About the Author I am an emotional intelligence life coach who is also a spiritual formation pastor at a bible-based community church. I have been married for 29 years to the wife of my youth. We have no children. Last year I completed by Doctor of Ministry and I now want to venture outside of the church to deliver life coaching and emotional intelligence education. I immensely enjoy physical activity - mostly mountain biking. I am branching out of that discipline a bit by completing a cross country mountain bike triathalon in a few weeks.

He introduced and explained many topics in a concise and understandable way. I will work toward recognizing emotional habits with the goal of turning them into emotional alerts. I really appreciate that the author helps us with tools to gain power over how we react to our emotions. His personal story is fascinating and tragic, he is brave to share such details. I would appreciate more "case studies" from a wider variety of subjects, although I am sure privacy issues makes them difficult to obtain. It is a relatively quick read and does not require much additional work from the reader. I would recommend it to people who want to have better relationships by understanding their emotions.

Dr. Carlyle writes in such a way that the reader can understand, relate and enjoy the book. I have learned several new techniques for identifying my emotions. Before reading this book I struggled with staying in the moment. I used to allow events of my past to cloud my judgement and reactions to current situations. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has ever acted in a way they later looked back on and thought "I didn't handle that so well!"Thank you Dr. Carlyle!!!

By brian barrett This book is a digestible user's manual to a complex and often overlooked, but important topic. The author does a good job of weaving science, research and personal experience to make emotional intelligence an approachable and memorable avenue for real, positive change in your life. Read some, or all of the book - there are great takeaways throughout.

I felt gripped with the story from the first page to the last. The writing was superb and didn't miss a beat. We now have Roady's story and the new love of his life in Sally. If you have read the Mail Order Brides books, you will remember Heather and her large family; Sally is one of her sisters. I love the way the author rounded up all the "cast members" of the Series and we all got acquainted once again. Roady is one of the cowhands that has been with the McCutcheons for years and years. Through a stage accident, snow storm, a hunting cabin for refuge, a dear friendship and respect is born between Roady and Sally. Unknown to anyone, she is in the family way and not out of love. She no longer has her work and feels alone. This is a story I will long remember and read more than this one time. My congratulations on a wonderful book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The return of the McCutcheon family and Roady's story was all and more that I wanted! By Anna I have been waiting for Roady's story and I was not disappointed. Caroline once again she has created a story that completely draws you in from the first words. You can truly feel what the characters are going through. All the heartache, and hopefulness. The fear and love shared. And getting to return and see old favorites is just one more thing to love about this book.Roady has been with the McCutcheon family for years. As a trusted ranch hand and considered part of the family, he never turns away from someone in need. When stranded with Sally in a mountain cabin through a snowstorm, she captures his affections and he can't seem to get her off his mind.Sally has left all she knows behind in St. Louis. Carrying a secret that could destroy her family, she heads west. When she is stranded and a strange man finds her, she is scared to death. But as she comes to know Roady, she feels he is the only one she can trust with her secret.Through this story of their journey together, Roady and Sally must overcome seemingly giant obstacles and misunderstandings to find their way to each other. Can this marriage of convenience become all that they want it to be? Roady loves her but doesn't think she will ever forget who he thinks she pines for. Sally loves Roady but doesn't know if she can ever truly be his wife in every way. The way that Roady is so patient with her just makes me love him even more than I already did. Thank you Caroline for giving us Roady's story.

I have always loved Roady and I wanted him to find love and happiness from the first time he was mentioned in previous books. Sally is perfect for him. I hope that there will be another book with them as the main characters. I guess I want to read about their future. The baby....the new house and Hickory. For some reason I feel that he might be a big part of Roady and Sally's lives. Another 5 star book for Caroline !!!!!

