Have you ever wondered what life was like before the internet, cell phones, and TV? Travel back to 1899 via the LINCOLN COUNTY LEADER newspaper and find out. You may be surprised at how little people have changed. Here's a sample of the news: Someone told us that John Ofstedahl was a logger and we still think he is even if he was rolled off from a big log into the water Monday. Accidents will occur in the best of families you know. He since told some of his friends that the temperature of the waters of Depoe in winter was just right for a plunge bath. The protracted period of sunshine is ended and we are having some nice weather again. Light showers prevailed last night and as we go to press the prospect is favorable for more. Good. A slight earthquake shook things up at Tillamook Saturday. Two houses were moved ten feet and the ground was torn open for 200 yards. St. Patrick’s day passed quietly in our city, only one altercation taking place. As usual it was whiskey did it. Al Waugh made the assertion that Jack Allphin drank 138 drinks to celebrate the day. Jack denied it and a scrap would have ensued if it had not been that Sam Owen was present. He told Al he was mistaken and told also where the mistake was made in the count and this averted a bloody encounter and the consequent breaking of an old friendship. C.E. Hawkins and Old Man Leader went to Chitwood Saturday to angle for the festive trout. Quite a number were led out during the day. The water was cold but each wore gum boots and did not get wet––until they fell down. ‘Twas hard to breathe properly and Hawkins almost burst before he stopped drawing in his breath. Four happy Dawsonites passed through Skagway recently with a canvas sack of Yukon gold that weighed 100 pounds dead weight, and which came from French gulch diggings on Eldorado creek. They are all Canadian citizens and first came to Alaska during the popular Klondike rush of December 1897. A billboard before a church in Paisley, Scotland, contains this announcement: “Only short sermons delivered here. Excellent music. This is the place to save your soul and be happy. Walk in.” One is forcibly impressed by the number of blind men seen about the streets of Fez, the capitol of Morocco. It is invariably attributed to the excessive use of coffee. Bedbugs are electrocuted by a new attachment, the side rails of the bed being cut in half, with two plates inserted at the break, which form the poles of an electric circuit, lying out of connection, the pest closing the circuit as he crawls from one plate to another. The Indians of Paraguay eradicate their eyebrows and eyelashes, saying that they do not wish to look like horses. Prospectors who have arrived from Alaska bring news that there are at least 400 prospectors on the Edmonton trail between Dease lake and the Hudson’s Bay post on the Liard river, most of whom are in destitute circumstances. Many of the men are said to be suffering from scurvy and frost bites. The sick cannot receive proper medical attendance and many are dying. A couple named Newton Lord and Jennie Helper were married in an eastern Kentucky town some days ago and the editor of the local paper was almost clubbed to death by the indignant groom because he made use of the heading, “Lord–Helper.” An exchange says that an old church member died, of whose goodness there was some doubt, but who was regarded as a pillar by the pastor, who posted on the church window a notice in these words: “Brother Johnson departed for heaven at 4:30 this a.m.,” and announced the funeral. Underneath this someone tacked a telegraph blank with these words: “Heaven, 9:40 p.m. Johnson not yet arrived. Great anxiety.” A St. Louis woman, after searching for six months for her husband, found his body in an embalmer’s office, where it was doing service as an exhibit. The man had been accidentally drowned.

By Barbara Mojica Interesting collage of state, local and international news posted in the Lincoln County Leader weekly newspaper posted in Toledo, Oregon. At that time the population consisted of 300 inhabitants. The 1899 eight page newspaper covered a plethora of subjects which paint a portrait of life in 1899. The postings range from what you would expect in a local newspapers, births, deaths, weather and local gossip to a larger view of the state, country and world. For example, readers learn that Venice is sinking and that the Yellow River in China has overflowed. On the local side, a reporter tells of a local woman who is able to locate her missing husband in a dream, and a murderer who has hung himself in his cell. We learn that the US government has more gold coin than it knows what to do with, and that paper money cannot be used for exchange in the Philippines because the bugs eat it. The paper reports that a rosary in the British museum is made of the vertebrae of a snake, and another one is made of rat's teeth.Sundry and varied for sure, but the tiny paper presents a remarkable picture of life in 1899 both here and abroad. An interesting, if random, arrangement of facts that makes for a pleasant afternoon of nostalgic fun.

