The Anti-Officer: The True Story of a Chick Turned Airborne Reconnaissance and Why It Was All a Really Bad Idea, by Sonja Landis

Review "Finished reading your book wow. What a read. You have developed a wonderful writing style. Congrats. This would make a great movie because the story line is so original.Push for this as I think it would be great. Write another please." - Jim T.

From the Author Hi my friends! You look so good today! No really! Whatever you're doing... it's working. You look so hot right now, I love it.But back to me...I'm kidding. Kind of. I just wanted to say thank you so much for your continued love and support and laughter on this storytelling journey with me. I'm a misfit, feeling generally awkward and odd-ball in my own head, noticing and experiencing the adventures I'm able to have in life, and spilling it all, unfiltered and without (much) apology, for you. Each of you. I'm here to entertain, to make you laugh and smile when I can. To hopefully make you reflect, be inspired, feel connected and understood. I've realized as I tell my stories, as I show up and reveal my mistakes and triumphs, insecurities and quirks... and pride and joy and sadness and vulnerabilities to the world, it brings people closer to me, instead of driving them away. That's pretty special. Our weirdness unites us, and I'm a big fan of that.So my work isn't meant to change the world in a hugely notable and noble way. I'm just here to make you laugh. That's what I do best, and it feels good. I hope you enjoy. I hope you don't take anything to seriously or get righteously offended... that's not my intent. I know my writing style and language choices aren't everyone's style. Including my own mom's. If I'm not for you, that's cool. If you're interested in this Storyteller's adventures, than I invite you to simply kick back and enjoy. And if you're the weirdo, the square peg in a round hole, the one who makes mistakes and has trouble figuring it (life and purpose and all that important stuff!) out, know that I'm right here with you.. and I'm rooting for you. We should probably be friends! Namaste, Shalom, Peace Be With You, High fives and Smooches to you all! xoxo Sonja

About the Author A Sonja Landis Cocktail: Take one part Desperate Housewife turned Single Mom. Add one part ex-Air Force Aviation Reconnaissance Officer, which should be impressive but wait till you read the book, you’ll see it’s really not. Add equal parts Comedian, Disasters, and Tattoos. Stir. Serve immediately. Enjoy thoroughly over ice. Not too much ice, because Sonja Landis gets cold easily. She also happens to be a Best-Selling Author, and much smarter and more successful than she appears at first glance. Not Hemmingway or Dickens or anything, and not really out to change the world, but you might just like her anyways… She’s just one chick, on a mission to make people laugh, one inappropriate joke and head-scratching experience at a time. Besides being a badass mom, her favorite label is Storyteller, and she’s got a few for you…

Knowing Sonja Landis in person from a while back, I was fully aware of her status in the Air Force. That she was an Officer. That she was gone an awful lot, on deployments, often returning with a deep, dark tan anyone would kill for. But, that was really the extent of my knowledge. Civilians aren’t privy to the behind-the-scenes footage of what really happens on base, and if you ask, you’re always rewarded with a very discreet answer. I knew what she did, but I didn’t really. I knew what I was allowed to know, period.I made the conscious effort to read Anti-Officer as though I didn’t know the author on a personal level. I wanted to make sure that the image I already have of her wouldn’t cloud my judgement. I can honestly tell you that, even if I didn’t already know Sonja and think that she’s awesome and kicks some serious a**, I would have definitely formed that opinion after reading this novel! She begins her journey in the military with a ton of rude awakenings, finding out that there’s a lot more to it, than signing your name on the dotted line. Boot camp, survivor training, constant deployments and having to deal with people you’d rather not have interactions with, are just a few of the hurdles Sonja faces. But, she faces them bravely, ultimately finding a silver lining in mostly every situation. She has a wicked sense of humor, too, which gets her through a lot of strange and awkward situations! Like the guy who becomes her stalker. Or, the many times she has to deal with other airmen in the cockpit, the only woman on board. As mentioned on Amazon: Twists and turns, unbelievable international adventures and mishaps from England to Greece to Saudi Arabia to Japan, unveil a story you'd never imagine could happen to just one person. And in the end an uplifting message prevails: Let our human weirdness connect us all!Laced within her experiences, are the personal relationships she has with her family, like her boyfriend turned husband, turned ex, and the many revelations that come with the birth of her son. Everything is told from a realistic, no sugar-coating perspective, making it feel as though you’re going through it all with her.I came away from reading The Anti-Officer knowing so much more about Sonja than I’d ever imagined I could, and finding even more respect for her, and for the military, too. They do so much to protect and preserve our freedom, with honor. It was well worth the read!

