites. He tells of ancient churches and monasteries, hidden rivers, mountain villages, caves, farmers and their donkeys plowing the fields as they did 1000 years earlier, tiny book stores, street musicians, museums, and frequently bad food.As had been predicted by his friends, Gissing fell ill with malaria during his visit to the town of Cotrone. He almost died. Gissing recovered his health under the care of a young doctor, Ricardo Sculco, who receives an affectionate portrayal in the story. Even with this serious illness, the overriding tone of the book is one of happiness as Gissing discovered for himself a place he had long only imagined. At the end of his journey, for all his experiences of the sights around him, Gissing's heart remains with antiquity. He concludes the story of his ramble:"Alone and quiet, I heard the washing of the waves; I saw the evening fall on cloud-wreathed Etna, the twinkling lights come forth on Scylla and Charybdis; and, as I looked my last towards the Ionian Sea, I wished it were mine to wander endlessly amid the silence of the ancient world, to-day and all its sounds forgotten."In 2000, an American journalist, John Keahey, was inspired by Gissing's travel book. Keahey retraced Gissing's journey of over 100 years earlier and wrote his own sequel, "A Sweet and Glorious Land". (2000) I found it helpful in reading Gissing's book to examine a map of southern Italy. Because I have no independent knowledge of the area, I also found it useful to read the Willkipedia article on Calabria for brief background on the places Gissing so beautifully describes.Robin Friedman

Although limerence is ultimately a nightmare experience for many people, its intense emotionality has doubtless inspired many wonderful works of art. We hear evidence of intense infatuation in music all the time, but this wonderful book brings us visual art inspired by limerence. It's fascinating how artists can translate strong emotion into imagery, particularly such a complex experience as limerence. Check it out!

Raising Awareness about Limerence and Romantic Obsession Through the Very Relatable Medium of Visual Art By Amazon Customer My discovery of limerence, it's characteristics and general patterns, was the threshold of recovery for me. Starting with reading Tennov's debut study on the subject Love and Limerence: The Experience of Being in Love, and then Lynn Willmott's Limerence: Harness the Limbic Brain, I discovered many other literary, digital and other therapeutic resources for coping with my limerence. In buying Drawing Limerence, I support Lynn's cause to spread awareness about the virtually global impact of limerence on the lives of millions, as well as to continue research on the subjects of limerence and romantic obsession. Learning about limerence opened me up to many different avenues of therapy and self help, such as books, counselling, 12 step fellowships, etc that I would have otherwise not discovered if not for the existence of such insightful literature. The artwork in this book is exceptional, hinting at the hauntingly deceptive external normalcy of limerent experiencers in some paintings and paces, while depicting the tumultuous internal psychological and emotional experience of limerence in others. An effectively light and unique way to raise awareness about limerence; good edition to any coffee table, bathroom magazine rack etc..

There Are Three Certainties in Life: Death, Taxes...and the Dark Night Experience. Dark night experiences, or DNX, are those terrible, painful experiences that shock the core of our being and fill us with anguish, bewilderment, helplessness, and hopelessness. Whether it's an ugly divorce, the death of a loved one, suicide, betrayal, cancer, addiction, chronic pain, bankruptcy, being abandoned, fired, lonely, or in debt-it is like living through a tsunami. DNX can leave every aspect of your life marked with a giant X: "shattered, condemned, and marked for destruction." Dark Night Experience will help you not only survive the DNX but thrive. Authors John and Vivian Moy offer the wisdom and experience gained from over thirty-five years in ministry, and their own dark night experiences. This book begins by exploring the paralyzing fears and torments that accompany a DNX-the grief of being shattered, facing our dark side in a dark place, the loss of hope... It then moves on to inspire hope as it details the gifts God gives to help bring us through these dark seasons. Dark Night Experience will leave you encouraged, inspired, and ultimately challenged to grow deeper in your faith and lean more fully on God, who works in all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

Important book for those in a crisis of faith By Bibliophile Dark Night Experience: Survive, Revive and Thrive by John and Vivian Moy is a vital book for those going through a "dark night of the soul", or for those who are ministering to people going through a crisis. It begins by defining the Dark Night Experience (DNX) as "those awful, painful, and terrible experiences in life that shock the core of our being and fill us with anguish, bewilderment, helplessness, and hopelessness." The book includes stories and quotes from both ancient sources such as Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, and modern authors like Charles Colson, Henri Nouwen, Gordon MacDonald and Phillip Keller. It also gives lessons learned from Biblical characters who went through their own dark night experiences, like Joseph, Gideon and Elijah. The first portion of the book describes the problem, while the second part gives ways to deal with it and move through it ("survive, revive and thrive"). The reader is left with a sense of hope that they, too, can make it through their DNX. The authors are open and candid in sharing their own experiences. I recommend this book unreservedly.

When is the last time you slept well? Felt totally confident delivering a speech, performing, or competing? Reflected at the end of the day and simply smiled? The secrets of health and happiness used to be the special knowledge of mystics, monks, and brain scientists. Not any more. The power to feel rested, in control, and happy already exists within your own brain. But too many of us are so busy and stressed we simply don’t enjoy our lives. We finish the week and can’t remember how we spent our time. Tired of missing the precious moments? Want to change? Now you can. The way is called mindfulness. Mindfulness is a philosophy, a series of exercises, and now a scientifically validated therapeutic treatment for emotional suffering like chronic stress and depression. But it doesn’t take a trip to a monastery or a 10-week class to begin experiencing the benefits of transforming your body and mind. Mindfulness Is Sublime is a series of nine invitations. Each invitation explores a different avenue into the most important thing too many of us ignore: this moment. Whether you need the scientific or the spiritual way into this essential discipline for every human being, this little book begins your journey. Buddha, Thoreau, and your favorite yoga teacher figured out how to grab the beauty of this moment. You can experience the same pleasure they discovered. Unwrap the present. Every moment can be mindful and mindfulness is sublime.
