By Charli McGee I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.It has been about a year since Becca lost her fiance, Nick. She is still dealing with the loss on a deep emotional level when Sean, Nick’s best friend and soldier buddy, returns from duty. Becca tries to welcome Sean back at a gathering, but has a breakdown and runs out. Sean follows her and they realize that they are both dealing with losing him. Becca finds that spending time with Sean actually helps, but begins to wonder what it would be like to move on and have another relationship—with Sean. She struggles with feelings of guilt until Sean expresses the same.Sean gives Becca a box of Nick’s things and they find that Nick had purchased tickets for their honeymoon. Sean thinks that Becca should go and enjoy taking a break, but Becca doesn't want to go by herself. So she asks Sean to go with her. What ensues is an adventure that neither expected.I LOVED this one!! I think the emotional aspect hooked me right from the start. Becca's loss is very evident, which I latched onto quickly. I fell in love with both of the characters. Becca is a strong, yet sensitive, woman. Sean seems to be happy to be out of the service with no ill side effects. (I have several friends who have served that have shared their stories. I cannot imagine what it would be like to come back and readjust.) I love that they are able to find comfort in each other, initially as friends. The story flows really well and I really didn't want to put my book down! Great read!!

By Amazon Customer Becca Lander and Nick Becker had a cute teenager love story no matter how short lived it was, they loved and planned to have a future together until Nick lost his life when he was in the army...Becca started to heal with the love and care from her family and the good people of Pride.Sean Farrow Nick's best friend returned back home from the army, Sean always had a crush on Becca but never made a move cause he respected and loved Nick like a brother....the former brought Becca the personal affects of the latter and that gesture just opened up a lot of painful wounds..... Becca discovered that Nick had planned a cruise trip for them for their honeymoon.Not wanting the trip to go to waste and seeing that the tickets were non refundable, Becca decided to go on the cruise and asked Sean to go with her...At first he hesitated but then agreed to go, they helped and comforted each other over losing Nick and in the process they realized that there's was this undeniable attraction between them.Sean's guilt over being with his best friend's girl lessened after he spoke to Nick's parents..... Sean and Becca took their relationship to the next level as they continued to grow closer, an incident threatened to tear them apart .... Becca and Sean didn't give up hope and fought for their love.What a beautiful ride it was to read about Becca and Sean's journey and it was a delight to catch a glimpse of some of the characters and their expanded families.....Once again Jill Sanders left me spellbound with her awesomeness.

By Terisa Return to PrideBecca had loved only one man in her life, that was her high school boyfriend Nick. They had planned to marry when he got home from serving in the special forces, start a family and live in Pride, Oregon. A freak accident took that away from her though and while she was devastated, she knew that it was time to move on. Now a year later their best friend Sean was coming home. Inseparable since childhood, they joined and had left together but only one came home. Sean brings with him Nicks belongings that includes a secret for Becca that even he didn't didn't know about. With time running out, they embark on an adventure that puts both of them in situations that feel both wrong and right at the same time as well as one that could end in tragedy.This was another great addition to the Pride series! You get brief glimpse of last characters so that you get somewhat caught up in their lives. I quickly fell in love with series from the firs book and can't wait to see what Ms. Sanders comes up with next.

It is certainly a great book, because it's an easy read By Vijay Jonnalagadda It is certainly a great book, because it's an easy read, has simple language, clean organization of the topics, small chapters, interesting analogies, and relevant to the fast societal life we are in.Looking into yourself has become more important in last few years as our social lives, and person lives are amalgamated thanks to the Technology. So important that, unless you grow strong internally, you will be eaten alive by the stress and peer pressure and what not :)I will end this review with one analogy used in the book: Your soul is the driver of the car which is your body. Think about that for a second and imagine how much transformation can happen inside. That's like the whole religion out in a simple sentence. Get your soul hiding inside out.- Vijay