Sonja has a way of telling her story in the most hilarious fashion... and it is a very interesting story! I had trouble putting the book down and I couldn't wait until I had free time to pick it up again! She is a truly talented comedic writer. I can't wait until the next one!

By Marc Lowe A very fun and interesting memoir about a wildly interesting person finding themselves. Ms. Landis' weaves in stories about her accidental Air Force career that are simultaneously touching and hilarious. If you are at all curious or have ever wondered what it is like to be a woman in the military, especially the high-flying world of Air Force spy planes, then you will enjoy this book. Actually even if you are not interested in those things at all you will still enjoy this book, as it is filled with many fish-out-of-water stories and candid shenanigans to keep anyone entertained. Although the bent of this book is mostly humorous, Landis isn't afraid to become vulnerable and share some deep personal struggles and turmoil, which gives the book heart. Besides just being fun to read, the book is motivational, and Landis, through her stories, inspires others to follow the beat of thier own drum and pursue what actually makes you happy. On a side note, as a former Air Force Fly Guy myself, I can attest to the world that she shares, is a hundred percent true! (But also give me insight on what it was like to experience that world as a female and a new appreciation for the women in our military). Thanks Sonja Landis for sharing your unique and different experience.

I am really growing fond of the Earl, and I am so glad the author has kept Belinda sweet natured. I will be purchasing part three directly.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun to read By Cory blue WMagpie is a real find-- can’t wait for more!So happy to come across this traditional-type Regency. It reminds me of some of Georgette Heyer’s books. Marjorie the “Magpie” secretly writes a gossip column so she can earn money to get away from her awful aunt. Fin the new Earl of Drake has to give up the navy and find a bride to preserve the family name. They have to discover they’re meant for each other, but a lot stands in their way. Looking forward to see how this budding relationship develops and how it will work out in the end. If you like sweet Regencies, definitely check out the Magpie Masquerade.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Just as witty and well thought as part 1 By Iinksil I am enjoying this series immensely. The quick-witted heroine as the magpie, her shy-sweet though not as quick cousin Beatrice and naval captain turned earl Fin. Even the often intolerable Aunt is lovable. Regency written with humor, imagination and fondness. I very much look forward to the future parts and highly recommend this mini-series to other regency fans!

The book is an easy and pleasurable read and the author displays a very engaging and enthusiastic voice on the subject of gluten. I liked how she challenges the reader with the following question -- "When did our health become an inconvenience?" A great rhetorical question and reminder that our health should never be regarded in this way.Lisa does an excellent job of presenting a variety of expert viewpoints from the medical and non-medical community on how gluten can negatively impact your body. It's also very nicely formatted and has a variety of pertinent quotes from gluten and celiac disease experts. She also discusses how gluten is found not just in many of our favorite foods, but also in many of the products we use. I was surprised by this, especially it's use in cosmetics. My favorite chapter was Chapter 9, which I found the most informative. She discusses the battles she had with her own doctors in getting diagnosed with celiac disease and the labs she's gone to to get the tests that give her the most complete results on her condition. I really enjoyed reading through this guide, it was a real eye-opener on all things gluten and I highly recommend it to anyone who's wants to remove gluten products from their life. Please note, I reviewed a complimentary copy of the book.

