Sixteenth-century Tudor England. A time of intrigue and chaos, with a country ruled by a cruel and determined monarch. In Henry VIII’s court a rise to favour can easily be followed by a fatal fall from grace. Four Seymour children of Wolff Hall stand upon Merlin’s Mound, said to be able to grant wishes, and make ambitious claims for their futures. Edward, the eldest, wishes to own all the land he surveys. Thomas, rakish and carefree, wishes to marry the highest woman in the land. Elizabeth, their half-gypsy cousin, cunningly wishes for the wisdom of Merlin. And lastly Jane, their plain but romantic sister, wishes that she will one day marry a king. The four Seymour lives will be inextricably bound with the reign of the ruthless King Henry VIII and his sometimes equally perilous passions and hatreds. Each of them will find their childish wish granted – but at what price? All will be at the mercy of the King’s bloody reign and victims of their own ambitions as they strive to further the Seymour cause and believe that happiness can be found in power… ‘Pour the Dark Wine’ is a thrilling and superbly written historical novel charting the perilous climb of the Seymours in Henry VIII’s court. ‘A cracking good plot’ – The Times Deryn Lake started to write stories at the age of five then graduated to novels but destroyed all her early work because, she says, it was hopeless. A chance meeting with one of the Getty family took her to Sutton Place and her first serious novel was born. Deryn was married to a journalist and writer, the late L. F. Lampitt, has two grown-up children and lives in Mayfield, Sussex, with two large cats. She is also the author of ‘Sutton Place’, ‘To Sleep No More’, ‘The King’s Women’ and ‘As Shadows Haunting’. Endeavour Press is the UK’s leading independent publisher of digital books.

The story was told from the viewpoint of the Seymour family, beginning primarily with Jane and then moving on to the rest of the family after her death. The story was tied together by the character of an illegitimate cousin who is half gypsy and can foretell the future. In the past I have avoided stories about Jane as I always found her to be boring and washed out when compared to the personalities of Henry's other wives. In this book, however, she is portrayed as a surprisingly passionate woman who knows she is plain but develops other qualities to make herself more interesting. I liked her quite a bit! Having read most of the historical fiction out there about the Tudors, it was refreshing to read this version of events.

Dear Tudor history enthusiasts, By Just a friend Pour yourself a nice cup of tea, curl up in a favorite chair and enjoy this excellent historical novel. Wonderfully written, it seamlessly weaves fictional characters and events with historical ones. It is one of the best of this genre I have read in a long while.

History, magic, and a whole lot of flowers By Amazon Customer The author must love gardens, flowers, the moon and nature because at least half of this book is filler and descriptions of nature and weather abound on nearly every page. If the author isn't describing nature then she's describing people's eyes as cornflowers and things like that. It made the book much, much longer than it needed to be. Also it was kind of jarring that with no warning the author will skip months or years from one paragraph to the next. If you can ignore all that, it's a pretty decent book. I liked the creativity of adding magic to the story and the addition of the interesting characters of cloverella and dr. Zachary. I liked that the author gave jane Seymour some interesting characteristics, because most usually don't. I didn't really like the deformity given to Elizabeth and I think that if she had no womanly parts it would have been noticed when she was born or at an early age. I probably would not recommend this to someone who knows nothing about Tudor history, just because if the confusion of the timeline issues and all of the nature descriptions but it's worth a read if you know your history and are looking for something a little different and creative.

A philanderer, his young wife and the current object of his affections; an artist who has lost faith in himself and his wife who despises him; indolent lady and a delightful old couple venture into the forest that appears outside the windows and find dreams and desires answered. Dear Brutus - A Comedy in Three Acts (Acting Edition), by J. M. Barrie

