  • Seven Common Therapy Methods for AvPD
  • How to Choose the Right Therapy Approach
  • How to Overcome AvPD: 7 Steps
  • How to Find Your Escape
  • Conclusion
Topics covered include cognitive skills therapy, psychological therapy, self-isolation, extreme sensitivity to criticisms, and self-deserting behaviors. An excerpt from the book: In reality, the first step in any help for someone with Avoidance Personality Disorder is an intervention of the way they are currently living their life. If the person is unable to see a problem or find help on their own, friends or family should try to intervene. Sometimes people do not often see what is right in front of them, especially when they live a life of seeing things differently from other people. When friends or family begin to see a strong withdrawal, especially when it turns into self-isolation, they need to start taking steps to help their loved one recognize that there is an issue and that help is needed. Unfortunately, those doing what they think are in the best interest of someone they care about can often make things worse. With a patient that has AvPD, taking care not to insult, reject, or humiliate them is important. This means that a well-meaning friend forcing an AvPD friend to attend a movie or go shopping is actually doing more harm than good. The friend does not realize that by forcing someone she cares about to directly face such a large fear at one time can cause the fear to get even more severe. If, instead, the friend slowly introduces a new friend to the AvPD sufferer, and the patient is being introduced in smaller increments, they have a chance to get used to the process of meeting a new person under their current restraints. For the most part, though, intervention should basically focus on helping the person realize that living with AvPD can be tolerable and helping them get professional assistance in overcoming their problems. I fit all the DSM qualifying criteria to a tee. I have read books by Millon (x5), Benjamin (x2), Young (x2), Linehan, Kantor, Beck et al on personality disorders, as well as various other less informed and less directed authors. I met with 25 psychochologists/psychiatrists inside and outside hospitals, and had hundreds of counselling sessions - all on this topic. In addition, I have analysed and obsessed over this topic for many years in an effort to get relief from the chronic and severe dysfunction I have. This book touts itself as "The Ultimate Guide". This is utterly untrue. It is, at best, "A First Introduction" - I personally gained nothing from it. The book is 68 pages of large print, double spaced on small pages. It can be read and fully absorbed in well under an hour. It has just 2 references - both come from a single website. The contents of the book itself are representative of this dearth of research. It consists of generalities again and again. For example at one stage it says something like "your therapy may be once or twice a week, or more or less than this". This statement is near meaningless - it covers all possibilities! Unfortunately the book itself is like this throughout - covering all possibilities, not ruling anything in or out, and not making any insight. Where it does make a good suggestion, this is happened on by chance in a list of possibilities. There is no indication the author knows the "good" from the "bad".The book was cheap - it cost me something like $12. Although it has no insights, I can see it as having merit for someone who is completely unfamiliar with personality disorders and clinical psychology. It reviews the diagnostic criteria (albeit symptoms, not underlying causes), and presents various options for treatment that have been touted that the beginner can then read more about from more informed sources. For me, "The Ultimate Guide" remains Lorna Smith Benjamin, whose books provided enormous insight into my personality disorder (and effective treatement) far beyond any other source I have encountered (either in print or in person). Her books, however, are not aimed for the lay reader. To appreciate them fully a lot of groundwork needs to be done in terms of learning about all the 14 officially-recognised personality disorders in terms of the personality modes that we use everyday. I don't know of a good single source for this. However I can say Martin Kantor's earlier book, although flawed and disordered, has many excellent concrete examples of AvPD. So, for those wishing to absorb about how AvPD looks like in real life, this is one place to try next.

Many of the books described me somewhat, but , this book I feel was written just for me! Every page read like I wrote the book myself. I finally am having some sort of hope. I am gonna talk to my psychiatric doctor about this. So far I have only been treated for my depression and now I realize it's much more then that! Thank you for this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book has some pretty good information in it By The Pickle Pie This book has some pretty good information in it, but it's very poorly written and therfore hard to read. There clearly was no skilled editor involved. Unfortunately, I'm noticing more and more books like this on amazon lately - - written by amateurs in a weekend or. Low quality. Short. Disappointing.

You never know who is watching, listening, or being influenced by your words and deeds. Therefore, you might be leading and never even know it! That's why everyone, especially the proverbial village it takes to raise a child, must lead by example. Believing that parenthood is the most important leadership role anyone will ever have, the author uses her comfortable, conversational style to candidly share personal anecdotes about the parenting choices she made in raising her own son to "live like a leader." This book addresses qualities most of us want to possess, traits we expect our leaders to exemplify, and virtues we pray our children will learn. But not content to have her readers merely be passive consumers of information, the author creates an interactive environment by embedding in every chapter carefully constructed questions that encourage self-reflection and promote self-growth.

