Many Latino and Chinese women who immigrated to New York City over the past several decades found work in the garment industry-an industry well known for both hiring immigrants and its harsh working conditions. In the 1990s, the garment industry was one of the largest immigrant employers in New York City and workers in Chinese- and Korean-owned factories produced 70 percent of all manufactured clothing in New York City. Based on extensive interviews with workers and employers, Margaret M. Chin offers a detailed and complex portrait of the work lives of Chinese and Latino garment workers. Chin, whose mother and aunts worked in Chinatown's garment industry, also explores how immigration status, family circumstances, ethnic relations, and gender affect the garment industry workplace. In turn, she analyzes how these factors affect whom employers hire and what wages and benefits are given to the employees.

Chin's study contrasts the working conditions and hiring practices of Korean- and Chinese-owned factories. Her comparison of the two practices illuminates how ethnic ties both improve and hinder opportunities for immigrants. While both sectors take advantage of workers and are characterized by low wages and lax enforcement of safety regulations-there are crucial differences. In the Chinese sector, owners encourage employees, almost entirely female, to recruit new workers, especially friends and family. Though Chinese workers tend to be documented and unionized, this work arrangement allows owners to maintain a more paternalistic relationship with their employees. Gender also plays a major role in channeling women into the garment industry, as Chinese immigrants, particularly those with children, tend to maintain traditional gender roles in the workplace. Korean-owned shops, however, hire mostly undocumented Mexican and Ecuadorian workers, both male and female. These workers tend not to have children and are thus less tied to traditional gender roles. Unlike their Chinese counterparts, Korean employers hire workers on their own terms and would rather not allow current employees to influence their decisions.

Chin's work also provides an overview of the history of the garment industry, examines immigration strategies, and concludes with a discussion of changes in the industry in the aftermath of 9/11.

Sewing Women: Immigrants and the New York City Garment Industry (Columbia Comparative Studies on Ethnicity and Race), by Margaret M. Chin

Review

Chin has painted an imaginative and compelling portrait of contemporary immigrant workers.

(Robert E. Bionaz H-Net)

Sewing Women provides a new and illuminating perspective on New York's garment industry and the dynamics of work among today's immigrants through a carefully argued and insightful comparison of Chinese- and Korean-owned garment shops and their Chinese and Hispanic workers. This richly-textured account, based on in-depth qualitative research, makes fascinating reading and will be of great interest to scholars and students of contemporary immigration, ethnicity, work, and gender.

(Nancy Foner, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Hunter College of the City University of New York, author of From Ellis Island to JFK: New York's Two Great Waves of Immigration)

Sewing Women is an insightful and sensitively written ethnographic study of New York's immigrant garment industry. Chin reports on the virtues and vices of coethnicity and the enclave economy. Her broad-based study delves into the urban low-wage economy, globalization, New York's fashion industry and sweatshop labor as it impinges on owners and workers―and into immigration, race and ethnicity, gender and family life, as well as the effects of 9/11. Chin's book is ethnographic sociology at its richest and best."

(Herbert J. Gans, Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology, Columbia University, author of Democracy and the News)

Despite global competition, New York City's garment industry struggles on, largely on the backs of the poor immigrant women. In her incisive portrait of today's garment workers, Margaret Chin explores how the different ways in which labor is organized in the Latina and Chinese segments of the industry shapes their lives as workers, as members of ethnic communities and as women. Sewing Women is an important window on to the changing lives of the working poor in today's global economy.

(Philip Kasinitz, professor of sociology, City University of New York Graduate Center, coeditor of Becoming New Yorkers: Ethnographies of the New Second Generation)

Chin's strong writing allows her reader to see and feel the garment worker's exhausting struggles on a daily basis.

