On January 7, 1916, Antonio Pontón, a Puerto Rican student at Albany Law School who suffered from mental illness, became the first Hispanic executed in the electric chair at the Sing Sing Prison in New York. Author Yasmin Tirado-Chiodini tells a fictionalized account of Pontón's story in her historical novel ANTONIO'S WILL, A Story of Sacrifice, Love, Tragedy and Injustice, the first book in The Antonio's Series. This second book, ANTONIO'S GRACE, An Island's Plea for a Native Son, is a work of non-fiction in which the author takes a closer look at the trial and clemency process in the Pontón case. In it, she shares photographs and a selection of the thousands of documents she found, containing clemency writings endorsed by over 21,000 people who prayed in vain for grace for Pontón. Tirado-Chiodini's research and analysis of the case one hundred years later uncover the injustices surrounding Pontón's murder trial and examine the viability of the death penalty as a just measure. The names and voices of clemency have returned after a century to plead once again for an island's native son. Will you listen? BONUS: The book's Appendix includes a transcription by the author of over 21,000 names of individuals and organizations who signed clemency petitions in the case, an invaluable resource for historians, anthropologists, academics, and genealogists.

I was taken back to the early 1900's when Puerto Rico became part of the US. The uncertainty of its citizens and the discrimination suffered by both the elite and educated people, as well as the poor and uneducated. Puerto Ricans were one, united for one cause. I was astonished to see that several of my ancestors signed the petition. Loved the book, the material, and the history behind this story. A must read for anyone who feels the death penalty should be abolished. Like Dead Man Walking this book makes a very strong argument against the death penalty!! "Better a guilty man go free than an innocent man be put to death or imprisoned" Bravo!!!!

Early 20th Century Nonfictional Account of Puerto Rico and New York By jrlb62 Once again Yasmin Tirado-Chiodini transports the reader to the early 20th Century with the story of Antonio Ponton, this time as Puerto Ricans who are the New Americans trying to save the life of one of their native sons in New York. It brings to light the efforts of a united Puerto Rico and questions the existing mores of the penal system in New York. A must read for those who are ambivalent about the penal system and the use of capital punishment.

"If ever there were such a thing as an all-time 'best' western, The Log of a Cowboy is it." The New York Times

“As a narrative of cowboy life, Andy Adams' book is clearly the real thing. It carries its own certificate of authentic first-hand experience on every page.” -The Chicago Herald

“If all other books on trail-driving were destroyed, a reader could still get a just as authentic conception of trail men, trail work, range cattle, cow horses, and the cow country in general from The Log of a Cowboy.” -- J. Frank Dobie

"Personal and often poignant.…'The Log of a Cowboy' is indeed a classic." --Sybil Downing, The Denver Post

Oklahoma was still "Indian Territory," Little Big Horn was a recent memory, and Native Americans were in the last shameful stages of being forced off the open rangeland. In "The Log of a Cowboy," Adams captures the excitement and the reality of the old West, including routine days and nights punctuated by episodes of another kind: a rigged horse race, in which the cowboys lose several hundred dollars in wagers, two saloon shootings, the breakdown of the chuck wagon, pulling cattle out of a boggy river, meeting potentially hostile Indians, an encounter with cattle thieves, and a long drive across a waterless expanse of Wyoming.

Born in Indiana in 1859, Andy Adams is celebrated as one of the most important chronicles of the range cattle industry and the fictional cowboy. Originally published in 1903, The Log of a Cowboy is based on his experiences there and has long been considered his best and well known work.

One of the best of this genre By kdavis@cwnet.com This book is a lot of fun to read, taking the reader back in time to a late-1800s cattle drive from Texas to Montana. The book is written well with spare prose, wit and exceptional details about a cowboy's often difficult and sometimes boring life on the trail. There's refreshingly little of the syrup found in so many western stories. It's written simply enough for pre-teens interested in the west, yet it will yield a lot of enjoyment for the seasoned reader.

