She's gonna lose it in only the Pop Diva way. Spectacular. She auctions her cherry to the highest bidder. Bidding starts at...hold your breath... ten million dollars! Insane. Any takers? You bet. And the winner is... GIANFRANCO ZOLDATTI is a big loser. In fact, the billionaire speed demon is on a losing streak he's contemplating retirement from professional car racing. About the Author The author is a hopeless romantic.  A chronic daydreamer. That being said, her works may have the tendency to be over the top, out of this world, unrealistic (she writes cheesy, romantic fiction, by the way) and outright fantastical and outrageous(she loves the one-in-a-million chance of ever happening kind of stories). Yes, all that from a hyperactive, decadent mind. Please, do not take the warning lightly. Protect your Kindle with Kevlar before starting to read any of her works.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I love my job By Henry Griggs I'm a programmer. I love my job, but I probably cause too much drama. I am the target audience for this book. It carried a lot of home truths for me. I read it several times, made some notes, and am following it at work. It will take time to make a difference, maybe years, but it will be worth it. The book is unpalatable, but very true. It shows you how to improve. It's not expensive, but it's well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

The Los Angeles River was tamed years ago. The river, by nature wanting to be violent and random, doses now in a concrete bed through downtown Los Angeles. In the citys core, there are over a dozen bridges that connect Los Angeles across the riverand these bridges are architectural marvels! These bridges were built in the first decades of the 1900s, and their history continues. The largest and longest bridge, the Sixth Street Viaduct, is in the process of being replaced. Others have been upgraded and enlarged; Spring Street is underway now. Many of the bridges were designed by one man, Merrill Butler, who made each bridge different, yet matching. In this volume, the reader will explore the necessity of the bridges, how they came to be, and where they are going in the future. The time is ripe for a reexamination of these jewels of downtown Los Angeles.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! By Freewayjim This is a wonderful book, it has a nice mix of historical photos and illustrations along with quality modern photos. My only complaint is I'd have liked to see a little more coverage of the I-10 bridges/ramps over the river but that certainly doesn't take away from the book. The Downtown LA River Bridges don't get the attention of the grander bridges in San Francisco or New York City but they are unique in their own right and this book is by far the best chronicle of them that I have found.

When Donald Trump boasts of his billions while claiming to be a good Christian, he’s not thinking of Jesus. Jesus damned the rich: “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.” Jesus told the rich man to sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor. Trump and his evangelical followers confuse Jesus with Paul, who invented the gospel of prosperity, telling his flock that if they gave to his collection, God would enrich them both financially and spiritually. Paul’s resurrected Christ often contradicted the teachings of Jesus. Like Trump and his followers, Christianity has opted for Paul’s teachings, and he is revered almost as much as his resurrected Christ.

New Testament scholars are people of faith—blind faith. We include a case study of one of the world’s most famous scholars, who touts his lofty principles. Yet on Paul’s behalf, he repeatedly sacrifices both his principles and his reason. For example, he asserts that Paul was always an observant Jew. But Paul ate pork from swine sacrificed to pagan gods, and called the Bible a “curse” that was “worth dung.” Paul violated the most fundamental tenets of Judaism, not to mention the Apostolic Decree. Yet this scholar is far less faith-based than his colleagues.

When facts conflict with faith, professional Christians either convert them or consign them to purgatory. For example, Paul repeatedly complained of his poverty. But when he reached Rome, he purchased housing that only the elite could afford. This fact is beyond dispute, so it is suppressed. Paul said he slaved night and day to support himself. But artisans like Paul earned a subsistence wage, and could not possibly have earned enough to pay for Paul’s costly mission. This basic fact of economic life is almost always suppressed. Some well-known scholars, like Bruce Chilton, even assert that tent-makers like Paul got rich from their labors. Furthermore, while Paul told his church in Thessalonica that he slaved to make ends meet, he thanked his church in Philippi for repeatedly sending him money in Thessalonica. Somehow, these scholars manage to ignore this incriminating evidence. Similarly, in his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul claimed to support himself. But in his second letter to the Corinthians, he was forced to admit he “stole” money from his church in Philippi. Again, these scholars ignore it. They even assert Paul would never dissemble, and that his claims must always be accepted.

