3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't put the book down. A compelling story. By angela I am such a fan of history and in particular women's history. Phillipa Jones is an Egyptologist and a historian who lives in the UK. This book was well written. She focuses on the romances of Queen Elizabeth's life which does provoke curiosity and interest. Along the way you find out more about the Queen. Personally, I felt the romance did keep me focused on finishing the book in a hurry. However, after I was done and learned about Queen Elizabeth's reign and history I wondered why the author didn't focus on some of the other of Queen Elizabeth's traits that may have been played down. It has kept me wondering about several questions around Peace and War such as: How contemporary US relations compare to her reign? How hard is it to have total peace in a country? Are only women able to obtain peace as rulers? Everyone has a little different take on history. This is such a good book. History can be boring but not in this author's hands.

A Thesis on Elizabeth's Romances By dprallon The main objective of this book is both have a complete work on the Queen's love life, from her early liason to Thomas Seymour until her last courtship of the French dauphin. It also is written on the perspective that Elizabeth wasn't a virgin and to debate the possibilities of who were her illigitimate children, either with Seymour or with Robert Dudley.The author makes it very clear from the beggining that she's advancing a certain point of view, which makes this easier to deal with. She isn't deeply conclusive about the matter either, which tells me it's mostly wasted pages on "it might have been". She presents each and every possible child that Elizabeth might have bourne in detail. And that's exactly where it fails.For even if one believes that she might have been secretly a mother (either once of multiple times), the book mostly discards any possible daughters she might have had, except for a certain Hester that might have been Seymour's child. It focus too much on her possible male children, and mostly shows many evidence as to why they -couldn't- be the so named children of Elizabeth. It doesn't say much on it's own, neither about Elizabeth's character nor about her policies, and while it's very well written and an easy read (I read it in less than 6 hours), it could - and should - have been better. Bearing in mind that the author was deeply sick by the time she ended this, it might be the reason that it isn't as well researched as it could have been, or showing more new information.

A Speculative Life By Michael Writing nearly 500 years after historic events presents any author with huge difficulties, especially so as in this study of Elizabeth I, where documented proof is almost certainly sketchy. Jones necessarily must offer little more than speculation for much of her inquiry regarding an illegitimate child. The only two people in a position to know for complete certainty left no documentary evidence; other observers in England and abroad were left to guess based on second-hand accounts and rumors of the queen's behavior. The book is well written but ultimately provides no solid proof of the existence of a child of Elizabeth's--or its absence. Human nature being what it is, it is at least highly plausible that the queen was sexually active as an adult, but history will never be sure whether she gave birth to any child.

About the Author Andy Benford is a retired Commander, Royal Navy, having completed a submarine career that spanned twenty-one years and six of the seven seas. He saw service in diesel-electric conventional submarines, a nuclear powered hunter-killer submarine and a nuclear powered Polaris ballistic missile boat. In 1980 he passed the Submarine Commanding Officers' Qualifying Course, affectionately known as the "Perisher", and qualified as a submarine commanding officer. He went on to command an Australian conventional submarine, HMAS Oxley, during a two year exchange service appointment, and to be the second-in-command of the Polaris submarine HMS Revenge. Cmdr. Benford retired from the Royal Navy in 1993 after the end of the Cold War. They Come Unseen is his first board game.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A Clever Hidden Movement Game Set in the Cold War By Cody Carlson Osprey Games' They Come Unseen is a game a hidden movement set in the Cold War. While it plays up to five players, it works best with two or four. One player (or team) takes on the role of two NATO submarines in the Barents Sea, while the other player commands two Soviet destroyers, and three logistic ships. The subs and the destroyers each have player boards, which feature dials to track battery and depth for the subs, and fuel and salvos for the Soviets. The NATO player has access not only to the main board, but also to a smaller board hidden behind a large player screen. Whenever the NATO player submerges one of his subs, he puts it on the hidden board so that he can keep track of it while the Soviet player searches for him.At the beginning of the game the NATO player selects four random cards that feature Soviet bases- these are his targets. Since there are six total bases, most of them will be targets, but the Soviet player has no idea which ones to defend and which ones are red herrings. The NATO player then moves his subs- every point of movement wears down his battery power- and he may surface to recharge his batteries, surface in a Soviet base to destroy it, or lay mines on the hidden board, (the NATO players only form of attack). The Soviet player then moves his destroyers, which costs fuel points, then they can drop a sonar net to try to locate the subs. Two clear tiles are laid down with colored webs. If a sub is beneath one of the colors, he must call out "Contact Yellow" or whatever the color is. The Destroyer can then launch his salvos, trying to guess the exact spot and depth of the sub. He must pick the correct spot, but if he's close on depth he can still wound the sub. If he is exactly correct, the sub takes a hit. If the sub is hit three times, it is knocked out of the game. The Soviet player can also move his logistical ships which carry ammo and fuel from one base to another, and one of the ships can resupply the destroyers at sea. If a sub destroys a base all the fuel and ammo in it are destroyed. Since ammo and fuel are limited, you will want to use the logistical ships to distribute these resources.Weather also plays a factor as storms move over the board and affect the players' ability to move and take actions. If the NATO player successfully destroys all of his objectives, he wins the game. If the Soviet player sinks both subs, he wins the game.They Come Unseen has some problems. Its components- specifically the ship counters- are a little weak. The game would have benefited from plastic minis. The problem is, virtually all of the Soviet ships look alike. Second, the rulebook is not easy to follow, and can be downright confusing in some areas. The rules refer to "surface" and "periscope depth" interchangeably, without any explanation that they are the same thing. If you don't know that they are the same, you might get confused. Also, it would be nice if the player boards could more easily track information, since Soviets can move, take an action, then move again. There are a few other little fiddly things that it would be nice if there was a way track, but its not here.Criticism aside, They Come Unseen is a very fun game. It's a game of hidden movement not unlike Fury of Dracula or Letters From Whitechapel (though those two games are superior, in my opinion). What is cool here is the cold war theme that really comes through in gameplay. Each move, players are desperate to stay hidden or locate their prey. Games typically last about 90-120 minutes, and they usually come down to the wire. I've had some really intense games where it came down to the last few moves to decide the winner. If you like tight contests and tense, hidden movement mechanics, you may want to check out They Come Unseen. I'm only rating this game with three stars, because of the above criticism, but that does not mean that this is a bad game by any means, merely that I think the presentation could have been better. I have no doubt that for the right kind of gamer They Come Unseen will scratch an itch!Review Copy Provided