This was my first time ever reading a book like this, and I found it fun and interesting By Val S This was my first time ever reading a book like this, and I found it fun and interesting! I love the way the writers thought about news and how they worded things all those years ago. I can only imagine how much work went into compiling these clips. I think the author did a good job of giving me a slice of life from 116 years ago -- the sad, the funny, the compelling and the absurd. "Oregon Clippings" is a little gem that you can enjoy in short bursts of time, reading a few clips at a time. But it may just interest you enough to savor all at once!

It is not a bunch of cliches' By Meredith I purchased this book as a part of my study of mindfulness and what I sometimes call 'urban zen' - using the zen principles while going through my day as a layperson. Some of the books on zen philosophy have been a little over my head, actually, but this one was just right! It is not a bunch of cliches' - it explains in detail the principles needed to develop mindfulness without just paying the concept lip service.I especially like having it on my Kindle because I refer to it wherever I am when I'm starting to feel anxious, as long as I have my Kindle with me.I think this book has helped me adopt many zen concepts more quickly - I highly recommend it!

I'm stressed out a lot these days and sometimes i have to just chill out and remember why I'm doing and what I'm doing. Reading self help books really do relieve stress for me and motivate me. I highly recommend this book, I always read it when I'm riding the train for an hour. It makes the ride zip through.

It wasn't that anything bad had happened, I just wasn't fully appreciating my life. When I started to read this book it immediately lifted my spirits and helped me to live in the moment. I read a few pages every day and looked forward to my time with the book to center myself. Unfortunately the book ended way too quickly! I didn't even think of looking at how many pages there were, only 20 pages? While it was definitely too short, I still feel it is worth reading.

Though only reigning for nine years, Henry V is one of the most famous monarchs that England has ever had.

Unusually for his time, Henry V was born the son of an English father and an English mother: he was, in the truest sense, an English King.

In the aftermath of his father’s reign, he calmed the vying factions of nobles and united the whole of England, before leading an almost exclusively English army against the ancient foe upon the field of Agincourt.

Henry V would become the archetypal national hero, his rule, his verve, and his ideals becoming the very idea of England and giving rise to something greater: the idea of national patriotism.

To this day he is still seen by some as the originator of some of our greatest forces, a restorer of the Navy, and a founder of military, international and maritime law.

Drawing upon the chroniclers of the time and vast array of literature that has since followed across the centuries, this study goes behind Shakespeare’s immortalised hero to explore what made Henry V the king he was, debunking myths along the way.

Robert Balmain Mowat (1883-1941) was an acclaimed Scottish historian, appointed Professor of History at Bristol University in 1928. During his lifetime he wrote a number of books regarding British and European history, ranging from the Ancient World up until the late Victorian era.

Most interesting for lovers of English history By Amazon Customer Although the writing style is rather dry and scholarly, and in parts the detail is mind-numbing, this book gives a fascinating insight into a truly great king. Had he lived a longer life, he may well have had the impact of Elizabeth I, and who knows how different the English nation might have been. The book deals with Henry's works and the effects on the nation, without really giving a feel for Henry the man. Nonetheless a good read.

First, the Table of Contents is completely useless after the first page of the first chapter. The last chapter ends 13 pages before it is listed. Secondly, the author provides genealogical connections throughout. Unfortunately, the book fails to provide an index to look back on previously mentioned figures. Thirdly, despite Henry V moving throughout England and much of modern day France and Belgium, not one map is provided. In desperation, I kept a copy of Desmond Seward's One Hundred Years War nearby (which I highly recommend). Next, this is a quote from page 175: "Apart from hi; general plans of campaign, he was also excellent oi of the field of battle, arranging his small force with great success, and being distinguished from most leaders of the Middle Ages by the skill which he used the physical features of the ground where his army had to fight." I normally ignore poor writing or editing as I'm after content. In this book, it cannot be ignored. Lastly, the author seems to be driven by wonderment of Henry Vs qualities (piety, affection by the masses, strength of rule and organization) that it appears throughout the book. Criticisms standout as they are so infrequent but then quickly dismissed by further evidence (?) that then contradicts the weakness in character just described. The author uses extensive use of writings from the following decades to present a picture of Henry. Too often the author then dismisses them as lacking factual support. I gave the book two stars only because I gained some knowledge of the incessant campaigns between England and France immediately after the battle of Agincourt.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. My man Henry By B. A. Morrison I don't know how many books about Henry V I have read or how many more I shall read. That question so many folk ask "who would you like to have at your dinner table" mine has always been Henry V. he has fascinated me since childhood in school, he is the epitome of a romantic King while being very quiet, withdrawn and deep but if you hit the right subject would open up and talk for hours. Not handsome but with features that draw you to him so that his looks nor his appearance are secondary. Having studied English History both in Boarding school and in The London Polytechnic, this book has a few arguable points but then any book of this nature has those I think it's for each reader to find their own way.