(Linda Kozlowski Altar Magazine)

In the midst of the information age, only steps from Wall Street, Margaret Chin delves into one of the largest manufacturing industries remaining in the big city: the garment business. Where Jews and Italians once crowded the shop floor, she finds today's immigrant workers―Chinese, Mexicans, and Ecuadorians―hunched over high speed sewing machines. How do these workers find their way into the 'rag trade?' Why do Chinese women labor for co-ethnic bosses, while Mexicans and Ecuadorians sew for Korean owners? How does the labor process reflect these differential patterns of recruitment, skill and pay? Chin offers a nuanced portrait of the manufacturing world that blends the study of gender and family roles with the structure of this globalized industry and its international workforce. It is a terrific read for anyone interested in immigration, the sociology of work, and the intersection between family life and the organization of the shop floor.

(Katherine Newman, professor of sociology and public affairs, Princeton University, author of No Shame in My Game: The Working Poor in the Inner City)

[Sewing Women] provides a fresh sociological account of ethnic entrepreneurs and workers in this resilient immigrant industry of the 1990s.

(Min Zhou Sociological Forum)

[Chin's] masterful threading of oral interviews into the analysis brings the history to life.

(Annie Polland, senior vice president of programs and education, Lower East Side Tenement Museum)

A very good thing. And Ava did not disappoint. I always want more Jacob and this time we get his pov. This is after Cole took Leila. So we get to see and feel his anger and rage.He wants to get even with his dearest brother. We see Leila struggling to move on. But its very difficult. She just wants it to end.Jacob wants to help her.So when he finds out where Cole is hiding out its his chance to end it all. and a chance to redeem himself in Leilas eyes and his own. He feels he let her down. But what if the risk is worth more than the reward? What if he loses the only important thing in his life, while trying to make his brother pay?You will have to read to find out.It was AMAZING and I cannot wait for part 2!!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I am so excited for this series!! By Amanda This was a great start for this series…it left me wanting…no…needing to read the rest, and I was hoping for an extension to Jacob and Leila’s story…it felt unfinished at the end of The Billionaires Wife series so I was ecstatic to get this in my email. I’m not sure how I feel about Jacob’s decisions thus far but I am hoping he doesn’t do something that not only he but Leila will regret later. These two are in need of a drama free HEA, with babies…I need that for these two.GAH that cliffhanger though!!! I need part 2 ASAP…I need to know what happens next. Reading this from Jacob’s POV is so much more intense…he is a very intense character. I can’t wait to see where this series leads. But again I am praying Jacob doesn’t do something that breaks him even more than he already is.I received an advanced copy for an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved it!!!!! By Christina S1027 I loved this! I was so excited when this next series was set to come out. I was left slightly unfulfilled at the end of the billionaire's wife series, so this was welcomed. And I've said this in my reviews of Ava's work before, her cliffhangers! I love them! Never have I said I love a cliffhanger from any other author- I usually hate them- and this one was HUGE!!!!!I'm so excited for the next installment. I think you should read all of Jacob and Lelia's story, starting w/the His Submissive series, but you really need to have read the billionaire's wife series before starting this one. You won't enjoy it as much if you don't have at least that back story.*I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book contains two novellas of approximately 20,000 words each. Part One and Part Two of the Forbidden Fruit Series A thrilling romantic suspense story; steamy, with great characters and a twist you'll never guess. When young ambitious FBI agent Nikki Archer gets her first big break - a chance to hunt down the notorious New York gangsters, Eduardo and Carlos Pesci - she expects danger. What she doesn't expect is to meet the most beautiful man she’s ever seen, billionaire sculptor Jon Selleck. After a night of incredible sex with Jon, Nikki’s dream turns into a nightmare, when she discovers that Jon has a dark secret. He is intimately involved with the New York criminal underworld and her case. Despite her best efforts Nikki is drawn into Jon’s dark world. But if she wants to catch Eduardo and Carlos Pesci, she will have to decide between her passion for Jon and her career. But Nikki also has a secret. Since childhood she’s had an alter-ego, another personality that takes over her body. The doctors call it multiple personality disorder. All Nikki knows is that every so often she blacks out and wakes up days later, with hazy memories of rampant sex and all night parties. Her other self it turns out has very different tastes to Nikki. She likes her sex rough. She likes to be dominated and she’s found the perfect man to do it. Excerpt We fell through the door, bodies pressed together, lips locked, mouths open in a frenzy of desire. Still kissing him, I yanked at his shirt, pulling it free from his pants and finding his skin underneath. I ran my shaking fingertips over the ridges of his smooth, hard abs and up to his chest and shuddered. Then I kissed him harder, as if I wanted to consume him, and pressed my hand against his chest, feeling the fast, strong thud of his heart. Mine was racing and jack hammering like it wanted out of my body. I felt hot and cold at the same time. I was shaking so much I could hardly stand. Then I didn’t need to. Still kissing me, Jon picked me up. I lifted my legs up and hooked them around his waist, feeling his biceps bunch as he held me. He leaned forward and whispered, “I want you now.” Get ready for a thrilling, suspense filled, hot and erotic roller-coaster ride of a story. This novella contains adult situations and content. This book end with a cliffhanger.