In the ancient world, writing letters was very expensive, and even businessmen earning far more than Paul could not afford it. That’s probably why Luke never mentioned Paul’s letters, and why, for almost two thousand years, scholars avoided the subject. But over a decade ago, E. Randolph Richards devoted a chapter of his book to the cost of Paul’s letters. Faced with a series of unpleasant facts, he falsified them, and fraudulently eliminated over 90% of Paul’s costs. For example, he transformed secretarial wages from 35 denarii per 100 lines of text, to 25 denarii per 10,000 lines. His colleagues remained silent, and his evangelical publisher refused to issue corrections, much less pull the fraudulent work.

There are many damaging facts, fully documented, and readily confirmed—no divine revelations required. They paint an entirely different portrait of Paul than the photoshopped versions you’ve seen. Jesus said the truth shall set you free. Professional Christians can’t handle the truth. Get the facts.

Paul Revealed: Facts that Father Never Told You, by Steve Herman

Review Paul Revealed: Facts that Father Never Told You is a study recommended for readers who want an in-depth biographical and spiritual analysis of the important role Paul played in Biblical affairs, and provides a coverage both scholarly and accessible as it reveals not only the extent of Paul's life, times, and influence, but lesser-known facts about his impact on Jesus and the world.... Paul Revealed also will raise some controversy in that it focuses on facts that are often thought-provoking challenges to traditional viewpoints of both Paul and Jesus; so Christian readers who don't wish to reconsider the boundaries of faith and fact might wish to look elsewhere. There's nothing pat, predictable, or status quo in the approach of Paul Revealed, which intends to both modify and clarify points of confusion in traditional analyses of Paul and Christ. While it may be typical for Biblical scholars to choose faith over fact, Herman's approach is quite the opposite - and will ruffle not a few faithful feathers in the process. Herman provides evidence that Paul's letters, travels, and Roman housing were quite expensive, while his potential earnings from making tents was quite limited. This contradicts traditional claims that Paul supported his mission from his workshop. Herman also documents how Paul's version of Christ's teachings conflicted with Jesus' own words. Be forewarned: Paul Revealed pulls no punches in the process of analysis - and Christian scholars will be delighted in Herman's intricate outlines of contradictions and their interpretation. Of course, such research of necessity supports itself through Biblical quotes and passages; so readers can expect not speculation and theory but specific references to Biblical events and Paul's own writings which, when paired with Herman's observations and historical research, neatly outline the many conflicts with traditional views: "Paul said that when Christ returns, "when he hands over the kingdom to God the father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet" (1 Cor. 15:24-25). That is, shortly before Paul told the Romans that rulers were divine representatives, he told the Corinthians that they were God's enemies. On both occasions, he claimed divine inspiration." Where facts need support, Herman turns to both Biblical inconsistencies and quotes and his own research and analysis: "Shortly after the Apostolic Council, Paul left Antioch and went out on his own. Luke and Paul invented different stories to explain this. Luke said that when Barnabas wanted to take Mark with them on a return trip to Galatia, Paul became so outraged he charged out of Antioch and had nothing more to do with Barnabas or the mission. This is dubious on several counts. First, Barnabas almost certainly had no interest in returning to Galatia. Galatia was a backwater, and it's surprising he went there in the first place. There were many more important places to missionize in the brief time remaining. Second, Barnabas would have been leading and funding the mission. Not only was Paul in no position to object, complaining about Mark would have been petty and vindictive at best. Paul's story was more grandiose and even less plausible, though nearly everyone accepts it." From the economic, political and religious realities of the times, to how New Testament scholars have failed to recognize that Paul could be deceptive (and might even have purposely crafted lies), Paul Revealed is an honest, scholarly reappraisal of the man which any serious reader interested in Christianity will appreciate. Diane Donovan, Midwest Book Review

About the Author Steve Herman, PhD, did interdisciplinary research for many years, including a stint at Bell Labs. After retiring, he had a series of revelations about Paul, which he verified and documented.