By John Keefe Christine has written a powerful book filled with insights, challenging questions and great affirmations for building a fuller, more meaningful life! This book begs for two actions- for Christine there is a sequel that must be coming. For me there is a second reading that will involve pen and notebook so I can become interactive with responses to the challenges and at the same time build changes that I want to see in my own life as I expend the Time, Talent and Treasure I have left available during this life.I highly recommend this book and plan on getting copies into the hands of my children and grandchildren that they might face life with greater insight far earlier than I did! I admire her transparency, appreciate her willingness to share her wisdom, and applaud her passion for seeing lives changed. Many things she shared resonated with me especially (one of her affirmations on) forgiveness, freeing your mind, and being in alignment. I bought two copies and gave one to a friend. I sincerely hope she has plans for a companion workbook.

Lincoln's Secretary tells it straight By Mark This history of the outbreak of the Civil War is unique in presenting it from the perspective of Lincoln's personal secretary. The man was a participant, and on the legal aspects gives some very clear headed arguments. Much of the precedent goes back to the aftermath of the American Revolution. There were two steps to creating the federal government of the United States. First, each colony had to declare independence from England (which they did together in one document). The individual colonies could now agree to enter into a larger confederation of colonies. It was not at all clear that this would happen, as many had different interests. For that reason the constitution does not outlaw slavery, and fails to address whether member of the union can later secede. These and other touchy issuies might have been deal breakers.The Southern Secession required a similar process, which raised some paradoxes. Nicolay argues that, constitutional ambiguity aside, none had the authority to issue articles of secession. Simply put, it is not among the defined powers of the governors or legislatures. Their oath of office requires them to support and defend the constitution of the United States. But secede they did, after which -- as independent states -- they were free to enter into a new confederacy. Here is where Nicolay finds contradiction in their arguments. They seceeded over the issue of states' rights. But having done so, promptly surrendered them to a new confederacy. Nicolay says, probably due need for immediate action, the confederate constitution was largely taken from the original. Among key changes, the statement that all men are created equal was striken. But there was also no provision allowing a state to secede from the new union. Essentially, Nicolay argues the states' rights issues was merely a pretext.He points to a single man as setting events in motion -- Governor Cist of South Carolina. He wrote a letter to other governors asking, if South Carolina should secede, would the others follow? The answers were ambiguous, but things were set in motion.Nicolay argues that the slavery issue was only vital to a very few states, and even there only to influentual land owners of the deep south. For the ordinary person there was little or nothing to be gained:"Drills, parades, meetings, bonfires, secession harangues, secession cockades, palmetto flags, purchase of fire-arms and powder, singing of the Marseillaise -- there is not room to enumerate the follies to which the general populace, especially of Charleston, devoted their days and nights. There was universal satisfaction: to the conspirators, because their schemes were progressing; to the rabble, because it had a continuous holiday."Of all the states, only Texas submitted the articles of succesion to the people for a vote. Texas was a special case because it had only been in the Union about twenty years. Sam Houston was disappointed because he expected the Federal army to help police the Mexican border, but they did not. Houston's scheme was to secede but not join the Confederacy. He believed Texas could conquer northern Mexico, gain access to the Pacific, and be positioned to suceed as an independent nation. The legislature threw him out and went with the Confederacy.The battle of Bull Run is especially well covered, and turns out quite unlike the simplified accounts. A good survey of the struggles in the border states is also given.* * *This book is part of a series of 12 short volumes on the land war published in 1882-3. It took congress twenty years to finally allocate funds to all the documents and communications sorted through. Americans could at last have an inside look at who actually said or did what, and when.While that massive project was still underway, the publisher of this series persuaded highly qualified people - most of them participants -- to produce a quick readable history in light of the new information.M.F. Force ("From Fort Henry to Corinth"), says, "The main source of information is the official reports of battles and operations. These reports, both National and Confederate, will appear in the series of volumes Military Reports now in preparation [by] the War Records office in the War Department."Alexander Webb ("The Peninsula") adds "To be of any practical use, all history, and particularly military history, must be gradually sifted and reduced to small compass."Jacob D. Cox ("The March to the Sea - Franklin & Nashville") sums up purpose and limitations: "The class of readers which has been most in mind [includes] includes the surviving officers and men who served in the war. [My] aim has been to supplement their personal knowledge by the facts ... of recent research. To give unity and symmetry to the ... campaigns here told, by examining each in the light of the plans and purposes of the leaders on both sides. The limits assigned... made it necessary to choose between the narration of incidents which would enliven the story, and that fullness to strictly military detail which seemed necessary to make the several campaigns clearly intelligible, and to enable the reader to judge, with some degree of satisfaction, the character of the operations. ...the effort to do so will give to each a broader understanding of what the great game of war really is."This is what these short works accomplish in spades. With good maps at hand, the text is easily followed, often with amazement at the sorts