It's interesting how Nikki/Jes and Jon/Carlos are able to find one another even through all the situation that are thrown at them. Nikkei and her later ego Jes was entertaining. It was intriguing to see just how much of a difference there was between the two. Carlos being a mob boss with his brother, then turn to Jon the sculptor was a bit of a surprise. Who would have thought he would be talented and successful on his own. Through it all, they still do their best to figure out how they can stay together even with the odds stacked against them.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. To Much Sex! By Harley Great story, but much to much graphic sex. It takes away from the story.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Surprise! By klyenser This book, and Part 1, totally surprised me. I got them for free on Freebooksy, and thought, what the heck, why not. Well, I'm in love with this series so far. While it moves a bit too quick for normal life events, it's not so quick that it isn't believable. The author does an awesome job of weaving the characters together while keeping story lines separate enough to make them turn the page interesting. I waver between savoring each line and fighting myself to not jump forward to see what happens. Well done!

On the east bank of the Wabash River, Terre Haute was established as a real estate venture in 1816. Two hundred years of history is chronicled here, one day at a time, with stories of its remarkable events and colorful characters. In 1915, Coca-Cola introduced its iconic green bottle, designed and manufactured locally at Root Glass Company. Giving credit to the towns Sin City moniker, authorities seized the largest moonshine still ever discovered in Vigo County on July 15, 1929. Many notable Hoosiers have called Terre Haute home, too, including labor leader Eugene V. Debs and Tony Hulman of Indianapolis 500 fame. Every date on the calendar reveals a story to fascinate, educate or entertain.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved this story By Amazon Customer I loved this story. I love alpha males and take no s*** type heroines and this story did not disappoint. Eric is so use to having his way that Persephone's stubbornness knocks him for a loop. These two are hot when they are fighting.....when they stop fighting and start.... you know.. the heat elevates to the very next level. The sex scenes in this story jump off the page and happen right before your eyes they're so smoldering. I was so in love with these characters that I was disappointed I read the book so quickly. Pick up this book and see exactly why these two are immortals!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It is part of a series. By piperine4u I found the female lead character annoying and whiney. I had moments when I channeled the gamekeeper in Jurassic Park (Shoot her!). I liked the rest of the series but this one was I could have skipped.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love the Kyriakis Pack By Amazon Customer I thought it was good. I like reading about the characters from this series. I liked Persephone. As the only daughter of an Alpha, you expect her to be headstrong, stubborn, and used to getting her way. If she were any less, would you respect her? With that being said, I felt for her because she, like all of us, hates being told what to do. Eric...how could any one say no? Strong, fair, loves his family and handsome, who doesn't want some of that? These are characters that I like and hope to see again because they are just gettin' started.