I can actually choose joy and bliss and this book is a beautiful reminder of the power inside us all." ~ Adina Klima Sometimes, the prose is inspired by the photos, while at other times the prose inspires the photos. There is a dance of sorts between the two. I hope you enjoy these captured moments and allow them to transport you to another time and place, while remaining grounded in the here and now. I am not a professional photographer. I only used the pure and natural light of the moment and the object of the image before me. Each photo in this book was captured on my handheld phone. By Robin Blackburn McBride Banafsheh Akhlaghi’s book is a love song. Its reminders point to the Beloved in each of us – to the mystical moment and transformative power available here and now. Each page offers restoration. Each reveals our potential to choose harmony, not only as a way of greater ease and understanding, but as a necessity for those who count on us: children of all nations, present and future, with whom we are already one. Akhlaghi’s life-affirming messages invite awareness; we can create anew in tenderness, courage, and beauty. We must.

UPLIFTING AND INSPIRING By Regina Waldman Beautiful Reminders is an uplifting inspiring book of prose, poetry, affirmation , spirituality and love all in one.I started opening the book at random pages and each one of the "reminders" spoke to me so deeply and lovingly. I only just got the book and I am reading a couple of passages every day. I have a very demanding job working on human rights issues and find the book an inspiration which relaxes my mind and inspires me in this challenging world we live in. I have started quoting some of Ms Akhlaghi's "reminders" to my friends.Last but not least, I have started reading some of the poems to my husband. And he loves it! The book is is appropriate reading for young adults and adults alike.I am enjoying it immensely and I only wish you had a 6 star rating, so that I can give it to this book!

The passion of Robert E. Lee and the puritan streak in cavalier J. E. B. Stuart are only two of the surprises in Alf J. Mapp Jr.'s highly regarded psychological analysis of Confederate military and political leaders. In this beautifully written book, Mapp also brings to life the defensively genteel Jefferson Davis, the paradoxically bold retreater Joseph E. Johnston, the amazingly transformed "Stonewall" Jackson, and the mysterious and astonishingly durable Judah P. Benjamin. Mapp's first-rate scholarship, fresh insights, and exciting prose have made Frock Coats and Epaulets essential reading for generations of historians and readers interested in the Civil War. Revised and with a new introduction and updated bibliography, Mapp's classic study of the men who led the Confederate rebellion against the United States will appeal to a whole new generation of Americans.