of things that can and do routinely occur on campaign and in battle. We see armies so pestered by the random and unforeseen that one wonders how anything is accomplished.But the above assumes good maps - and here the books fall short.Cox: "The maps ... are reduced copies of the official surveys made by the engineers of the army. ... In reducing them it has not been possible to preserve all the details of the original... The reader is presumed to make reference to an ordinary hand-atlas... To have illustrated the text by larger and more elaborate maps would have thwarted the purpose of the publishers to put the series within the reach of all."You do need more detailed maps that supplied in most popular military atlases. There are several solutions. If the maps in a particular volume are printed clearly, they can be enlarged on a Xerox machine. Alternately, simply google under Images for, say, "Wilderness, 1864" and you'll likely find an amazing variety of choices to print out.Back in the 1880s, the full sized official government maps were available in a large folder. These were photo reduced to a still legible size, and presented in color, in an 1891 oversized book titled "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War."B&N reprinted this book in 2004, photo-reduced 10% (to 13 ½ x 16 ½"). You can get a used copy on Amazon for $20.00. The only odd thing is that all maps are placed completely randomly, apparently whatever will fit where. You have to consult the appropriate index, which will list all plates (facing pages) containing a relevant map.* * *To give a sense of the value of these books, (1) I've posted some of my personal maps from these books. When a caption isn't attributed, it's mine, warts and all.(2) You find remarkable eyewitness observations such as this in Palfrey's "The Antietem and Fredericksburg." The Union having been defeated at 2nd Manassas must move to block Lee's attempt to cross into Maryland or Pennsylvania. The fastest way for these haggard troops to do so is to march back through Washington and then west."Washington and its environs presented singular sights in the early days of September, 1862. The luxury and refinements of peace contrasted sharply with the privations and squalor of war. There are few prettier suburban drives than those in the neighborhood of Washington, and no weather is more delightful than that of late evning there, when a cooler air comes with shortening days. As the shadows lengthened in the golden afternoon, well-appointed carriages rolled along those charming drives, and by their side the ragged, dusty, sunburnt regiments from Pennsylvania trudged along. Rest, cleanliness, ice, food, drink, every indulgence of civilized life were within reach, but our hands could not be stretched to grasp them. ... The carriages returned to their stables, the fair ladies returned to the enjoyment of every pleasure that Washington could confer, but the Army of the Potomac moved steadily northward to bivouac under the stars or the clouds, and to march again in its tatters through the dust and the sunshine, through the rain and the mud."(3) The actual communications among commanders is fascinating.(4) Basically working through these books with maps is a quick read, but also has the fascination of working through a book of logic problems. The essential information available to commanders is in your hands also. The Outbreak of Rebellion.From here you can follow either East or West Theatre first:IIA - Eastern Theatre(3) The Peninsula - after the failure of Bull Run, and attempt is made to capture Richmond by a naval landing.(4) The Army under Pope; while Union troops are evacuating from the failed peninsula effort, Lee turns on Pope and inflicts another defeat at 2nd Bull Run. Lee then attempts to cross the Potomac and invade the north.(5) The Antietam & Fredericksburg; McClellen having returned from the peninsula stops Lee's invasion at Antietam but fails to destroy his army. Burnside takes over and pursues Lee to Fredericksburg, where the Union army self-destructs in an assault on its fortified heights.(6) Chancellorsville & Gettysburg - Hooker replaces Burnside and tries to take the Union army around Fredericksburg, but is bluffed from the dense forests around Chancellorsville. Lee again breaks free and this time invades Pennsylvania but is stopped at Gettysburg.(11) The Shenandoah Valley in 1864; this valley is a thorn in the Union's flank, and is ultimately razed so Union forces can operate more freely in the east.(12) Virginia Campaign of '64 & '65; Lincoln is desperate to end the war. Grant promises to do so at a price. It will be bloody, but he wants all losses immediately replaced to his army remains at full strength during the long bloody grind to Richmond.IIB- Western Theatre(2) From Fort Henry to Corinth; The Confederacy hoped to fortify the upper Mississippi in Missouri and Kentucky as a jumping off point to invade the north. Grant wrests the initiative, and with the fall of Forts Henry and Donelson. After Grant's decisive victory at Shiloh, the Union never loses the initiative in the west.(8) The Mississippi; the struggle for Vicksburg, which puts the entire Mississippi in Union hands.(7) The Army of the Cumberland; the struggle for Chattanooga; Union defeat at Chickamauga, besieged at Chattanooga, final breakout of the siege.(9) Atlanta; Union drive down the critical rail line through hard country from Chattanooga to Atlanta.(10) March to the Sea & Franklin/Nashville; after Atlanta, Sherman's famed march to the sea, after which he very nearly links up with Grant driving down on Petersburg.CAUTION:This series is public domain. Many publishers offer cheap digital scans with illegible maps and text that is difficult to read -- apparently this reviews stepped on one such land mine.The best editions by far are those from DSI digital scans, with flawless text and clear maps. Most of the have the "Look Inside" feature so you can see for yourself.For some unfortunate reason, DSI's editions usually don't appear when you search these titles. Try searching a title with DSI after the name, but even that doesn't always work.The Da Capo edition is also good. It's editions are a little smaller in size but of high quality and with excellent contemporary introductions.Final comment - I'm no expert or professional Civil War buff, so don't treat anything I've written as such. This is merely a reader who has derived great personal pleasure from this series. I've tried to convey a sense of what was so enjoyable to me.