Building a foundation for health begins with listening to your body. This book emphasizes how you can create a healthy ‘do-over’ by tuning into your body’s signals and how misconceptions about our health can begin in the most unlikely places—such as the advertising industry and through political motives. Simple, but scientific at the same time, this book explains gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity, and the differences between these conditions. Celiac disease is alos introduced, and the author talks about how these conditions can be the underlying cause of many other conditions. I have celiac disease myself and found this book to be an excellent primer on all things gluten-free. With this book, you can begin to survive gluten-free food shopping, eat out gluten-free, and learn how to begin living again through a continued commitment to yourself. If you are ready to start feeling better, this inspirational book will introduce ways to achieve a gluten-free lifestyle, as well as an understanding of all the benefits that can come along with it!

This book has it all By Elaine Lombardi If you are looking for a really good book about going gluten-free look no further because this book has it all. The author starts out by stressing just how important it is to be your own health advocate and I couldn't agree more.I already had a pretty good understanding about the types of foods that most commonly contain gluten but I learned so much more by reading this book. I was especially surprised to find out just how many beauty products contain gluten. WOW, what an eye opener that is!I highly recommend this book to anyone with or without celiac disease who wants to learn more about gluten intolerance and how to make the most out of living a gluten-free lifestyle. The author shares so many helpful tips - from navigating the menu in a restaurant, to dealing with opposition from friends and relatives. I love the section she included on how to get your whole family on board.I found this book to be a very well written step by step guide. It's also very easy to read considering the amount of research it contains.

Whose fault is homelessness? Thirty years ago the problem exploded as a national crisis, drawing the attention of activists, the media, and policymakers at all levels―yet the homeless population endures to this day, and arguably has grown. David Wagner offers a major reconsideration of homelessness in the US, casting a critical eye on how we as a society respond to crises of inequality and stratification. Incorporating local studies into a national narrative, Wagner probes how homelessness shifted from being the subject of a politically charged controversy over poverty and social class to posing a functional question of social-service delivery. At the heart of his analysis is a provocative insight into why we accept highly symbolic policies that dampen public outrage, but fail to address the fundamental structural problems that would allow real change.

Confronting Homelessness: Poverty, Politics, and the Failure of Social Policy (Social Problems, Social Constructions), by David Wagner, Jennifer Barton Gilman

Review Not only does a thorough job of outlining the history of homelessness in the United States, but also brings attention to the minimal progress the United States has made in addressing this issue. (Contemporary Sociology)An excellent book; one of the best on the topic. Highly recommended. (Choice)A provocative and unique reconsideration of the movement to combat mass homelessness in the United States in the past decades. (Robert Hayes, founder, National Coalition for the Homeless)Wagner correctly explains the causes of homelessness and the essentials for combating it. After reading Confronting Homelessness, the reader will emerge well-informed of the political barriers and potential solutions to one of America’s greatest and most persistent social ills. (Neil J. Donovan, Executive Director, National Coalition for the Homeless)In his deft analysis, David Wagner traces the trajectory of homelessness and, especially, public responses to this enduring social problem. (Joel Blau, State University of New York, Stony Brook)An excellent overview of the contemporary social problem of homelessness in the United States … Provides a powerful way of understanding not only homelessness but other social problems as well. (Dee Southard, University of Southern Oregon)

About the Author David Wagner is professor of social work and sociology at the University of Southern Maine. Wagner received the SSSP C. Wright Mills Award for his book Checkerboard Square: Culture and Resistance in a Homeless Community. Jennifer Barton Gilman is an independent scholar.

Excellent By Kindle Customer RWM While Horation Norfolk painstakingly compiled this well over a hundred years ago, the epitaphs remain and are as entertaining today. Very British, most are written in centuries old English and sometimes Latin making for some deciphering in language. The sentiments are humorous, touching, downright sad and a lesson of morals of society some antiquated obviously and some live on. My only complaint in the ereader version was the editing. Instead of separating into chapters it just runs on, sometimes your not knowing you've moved on to the next epitaph. It's ashame someone doesn't upgrade this wonderful collection and include some photographs. How interesting to see these monuments. I'll be holding on to this collection to read and re-read. Excellent!

Thinking about death and dying is not something we like to do very much. This collection of Gleanings in Graveyards adds much humor to the reality every human faces. And, it also adds to the realities of life in every generation.