There are six compact biographies-four epaulets: Robert E. Lee, "Stonewall" Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston and Jeb Stuart; along with two frock coats:Jefferson Davis and Judah P, Benjamin. A qualifying phrase is used, for example,Davis is introduced with the heading "The Missing Grandfather"explain the parvenu as opposed to the aristocrats of Virginia. This book will not please everyone. Southron haters, defenders of Joseph E. Johnston, critics of Jefferson Davis are among the many that will disagree with Dr. Mapp. But is this not what classics are supposed to do? This psycological study is meant to be controversial and keep Civil War Round Tables buzzing for years. Most of the basic facts are well known to any student of he Confederacy; it is the way each individual is defined that is in debate. The amazing thing to this reviewer is how prescient Dr. Mapp was in his evaluations, revealing interpretations that have only recently been accepted. Jefferson Davis, for example, has fared rather better in the last few years than when Dr. Mapp was researching his book. Not mentioned in his updated biography but essential in understanding Jefferson Davis are the current volumes of his papers edited by the brilliant Lynda Lasswell Crist. Yet,Dr. Mapp anticipated Jefferson Davis' strengths (as well as weaknesses) that have been confirmed by such authors as Frank Vandiver and his recent biographers. More surprising perhaps is his evaluation of Robert E. Lee. Although indebted to Douglas Freeman (as indeed who is not) he anticipates Thomas Connelly (THE MARBLE MAN...)discussing Lee's struggle to master his volatile emotions and does not hesitate to criticise. I find the section on "Stonewall" Jackson good but wish James I Robertson Jr. had been used to explain the general's eccentricities. I was priviledged to see Dr. Robertson on the television and believe he was able to fathom the elusive personality better than anyone. The very fact that Jackson was not loved, did not even know what love was, surely contributed to a behaviour distinctly his own. I was pleased to find Eli N. Evans' book in the section on Judah P. Benjamin, but it does not seem Dr. Mapp used it in his book. Benjamin, in my opinion, is the weakest of the sections-almost a caricature. On the otherhand, the Joseph E. Johnston is easily the most controversial and will arouse heated and lively debates for a long time. I wonder why Craig Symonds biography was not listed but I am,like most critics, prone to push my favorites. The Jeb Stuart section is long on antedote but rather thin on interpretation. Perhaps a twice-told tale, but colourful and dramatic all the same, especially when a master paints word pictures. The bibliography is short but a dream. I own , and have read 90% of it,most of the classics are listed: Bruce Catton, Henry S. Commager, Frank Vandiver, Clifford Dowdey, T. Harry Williams, Emory Thomas etc. Old friends to most of us. Still, I miss Bell Wiley, Allan Nevins, Thomas Connelly's two volumes on the army of Tennessee, and most of all Richard Beringer's (and others) WHY THE SOUTH LOST THE CIVIL WAR, especially "the Big Man" thesis and the crisis in religious faith. There is much to admire, criticise and debate but I want to apologize to Dr. Mapp for not purchasing his book when it first came out. Perhaps the title was rather off-putting, or the fact I owned the major biographies and thought the book superficial. Short it is, superficial it most assuredly is not.

Is China’s greatest importance to the world really its economy?

Jeanne-Marie Gescher, a highly-respected China observer who has lived in Beijing since 1989, argues that China’s importance really lies in a 5,000 year question about order: is order only to be found under a single top-down ruler or does it depend on the voices of human beings? And if the latter, what ‘kind’ of human beings are required?

Weaving together the inspirations, ideas, wars and dreams that have shaped the way China’s people have thought about order from the ancient past to the recent present, Gescher reveals a story of China as an epic and continuing battle about order that strikes at the heart of what it means to be Chinese.

With the past in perspective, the clashes between China’s people and the Party come to life as never before – and the importance of China’s question becomes clear for everything, including economics.

In a thought-provoking conclusion, Gescher invites readers to make their own, informed, views about how order might be found in China – and then to take one step further and apply China’s question to the wider world.

"For the first time, a history of China that tells you why it thinks and acts the way it does." -- Richard Spencer, former China bureau chief, Daily Telegraph "This changes the conversation. An extraordinary book." -- Tim Clissold, best-selling author of Mr. China