I highly recommend this as a reference to see the start of the war as sit was experienced at the time.

Brilliant comes to mind.I wish there were more than 5 stars to rate.I purchased The Hero in Heroin after meeting the author at a workshop. She is someone that would be consistently described as beautiful, intelligent, friendly and career successful.On the pages of this book I got to meet a mother, wife and author sharing, in a very deep and personal way, her life uncertainties and struggles that kept me glued. I had not expected a book that I couldn’t wait to see what happened next, a definite page turner.Mindy’s story, from the beginning to present time, is with her son, Micah, his addictions and hissuicide at 31 years old.Their personal story, told old over many years of difficulty, is shared with insightful awareness for all of us who read it. Using writings, from both of them, they teach us about dealing with events of life we all hope we will not have to face.Heroin, and drugs in general, have not been a part of my life, but I was able to relate to Micah’sstories on how it took hold and controlled him. I had, during my younger years while trying to feel included, a serious bout with Manhattans and alcohol in general. The tricks my mind and body used to justify the next drink, after swearing I would not do that again, were not just similar, they were the same.Mindy has taken her tragic event, with all of it’s sorrow, and offered to all of us an opportunityto look deeper within. As she shares with us the drive of a mother’s love, doing everything she could possibly do, by the end of their book we understand the meaning of the title.