About the Author J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. In 1885, he moved to London as a freelance writer and successfully sold the Auld Licht Idylls, a volume based on his mother's tales. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. In Our Stars By Lee Armstrong J.M. Barrie's play opened on Broadway at the Empire Theatre in December 1918. It ran for 184 performances through June 1919 with Helen Hayes in the role of Margaret. It is an ensemble piece with all of the characters contributing equally to the show and various plot lines. The play falls somewhere between a comedy of manners and a spooky tale. The play's title is a direct quote from Shakespeare's "Julius Ceasar." Barrie appears to also borrow from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" the idea of an enchanted wood where mysterious things can happen. In "Dear Brutus" we encounter a strange little man who is the host. Lob is perhaps misshapen who behaves in a childish manner. He has invited several couples for "Midsummer Eve." The event is purported to have a legend where a mysterious wood suddenly appears and then disappears the next day, often taking those trapped in the wood with it, never to be seen again. Not only that, but the wood appears in different locations, tonight at the back of the garden just outside the house. Lob's butler is Matey, who is not the most honest of fellows. There are several nice scenes in the first act. One is with Mr. Dearth and his wife Alice. There is tension between the couple. She, in modern terms, is a high society party girl. The absence of children seems to be Mr. Dearth's great regret. Mr. and Mrs. Coade are an older couple for whom the romance has escaped, leaving a marriage that is more of a social construct than a fulfilling relationship. Mr. Purdie comes with his wife Mabel. However, Purdie is a womanizer who appears to be having an affair with Joanna Trout. Lady Caroline Laney has high society breeding that makes her pronounce her "r's" as if they were "w's," which apparently is the fashion rather than a speech impediment. Despite dire warnings from the butler Matey, all except Mrs. Coade are drawn into the wood, including Matey who Lob pushes. The second act takes place in the wood where each's memory seems to be suspended. They now are able to have taken advantage of second chances. Mr. Dearth now has a daughter Margaret whose mother died many years ago. Alice arrives as a penniless waif begging food from the couple. Purdie and Joanna are together. High society Lady Caroline transforms into Caroliny, the wife of Matey, now a finance tycoon rather than a butler. The third act brings us back in the house. Barrie leaves Lob asleep on a chair, having all sorts of interesting expressions, leaving the impression that he is dreaming all that is happening in the wood. By ones and twos they return. Each is totally unfamiliar with the room they just left in the first act and are attached to the relationships they developed in the wood. However, something seems to hit their head which begins to restore their memory and slowly the events of act two begin to fade. Perhaps the most touching is when Coade returns not knowing his wife Mabel. He has been a bachelor who has imagined her as his ideal woman. The romance between the older couple seems to rekindle. Lady Caroline is brought low when she realizes she thought she was the wife of a lowly butler. The relationships of the other couples also heals or continues. Lob disappears."Dear Brutus" was an interesting, imaginative play. It combines elements of the supernatural and spins around Cassius' line, "The fault, Dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves that we are underlings." I think this show could well be revived 90 years later. It is an interesting provocative play. Enjoy!

Modernized version of Shakespeare's Midsummer By Cameron Bartlett Though Midsummer is classified as a Comedy, it more aptly shares the characteristics of Shakespeare's Romances. From Wikipedia here is the common description of a Shakespeare Romance:"A redemptive plotline with a happy ending involving the re-uniting of long-separated family members;Magic and other fantastical elements; The presence of pre-Christian, masque-like figures, like Jupiter in Cymbeline" and in this case characters from Greek legend.Another important quality is that the setting of the play is not set in the real world, but in the realm of the imagination, FAIRYLAND.I believe that Barrie was trying to not make comedy or tragicomedy, but was in fact trying to recreate the genre of a Shakespearian Romance and was trying apply that genre to Modern theater. If that is indeed the case, then "Dear Brutus" can be seen as a modernized retelling/adaption of Shakespeare's Midsummer. This is exactly the interpration of the production a few years back at the Nottingham Play House where the play house produced both shows in the same night. Not only that, but the same company used the same actors for both productions.Among the cast wereGareth Thomas: Theseus of Athens, King Oberon, and Mr Dearth from Dear Brutus.Sandra Duncan : Hippolyta, Titania, and Alice Dearth.Martin Herdman: Buttom, Matie the butler.Veronica Leer: Puck, Dearth's daughter MargaretJustine Mitchell: Hellena, JoannaSarah Hadland: Hermia, Lady CarolineWhen one looks at the roles associated with characters from both Midsummer and Brutus, one begins to see that perhaps this was Barrie's original intention all along.First off there is the obvious crossover with Barrie making his character Lob in fact Puck from Midsummer. In both stories it is Puck's actions, or mis-actions, that create the plot that characters are thrown into. There is the similarities of the characters of Mr. Dearth and Alice Dearth with Oberon and Titania. In both marriages there exist a fight. Both fights involve a child of sorts. Alice (also name of the main character in Barrie's Alice sit by the Fire) is the representation of the modernized woman and socialite. Mr. Dearth is the picture of the failing artist who's one regret is that he has never had a child. Both stories involve mix ups and mismatches between lovers. This is seen in Purdie, Joanna, and Mabel. In the second Act Mr. Coade paints Mrs. Coade as the ideal and perfect love and woman. Similar to how Hippolyata would be viewed as the perfect woman by Theseus. Also in Shakespeare's story the two oldest characters, in antiquity terms, would be the characters of Theseus and Hip. Is it conciedense then that the Coade's are the oldest couple in the play?Last there is character of Bottom and Mattie. Bottom in Shakespeare's play would be classified as the low character and the fool. Mattie is butler in the play and is socially the lowest member of class in the cast of characters. There is also a lot of attention paid to him just like there is in the character of Bottom. Mattie can be seen as the fool in the story by the remarks that he has made that if he were born in higher class he would not be a theif. Bottom in Shakespeare goes through two transformations, he get's turned into an "Ass" in the woods and then he transforms, with makeup, into the character of Pyramus. The whole point of Mattie's transformation from low class to high class is that no matter which class he is born under he still is who is, and is a "fool" in thinking otherwise.I think it is important to read the work by Barrie in this light. And hopefully the play can be revived as more awareness is made between it's connection with Shakespeare's work. Comparing the two plays together and the themes inside of the plays would make a perfect class assignment.