All Under Heaven: China's Dreams of Order, by Jeanne-Marie Gescher

Review 'Jeanne-Marie Gescher is one of the most respected of the foreign advisors on China. Her argument that history, geography and human nature are essential to understanding the country and its future is one that any China expert would wholeheartedly endorse.' -- Peter Batey, OBE, co-founder, European Chamber of Commerce in China, former chairman, Great Britain-China Centre and British Chamber of Commerce in China 'For the first time, a history of China that tells you why it thinks and acts the way it does. Gescher's recommendations for the way forward should be read by everyone who cares about the fundamental questions raised by China's re-emergence as a global power.' -- Richard Spencer, former China bureau chief, Daily Telegraph 'There are two books on China that are 'must reads' this year- Hank Paulson's and Gescher's...All Under Heaven could not be more different, but it is no less important ... there's nothing quite like this out there.' -- Peter Wheeler, former Goldman Sachs partner (and first Chief Representative in Beijing) 'In 1997 I wrote that the future would be determined by the ability of business and governments to perform against a triple bottom line of people, planet and profit. Jeanne-Marie's powerful new book reminds us that in China, with its vast population, people are pivotal. Their future is ours. Required reading for all true business leaders.' -- John Elkington, co-founder of SustainAbility, executive chairman and co-founder of Volans, author of the best-selling Cannibals with Forks, co-author (with Pamela Hartigan) of The Power of Unreasonable People and (with Jochen Zeitz) of The Breakthrough Challenge 'If China is The Heavenly Empire, then Jeanne-Marie Gescher is an enlightened prophet who transports us from an ancient splendour to the tumultuous realities of China today, offering deep knowledge and sparkling insights every step of the way.' -- James L. McGregor, author of the best-selling One Billion Customers: Lessons from the Front Lines of Doing Business in China, former CEO of Dow Jones & Company in China and Wall Street Journal Bureau Chief in China and Taiwan 'This is a magisterial book: about China but also about what it is to be human on a planet approaching 9 billion people." -- Professor David Grayson CBE, director, Doughty Centre for Corporate Responsibility, Cranfield University School of Management 'Years ago, Martin Jacques wrote a bestseller on China from the outside, When China Rules the World. Gescher's All Under Heaven is China written from the inside. All whose work requires critical China understanding will be grateful to Gescher for lighting their way.' -- David Kelly, visiting professor at Peking University's Institute of Sociology and Anthropology, co-founder and research director, China Policy 'A page-turning work of genius and originality: the history of a great and brilliant people, and the anatomy of China's soul.' -- Adam Williams, OBE, China businessman, author of the Chinese best-seller The Emperor's Bones 'Epic in its scope, Jeanne-Marie Gescher's original, insightful and absorbing book will change the way readers understand China. If there is one China book to read this year, this is it.' -- Isabel Hilton, founding editor, China Dialogue 'All Under HeAven is a tour de force that succeeds brilliantly in opening up this most complex of countries.' --Paul Fletcher, Chairman, Actis 'Jeanne-Marie provides fascinating and well informed insights into a Chinese view of the world. This is an important and stimulating book.' -- Roderick Wye, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House 'All Under Heaven is a big and important book whose scale reflects the ambition and range of its author. A riveting read, All Under Heaven is a truly remarkable and ground-breaking achievement.' -- Victoria Barnsley, former CEO and Publisher of HarperCollins UK and International

It combines lyrical story telling with knowledge, research and perspective on one of the most dynamic and important narratives in human history: the story of China from mythical to modern times. While it may seem at first blush to be a book about China it is in fact a book about what it means to be human, with China offering the keyhole through which readers can catch an insightful glimpse of our shared truth. If you are interested in how we--collectively--come to be where we are today, then this book is a must read. And of course if China is a country that has intrigued or challenged you as it has so many within and beyond the country's borders, then this book will explain a great deal. I am more aware of the world around me courtesy of this great read. I can't wait to see what Gescher writes next.