Less Than Convinced By gale There is much about spirituality that I do not grasp even though I have spent much of my time looking for answers after the death of a loved one. The first part of this book was very interesting. However, when the author moves into her spiritual relationship with her son after his death, I found myself questioning; were her experiences real or were her experiences fabricated from the mind of a mother desperately seeking peace after her son's suicide? Or, the more cynical side of me, did she just want to sell books by tapping into the emotions of those who are always asking the question, "what happens after death"? Perhaps, I am just the wrong audience. The author used terminology which I did not fully understand. Terms, I'm certain, readers more involved with the spiritual world would immediately recognize. I felt there was too much of the author just knowing that her son was near her, sending her messages, arranging circumstances just to communicate with her, visions, dreams . . . . all neatly lined up. All told with great detail, which assumes absolute recall. I truly hope everything she has to say about the spiritual realm is absolutely real, but, does anyone really know?I would like to add that Micah's writing's at the end of this book were moving and felt very real. In fact, I thought they were the best, most honest part of the book. My heart ached for the young man who wrote these words, while admiring his talent as a writer.

Johns, Jr., who recently celebrated her 84th birthday, called me today to advise that a friend had just stopped by her home in Austin, TX. with word of this site and the fine reviews of "The Clay Pigeons of St.Lo", written by my father Colonel Glover S. Johns, Jr. We would like to thank those of you who have treasured this book - a labor of love, pride, dedication and, at times, agony - as much as we have. I want to take this opportunity to salute and thank all those who served with my father and those have shown support for my mother since the Colonel's death in 1976. My father lived "The Clay Pigeons of St.Lo" and gave the book what he gave battle and his men: his very best. It is, indeed, a timeless and monumental work - monumental in its testimonials, monumental in its anonymity, and monumental in its unheralded magnitude. Lee Johns, son of Colonel G.S. 18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Infantry battalion faces Hitler's elite in drive on St Lo. By A Customer This is truly an outstanding book on infantry action in WW2. The book focuses on the month long drive to take the town of StLo in the opening round of the Normandy campaign.Specifically it focuses on a battalion of the 115th Inf, 29th Div that Major Johns takes over in June '44. The action is very fast paced, Johns is a good story teller and reveals his relationships with both his superiors and subordinates in great detail.The book is more than just a "leadership textbook" however, the war's human toll is shown as well. The action takes place in hedgerow country, where tanks, artillery and airpower have limited effect, the adverseries are mostly from Hitler's elite Falschirmjager, so it is a tough fight the whole way. During the battles,Johns loses the bulk of his staff, and I think all his original line company commanders, wounded or KIA. This is infantry warfare before BC's hovered above the battlefield like immune gods in Hueys and staff and support were miles away. Major Johns faces all the same hardships as his men. I hope they reprint this book, mine is getting pretty dog-eared.On another note, Colonel Glover S. Johns is highly praised by David Hackworth in his excellent work, "About Face". He was Hackworth's commander in 1961 and led the 1/18th Inf task force into Berlin (under JFK's personal orders) when the cold war was at its hottest, and was featured in an issue of Life magazine that year.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A Unique World War II Memoir By Grant Waara This memoir is unlike any other memoir of World War II that I have ever read. Johns relates the stress, the worry, the fear, the exhaustion, the humor and the camaraderie with the ease of a seasoned storyteller. For the unseasoned reader, Johns's device of telling his story in the third person will take some getting use to, but that's done after only a few pages. More telling was Johns' own reasons for using third person, "people who fight wars up close to the enemy are not the same while they are fighting as they were before and after...His (Johns) life during that time always seemed that of another person." After that, "Clay Pigeons" is a fast read. Sadly, Bantam books never reprinted this now forgotten classic. Let's hope someone will do such a service and bring this book back. It demands a reprint.

