By Nicole Laverdure I have read and loved my Fair Duchess, the first story in Julie Johnstone's series A Once Upon a Rogue. Again, she has written this charming and passionate love story titled My Seductive Innocent. I really loved this novel set in 1820 London, England. I loved her two main characters Nathaniel Ellison, the Duke of Scarsdale and Miss Sophia Vane. We meet again, Amelia and Colin, from her first novel. Nathan is a tormented soul afraid of loving, partly because of his past relationship with his mother. He also needs to find a wife, but cannot trust women because of his torturous past. He suffered terrible mood swings and became unpredictable. Enters Sophia, a bold, independent and strong willed young lady, who is living a life of poverty with her young brother Harry. Having saved Nathan from a certain death, he now offers her his protection and marriage to her. But, since, he cannot love or take the chance of loving, their relationship will be very complex. Lots of ups and downs! Until, sparks flare again and ignite a rich passion between these two beautiful souls! This story is about betrayal, trust, jealousy and passion.I loved it so much that I could not put it down, the intrigue kept me turning pages. I love stories with tormented characters, their stories are usually filled with strong and rich emotions. Some scenes were passionate and humorous such as when Sophia called Nathan “ a pompous peacock”. I recommend My Seductive Innocent to all Regency lovers!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. An Interesting Read By Melody May All right, My Seductive Innocent by Julie Johnstone is a bit rough. It's a good story, but not an easy read. I guess I needed time to digest the information. So, let's talk about the book, because the blurb is a bit vague in a sense.First off, Sophia isn't a hoyden. When I think of hoyden I think someone who doesn't give a wit about society, marches to beat of her own drum, and carefree. Sophia is definitely not carefree, she actually cares a lot of responsibility. She's trying to protect her brother at all cost, by making sacrifices to ensure he stays safe. However, Sophia is pretty smart, independent, and loving. I would also say that she's a bit of spitfire. She's passionate on the people she loves.Then we have Nathaniel who is staid. He has this whole life planned out with finding the perfect societal wife who won't give him grief if he has a mistress. Basically, he wants a wife that will be seen, but not heard. However, that is thrown out the window when he encounters Sophia and is kind of force to marry.So, there marriage is a bit rocky from the start. Nathaniel has this idea of having stepford wife, while Sophia dreams of being love. Oh yeah, she has this dream of finding true love, but it's kind of hard when your married to a duke who has no desire to love his wife. Anyway, she tries to teach him that it's important to have love in a relationship. About the time she starts to open his heart all hell breaks loose. I have to say things start to get a bit crazy. I can't really say what the hell happens, because that would be a spoiler. I guess the best way to sum it up would be never every family believes that blood is thicker than water.Okay, My Seductive Innocent was an interesting read. It's pretty dark. A lot has to deal with Nathaniel childhood and what happens to him later in the story. Sophia is kind of this ray of sunshine, but slowly diminishes as the story progresses and you start to wonder is this going to end well. Fortunately, there is a happy ending, but it takes a lot of work to get there. It's a good story, but you have wade through a lot of rough emotional stuff to get to a happy ending. Heart Pounding Breath Taking Read By Dee Foster Believing in the hope her deceased mother's letter gives her, Sophia Vane works for her abusive father but has been stashing money away so that she & her half-brother can escape & make a better life for themselves.With a mother that was verbally abusive & denied any love, it's no wonder that Nathaniel Ellison, the Duke of Scarsdale, has hardened his heart. The only affection he lets come to light is for his lame cousin, who he feels responsible for because he feels he caused his lameness.Nathaniel wonders into the tavern where Sophia works & comes to her rescue when she's being accosted by her father's right hand man. When he asks for directions, Sophia offers to show him the way; however, they are held up before they reach their destination. When Nathaniel is injured Sophia takes him back to her father's tavern where he tries to use the situation to his advantage.Wanting nothing to do with her father's plans, Sophia realizes she & her brother must leave immediately whether they have the money or not. On his way leaving the town, Nathaniel again runs into Sophia & admires the way she is handling the person who her father sold her brother to. Realizing that the only way to repay Sophia & repair her reputation is to marry her.Through a series of misunderstandings, a vicious aunt, a vindictive ex-mistress and attempts on his life can Nathaniel soften his heart to love Sophia. Will Sophia's love withstand all that happens?Absolutely LOVED this story! Julie Johnstone outdid herself with this one. Expect the unexpected - not everyone is who they seem & situations aren't always what they seem!!! Definitely a heart pounding, breath stealing read!!!

