By Redmommy25 After I finished “Use Somebody,” the debut novel from author Riley Jean, I had to just sit and be still. I couldn’t move or I would have been sick; why? Because I had just come down with a serious case of book hangover.The Scarlett that we are introduced to in the first chapter of the book is not the same Scarlett who shows up in the second chapter. In fact, after reading the first chapter and then starting the next, I actually scrolled back to the beginning of the book to make sure I wasn’t missing something. That’s how effective Riley Jean’s writing is. I literally re-read the entire beginning of the book, from the dedication through the first chapter, to make sure my copy wasn’t somehow screwed up. Nope, it wasn’t! In Scarlett, Riley Jean has created a character so complex that it feels as though we were dealing with multiple individuals instead of one person.You’ve read the synopsis of the book, so you know that Scarlett returns to her hometown after suffering a traumatic night, in an attempt to move forward and maybe even heal herself. She changes her name to Scar, dyes her hair jet black (from Goldilocks to Raven, as it were), and just tries to survive, day in and day out. Her father, who is as cuddly as a porcupine sitting on a cactus, insists that she gets a job while she is living at home, so Scarlett procures employment at Mooshi, a local ice cream shop, and that is when and where Vance Holloway enters her life.Vance. Holloway. Never did a more perfect name exist for such a man…err, character. I mean character. He is funny, perceptive, honest, reliable, handsome, charming, and loyal; in short, he is everything every woman wants in her dream man, unless that woman is Scarlett. She just wants to be left alone. And that’s fine with me, because I’ll take him…err, once again, I mean…right.This book is long, and there is far too much to summarize here. I can’t even get into all of my feels about Ricky Storm, except to say that I’m still crying and I won’t ever be able to utter his name. I’m pretty sure that Riley Jean interviewed my very first love to create Ricky Storm, and I’m also pretty sure that my heart was ripped out of my chest unapologetically in almost every scene involving Ricky.Use Somebody feels like two books; the first half is a bit funnier and more playful than the second, and I tore through that quickly. I loved the banter between Vance and Scar; every scene involving these two was magical.The second half of Use Somebody is weightier. It took me longer to read digest. I cried more. I was frustrated more. I wanted to scream at Scarlett a whole lot more. And then, when I thought I was close to the end, Riley Jean sucker punched me. She had already ripped my heart out, and then she kicked me while I was down. This book is full of twists and turns; it is far deeper than it appears on the surface and there is a tragedy that snakes its way through the story that is so unexpected I had to stop reading, dry my eyes and blow my nose, and then try to finish the book without waking up my husband.Use Somebody: 5/5 Stars. Well-written, engaging, funny, authentic, heartbreaking, and transformative.Quotes“A couple was dry humping in a corner. Or so I hoped.”“Duh. This is an ice cream parlor. When she’s bullied by a girl, an angel named Gabriel steps in and saves the day. The next time we see Scarlett, she goes by Scar, dyed her once blonde hair black and she has a major chip on her shoulder. And she cannot stand her lead at work named Vance. Vance is goofy and simply wants to see her smile. Only problem is, Scarlett doesn’t want to smile. She doesn’t want to feel, she barely wants to exist. And this begins the story of Scarlett and Vance.I’ll be honest, Vance is unlike most romantic leads. He’s sweet and funny and listens and lets Scarlett come to her own conclusions. He’s confident in himself as a man and doesn’t need to be alpha of anything. It’s refreshing to see a romantic male lead being like that. Scarlett doesn’t know her butt from a hole in the ground most days. Only thing she knows is that she’s too messed up for him and she’ll hurt him. And she was right on target with that one. At least from my opinion. I will say throughout most of the book, I wasn’t a fan of hers. I wanted to tell her to get over herself so many freaking times, and tell Vance to find someone worth his time. To be honest it wasn’t until the end that it all came full circle and I got a better understanding of her and her despondency. I still liked Vance so much more, but by the end I was rooting for them to end up together.Ms. Jean writes a very detailed world both in the present time and in the memories of Scarlett. And I like how she lets just enough through so that when all is out on the table, it shows you just how much Scarlett refused to acknowledge the truthful events of that one Valentine’s Day night. The book was a little long for me, but that’s a matter of personal taste. Overall it was an interesting read. So the question begs to be asked. Brilliantly written, each sentence is flawless and well, undeniably from the heart. Use Somebody will gnaw at you and make you keep flipping its pages.["You, I thought. You and your ability to make me feel beautiful, desired, respected and confident all at the same time. Even in our secret, unconventional, limited relationship, never once had I felt like anything less than his entire world."]Getting to know Scarlett Rossi and her demons (slowly) will make your heart trickle with anxiety. Getting to know Vance Holloway will make you want to glide over a rainbow and never return. Getting to know Ricky Storm will make you want to reach out and soothe him. And getting to know Gabriel, well... it'll make you question your heart and your mind.["A wound that leaves you disfigured. Maybe it heals. Maybe eventually it doesn't even hurt anymore. Still, it'll always be there, a constant visual reminder that you'll never again be quite right."]At times, I felt like screaming at Scarlett! All because I knew HE would be able to understand and look past everything. At times, I got mad at HIM for pushing HER too hard. That's how raw everything felt.I found myself in love with every character in the book. Yes, even the nasty ones. Why? Because they were so beautifully portrayed. Real. That's what it was. The book was real. Riley Jean evoked all sorts of feelings within me. Pain. Happiness. Confusion. Devastation. Longing. And what-ifs...A story of forgiveness. A story of faith. A story of love-comes-softly. A story that's bound to stay with you for a long, long time...
