Butterfield is sitting next to her, holding her hand, and bolstering her as she goes through the most traumatic events in her life. Although Carried by Grace is written for mothers of victims of sexual abuse, readers facing other life challenges and traumatic events will find a wealth of practical steps for getting through those challenges. She addresses the shame and silence surrounding sexual abuse. She emphasizes that only the perpetrator is guilty. She put on a brave face as do other mothers, but she was an emotional wreck. Along with professional counseling and prayer, she found comfort, guidance, and wisdom in the Psalms. She is sharing what helped her hoping it will also help others facing sexual abuse of their children. Debra shares the story of her daughter’s sexual abuse and suicide threat, of her son’s transgressions and accountability, of her ex-husband’s lack of remorse, of her divorce, of guilty feelings and of always trusting God to get her through one day at a time. Over and over she was required to “give ‘her’ worries and cares to God.” Each chapter has her story, reflections, practical action steps, and prayers. Chapters include conquering fear, anger management, stress relief, forgiveness, grieving, accountability, learning to trust, and many more stages emphasizing God can get you through these dark periods. Just as a person goes through stages of grief in different sequences, going to healing in traumatic events is in stages. Debra suggests the readers read the parts of the book addressing their current stage. The reader may not feel ready to read God’s promises, but can come back to them when ready. Carried by Grace is a guide peppered with Bible verses to be used as needed, not to be read and stuck on a book shelf. May each reader experience healing with God’s help to progress with appropriate actions to make things better in a new ‘normal’ life.

A courageous and carefully crafted devotional By Socratic Parent Carried by Grace is a well-organized and well-written resource for any Christian mother faced with the heartbreak of discovering that her child has been sexually abused. Butterfield uses her personal faith and experience to reframe the issues constructively and in a way that provides both comfort and guidance toward healing. Each chapter begins and ends with a Bible verse and contains the following sections: My Story, Reflection, Action Steps, and Prayer. With 28 chapters, the book is designed to be read over a single month, one chapter each day, but is also a useful resource to return to when faced with specific issues such as anger, doubt, guilt,stress and bitterness. Butterfield includes seven Appendices: Prayer of Salvation, Five Steps to Finding a Good Lawyer, and Questions to Ask a Prospective Counselor, Who I Am in Christ, Additional Resources, How to Read through the Psalms in a Month, and How to Start a Journal.

Very helpful for parents of children who have experienced abuse or sexual abuse. Provides inspiration and biblical truths while navigating such a hard trial. Book was in great condition and arrived quickly.