It is funny, inspirational, heart based, and immediately actionable within your own life.Not only does this book inspire you to go after your dreams, and there are many books that do this, but it reminds us of the magic within us all and the fact that there is an audience for you if you are willing to find your voice and express it in a passionate, meaningful way. Then, it goes beyond this amazing message to also provide you the tools to make a difference in the world with an online presence. We all know how important an online presence is in this day and age!

If you are thinking about going into business for yourself or if you are already in business for yourself, like I am, this book is for you! This is the type of book you can read in a weekend (like I did) and immediately begin implementing it's ideas (like I did). To quote a word from the title, it is actually AWESOME! Aymee delivers with the content. She delivers value for you in so many ways with a great sense of humor and coming from a huge background of experience. She talks about discovering who you are and who you can be, then talks strategies for implementing so many things that will help you grow as an individual and as a business owner. She also interviewed several successful entrepreneurs as part of the book, and those are pure gold. Anyone can relate to them and get value from them. I highly suggest that you get this book for your arsenal!

By rockymtnhigh this is an inflammatory, deceptive book, which is not a study guide. it is a piece of political propaganda, drawn from a BDS publication, but marketed as if it is a congregational study guide. It is deceptive, tells one side of an exceedingly complex issue, and represents the views of a small part of the Presbyterian Church. Indeed, the Presbyterian Church USA took steps to distance itself from the document at its last General Assembly, and insisted that the document be accompanied by a statement that "Zionism Unsettled does not represent the views of the Presbyterian Church USA." But of course, the distributors of it have ignored the church's mandate. Shame on them.Save your money.

Exceptionalism Is the Problem By DMM While focusing on state Zionism, the Zionism Unsettled study guide, based on Zionism and the Quest for Justice in the Holy Land, published in 2015 by Wipf & Stock, essentially is a criticism of exceptionalism in all three Abrahamic religions. Rabbi Brant Rosen makes the point tellingly: “ . . . a voice that affirms claims of theological superiority in the name of one people cannot be the voice of God. . . .” Rosen is discussing Zionism. But the broader point is made a bit later: [E]xceptionalism is not unique to Zionism; rather it is present wherever exceptionalist religious ideology is fused with political power.”The critique of Zionism is of state Zionism. It did not have to be so. Chapter One identifies several early Zionists who urged a form of Zionism that was not exclusive: Ahad Ha’am, Yitzhak Epstein, Sigmund Freud, Leon Trotsky, Abraham Leon, Albert Einstein, and Martin Buber. But as Israel was being developed, others (Ze’ev Jabotinsky, David Ben-Gurion) carried the day.While Christians often claim that God’s revelation in Christ is “the most complete revelation of God,” the authors of this work suggest the addition of the phrase “that we have known” and offer a brilliant metaphor of how one views light through a stained glass window, whether from inside or outside.Gary Burge’s attempt to reconcile the one covenant/two covenant problem of replacement theology I found a bit strained, but he clearly describes the problem.The discerning reader will find it easy to dismiss the all-too-common knee-jerk charge of anti-Semitism. The work does not criticize Judaism, rather the exclusiveness of state Zionism.The study guide has been endorsed by such luminaries as Walter Brueggermann and James Wall.