Second phase of the Peloponnesian War By JPS This book does look in detail two of the most significant characters on either side of the great Peloponnesian War. It focuses on the showdown in and around Amphipolis that led to both their deaths in 422 BC and allowed exhausted Sparta and Athens and their respective allies to sign a peace that would however be short lasted and turn out to be no more than a breathing space.The book, however, offers more than what its title and its synopsis. It is essentially a summary of what is sometimes termed by modern historians the “second phase of the Peloponnesian War”. It also covers, although more briefly, the outbreak of the war and it causes, and it contains a brief historical introduction of the main events between the end of the Greco-Persian Wars and the outbreak of the so-called “Peloponnesian War”. This is the name that Thucydides gave it and which has “stuck” ever since, while the Spartans and their allies seem to have called it “the War against Athens”.For those that are familiar with the period and conflict and, in particular, for those which may have read Donald Kagan’s four volumes on it, this book covers the two first volumes: “the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War”, which ends with the death of Pericles, and “the Archidamian War”, which ends with the peace that follows the battle of Amphipolis and the deaths of both Cleon and Brasidas during this battle. Also used by Mike Roberts to come up with his book are a number of other academic authors, such as Cartledge and Lazenby on Sparta, but also Hammond on Macedon, Wilkes on the Illyrians and Hornblower on Thucydides, the main source for the period and the particular episode that Mike Roberts has chosen to focus upon.This is a valuable book for anyone wanting to get to grips with this little known episode and appreciate its importance, but also with the strategies carried out during the Peloponnesian War. It shows rather well the importance of the fight for Amphipolis, and the dominance of the North that would result from it. In particular, the coasts of Thrace and Macedon, along which Athenian shipping would pass, and the timber and metals that these two regions provided, made its control strategic for both Athens and Sparta. Another interesting feature shown by the author is to show that this was the Spartans’ response to the Athenians’ attacks on their territory and the occupation of Pylos following their defeat there.A second element that makes this book valuable and well worth reading is that through the narrative of the conflict up to the clash at Amphipolis, Mike Roberts also presents his two main characters and their respective achievements, both of which were rather untypical in their respective cities. Brasidas had already taken part in a number of campaigns and played a significant role in some of them, as well shown by the author, although he does not seem to have exercised sole command until he left for the North. Cleon, contrary to Brasidas, was not first and foremost a warrior and commander but a politician of a new kind and, as one of the heads of the more radical demagogues, he seems to have played a significant role in criticising and undermining Pericles during his last years. He also portrayed himself as the main victor at Pylos. He was reviled by his Athenian opponents and hated by Thucydides for reasons well explained in the book which contains interesting discussions of his achievements and to what extent he could claim credit for them.A third element, and perhaps the most original, is the narrative of the Northern campaigns themselves. These are generally little known but their economic importance and the potential impact that they could have on the war which had largely become a stalemate was significant and out of proportion of the numbers engaged on either side. This is where the strategical and tactical skills of Brasidas are displayed, with the Spartan managing to take the main Athenian base (Amphipolis) and overrun several other Greek cities in Chalcidice with limited resources. The respective leadership styles and their differences are also well shown by the author when describing the final battle. However, even if Cleon was not a general and warrior of the same calibre as Brasidas and did not take the same level of risk, both leaders lead from the front, as they had to, and got killed in battle.Finally, and while Mike Roberts does NOT offer “a valuable new perspective” on the Peloponnesian War, contrary to what the “commercial blurb” indicates, he does offer within a single volume a very valuable overview and summary of the first decade or so of the war, its causes, and two of its main protagonists. He also offers an accessible narrative and analysis of these events and brings together in a single volume and in an easy to read style multiple strands drawn from numerous academic publications, including discussions on how reliable our main source for these events – Thucydides – really was. It is for this, rather than its supposed “new perspective”, that this book deserves five stars in my view.

Twice Loved By LMN11 Four and a half stars"Twice Loved" is the "sweet/clean" version of "Shades of Honor", so if you have already read "Shades of Honor, Grayson Brothers, Book 1", then you have already read this story. Personally I thought this story was very good as it was, and didn't feel that there was any need for any sex scenes. In fact I think sex scenes would have greatly detracted from the book and my opinion of its characters.The summary: Evelyn is engaged to Kyle Grayson, her childhood best friend. While she doesn't feel romantic lovr for him, she knows he will provide for her and her aging father. But when Radford Grayson, Kyle's older brother, returns to town, things go haywire. Grayson has avoided his family ever since he returned from the Civil War. Tortured by things he saw and did in battle, he struggles to form relationships. And he has difficulty figuring out how to care for his young daughter Rebecca.But Evelyn somehow manages to get through to both of them. She quickly takes on a mother role for Rebecca. And before she knows it she is forming a strong bond with Radford, a bond she has never been able to form with Kyle. Should she stick to her engagement and marry Kyle, or should she give herself the chance to fall truly in love?This was a very good book. The characters were well developed and the plot believable. I liked the Civil War details that were included. Radford clearly had post traumatic stress disorder following the war, but at the time this was not recognized and not understood. But I love how Evelyn didn't judge Radford, but was warm and caring and eager to help him.Little to no typos also made this a great read.Overall, I really liked this book. I recommend it.