What a wonderful tool for young parents By Kim Hoff Just as the author states, I too, was extremely frightened when I held my firstborn son in my arms. When we were sent home from the hospital, the only thing we had been given guidance on was the "baby bath demonstration." I knew we would need much more information, training, guidance and education than that if we wanted to do the "right" thing for this precious life we had been blessed with. That was back in 1988 - if only Lynda had written her book then. What a wonderful tool for young parents. It is a quick read, but is packed full with great parenting tips. This book will become my, "GO TO" baby shower gift! As an educator, I would like to see it as a parent resource in our school libraries as well, because it's never too late to learn new and improved parenting skills. It's an invaluable tool to assist us in raising what is most precious to us all, our babies......Our Future.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. First Hand Observation By Debra Briscoe I personally have known this author for many years, as a mentor in education and as a dear friend. I also knew her sweet mother Madge and watched these two ladies raise Todd up first hand. Todd was close in age to my two sons, therefore Lynda shared the bleachers with us for many years. I always admired the extra effort she took with her son, such as being his tennis partner or just supporting him from the bench. She had a stressful administrative position and could have easily just let him loose in our small town of Cotulla, but he was always expected to go above and beyond in everything he did and he did! This is a true story for I watched it play out to produce the leader in her son just as she planned.

The stories, or essays, or perhaps poems in disguise, collected here are somewhat whimsical. They emerged from simple questions: What is Zen? Who was Confucius? What was it like to be a kid in Japan 10,000 years ago, or 1000, or 500? How did death come to seem, as it did for many centuries, so much more important to the Japanese than life? It is the author's proud boast that, though the questions are treated in some depth, not a single definitive answer emerges.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Blossoms are not beautiful in spite of their transience By Wally Wood Michael Hoffman's new book, In the Land of the Kami: A Journey into the Hearts of Japan, is a fascinating and well-written collection of (mainly) essays. Hoffman has lived in Japan since 1982 and all but three of these stories appeared in the Sunday Time Out section of The Japan Times. First, to translate the title. My dictionary defines "kami" (神 ) as "a god, a goddess a deity, a divinity, a divine being." And of course it may be plural, so in Japan we're in the land of the gods.As Hoffman says in his Author's Note, the topics are somewhat whimsical. They came not from what he knew about the country and the culture but what he didn't know and wanted to understand. What is Zen? Who was Confucius? How did death come to seem, as it did for many centuries, as much more important to the Japanese than life? What was Japan's Jazz Age?Hoffman admits up front that he is no scholar, and he relies on literary translators and scholars for his sources. (This means, of course, that a reader who wants to know more about a topic can hunt up Hoffman's citations for a deeper and fuller discussion.) Because he is writing for a non-specialist audience that lives, I assume, mainly in Japan, what the nineteen non-fiction stories may lack in scholarly depth they more than make up for in accessibility and charm. (He includes a brief play and a fable, neither of which I found as engaging as the essays.)As an example of the kinds of provocative questions he attempts to answer, consider this: "Do the Oriental hermit-sage-poets of old, lonely and rootless, innocent and childish, wise with a wisdom they themselves call foolish, neither listening to reason nor, with any consistency, speaking, have anything to say to us of the wired world?" He thinks they do and suggests why.The pages are studded with interesting insights sharply expressed: "In place of the Judeo-Christian notion—violated often enough but never lost from sight—that life is a gift, the Japanese have another notion, no less deeply embedded: that of impermanence. Flowers fade, cherry blossoms fall... Blossoms are not beautiful in spite of their transience. They are beautiful because they are transient."Another example: "Empty space is an acquired taste. Americans aren't bred on it, and some, probably most, see nothing in it. One, writing in an expatriate Yokohama newspaper in 1881, observed, 'The Japanese are a happy race, and being content with little, are unlikely to achieve much.'" In the Land of the Kami has interesting things to say about Japan and Japanese culture and history. i.e., "Shinto defies a direct approach. It is easier to say what it is not than what it is, easier to say what it lacks than what it has."A large literature of books by Westerners explaining Japan and the Japanese exists. Many of these are written by people who neither speak the language nor lived in the country for a couple years. Hoffman, through long residence and extensive reading, brings a depth and nuance to his essays that those books do not have. This is for anyone who would like to know more about Japan.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Remarkable Revelations By gordon brodfuehrer Mr. Hoffman has unearthed a myriad of remarkable observations, historical and otherwise, which clearly reveal the complications, contradictions and incredible depth of Japanese culture.