41 of 42 people found the following review helpful. One for the "Lonesome Dove" bookshelf By Ronald Scheer Andy Adams was a prolific writer, and thanks to the University of Nebraska Press, some of this former cowboy's output is still in print. This true-to-life story of an 1882 cattle drive is his best known, and its retelling 100 years later in Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" is evidence of its importance among early works of Western fiction. Here the protagonist is a young cowboy much like the author, who trailed beef from Texas to Montana at a time just after the buffalo herds were being extinguished from the short grass prairies and homesteading had not yet fenced in the high plains. Oklahoma was still "Indian Territory," Little Big Horn was a recent memory, and Native Americans were in the last shameful stages of being forced off the open rangeland. The railroads were snaking across the land making frontier boom towns where law and order either prevailed (Dodge) or more often did not (Ogallala), and the vast cattle herds of Texas and Mexico finally had a market and access to it.Adams was born into this world and as a young man cowboyed during the height of the cattle drive era. His book is an account of one trek, delivering 3,000 head of cattle to the Blackfoot Agency in northern Montana. For the protagonist, the initial excitement wears off once the daily routine is established, and besides the occasional stampede and wet weather, the highlights of the journey are brief visits to the cowtowns they pass along the way and the many river crossings, some of which pose enormous difficulties. We get to know all the men in the outfit by name, and a few stand out, including Flood the foreman, McCann the cook, and the protagonist's trail mate The Rebel, who is older and wiser and something of a mentor. Other personalities emerge, primarily around the campfire on nights when the men get to swapping stories. And Adams passes on a lot of first-hand knowledge about trailing cattle, riding horses, and the day-to-day operation of a drive. Days and nights of the routine are punctuated by episodes of another kind: a rigged horse race, in which the cowboys lose several hundred dollars in wagers, two saloon shootings, the breakdown of the chuck wagon, pulling cattle out of a boggy river, meeting potentially hostile Indians, an encounter with cattle thieves, and a long drive across a waterless expanse of Wyoming.Reproduced from the original edition published in 1903, the text has an old fashioned look and feel that suit the subject matter and the prose style well. There are also five illustrations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed "Lonesome Dove." Adams captures the excitement and the reality of the old West before it was romanticized and mythologized by the movies and popular fiction. As companion volumes, I would recommend Ramon Adams' "Cowboy Lingo" and "Come an' Get It," which provide much informative background on open range cowboying. With a good road atlas at hand, you're also able to follow the track of the drive across six western states, from Brownsville to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Truer than Lonsesome Dove and just as good! By Bill Anderson I have found this to be one of the best western books ever written. Written 100 years ago it has the feel of life in the late 1800s not glossed or romanticized. If you're interested in this book take a look also at the website westwardho dot us. Although they don't intend to print fiction, they are thinking about making an exception for this terrific title. Why?The folks at westwardho say, "Log of a cowboy is so near to truth that it is hard to call it fiction. It certainly is more true to life than some of the news articles written in the recent past!"I appreciate much of the modern miracles we take for granted - internet, mobile (cellular) phones, satellite TV and the ability to produce tremendous, special-effects driven movies. Still, I wonder if we are missing something in all our instant self-gratification lifestyle...Don't get me wrong, I am not one to call the old days the good days. We not only have more luxury today, we also have more opportunity and greater political and intellectual freedom. I am merely trying to point out that many of us fail to seize opportunity and fail to recognize the value of our more primitive instincts.Read THE LOG OF A COWBOY and see if you don't also wonder. Then also try finding a copy of Africa's equal, MEMORIES OF A GAME RANGER. If you also will peruse my ABOUT Me profile at Amazon's book reviews and you'll find a few more gems you probably never heard of but that you will thoroughly enjoy - Bill Anderson.