Ex-Navy SEAL Ty Brannigan has spent his FBI career tracking down the Russian mob, and the trail has led him directly to Morgan Kincaid’s door. Even though the evidence is damning, Ty can’t bring himself to believe that the eccentric beauty is in league with dangerous criminals. When the mafia targets Morgan, the pair has no choice but to set aside their suspicions and band together to bring down the criminal organization that would stop at nothing to keep them apart. *** The Best Man Holly Tanner has built a career on love and danger: her popular novels are chock full of them. But the truth is, she's never come face to face with either, and she doesn't expect that to change at her cousin's gorgeous wine country wedding. But everything changes the moment Holly meets Michael Silva. Suddenly, she's accepting dares, chasing suspicious peeping toms, and kissing under the moonlight. But even though Holly finds herself having the time of her life, she can't shake the feeling that danger is brewing behind the scenes, and that she and Michael are the only ones that can keep everyone at the wedding from becoming a target.

I really expected that she'd become a new favorite of mine. I loved the humor and how the author introduced us to the characters. It was hard to put down because it was full of unexpected turns. The second book was enjoyable and I appreciated how different her characters were from the previous novel. Their behavior was very believable given their backgrounds. The third novel was interesting as we learned more about the heroine however it felt like the author was in a bit of a rush and didn't take as much time with character development. Again, the plot took some unexpected turns. Unfortunately, she should've ended with the third novel. The novella left a lot to be desired. So after reading these three novels and the novella I'm disappointed that my original excitement for this author didn't survive. I wish I'd stopped with the first story.

There are 4 stories that interlock as the characters float in and out of some of the stories. Out of the 4 stories there are actually 3 full length, chaptered books and the final one is more of a no chapter novella. The only reason I gave this collection 4 stars and not 5 is because the final story, The Best Man, is rushed, not fully developed and I would have loved to see Michael get more of his story told, it was also a somewhat of a HEA but we are left hanging because Michael and Holly live on opposite coasts and Holly is a romance writer in a slump and I would love to read how they resolved their living conditions and if Holly found a new story. Still happy I bought this collection with 4 HOT, HOT, HOT FBI men and their feisty, strong and smart women!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Series I Highly Recommend By The eBook Investigator I enjoyed this series and the discovery of a new author. I have written separate reviews for each book but here is a run down.Book One - 'The Wedding Trap' was my favorite and I adored the love story between Alex and Beth.Book Two - 'The Agent Next Door' was my second favorite and again I enjoyed the deep love story between Erin and John.Book Three - 'The Trouble With Temptation' was good but it was my least favorite of the four. I had a hard time feeling the connection between Ty and Morgan.Book Four - 'The Best Man' was third in line. I loved that Michael from book three got his happy ever after and, although short, it was a good conclusion.

A must-have for musicians and artists By S DE CASTELL Like a lot of folks in the entertainment industry, I've gotten to work with Ken Ashdown and so was already a fan. The book that he and Helene Arts have created together is clear, easy to follow, and provides the tools and steps that creative people need in order to work together. The first thing that hit me while reading Conflict Resolution For Musicians was the example scenarios which instantly brought me back to band conflicts I'd experienced that came close to ruining careers and friendships. I wish I'd had then the tools that Helene and Ken provide in the book so that I could have better handled those situations, because the thing that kills bands is never the inevitable ups and downs of the music business--it's how the band members react to those events. Not knowing how to deal with business and creative conflict is why so many potentially great artists falter right at the moment when, had they kept it together, they could have overcome that last hurdle to success.I really and truly think this is a book that every musician and artist needs to have on hand if they're serious about thriving in the entertainment industry.