By Philip Chapnick This is the first book review I’ve ever written for Amazon, and while I am admittedly writing it to review a friend’s book, I sincerely believe that this is a great book for anyone who wants to get a broad and insightful look at contemporary China. With more than 5000 years of history, and a cultural depth and that dwarfs any other modern country, “China”, -- whatever that might mean beyond a designator on a map or a passport -- is a tough topic to get one’s mind around. And although there are certainly many fine books in English that that do an excellent job telling the story of China and its rich and complex history, this one is a fitting and worthwhile addition to that vast bibliography on China. It’s risky – and I am becoming increasingly convinced ultimately fruitless -- to try to summarize or encapsulate a complex country, people, culture, civilization or whatever metadescriptor one wants to hang on “China” into a single thematic. I take this type of approach in general to be form of Hegelian fantasy—or perhaps Hegelian fallacy. However, I am a big fan of RG Collingwood, and especially his posthumously published book – The Idea of History. He sees History not as an accretion of details and facts but, in its essence, a study of mind. This book fits squarely into that view of history. In trying to make coherent sense of the happenings in today’s China, the author looks across the span of Chinese history to come to grips with the Chinese mind. The book is an extended search for an underlying meaning – an inside -- to the externalities of the events that define Chinese history; to find what binds them together into a coherent vision that the Chinese themselves see reflected in their own historical process. And she finds it in the Chinese concept of Tianxia –“All Under Heaven” – the dream of a unified society under the rule of a (benign?) supreme power whose authority is granted by the mandate of Heaven itself. There’s so much to unpack here and although I am a spiritual person, but not a particularly religious one, I am confident that the “Heaven” referred to here is mothing like the Judeo-Christian heaven. Essentially this long and wonderful book is about how to make sense of the Chinese vision of Tianxia and how this underlies the current political situation in which they live. In the modern context the Communist Party has received the mandate of heaven and the dreams of order referred to in the title are manifested through the dictatorship of the people as interpreted and administered by the party through its paramount leader (“the emperor”?) for the good of the “people.”The first third of the book sets the stage for the modern era. It is a retelling of Chinese history up to the Republican period – the fall of the dynastic rule in 1911. I say retelling because throughout the entire book, Ms. Gescher, who is an excellent writer and a dramatic story teller, weaves the historical fact into compelling tales that humanize and bring alive the vast weep of Chinese history. While I understand this extends beyond the scope of a strictly historical approach, it makes a long and complicated tale a really good read. The bulk of the book –some 400 pages -- is concerned with modern China. Having worked in China since the 1980’s with emphasis on providing context and support for western companies trying to operate successfully and effectively in China, Ms. Gescher is especially strong in getting under the surface of contemporary Chinese events. She carefully brings this modern historical period into focus by adroitly traversing across the historical rupture occasioned by the Communist Party takeover in 1949 without losing touch with the deeper rhythms of Chinese society. This is not a “How to run a successful business in China” book. Or one that provides firm conclusions on whether or not China will “take over the world” or collapse under the weight of an unsustainable economic and political system. It is a deeply thoughtful and insightful view of China that will reward you with a view of the inside of the events that have taken place in the last 5000 years in China. That is not to say this is purely a historical view of China with no “practical” value. The thoughtful reader will come away with a deepened and well informed view of China. They will be able to make far better analyses of current events and to draw much more contextually founded conclusions about how to interpret what these might mean and where they might lead. There is a good, though somewhat breathless bibliography, but unfortunately – and this does diminish the utility of the book in my view – there is no index. A cavil perhaps, but something I would have greatly appreciated. As must be clear already, I think this is a brilliant book! I can unreservedly recommend it to anyone who wants to go underneath the surface of current events in China and get a view informed by the depth and richness of the more than 5000 years of Chinese civilization.

It's very different to anything else I've seen on China or anywhere else. It's very well researched yet manages to read like a story - deeply human and nuanced. All Under Heaven is also full of surprises. It's a perceptive and wise book. Jeanne-Marie Gescher asks difficult questions that prompt us to reflect rather than judge. I emerged from it a million times more knowledgeable about China. but that wasn't really the point. It's a book about life, values, purpose and ultimately - how we human beings live together and share the planet and the future. Very timely!