Increase is Lia Purpura’s chronicle of her pregnancy, the birth of her son, Joseph, and the first year of his life. She recounts her journey with the heightened awareness of a mother-to-be and through the eyes of a poet, from the moment she confirms her pregnancy as “A blue X slowly crosses itself, first one arm, then the other in the small white window of the test,” through “the X of his crossed feet in sleep” as her child’s world begins. Purpura’s sensibility transcends the facts of personal experience to enfold the dramatically changing shape of a larger, complex world.

These closely knit essays portray the rhythms of a new mother’s life as it is challenged and transformed in nearly every aspect, from the emotions of wildness, loss, need, and desire to the outward progress―and interruption―of her work and activities. Increase offers us motherhood at an extraordinary pitch, recording, absorbing, and revisiting experiences from a multitude of angles. Purpura presents her story of discovery with unequaled eloquence, grace, and power.

Increase (Association of Writers and Writing Programs Award for Creative Nonfiction Ser.), by Lia Purpura

From Publishers Weekly Through the eyes of a poet, Purpura explores the challenges of the first year of motherhood in a series of lyrical essays that begin with a positive pregnancy testA"a blue X slowly crosses itself, first one arm then the other, in the small white window." In the beginning of the book, which won the Associated Writing Programs Award for Creative Nonfiction, she explores her transition into motherhood in detail, like a carefree tourist. "Reading about the place I am becoming has been something like consulting a travel guide," she writes of her pregnancy books. But a few months later, she declares: "These first weeks with him at home recall my first days in other countries where I've livedAthat initial fear of venturing out alone, without a full and fluent language to navigate the way." Her observations grow more concise after her son is born, reflecting the limited time available to work, the limited energy to focus. "What would have come next, here in the spiral of thought, in this space, had Joseph not woken and called me away?" she asks. Throughout, she eloquently captures her emotions and experiences. Of labor, she writes: "How like an apprentice I felt... I thought I might do well if only I could practice." When her son was five months old, she describes gazing at him as "a kind of eating, it is that elementally nourishing." For mothers, bystanders and armchair dreamers, Purpura offers an insightful itinerary. (Sept.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

'Since Joseph was born, this yearning has formed itself, materialized as a desire for a visible, outward sign of attachment' Lia Purpura says in Increase, clearly setting before us the visible, outward signs of the world in which she is made anew by love for a child. This is precise, beautiful writing, made more lovely and urgent by the 'eye of compassion' she praises elsewhere.

(Carol Muske)

After reading Increase, I imagine that Lia Purpura might be interesting about any subject she decides to take on. She turns journal entries about her pregnancy and the first year of her son's life into an evocation of a sensibility, and finally, into literature. I love the way her sentences move, and how they nimbly bear the weight of the complex intelligence behind them.

(Stephen Dunn)

This powerful, crafted book is, at one level, a meditation on pregnancy and birth, on the giving and gathering of time. But at a deeper level it is a true and eloquent addition to the literature of self-knowledge. What makes this book so strong is that throughout its sustained, lyrical meditation we observe not just a child growing towards birth, but a self growing towards self-definition. This is an adventure in style and music that draws the reader in and offers surprises and truths at every turn.

(Eavan Boland)

Increase understands the nature of its own title―the noun and verb of it, the willing participation and the quiescent acceptance. This book chronicles gestation and birth, an indelible record of eighteen months, giving birth itself to beautifully crafted sentences that mirror the shape of thought. Deeply introspective, the interior voice here delves into the experience of nature as well as the nature of experience. Outside, the cyclical seasons manifest themselves in vivd images; inside, the season of birth has its own unfolding rhythm. The result is a fusion of the measured and the lyrical. By turns contemplative, forthright, or questioning, Increase offers not ideology but insight―language in service of individual perception. Time is the subject here, the way we are its unthinking embodiement, the way language allows us to take its measure, eventually to understand. In the end, in yielding to time her child's separate life, this sequence of brief, still moments achieves active wisdom.