By Daniel Gogolin The book is pretty short (< 200 pages) and easy to read, but packed with useful and practical tips on how to prevent team breakups, whether that be a band or a business / company team. It also helps with explaining what to do if problems do actually erupt. It's been written with lots of examples that musicians especially can relate to, but I'm actually not a musician and I still found the tactics that were mentioned were totally applicable to other situations. I actually ended up having to try out some of these techniques for a business I'm involved with. Anyway - these steps will work for just about anyone in a conflict situation or trying to avoid one. I highly recommend the read."

Becker There are lots of practical, how-to directions for taking the heat out of a conflict and allowing people to talk to each other in a more civilized manner. The worksheets (included) are really helpful. They help you diagnose a conflict to see if you need to get help (and what kind to get if you need it); how to plan out your conversation so you don't accidentally make things worse; and other tools to keep on track.

I first read about Rafe and Claire in "All Fall Down" which is a clean romantic suspense (more suspense than romance). In that book they make a connection and we have a glimpse of what will come. In "Falling Slowly" we get a follow up on Rafe and Claire's romance and I loved it. It's sort of like a P.S..Rafe and Claire are back in real life, trying to figure out how to navigate this new and growing relationship in uncharted waters. This is a novella and so it went by way too fast. I wanted more. Yeah, greedy am I. I love all of Julie's books. They are fast paced and engaging. This novella was less suspenseful and focused more on the growing relationship which is such a perfect idea for in between novellas, I think. So fun! I REALLY hope she does this for all her books. That would be awesome! If you haven't read any of Julie's books, this is a great time to start! They are all fantastic. All Fall Down (Hostage Negotiation #1)Falling Slowly (Hostage Negotiation #1.5)Ashes, Ashes (Hostage Negotiation #2)From the Ashes (Hostage Negotiation #2.5)Pocket Full of Posies (Hostage Negotiation #3)Ring Around the Rosie (Hostage Negotiation #4)Also, just as an FYI, "All Fall Down" should be released April 15th as an audio book!

By Rachel Devaughn This novella (short story) by Julie Bellon takes place after book 1 of the Hostage Negotiation Team. This book contains 8 chapters and is very quick, fun reading. It follows Rafe and Claire as they return back from their mission in Afghanistan, and back to "real life" as they start to date and get to know each other romantically. Claire continues to stay very busy as her job as a Hostage Team Negotiator, but because of Rafe's injury he is no longer part of the SEAL team and doesn't know where he fits in.I absolutely love this series by author Julie Coulter Bellon and this novella doesn't disappoint! Would definitely recommend this clean fiction!I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review on my blog and social media. All opinions are my own.

By Debra Erfert FALLING SLOWLY is a short story that features Rafe Kelly, an injured Navy SEAL who had been taken hostage in ALL FALL DOWN that police hostage negotiator Claire Michaels rescued. We watched Claire and Rafe fall for each other in ALL FALL DOWN, but I wanted more, and evidently I wasn't the only one. Author Julie Coulter Bellon listened to her fans and wrote their love story in this romantic novella that takes place immediately after ALL FALL DOWN and before ASHES ASHES, the second book in this exciting Hostage Negotiation Series. Bellon has a rare talent for thoroughly pulling the reader into a story from the first page and keeping you turning the pages. The end came much too soon. I recommend this story for everyone who read ALL FALL DOWN and love Rafe and Claire as much as I do.

Apart from “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” — the pieces which made both Irving and The Sketch Book famous — other tales include “Roscoe”, “The Broken Heart”, “The Art of Book-making”, “A Royal Poet”, “The Spectre Bridegroom”, “Westminster Abbey”, “Little Britain”, and “John Bull”. Irving’s stories were highly influenced by German folktales; “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was inspired by a folktale recorded by Karl Musäus.Stories range from the maudlin (such as “The Wife” and “The Widow and Her Son") to the picaresque ("Little Britain") and the comical ("The Mutability of Literature"), but the common thread running through The Sketch Book — and a key part of its attraction to readers — is the personality of Irving’s pseudonymous narrator, Geoffrey Crayon. Erudite, charming, and never one to make himself more interesting than his tales, Crayon holds The Sketch Book together through the sheer power of his personality — and Irving would, for the rest of his life, seamlessly enmesh Crayon’s persona with his own public reputation.

