George W. Graham joined the Union Army in 1861. He started out as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 24th New York Independent Artillery and transferred to the 3rd New York Cavalry. He gained some fame as the man who burned the bridge at the Battle of Goldsboro Bridge in North Carolina. However he would soon be remembered more for his pillaging while he was with the 1st North Carolina Union Volunteers. Later, as a commander of the first of the Buffalo Soldier troops, he met Buffalo Bill, served with Medal of Honor winner Louis H. Carpenter, and was suspected of running a gang of horse thieves. After being court-martialed at Fort Leavenworth he moved further west where his reputation as an outlaw and troublemaker followed. By the time he died at the hands of a town fed up with his meanness and attitude, he'd made national newspaper headlines. Despite being the kind of imaginative story one would see in Western pulps, it was quickly forgotten. This is the result of three years of research, beginning with the author's discovery of a lone photograph in Kansas, and ending after extensive travel and examination of yellowing papers in various archives. It is not a book detailing Civil War battles or history of the Tenth U.S. Cavalry, but a biography of a soldier who had many chances, and who attempted to rewrite his own history.Several rare photos are included, some from low resolution copies, but viewable.

From the Author When I came across his photo, I knew he had a story to tell. I had no idea however that it would take me from the east coast to western frontier ghost towns. Upon moving to North Carolina, I discovered he was notorious in the area during the Civil War. He would later lie about his native state and attempt to recreate his past. I feel I've found it. I am also hopeful that, once his story is out, other pieces may come to light.Although I have written for journals and newspapers, compiling this, my first book, was both maddening and joyful. To think this all started with a photograph with a name written upon it...

About the Author Heidi M. Crabtree has worked for and volunteered at military and history museums, mainly as a researcher. She has written local history and travel articles for various military newspapers and conducted historical tours of Army posts.Areas of historical interest include the U.S. Civil War, the WWII Home Front, and finding lost stories of interesting characters. An idea of a relaxing weekend is hitting the road and visiting historical sites or hunting for more local bits on her book. She is searching for any Cartes de Visites of Graham. This is her first book.

When I got my own copy of Not a Soldier I found out that the story is even more amazing than the description By Dowell Kanner When I read the description of this book I thought the topic was exaggerated. Who is this George W. Graham? How is it he started out as a Civil War hero but wound up as a bandit? What was his real story?When I got my own copy of Not a Soldier I found out that the story is even more amazing than the description. George W. Graham had a short but amazing career. When commissioned in the 1st NCUV he somehow managed to mount his company and took part in most of the larger raids against Confederate territory as well as conducting small raids on his own. In the Indian Wars he was notorious not just for his conduct on the frontier but for the stories he told about himself. And when he found himself kicked out of the Army he didn't have much further to go before he found himself living the life of a bandit.Ms. Crabtree has done some great work researching this topic and it shows. The research makes one realize that this is not a novel but a real-life story about someone whose record was there to be found. Her writing keeps the reader engaged in the story and almost makes you feel like you are there with her, bringing this story back to life. A very good book that touches on the Civil War, the Indian Wars and the Old West all at once.

I can't recommend it highly enough By Amazon Customer In my opinion, this is a MUST read for any student of Eastern North Carolina American Civil War history. Heidi Crabtree’s hard work has allowed her to publish a well written and superbly researched historical work that finally sheds an important light on one of the state’s most notorious characters—George W. Graham.Crabtree’s discovery of primary source documentation is evident throughout "Not a Soldier, but a Scoundrel: The Lives and Deaths of George W. Graham." She does a masterful job of piecing the information together, combining both the military and human interest side of Graham. It is a readable, and worthwhile experience for anyone interested in Civil War history, as well as the post-war period in the American West.Well written, it is a welcome addition to your library. I can't recommend it highly enough.