35 of 36 people found the following review helpful. Observe from all angles for the truth. By Dale C. Miles Dale C. Miles, San Carlos tribal historianAs an Apache I would like to say that I read the review about James Kaywaykla's SELECTIVE ASPECTS on Apache history and culture and was more amused than anything else. Since I've had to deal with non-tribal people for most of my life (I was born on the San Carlos tribal area and have lived in Arizona all my life)I have found that correcting white folks' misconceptions about us Apaches has been nearly a full time job (Example: Do you people pay taxes? I just say: "I wish I didn't have to.") still as an historin I have to be objective and I realize that Apaches in war could be pretty rough. Still, knowing that I still have to deal with prejuidice in nearby towns tells that in the ole' West things were even worse. The point is this, Eve Ball wrote reason for writing the is fine book on Victorio's people was for non-tribal people to see the Apaches as human beings and in this she succeeded very well. An objective reader will see Kaywaykla and his people as such. For instance, you will find that many did not want to live a life of constant warfare and refused to go out with Geronimo in the spring of 1885--they were sent to prison in Florida anyway just because they were Chiricahua and the army couldn't catch the hostile ones. Also in the passage where where his beloved step father is sent to prison one can see the pain, hurt and loss that a child can feel at such an incident. The book shows how important family was (and still is) to the Apaches. In this book Juh (pronounced Whoa), Loco and Geronimo come alive and we see the lengendary Apache woman warrior lozen, is profiled as well. I give this book five stars because as an Apache I understand where the narrantor is coming from; any open minded person would as well. I don't buy the noble red man myth either. We Apaches were people like any one else and "In the Days of Victorio" reveals this and that is the essence and value of this fine narrative. The book was never meant to be structured, formal history but a telling of history from the Apache point of view. Kawaykla also reveals how he witnessed captives dying violent deaths and its affect on him. As for Cremony, I know his book and enjoyed it very much but his view of Apaches is very biased but still he relates some various truths in it. Also, many historians (including Ed Sweeny who I know)have stated that Cremony had a tendency to draw the 'long bow' a bit in his book. Still, I believe that nearly all books from persons who were observers of that time have some value and historians and discerning people need to know how to combine all sources to get a clear view of the Southwest's history.Even General George Crook (who fought and respected Apaches) once wrote that Apaches were painted in darker colors than they were due to misunderstanding and exaggeration. I do hope that the reviewer will read my upcoming book on Apaches and not think that I'm not too SELECTIVE; after all, as an historian I have to be both objective and truthful. So I can highly recommend both Dan Thrapp's book on Victorio and this one by Eve Ball for all readers who want to understand and know the history of the eastern Chiricahua Apaches and their struggle to maintain there life way. Thank you. Dale C. MilesFirst historian of the San Carlos Apache Tribe

Not only does it tell of what The Warm Springs Apache had to endure, but of what they felt and of the internal conflicts amonst the apache people. In this book not only do they focus on Chief Victorio but all that surrounded him. I recommend all to read this book and see what it was like from the Apache point of veiw.

14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Superb book By A Customer Anyone interested in the Apache and the history of the American Southwest needs to read this book. You will likely consider the events and participants of this controversial period of history in a new light when you hear the "other side of the story" from one who was there. I wouldn't be surprised if you measure all other accounts of the "Apache Wars" period against Mr. Kaywaykla's testimony.

A Final Harvest is a series of stories about growing up in rural mid-century America, the community of characters that populate that time, and the way of life fashioned by parents who experienced both the Great Depression and World War II. Topics both large and small including Prohibition, Woman's Suffrage, POW camps, the Salk vaccine, farming, canning and old-fashioned discipline are revealed in "For My Girlfriend", "Something in Return", "Night", and "The Finest Thing". These chapters bring back the reality, pain, and humor from that time in history, and provide insight on why the emotional bonds to that era are so powerful for those who lived the events in these stories. The closing section of A Final Harvest ties together these events in a summary about aging and death in modern-day America, and offers a touchstone of reflection on how we cope as our loved ones decline and disappear, a touchstone interpreted through each reader's personal experience....