Have you ever wondered what life was like before the internet, cell phones, and TV? Travel back to 1899 via the LINCOLN COUNTY LEADER newspaper and find out. You may be surprised at how little people have changed. Here's a sample of the news: Someone told us that John Ofstedahl was a logger and we still think he is even if he was rolled off from a big log into the water Monday. Accidents will occur in the best of families you know. He since told some of his friends that the temperature of the waters of Depoe in winter was just right for a plunge bath. The protracted period of sunshine is ended and we are having some nice weather again. Light showers prevailed last night and as we go to press the prospect is favorable for more. Good. A slight earthquake shook things up at Tillamook Saturday. Two houses were moved ten feet and the ground was torn open for 200 yards. St. Patrick’s day passed quietly in our city, only one altercation taking place. As usual it was whiskey did it. Al Waugh made the assertion that Jack Allphin drank 138 drinks to celebrate the day. Jack denied it and a scrap would have ensued if it had not been that Sam Owen was present. He told Al he was mistaken and told also where the mistake was made in the count and this averted a bloody encounter and the consequent breaking of an old friendship. C.E. Hawkins and Old Man Leader went to Chitwood Saturday to angle for the festive trout. Quite a number were led out during the day. The water was cold but each wore gum boots and did not get wet––until they fell down. ‘Twas hard to breathe properly and Hawkins almost burst before he stopped drawing in his breath. Four happy Dawsonites passed through Skagway recently with a canvas sack of Yukon gold that weighed 100 pounds dead weight, and which came from French gulch diggings on Eldorado creek. They are all Canadian citizens and first came to Alaska during the popular Klondike rush of December 1897. A billboard before a church in Paisley, Scotland, contains this announcement: “Only short sermons delivered here. Excellent music. This is the place to save your soul and be happy. Walk in.” One is forcibly impressed by the number of blind men seen about the streets of Fez, the capitol of Morocco. It is invariably attributed to the excessive use of coffee. Bedbugs are electrocuted by a new attachment, the side rails of the bed being cut in half, with two plates inserted at the break, which form the poles of an electric circuit, lying out of connection, the pest closing the circuit as he crawls from one plate to another. The Indians of Paraguay eradicate their eyebrows and eyelashes, saying that they do not wish to look like horses. Prospectors who have arrived from Alaska bring news that there are at least 400 prospectors on the Edmonton trail between Dease lake and the Hudson’s Bay post on the Liard river, most of whom are in destitute circumstances. Many of the men are said to be suffering from scurvy and frost bites. The sick cannot receive proper medical attendance and many are dying. A couple named Newton Lord and Jennie Helper were married in an eastern Kentucky town some days ago and the editor of the local paper was almost clubbed to death by the indignant groom because he made use of the heading, “Lord–Helper.” An exchange says that an old church member died, of whose goodness there was some doubt, but who was regarded as a pillar by the pastor, who posted on the church window a notice in these words: “Brother Johnson departed for heaven at 4:30 this a.m.,” and announced the funeral. Underneath this someone tacked a telegraph blank with these words: “Heaven, 9:40 p.m. Johnson not yet arrived. Great anxiety.” A St. Louis woman, after searching for six months for her husband, found his body in an embalmer’s office, where it was doing service as an exhibit. The man had been accidentally drowned.

By Barbara Mojica Interesting collage of state, local and international news posted in the Lincoln County Leader weekly newspaper posted in Toledo, Oregon. At that time the population consisted of 300 inhabitants. The 1899 eight page newspaper covered a plethora of subjects which paint a portrait of life in 1899. The postings range from what you would expect in a local newspapers, births, deaths, weather and local gossip to a larger view of the state, country and world. For example, readers learn that Venice is sinking and that the Yellow River in China has overflowed. On the local side, a reporter tells of a local woman who is able to locate her missing husband in a dream, and a murderer who has hung himself in his cell. We learn that the US government has more gold coin than it knows what to do with, and that paper money cannot be used for exchange in the Philippines because the bugs eat it. The paper reports that a rosary in the British museum is made of the vertebrae of a snake, and another one is made of rat's teeth.Sundry and varied for sure, but the tiny paper presents a remarkable picture of life in 1899 both here and abroad. An interesting, if random, arrangement of facts that makes for a pleasant afternoon of nostalgic fun.

This was my first time ever reading a book like this, and I found it fun and interesting By Val S This was my first time ever reading a book like this, and I found it fun and interesting! I love the way the writers thought about news and how they worded things all those years ago. I can only imagine how much work went into compiling these clips. I think the author did a good job of giving me a slice of life from 116 years ago -- the sad, the funny, the compelling and the absurd. "Oregon Clippings" is a little gem that you can enjoy in short bursts of time, reading a few clips at a time. But it may just interest you enough to savor all at once!

It is not a bunch of cliches' By Meredith I purchased this book as a part of my study of mindfulness and what I sometimes call 'urban zen' - using the zen principles while going through my day as a layperson. Some of the books on zen philosophy have been a little over my head, actually, but this one was just right! It is not a bunch of cliches' - it explains in detail the principles needed to develop mindfulness without just paying the concept lip service.I especially like having it on my Kindle because I refer to it wherever I am when I'm starting to feel anxious, as long as I have my Kindle with me.I think this book has helped me adopt many zen concepts more quickly - I highly recommend it!

