Championing the cause of Southern West Virginia, this book asserts that much of the Mountain State’s disproportionate level of poverty, political suppression and historic labor wars – especially in the southern region – can be directly attributed to the illegal creation of West Virginia and the subsequent neglect following the West Virginia Statehood Act – America’s coup d’état. Though the state’s motto may boldly proclaim that “Mountaineers are Always Free,” in reality, thanks in large part to the unlawful precedence set by the 1861 assembly, West Virginia’s mountaineers have historically been the most oppressed people in the nation. Perhaps the most heartbreaking element regarding the creation of the State of West Virginia is this: While the rest of the nation was casting off the evil chains of slavery in the closing days of the nineteenth century, the groundwork was being laid in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia for a new people to be enchained. In the century ahead, the plantations and cotton fields of Georgia gave way to the mines and company towns of Matewan and Paint Creek. The slave owners were replaced with distant industrial corporations profiteering on the backs of America’s once independent mountaineers. Taskmasters were exchanged for notorious mercenaries and terrorists such as the Baldwin-Felts Detectives, whose acts of brutality are unrivaled by even the most demonic slave owners. It is both heartbreaking and frightening to witness how quickly the mountain people of southern West Virginia went from being known as the free spirited Scotch-Irish to impoverished miners living in coal camps begging for just a temporary respite – all of which can be traced to the illegal and ill-advised creation of West Virginia.

Author couldn't control his own bias to subject matter By jpenebaker While hoping to be accepted as a legitimate historical study of the peculiar and unconstitutional manner in which the state of West Virginia was formed out of the state of Virginia in the early days the American Civil War, this book squandered the opportunity of presenting a scholarly study of the events. The author was unable to hold his own bias in check in his writing and the result is a very one sided presentation of information that the reader is just suppose to accept as fact, even though much of the supporting documentation used to back the author's claims are newspaper editorial (which would be comparable today to using Internet blogs to back ones claim). An example of the one-sidedness of the argument would be the use of the general Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson as the standout example of someone from the area that became West Virginia but who fought for the Confederacy while never mentioning the fact the Jackson family itself was very split by the turbulent events of the time. The format of the book is also distracting, the text is broken up to small, many times unrelated, snippets like one would find in a magazine article but not a book attempting to be a serious historical study.

Each essay examines how we, and our children, can overcome obstacles and find simple pleasures in our daily lives. Drawn from Parpos’ experiences as a single mom, we are taken on the journey of a mother who must rebuild a new life for herself and her son. We learn from her touching stories about young students, who wound up becoming some of her greatest teachers, that children have wisdom to share if we only listen. A Year on Route 30 shows us we can survive loss, receive kindness, and delight in the ordinary joys that are all around us. In full disclosure, the author is an acquaintance of mine. Regardless, I would independently recommend this book for a heartfelt read when you need reminding of the generosity of the human spirit.

Then why is it that these two entities often do exactly the opposite? Why do we so often need an external agent to remind us that we should be looking inwards for help. And only then do we ever begin to rein in that pesky mind and heart of ours. Nonetheless, credit then becomes due to the that instigator - for surely (s)he first overpowered her/his own inhibitions and conflicts to become even remotely capable of guiding others. Nelson Stin, thank you.The book “I will fight back” is one big counselling session with 14 commandments that are abbreviated to form the book title. It is well organized and in doing so, the author bypasses the biggest challenge with any content that deals with life. For, this is a complicated subject. It is not easy to clearly formulate the thoughts, summarize them in succinct principles and order them in a manner that is easy to comprehend. The 14 steps showcase a tough homework already done for you.Mr. Nelson asks us to begin with acceptance of our failures and status, grim as they may be, carefully analyse it to filter out the extraneous and the exaggerated, envision a corrective scenario, target an achievement, shed fears of this and that and go all out for it. Of course, none of it will work without belief. And that is why this book makes for a great read. While the above pointers can be surmised in a short paragraph, one needs the whys and the hows of each step to truly understand it. We must realize what it takes to achieve each of those little targets, because once we set out on this route, we will inevitably be faced with failures, hiccups, doubts, disillusionment and most importantly, a lack of reference. After all, every argument about life is made in abstracts. So how can we know when we have truly fought back to, and just how well we have done so.The author strongly recommends everyone to have a proper vision statement about their own life. He also clarifies that the one who loves himself will not be ready to give up because he is not ready to consider himself a loser. He then goes on to cite the cases of Thomas A. Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney, Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs who, in their quest to become specialists and not just professionals, faced unimaginable failures. All very encouraging indeed.I would comment on the quality of writing, but should I? The written piece is smooth and good, but to be honest, it hardly matters here. For, here is an author on a mission to help us “reveal the king inside of us.” So the lessons must be taken regardless their entertainment quotient, which is available in plenty anyway. Nonetheless, the setting of examples, directives, explanations, introductions and an easy-on-the-eye summary of the main points in each chapter is as easy an experience as one can expect to have.In Nelson Stin’s words, “to become successful, you must decide what you want to achieve.” The first three words in that line sum up his objective. But he does not hint at us doing so necessarily in career. As he requests of us very early in the book, he wants us to achieve only a vision that we set for ourselves in life. It can be anything, even a simple aim of having clean conscience and going by our day in a certain way. All we need to adhere to is the central purpose of it all, as per the words of the Great Guru, Maharishi Vyasa: “Be a shining sun, when you live in this world.”