The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., by Washington Irving

Review ) Short-story collection by Washington Irving, first published in 1819-20 in seven separate parts. Most of the book's 30-odd pieces concern Irving's impressions of England, but six chapters deal with American subjects. Of these, the tales THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW and RIP VAN WINKLE have been called the first American short stories, although both are actually Americanized versions of German folktales. In addition to the stories based on folklore, the collection contains travel sketches, literary essays, and miscellany. The Sketch Book was the first American work to gain international literary success and popularity. Its unprecedented success allowed Irving to devote himself to a career as a professional author. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

By Monika I must admit I bought this book solely out of a desire to read "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," probably the work Irving is most well-known for today. Every year on Halloween, when I was growing up, a small group of friends and I would watch the old Disney cartoon version of the story while we sorted through our candy. More recently, I fell in love with the 1999 live action adaptation "Sleepy Hollow" starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci. I figured it was about time I read the original story to see how these two films stack up in comparison. The rest of the material in the book was of secondary interest to me in making my purchase, but having now read it I can say that, while it wasn't quite what I expected, it was well worthwhile. The title is both apt and misleading by turns: "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and other stories in the Sketch Book." The use of the term "other stories" led me to believe that it would be just that - a collection of short fiction stories. Not so. There are three pieces in the book which would fit this description - "Rip Van Winkle," "The Specter Bridegroom," and the aforementioned "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - but the rest is a conglomeration of various other types of writing. The title "Sketch Book" is very appropriate. Irving has, in essence, provided us with a series of short, literary "sketches" on a variety of subjects and in a variety of styles. The topics vary, but they are also arranged in such a way that one usually flows smoothly into the next, lending a sense of continuity despite the variability of material covered.A large percentage of the book is devoted to the author's observations on life in England, himself, though an American, having spent 17 years there. Some are purely observational, and some have elements of fiction and imagination woven in, as is the case with "The Mutability of Literature," an interesting little piece in which Irving imagines a conversation between himself and an old book. Irving also occasionally ventures into the realm of satire. Other topics he explores include the differences between America and England, the role of women, English funeral traditions, Christmas, love, etc. He also did travel pieces, including the interesting "Stratford on Avon," which tells of his exploration of places connected with the life of William Shakespeare. Toward the end there are two pieces discussing the lot of Native Americans - not politically correct by today's standards, but offering an interesting insight on the mindsets of the time.I should probably take a little time to discuss "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" itself, since it was my primary motivation for purchasing the book and, I suspect, will be what draws most other modern readers to it as well. If you've only seen the 1999 movie version, do NOT expect anything remotely similar. The old Disney cartoon is much more accurate. It is actually a very short story - about 32 pages in length. Ichabod Crane is a schoolmaster (not an investigator as in the 1999 movie) in the town of Sleepy Hollow, and falls for the young and lovely Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina, however, is also being courted by a rival suitor, Brom Van Brunt. Following a town "quilting frolic" at which many tales of local superstition are told, including that of the Headless Horesman, Ichabod sets out into the night alone, is beset by a headless rider before he reaches is destination, and is never seen in Sleepy Hollow again. It is left up to the reader to determine what happens to him.The language of the book is antiquated, to be sure, having been composed in 1820, but it is not difficult to read. Irving's writing is very warm and inviting. He does tend to paint things rather romantically, and the England he shares with us is not the England of the Industrial Revolution during which the book was written, but this almost makes it more appealing as it opens up room for imagination. One must also remember that Irving wrote the pieces in "The Sketch Book" largely to combat his own depression, a condition he suffered from greatly, and he probably needed a cheerful outlet to distract him. We do, nevertheless, get a glimpse of his more melancholy thoughts in pieces like "The Widow and Her Son," "Rural Funerals," and "The Pride of the Village," all of which deal with death. The last chapter of the book, "L'Envoi," is a closing piece that was included at the end of the second volume of the London edition. It is an interesting collection of the author's thoughts on and explanations for his own work. He makes an interesting note on the ecclectic nature of the book: "His [the author's] work being miscellaneous, and written for different humors, it could not be expected that anyone would be pleased with the whole, but that if it should contain something to suit each reader, his end would be completely answered. Few guests sit down to a varied table with an equal appetite for every dish" (362). Also included is an Afterword by Perry Miller, which offers observations and insights on Irving's life and career.