Barrie, the author of the wonderful Peter Pan stories, wrote this play in 1917, and it clearly shows a much freer tone than those plays that I have read that were written during the previous Victorian era. In this play, a group of people, strangers for the most part, are invited to an unusual midsummer stay. Each person present has a secret regret, a path that they wished that they had taken. When, on Midsummer’s Eve, a magical forest appears, each enters and get a chance to see the people they might have been had they taken that other path. This “tragicomedy” is quite a wonderful story. I first picked it up with some trepidation, as some plays are rather too bare boned. However, Mr. Barrie included many notes and sidebars that make this play read just as easily as any prose story. It has quite an interesting lesson, and yet is very entertaining. I hope that I am able to find this play being performed somewhere, as I certainly enjoyed reading it. I think that you will enjoy reading it, too.

When three colleagues die violently during a single wartime election day in Central America, two female journalists, best friends, are hurled into a torrent of change in their personal and professional lives and in their relationship with each other. The author, bedeviled by stress and feelings of abandonment, hangs on by her fingernails to reporting while her dear friend "just can't take another picture of a dead body" and throws herself into teaching photography to children who live in a garbage dump. Big questions quietly roil their lives - what is our responsibility to history? To individuals? - until, unexpectedly, they approach an answer together when a child from the dump goes missing.

By Feeding My Addiction Book Reviews You know you have a great story in your hands when the fact that it is completely out of your normal genre of reads doesn't matter!Ricochet, by Mary Jo McConahay, is powerfully written! A story of two war journalists whose friendship is tested when one decides to quit because she, "just can't take another picture of a dead body.""I left because I wanted to do something that would make a difference, even in one or two lives, when it didn't seem I was making any difference by taking pictures."Seeing war and it's effects from a woman's perspective was a new experience for me. We usually hear about war from a males point of view. This was poignant and gripping."Journalism is not a job but a blood type, fate and identification...I'm glad I took a chance with this. The question posed in the blurb is still weighing on me."What is our responsibility to history? To individuals?"**This book was graciously given to me my Shebooks publishing via Netgalley**

A moving story about Latin America in the 80s By Prufrock Mary Jo McConahay is a legendary war correspondent who covered the Latin American insurgencies of the 1980s. This is a deeply moving story of her friendship with another journalist, a photographer, and their physical and emotional encounters with the horrors of these wars. The story of two women will exceptional courage facing the heartbreaking reality of these tragic wars.

By Keith Skinner "The plane banked over the surf, came in low over khaki sand, and hit the runway with a single bump, rolling to a stop under the familiar welcome sign..."With that opening line, Mary Jo McConahay drops us into 1989 El Salvador and, in a tense, urgent narrative, propels us through the war ravaged streets of a Central America in utter turmoil. Many dramas and many themes unfold throughout the story. There's the two American women journalists, one working in words, the other in film, mired in the external war while fighting a war of their own for respect and validation. There are the innocent victims, the common people whose impoverished lives are made even more insufferable by the ongoing horrors of warring factions that have no concern for residual casualties. Corruption, yes, and political intrigue, but told from the human perspective, that of the people suffering or the observers of those who have suffered.McConahay does an excellent job conveying the journalist perspective. We're there with her in the field. We understand the pressure to get the story and somehow put human emotion on a back burner because the emotion must find it's proper target in the reader. She tells us of the stories that must remain untold because her male colleagues just don't get it:"Our colleagues, mostly men, seemed to be less interested in what happened to women and children caught in the landscape we covered. I remember exceptions , but that was the rule."Then she gives us one of her own passages to illustrate her point:"In a mountain town occupied by child soldiers, a girl of 14 wearing oversized fatigues held an AK-47 semiautomatic rifle, looking scared and defiant at once. Nancy’s angle caught the fragile white flower the girl wore in long, dark hair.""Scared and defiant at once." The objective journalist must tell the story in the heart as well as the story in the street. With all the admiration I have for this brave story, I frequently felt rushed and wished McConahay would spend a little more ink on transitions and reflections. She handled the latter very well when she permitted herself time:"One of the babies whimpered inside its white swaddling, and the woman caressed it back into calm with the side of her chin. I could imagine them, four female souls huddling on a single hard bus seat for hours that morning, bumping their way to the capital. And only two on the return."Perhaps with some distance and time to consider approach, this terse novella could be reissued as a book length memoir. We quickly come to care about Mary Jo and her photog friend Nancy. Even the most callus reader could tolerate a more prolonged view into the women's relationship. This book perfectly captures the conundrum of Central America: the bravado, the hope, the tragedy, and the cynicism. There is something—probably that something that keeps the country's people putting one foot in front of the other—that offers a glimmer of hope for the future. It's that dying spark that says to us, "Perhaps if we endure a little longer, make a few more sacrifices, perhaps tomorrow we will prevail."