I'm stressed out a lot these days and sometimes i have to just chill out and remember why I'm doing and what I'm doing. Reading self help books really do relieve stress for me and motivate me. I highly recommend this book, I always read it when I'm riding the train for an hour. It makes the ride zip through.

It wasn't that anything bad had happened, I just wasn't fully appreciating my life. When I started to read this book it immediately lifted my spirits and helped me to live in the moment. I read a few pages every day and looked forward to my time with the book to center myself. Unfortunately the book ended way too quickly! I didn't even think of looking at how many pages there were, only 20 pages? While it was definitely too short, I still feel it is worth reading.

Though only reigning for nine years, Henry V is one of the most famous monarchs that England has ever had.

Unusually for his time, Henry V was born the son of an English father and an English mother: he was, in the truest sense, an English King.

In the aftermath of his father’s reign, he calmed the vying factions of nobles and united the whole of England, before leading an almost exclusively English army against the ancient foe upon the field of Agincourt.

Henry V would become the archetypal national hero, his rule, his verve, and his ideals becoming the very idea of England and giving rise to something greater: the idea of national patriotism.

To this day he is still seen by some as the originator of some of our greatest forces, a restorer of the Navy, and a founder of military, international and maritime law.

Drawing upon the chroniclers of the time and vast array of literature that has since followed across the centuries, this study goes behind Shakespeare’s immortalised hero to explore what made Henry V the king he was, debunking myths along the way.

Robert Balmain Mowat (1883-1941) was an acclaimed Scottish historian, appointed Professor of History at Bristol University in 1928. During his lifetime he wrote a number of books regarding British and European history, ranging from the Ancient World up until the late Victorian era.

Most interesting for lovers of English history By Amazon Customer Although the writing style is rather dry and scholarly, and in parts the detail is mind-numbing, this book gives a fascinating insight into a truly great king. Had he lived a longer life, he may well have had the impact of Elizabeth I, and who knows how different the English nation might have been. The book deals with Henry's works and the effects on the nation, without really giving a feel for Henry the man. Nonetheless a good read.

First, the Table of Contents is completely useless after the first page of the first chapter. The last chapter ends 13 pages before it is listed. Secondly, the author provides genealogical connections throughout. Unfortunately, the book fails to provide an index to look back on previously mentioned figures. Thirdly, despite Henry V moving throughout England and much of modern day France and Belgium, not one map is provided. In desperation, I kept a copy of Desmond Seward's One Hundred Years War nearby (which I highly recommend). Next, this is a quote from page 175: "Apart from hi; general plans of campaign, he was also excellent oi of the field of battle, arranging his small force with great success, and being distinguished from most leaders of the Middle Ages by the skill which he used the physical features of the ground where his army had to fight." I normally ignore poor writing or editing as I'm after content. In this book, it cannot be ignored. Lastly, the author seems to be driven by wonderment of Henry Vs qualities (piety, affection by the masses, strength of rule and organization) that it appears throughout the book. Criticisms standout as they are so infrequent but then quickly dismissed by further evidence (?) that then contradicts the weakness in character just described. The author uses extensive use of writings from the following decades to present a picture of Henry. Too often the author then dismisses them as lacking factual support. I gave the book two stars only because I gained some knowledge of the incessant campaigns between England and France immediately after the battle of Agincourt.

That question so many folk ask "who would you like to have at your dinner table" mine has always been Henry V. he has fascinated me since childhood in school, he is the epitome of a romantic King while being very quiet, withdrawn and deep but if you hit the right subject would open up and talk for hours. Not handsome but with features that draw you to him so that his looks nor his appearance are secondary. Having studied English History both in Boarding school and in The London Polytechnic, this book has a few arguable points but then any book of this nature has those I think it's for each reader to find their own way.