Of these purges, the most notorious was the Night of the Long Knives, a purge in the summer of 1934 that came about when Hitler ordered the surprise executions of several dozen leaders of the SA. Nonetheless, for the most part Hitler enjoyed great popularity among both the members of the Wehrmacht and ordinary Germans during his rule over the Third Reich between 1934 and 1945. To many, he appeared to be the spirit of a revived, powerful Germany, shaking off the hardship and humiliation imprudently inflicted by the victorious western Allies at the end of World War I. His strangely magnetic, ranting speeches struck a chord with millions, creating iron loyalty in many of those who followed the commands of his dictatorship. From the very beginning, however, others held a different view of the newly constituted Third Reich's Fuhrer. Though the concept of tyrannicide remained so foreign to German culture that the word only appeared in the national language after World War II, as the war progressed and Germany's fortunes faltered, more individuals and groups plotted the death of Hitler. The climax of these efforts took place on July 20th, 1944, but Hitler himself recognized his eminence and notoriety as factors making him the target of assassination attempts years earlier. Though his own stated figure of seven attempts to kill him falls on the low end of the actual number of quietly thwarted plots, the Fuhrer knew he was a target and deliberately acted in an elusive fashion. Most assassination schemes against the German dictator centered on the use of bombs to kill him. Such attacks, of course, theoretically increased the chances of killing Hitler, since a blast would create a far larger “fatal area” than a bullet or even a spray of bullets from a submachine gun. Additionally, the bomb's user need not directly risk their own lives or figure out a way to get through Hitler’s security, which necessarily watched most closely for human threats rather than completely hidden objects. A few would-be assassins planned a more direct approach, prepared to sacrifice their lives shooting the Fuhrer point blank. Siegfried Knappe, a Wehrmacht major attached to Hitler's bunker staff in the final days in Berlin, expected (incorrectly) that the Russians would execute him and therefore nearly decided to shoot Hitler down with his service pistol. Only the thought that his action would birth a new “Stab in the Back” legend restrained him. Through it all, Hitler eluded many of the attempts on his life without ever realizing his risk. Most plotters escaped undetected, baffled by the randomness and secretive nature of Hitler's movements. The Fuhrer frequently canceled prearranged engagements, arrived at other locations with only a few minutes' advance notice, used different trains than originally planned, and generally proved constantly unpredictable. When Hitler traveled by air, he not only brought a detachment of fanatical SS guards, but also highly trusted personal physicians and cooks, and his own personal car, the latter armored and already thoroughly checked for sabotage and booby traps. Beyond all his precautions, the Fuhrer sometimes almost appeared protected by incredible – or uncanny – luck. Despite the enmity of the world and the increasingly violent opposition of his own officers, the Third Reich's leader lived until he chose to die, as though destined by some dark fate to perish only by his own hand.

By Bill Anderson Length: 70 pages. After a brief history of The Night of the Long Knives to serve as a foundation and introduction, this short booklet launches into discussions of several attempts to eliminate Adolph Hitler. For those not familiar with 'Long Knives' is wish Charles River Editors would provide a hot link to their booklet of the same name on Amazon. Not for me, mind you, for I have read that historical account, but for others who have not perused it.Probably the one attempt that is most striking, or most telling, was the careful, brilliant attempt to save the world the folly that Georg Elser felt sure was destined. The would-be hero had a brilliant technical time bomb place at the ideal location and at what, ordinarily, would have been the ideal time. Murphy's Law foiled his plot and his own, uh, foolish decision to travel with proof (or implications) of his cunning plan doomed the idealist to a less than noble death.I had already known of most, if not all, the other plots discussed, but still found the review of them interesting. The Elser attempt, though, resonates and is haunting.Especially, the narrow escapes by the evil Hitler would likely have persuaded even a sane man of his special relationship with destiny. Like so many other fortunate heroes and villains before and since Hitler's rise and fall, the Austrian tyrant would finally come to realize his good fortune all those times was merely chance, not fate. The writing and editing in this CRE production is especially good, in my view. While I may have missed an error or two, no such typos or spelling errors jumped out at me as I read this in a single sitting.Definitely a worthy addition to any historian's Kindle library.

When the widowed Miranda Tyrell escapes a dire situation in Kent by accepting a position as governess in Lincolnshire, taking her young son with her, she never dreams she is jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. Instead of peace and safety, Miranda discovers the flat agricultural plains and salt marshes are rife with tales of mysterious fires, gutted animals, and strange sights and sounds in the night. Her new charge is a disturbed nine-year-old known as the Demon Child. In addition, rumors supported by the local curate claim that her employer, a badly scarred veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, is a demon. And those are only the beginnings of her troubles as she attempts to teach two fatherless boys and deal with her wayward heart, which she swore would never love again.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable , well written story. I have already read it more than once. By RegencyMiss A very enjoyable story. It is a Regency Gothic so there is some violence and people being murdered. A woman flees her home and goes to be a governess with her small son. As the woman at the employment bureau says; a widow can have a child, a governess can't. However a place is found where the governess is needed for a boy about the age of her son. All the tropes of a gothic are present but often in an altered form. The heroine is human and amazing. A very enjoyable story worth reading and rereading.

By Kindle Customer Young widow and her son forced to leave their home in Kent seeks employment as a governess at any place that will except them both. She finds it at Fenley Marsh, where the Lord and his son are deemed demons by the surrounding community! The widow decides to form her own opinion and was taken with the scarred Lord and his mischievous son sensing there was more to mysterious sightings and events than met the eye! Obviously an investigation and a lot of love was needed to conquer the two 'demons'!