(Judith Kitchen)

Awe is one of many things a reader can gain from reading Increase. Here we are in the hands of an original-thinking Madonna, one who sees honeycombs in the playpen mesh and bathwater as a silver scarf. She reminds us that the miracle of birth is real to someone all the time, and that everyone, even the murderous terrorist on the evening news, started out as somebody's baby.

(Fourth Genre)

Through the eyes of a poet, Lia Purpura explores the challenges of the first year of motherhood in a series of lyrical essays. . . . For mothers, bystanders, and armchair dreamers, Purpura offers an insightful itinerary.

By A Customer I have read a great many books on birth and motherhood not because I am a mother, but because I am a midwife. I found this book to be an extraordinary account of motherhood. "Increase" is a graceful description of pregnancy, birth, and the evolution of self-definition. It is a kind of meditation on motherhood: a poem celebrating the joy, pain, and fear associated with self exploration and determination.

When Ginger Manley boarded a train from Innsbruck to Zurich in the summer of 1967, she had no idea of the adventure she was about to embark upon. Beside the railroad track in Feldkirch, Austria, Ginger, a registered nurse on the lam from a year of intensive trauma nursing, met John, an ex-fighter pilot and service-related arm amputee--and immediately disliked him. Two months later they married in what seemed a fairy-tale story but no happily-ever-after occurred for many years hence. Now at almost fifty years into their marriage, Ginger offers a sometimes stark and often humorous look into a marriage of three entities--herself, John, and that damn artificial arm of his. It is a story of inspiration, courage, and love--and of the importance of humor in triumphing over obstacles.

Although, it really should be his "damned artificial armory", since at any given time the author's husband has available several different hands and hooks modified for various functions . In 1967, Ginger Trundle, a slightly burned-out RN, was traveling through Europe on the cheap, trying her best to avoid Americans (particularly American men) when she encountered a spot of difficulty over a botched room reservation, and reluctantly accepted assistance from a young American tour director. He offered to lend her money for a decent hotel room, took her to dinner (at which she first realized one of his hands was prosthetic), and a two-week fling followed. Although she returned to the US, without telling him that she suspected she was pregnant, he contacted her again before long and announced that he couldn't imagine living without her, and after knowing each other for two months, they were married. His family thought he had won the lottery---an RN who could take care of him if his disability eventually required it, and a lovely girl at that; HER family thought she had lost her mind. The service-related accident that cost John Manley his left hand also involved a significant traumatic brain injury and loss of most of his left ear. As a second lieutenant in the Air Force, near the end of the training meant to prepare him for service in Viet Nam, John had somehow walked into the propeller of a single engine plane in which he had been giving a flying lesson. Decades later, when he heard the news story about a fashion model suffering a very similar accident, John got up from his breakfast table, went into his study and composed a letter to that young woman, encouraging her to believe that her life would go on, as his had, and that grace, dignity and even humor need not be lost to her. Much of this book is about the role humor has played in John Manley's life---both he and Ginger have an abundance of it, and as she says it not only has helped him to deal with what he no longer views as a "disability", but it is a great diffuser of tension and awkwardness when meeting "normies" who don't know what to say or where to look when confronted with an amputee. Ginger Manley is a sex therapist associated with the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; due to two knee replacements and bilateral hearing aids (John can only wear one) she now claims to be more "artificial" than her husband, a graduate of Virginia Military Institute who has had many jobs since being forced to abandon the Air Force career he had planned for, among them human resources director, labor negotiator, professional mediator and administrative law judge. John is also an avid golfer, fisherman, general risk-taker, and competitive as hell. In the interest of full disclosure I will point out that he is a distant cousin of mine, although I have not seen him in decades. There are some continuity issues with Disarmed, and overall it is more episodic than cohesive, but it's a satisfying and uplifting read.