Superb Documentary By A Customer Perhaps I am a bit prejudice since I am also one of the contributors to the book.Before retiring from Civil Service (Navy) I was the configuration manager for the reactivations of the four Battleships. I was familiar with the author's previous works and was very impressed with his attention to the personal stories of the ships. After retirement, I was then free to provide the author any and all personal knowledge of the ship's reactivation period at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Paul selected the best memories I documented and included them superbly into the book. The author does not go into the technical aspects as to how a Battleship is built, leaving that up to other authors more inclined to include how many rivets were driven, etc. Though I wish he had the space to include the TRUE story of the origin of the cracked armor panel in the turret of barbette III. No, it was NOT caused by the grounding in Hampton Roads but was a heat treating surface fracture that occured during manufacture. But technical manuals are not the author's style and I am glad they are not. After all, a ship is really the culmination of dedicated and skilled human beings who built her and the ship's success is the dedication and bravery of the men who sailed her. Paul Stillwell brings this human interest across very well. And, I'm sorry, but I did not buy the book. I was sent an autographed copy by the author which I will treasure forever. Richard A. Outstanding accuracy of dates & places By hscharf@webtv.net (Harold Scharf) I was part of the original crew aboard the Missouri from Commissioning Day, June 11, 1944 until March, 1946 as a Radioman in the CR Division. Paul Stillwell did an outstanding job of giving an accurate account of dates and places involving the USS Missouri from the first bolt installed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard until the present time. I use this book quite often to refresh my memory of the exact dates of various things that happened while I was aboard. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing an accurate history of the USS Missouri = BB63.

It gives the reader a thoroughly enjoyable view of what it was like to serve on this famous warship.Part of the Iowa Class Battleships (four built, New Jersey, Missiour, Iowa and Wisconson) these Battleships are considered by many naval experts to be the perfect blend of speed, firepower and protection. Only the Japanese Yamoto and Musashi were bigger. When these ships were designed, no one knew that the day of the battleship was over, naval air power and aircraft carriers reigned supreme in the contest of the Pacific. There were never any Battleship battles as imagined.This book by Paul Stillwell is much more than nuts and bolts of the Missouri. It gives the stories behind the steel, the men who crewed the ship, providing a rare glimpse of what it was like to be a sailor aboard a mighty ship from June 1944 at her commisioning to her service in the Korean War, the Vietnam war and finally, the 1991 Gulf War.The photograpsh are excellent, showing interior as well as exterior shots. There are line diagrams to show the ship and what makes it tick. This is a pricey book, but well worth the cost for anyone interested in naval affairs, naval history and a fitting tribute not just to the ship, but the men who served. Higly recommended.

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Skinner One thing this prescient book achieves--and possibly the reason Chesterton wrote it--is to show just how varied such types can be. Our own time, (and he must have foreseen it) for all it's electronic wizardry and lightening communication, is devoid of much true diversity of personality, talent and perspective. The infantile nature of modern political debate is a perfect example. Really, there is no debate at all, just cartoonish demonizing of one's opponent. Nor is there any particular yearning for fundamental truth. Say what you will about the likes of Stevenson, Tolstoy or Savonarola (my favorite) they were originals and, in the case of the latter, prepared to die for their beliefs. Today, our crusaders are merely looking for face time which will allow them to angle their way into a lucrative career. They speak boldly and then retire to Georgetown watering holes to clang glasses with "members from across the aisle." Or they yup it up at parties attended by other "names" regardless of what those names profess. "It's all good" is their motto. But Chesterton manages to draw some quick sketches of personalities with real flavor and who said it's not at all good and it ought to be better--personalities who, in today's world, would probably be exiled to oblivion for reasons of mouth feel. He was able to do this because Western society hadn't become completely therapeutic and (which is to say roughly the same thing) chickafied. I'll take Sir Walter Scott over Camille Paglia, any day!

I did not know this collection of poems would one day become a book. As the poems came to life from the dust of an adulteress affair, a battle ensued within me. For 30 years, after the demise of that relationship, I became a raging alcoholic and drug addict. I had three failed marriages, I lost my family, most of my friends, my business and my license to practice medicine. I got busted and my dirty little secrets were revealed. Suddenly, I was naked before all who knew me. Then we reconnected. My soulmate and I were one again. A steamy adulteress affair had begun. The inner turmoil that resulted from this war between the spirit and the flesh made my drug addiction and all of my losses seem like a walk in the park. As you read these poems, you will see the conflict that raged within me. I refused to let these writings die. They are, and will always be, a reminder of the adversities which ultimately convicted me. I pray that one day, the scandal of my repentance will be greater than the scandal of my sins.