By Thomas Moody Not to be read quickly and to be savored like fine wine, Washington Irving's "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon" is a matchless classic in American Literature. Written in 1820 and destined to become a true American literary pantheon (along with his preceeding work "Diedrich Knickerboker's History of New York), Irving introduces us to timeless observations and wit that ultimately become enduring discources defining early American Literature.Irving's mantra with this work is a set of observations, indeed "sketches" of his many travels and musings while roaming through England and his home in upstate New York along the Hudson River. The eternal figures of Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane are evoked in this tome and set a literary standard that others aspire to, but one that Irving effortlessly achieves time and again. Not only does this volume frame these two classics, "The Sketch Book" also contains other literary giants such as "The Angler", "John Bull", "Philip of Pokanoket", "The Specter Bridegroom", "The Mutability of Literature" and "The Art of Bookmaking" wherein the essence of Irving's literary style is neatly conveyed in the following:"Being now in possesion of the secert, I sat down in a corner and watched the process of this book manufactory. I noticed one lean, bilious-looking wight, who sought none but the worst worm-eaten volumes, printed in black letter. He was evidentley constructing some work of profound erudition that would be purchased by every man who wished to be thought learned, placed upon a conspicuous shelf of his library, or laid upon his table, but never read. I observed him, now and then, draw a large fragment of biscuit out of his his pocket and gnaw; whether it was his dinner, or whether he was endeavoring to keep off that exhaustion of the stomach produced by much pondering over dry works, I leave to harder students than myself to determine."With a style that has emitted diverse emotions (Lord Byron "unashamedly wept" over the melancholy pieces "The Broken Heart", "The Widow and her Son" and "The Rural Funerals") and having enjoyed over a century and a half of eminent popularity, Washington Irving's "aim in life is to escape 'from the commonplace realities of the present' and to lose himself 'among the shadowy grandeurs of the past' ". Readers tuned in to this philosophy continue to enjoy Irving's literary prose (by buying and re-reading his works), and also, by buying and reading, secure his reputation as a master in American Literature. When one has digested "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon" and "Diedrich Knickerboker's History of New York", one has embraced the essential works of Washington Irving and most would then assuredly join me in saying that he rates eminately in American Literary standing.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Irving the Satirist By A Customer There's more to Washington Irving than "Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". Irving's life was an enthralling tale of world travel, high society, and other, bookish diversions. He would have been, judging from the biography provided at the front of the edition I read, one of the most fascinating tale tellers of his day. That comes across in the Sketchbook; but we also get an idea of the wicked, roguish sense of humor, that impeccable feeling for satire that Irving could deploy even upon those people he loved most. The Sketchbook was written largely in England, at first as Irving was inheriting the family law business from his infirm brother. Rankling under the confines of business that can seem insufferable to the creative mind, Irving turned his full energy to writing. These sketches reflect a man passionate about many things, but who is always doctoring his reminiscences with timeless satire: Literature (The Art of Book Making and the Mutability of Literature, with, respectively, the writers of the new school being assaulted by the old favorites of western lit, and the talking book created in illustration of the fact of history's unkindness to many authors and receptivity to a few)is an abiding love to Irving, with every sketch preceded by a poem from antiquity to the works of Irving's coevals, and the stories themselves can make one believe Irving to have been downright pedantic. For what other reason would he break the flow of innumerable stories with lengthy and often only tangentially relevant allusions. Other stories, such as the delightful Christmas cycle and the numerous sketches with Shakespeare addenda, juxtapose Irving's love and ridicule of the English, especially the rural English, with their antediluvian customs (which Irving commends), and their increasing acquiescence to modern fashion (which he abhors). Ironically, the very people whom he often ridiculed as pretentious, bombastic, destructive, prejudiced, and insensitive, loved him, perhaps because, at the same time, he lauded them for their refinement and their characters so analagous to those of the American people, whom he proclaims a young people, while the British should be something like elder statesmen, big brothers if you will. The Sketchbook is delightful reading, if you can get past the author's bookishness and often archaic language.