The more I read, I was sure I had read this book before and was equally sure that I did not already have a book by this name. Investigation proved that I already had this book by the name of "Shades of Honor" by Wendy Lindstrom. I was not especially offended but puzzled about why two exact same books would have two different names. If this was Amazon's fault, it needs to be corrected and offered under one name.I really did not object to reading this story the second time, however. I enjoyed the development of the story and gleaned more details from it the second time around. Ms. Lindstrom is certainly a good author who can hold your attention and leave you wishing for more. The ending was terrific!

By romancereader Twice Loved is a wonderfully-written, emotionally-gripping story of a woman torn between the man she is committed to marrying, and the man she loves. Wendy Lindstrom creates a compelling picture of historical Fredonia, NY and the Grayson family, and draws the reader into the lives of her characters. A fantastic first "sweet novel" in the Grayson series, it invites us into the lives of Evelyn, Radford, and Kyle but also teases us with glimpses of Duke and Boyd Grayson and entices the reader to want to read their stories as well.Radford is a troubled soul, haunted by his experiences in the Civil War and suffering from the nightmares and flashbacks resulting from those experiences. The author's realistic depiction of his nightmares and the scenes from the war draws the reader into the pain that Radford experiences. He finally returns home 5 years after the war, with his 4-year-old daughter in tow. The author draws us into the strife between Kyle and Radford created by Radford's return and creates an environment where the reader can actually feel empathy for both of these men who are fighting for what they believe most important to them. Kyle is also engaged to Evelyn, Kyle and Radford's childhood friend and the daughter of Radford's confident and leader during the Civil War. The love triangle that ensues between Kyle, Radford, and Evelyn is heart-wrenching and beautiful at the same time. They each experience their own anguish and hurt as the story unfolds and the reader is drawn into the emotions that each of them feels.The author should issue a pack of tissues with each book purchased! The sign of a book that completely draws you in is one in which you find yourself crying and laughing along with the characters in the book - and Twice Loved did that in spades! The love and the heartache both create an emotionally-charged situation leading to the climax of the love-triangle. As Radford continues to struggle with his inner-demons, Evelyn struggles with her feelings for Radford, her desire to continue running her family livery, and the failing health of her father. It's a shame that Evelyn and Radford's happily ever after had to come at Kyle's expense. While I found myself rooting for Radford and Evelyn's happily ever after, my empathy for Kyle wants him to find his as well.I thought it was masterful how the author created Evelyn's father's love story with her mother to parallel Evelyn's struggles with her feelings for Kyle and Radford. It enables Evelyn to draw on the strength of her parents love as a means of following her own heart. Her father is a delightfully engaging character and a wonderful means to help draw Radford and Rebecca back into life in Fredonia. The author's use of secondary characters to create a picture of Fredonia really makes the reader want to step back into post-war Fredonia with the Grayson's.Twice Loved is the "sweet" version of Shades of Honor. I had read Shades of Honor a couple of years ago. Prior to reading this book, I was curious to see how the author would be able to ensure a smooth story line while removing the sensual aspects of the story. I was pleasantly surprised; the story flowed so seamlessly that I couldn't tell where the sensual scenes had been removed. And I didn't miss them! I enjoyed the story with the sensual scenes in Shades of Honor but this story was equally enjoyable, compelling, and emotionally-charged even without those scenes. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an "intimacy-free" historical romance. For those looking for a more sensual story, Shades of Honor will deliver!