Second, it is just IMPRESSIVE. By far, one of the best motivation books I have ever read in my life. Most people are afraid to make life-changing decisions and they don't really search the inner reason. Most people are afraid of failure and when they fail, they give up. BUT WHY?! Why not understand it's OK to fail? Why not understand that you actually do not really fail, until you decide to give up? This book sums it all up beautifully. It contains a concise strategy on how to start achieving your goals and make your dreams turn into reality. As you'll progress with the chapters, you'll feel more and more encouraged to start doing. You'll rethink your decision to give up. You'll feel your inner will power kindle again, light your inside. Not only will you get motivated, but you will also learn that motivation by itself is not enough. Wait what? Yes! This book is telling you the brutal truth. Everyone get can motivated, but what differs a successful person from one that isn't, is the commitment to the process. The willing to put in the hard work. The many hours.Are you a loser? Bragaw Anyone who has thought of trying to preserve unique aspects of a family history can take a lead from Edgar B. Madsen’s The Shoestring Letters. He draws much of the early chapters from letters, literally tied together with a shoestring, fortuitously discovered after languishing for half a century under his grandfather’s thatched roof in Denmark. One of the letters was written by the author’s father during his 3,827-mile, 11-day voyage to America, heading for a new life in the Chicago area. The year was 1928.Madsen skillfully uses the letters to paint a picture of life on both sides of the Atlantic before, during, and after World War II. His narrative includes a gripping account of the “Spanish flu,” which ravaged the globe in 1918, accelerating an end to World War I hostilities. Trips back to the Danish homeland and reunions with long-lost relatives there help to flesh out the narrative. The volume also includes many photos, some historically significant showing the surrender of German soldiers who occupied Denmark for five years until May 5,1945.Fiercely proud of his family heritage, Madsen points out that the heads of U.S. Presidents on the Mount Rushmore National Monument in South Dakota were sculpted by Gutzon Borglum, a Danish-American. The book quotes liberally from poems and songs that were his father’s favorites, ending with an inspiring tribute to “The Immigrant.”

By Kindle Customer I thought this would be the translation of a packet of letters written in the early 20th century and only recently discovered in a Danish attic, but not so. Only a few letters are revealed. The majority of the book is a limited rendition of Danish history/immigration, as experienced by the author's immediate family. Interesting, but not especially valuable, and certainly not as presented.

Enthralling By Amazon Customer This wonderful little book may be short on the letters, but is long on history, including some little known, fascinating facts. I never knew the former mayor of NYC created the law requiring immigrants have physical exams before arriving at Ellis Island. Until then, many were shipped back, including a one-legged ancestor of the author. Well paced and very entertaining.

By Lakesha Davis This was an amazing book about the journey of a strong single woman who is handling the stresses of having cancer and being single. At the end of each chapter, their is a reflection time for the reader to think about their situation. Cancer has affected many of our lives and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I read the book within 2 days and enjoyed every page. This is a "must read" for anyone who is battling a health issue and feels like no one understands, this book let's you knowthat all things are possible when you trust GOD for your healing. Freda has a great sense of humor and there were pages that made me laugh and pages that filled my eyes with tears. Excellent book!!!

What i enjoyed most was at the end of each chapter By Gary Mays This was a very inspiration read about the life of a very strong single woman who is handling the stresses of having cancer life. What i enjoyed most was at the end of each chapter, their is a time for the us to think about our current or previous situation. Cancer has affected many lives in America and across the world and I highly recommend this book to everyone. I have brought copies just to give to others who is currently battling cancer to let them know that they are not alone.

Hawkins states, "The reality is that we can only take in and use what we are emotionally and spiritually ready to receive." When you are in need, this book will definitely change your life & is one to keep on the shelf. No matter the storm, this is an excellent tool & healthy guidebook to help reorganize your priorities. It will help set your boundaries in a pure & positive light. I'm finally paddling my own raft again now & loving it! So grateful to own a copy. I look forward to picking this book up at other stages in my life journey for more insightful wisdom. I found this book to be enormously helpful By Late Bloomer I found this book to be enormously helpful for visualizing my life and it's direction, identifying what happens when you let others control your "raft" and how to take control (and responsibility) for one's life. It is very short and to the point, easily read in a single afternoon, yet I find myself rereading sections and thinking about the advice on a daily basis. Being middle aged and wondering how I wound up where I am, this book came along at just the right time in my life. Marie Elena Hawkins is a skilled writer and insightful person who has had her own misadventures she shares openly. I'm glad she took the time to share what she has learned with a wider audience.

By CAM This book was a wonderful read, a thought-provoking yet practical look at achieving fulfillment in life by setting healthy boundaries. It's far above most "self-help" guides and the creative metaphor upon which it is built makes for delightful reading. I laughed and cried in self-recognition. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to love more the life they are leading.