Tucker, Author The subtitle “An Exceptional Journey” for Ginger Manley’s, Disarmed, is indeed an accurate description of this remarkable memoir. It is a story of a fifty-year relationship with her husband, John Manley, a relationship with a doubtful beginning. It is an inspiring account of the couple’s fortitude in overcoming horrendous physical trauma, homelessness, and the overwhelming odds of keeping their marriage intact. The divorce rate in couples with a disability is ninety percent. This is the story of how the Manley’s beat those odds. It’s 1965 and the world is John Manley’s oyster. A standout high school athlete, graduate of Virginia Military Institute, an Air Force Second Lieutenant flying jet planes and driving a fancy sports car, John had the best that life could offer before him. But it all changed on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Georgia on September 18, 1965 when he walked into an airplane’s rotating propeller. His injuries were significant and his survival in doubt, but survive he did.Two years later, while touring Europe, Ms. Manley meets her future husband, whom she describes as “an annoying American man.” While John may have lost an arm he apparently never lost his confidence. Within two months of meeting on a train in Switzerland they were married in East Tennessee.Ms. Manley truly establishes that the phrase “love is blind” is not just a cliché, when she writes, “…I had never really noticed the angry red scar running the length of the side of his head, nor the fact that he could only lift the right side of his mouth when he smiled, or that his left eye drooped, nor had I really paid any attention to his not having a full left ear. I did not see any of these distinctive marks until I saw them in our wedding pictures.”As with many young couples reality set in all too soon after a storybook romance. Dreams change and life can become a struggle as we try to find our place in the world, and this was no different, and even more challenging, for the Manley’s. Without sentimentality Ms. Manley tells of the extended hardship of relocation, unemployment, and homelessness. In 1977, ten years after their whirlwind romance and marriage, John Manley earns a Masters in Business Administration degree and steps into a new and successful career path.Making frequent appearances throughout this book, like a faithful dog, is a third character: John’s artificial hand. Or perhaps more accurately, his hands, for there are many. There is the flesh-toned five-fingered myoelectric hand, and two types of the two-pronged metal hook, and then there are the variations of the hook prosthesis for golf, skiing, tennis, for eating lobster and crab legs, for barbecuing and for heavy-duty lifting. One might image that reading about John’s life with these prosthesis would be a grim telling, but it’s not. Ms. Manley skillfully peppers her book with humorous antidotes of the adventures of Ginger, John, and The Hand.In fact the message of the book is that a sense of humor can give you the right attitude to overcome any obstacle. The life’s lessons in Disarmed are of value to anyone, but especially to families of amputees. Today our country is in a war that seems to have no end. Daily our young men are returning with catastrophe injuries. Medical miracles are giving them a form of physical recovery, but they need more. The life the Manley’s have lived is more that surviving, more that enduring; it is a life that thrived on adversity. In spite of terrible trauma, John Manley found marriage to a beautiful and successful woman, maintained his pilot’s license, hunted, fished, skied, played tennis, earned an MBA, and at age 45, graduated from law school.Disarmed is an inspiring story of courage, victory, success, and love.

Collett Manley tackles, once again, a topic most avoid as she writes about her husband John's artificial arm. She covers all aspects of artificial limbs. For example, I had no idea there are people with fetishes around artificial limbs!. She covers it all and it's fascinating. I appreciated her candid notes of their personal life as they navigate all aspects of married life with the arm. We feel John's frustration as he tries newly designed arms, as the arm, unexpectedly, crushes the wine glass. We laugh when the best laid plans fall apart and the two of them dissolve in laughter. John's sense of humor, his pranks on unsuspecting folks add levity to a situation that would overwhelm most people. Manley clearly paints a picture of her husband as a man determined to use this disability to his advantage rather than allowing it to conquer. We ride along as she and John face frustrating technical design problems with the arm and we witness her husband's wonderful determination to rise above pity. A book anyone would enjoy, but I suspect anyone dealing with a disability would profit from reading. These two are experts!