To Inga, serving wasn’t just a job — it was who she was, right down to her bones. The picture of the tall, dark and handsome physician in the assignment profile intrigued her more than the money he offered, more than the generous live-in accommodations, more even than the chance for her to be a caregiver to his two young children in America. No, the picture of the childrens’ father sparked something else in her — an even deeper desire. A need to serve him. For Inga still yearned to serve a man — in every way he required. A prominent surgeon, wealthy, attractive, and successful, Garrett seemed to have the perfect life. But underneath all of that, he knew one thing for certain: he was a mess. Losing his wife had been devastating enough, but raising two children — alone — only made recovering from her death that much more difficult. Somehow they’d made it through though, scarred, but together. Now, it was time to do something positive, time to take a step forward. And that started with finding someone who could give his two beloved children what he couldn’t — a woman’s touch, a woman’s caring, and a woman’s love. The lovely blonde woman from Sweden would do nicely — she loved the children, and they loved her right back. He’d just have to ignore the dramatic curves of her lush body, those gorgeous Nordic blue eyes, and the way her sun-kissed skin seemed to glow when she smiled. Yes, that wouldn’t be a problem at all. Right? Not a problem that is until he learned what she really was, what she really wanted — and what he’d needed all along. Another woman to kneel at his feet, another woman who obeyed every command he’d give her, another woman to worship him in every way he demanded. Perhaps he’d finally found what he was looking for, but he’d never know for sure. Because the one woman he wanted, was the very woman he couldn’t have. How could he make Inga his, in every way a man could, when she was the caregiver for his own flesh and blood? Publisher's Warning: Intended for mature readers. 18 and over only! This is a MF BDSM contemporary romance. Themes include: graphic sexuality, M/s, exhibitionism, orgasm denial, spanking, bondage, anal play and other BDSM activities. If such content might offend you, please do not purchase this book. Word count: 52,964 words

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. HOT Fun and Romantic By Summer Graystone Wow! This was such a great story! I adored Inga and her little rubber duck. This was such a fun story and I haven't seen one like this in a while. This is a BDSM book with children. Yes children and I LOVE how the relationship of Inga and Garrett changed as the story went on. Their relationship with each other and with the children. This book has a lot of yummy spankings and some that aren't so yummy but there is the wonderful aftercare. Now can I mention that this book is HOT! Ms. Michaels has an incredible steamy sizzling Dom who has a lot of rules to enforce. Garrett is first and foremost a father but he can't just hide his other side... his Dom side. When Inga and Garrett connect for the first time... well there are certainly sparks and I know your kindle will catch fire as you need some alone time with your bed. WARNING: Batteries are not included with the purchase of this book.

Adams ~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads Review Team~This is the second book in the series and I have found that this author likes to just jump right into things. There really isn’t a lot of buildup and some of the story is a little far fetched. In this book I didn’t really ever feel a connection to Garret. He was so upset about his wife/slave dying but then all of the sudden he was all over Inga. It just didn’t make much sense. If you can get over all that then it was an ok book. I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it. I just didn’t feel the connection with Garret or the connection between him and Inga and was hoping for more.Characters: well writtenSex: yesReligious: noWould I recommend to others: yesMore than one book in the series: yesGenre: M/s /RomanceWould I read more by this author: yes~Wicked Reads Review Team~

In many ways, the history of William Randolph Hearst's San Simeon is the history of California: from the Indians who first discovered its spectacular coastal location, to the Spanish missionaries who built their missions there, to the Mexican dons who acquired and worked the land, to goldminer George Hearst and his family, who preserved and expanded the grand coastal ranch. Each of these generations of owners brought horses to San Simeon, to work the land, to race and to ride. In "The Horses of San Simeon," Austine McDonnell Hearst tells a rich tale of the natural beauty, people and, especially, the horses-from workhorses to Thoroughbreds and grand Arabians-that made San Simeon famous.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not as expected By Luvs Books 2015 "Revised" edition: If you can't find a copy of the 1985 first edition of The Horses of San Simeon and have an interest in the Hearst family and their fabulous coastal California estate, this book could be for you. I already have a copy of the 1985 edition, and it's a beautiful thing. When I found out that there was a "revised edition" available, I assumed that it was a true, updated version of the original, bit the bullet and sent in $85 for it. When it arrived, I was surprised to see that it did not look or feel like an $85 book. No dust jacket, no slipcover, just a glossy pictorial cover, and smaller in size than the original version. However, that still would have been acceptable given my expectation of updated content. Sadly, the only new content is a brief, seven page (including one full page and two half page photos) epilogue written by William R. Hearst III. The "revisions" seem to consist mainly of the removal of chapter heading quotations and changes in the sizes of several photographs. There is a caption error in the original edition - the captions beside two of the three registration certificates reproduced in the Morgan Horse chapter have been reversed. Strangely, that mistake wasn't rectified in the revised version. If you can get past the fact that this book is overpriced for what is basically a reprint of an earlier work, and/or have an interest in a wonderful rags to riches tale, then don't let me discourage you. The lovely Sam Savitt illustrations are a bonus.