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tough and Gentle By Ed Wever This is an excellent book, with the rhythm and pace of a country narrator combined with the sophisticated background of a scholar. The author knows how to build a subtle tension and hold it until a quiet release at just the right point. There is genuine feeling in these stories and no overdone sentimentality. I thought ‘Night” and “For My Girlfriend” were especially moving. In several cases, storytelling is wrapped around a traditional way of life. For example, the highly detailed and scientific treatment of the sap-boiling process is arrived at naturally as part of the author’s narrative—as always, with a double-edge to it, being interwoven with his father’s reminiscences of his Navy experiences in WWII—and works as well as anything I have read by such greats as John McPhee. The clarity and interpretive beauty of the writing make this book worth the read.— Ed Wever

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. take time to enjoy the challenge of solving the mystery of people By Amazon Customer Through his active imagination, sense of curiosity, memory of details, hunger for history, expression of emotions, and masterful writing, the author weaves personal yet widely appealing stories about family relationships, townsfolk, growing up, work and play that keep the reader totally engaged and eager to read every sentence. Most of the tales in A Final Harvest could have happened in any small town and may jog the reader's own memories. I saved the reading of this book for long periods of time when I could savor every word, every remembrance, and every relationship to my own life; take time to enjoy the challenge of solving the mystery of people, places, or events described but not totally revealed at the beginnings of chapters; and even reread some of the exquisitely-written sentences and paragraphs. I experienced more emotions with this book than with any other I've read, including crying my way through "Autumn" and "Winter", knowing that husband and I, even though we act and pretend and actually sometimes believe we are still in our "Summers" are close to those later seasons that sit just around the corner waiting to snatch us. What a treasure. There is so much to love about this book.Marjorie Feathers

Neighbors All, By Betty Jo Sundstrom A Final Harvest preserves so much shared history of small New England towns: For those who grew up in that setting, these memories are ours, no matter where we reside. The book transported me back to so many places and events: to our “Old One Room School” where the last Shaker Brother came to talk to us of their unique way of life; to the Town Hall and the March of Dimes dances held there; to a time when farmers shared equipment and labor; to a place where, when you were old enough to work, throwing hay bales was everyone’s summer job.For those fortunate enough to have grown up during this period in history, these pages will bring back cherished memories. For others, enjoy our story and you will find the answer to: “What did they do before they had -------------.”John Sundstrom

Foreign gunboats forced China, Japan and Korea to open to the outside world in the mid-19th century. The treaties signed included rules forbidding local courts from trying foreigners; or, "extraterritoriality." Britain and the United States established consular courts in all three countries and, as trade grew, the British Supreme Court for China and Japan and the United States Court for China. These courts for many decades—over 100 years in China—dispensed British and American justice in the Far East. Extraterritoriality had a huge impact, which continues to this day, on how China and Japan view the world. This book tells its history through the fascinating cast of characters both on and before the bench and the many challenging issues the courts faced including war, riots, rebellion, corruption, murder, infidelity, and, even, a failed hanging. Doug Clark, a practicing lawyer who has lived in China, Japan and Korea for over 25 years, has trawled through dusty archives around the world to bring back to life this long-forgotten exotic world.

Gunboat Justice Volume 1: British and American Law Courts in China and Japan (1842–1943), by Douglas Clark

Review "A vital read. Here we find a century of foreign judges, lawyers and consuls attempting to control a city that attracted a legion of adventurers, criminals and sharks like no other in history. Gunboat Justice reveals the intersection of Shanghai’s formal administration and its dark underbelly. The most important book on Shanghai’s history for several decades." —Paul French, author, Midnight in Peking, winner of the Edgar Allan Poe award for best Fact Crime writing"For the first time, we now have a comprehensive, well-informed and humane account of the people and procedures in the British and American courts of East Asia. Doug Clark’s book brings that world to life, and restores it to its place in our histories of the era of the ‘unequal treaties.'" —Robert Bickers, author, Empire Made Me and The Scramble for China 1832-1914"A fascinating account of an extraordinary historical period with a wealth of intriguing characters—and a serious matter at its core." —Jonathan Fenby, author, The Penguin History of Modern China"A pathbreaking study of an important but long neglected topic, this book is a fascinating read and invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in law, empire and history in modern East Asia." —Dani Botsman, author, Punishment and Power in the Making of Modern Japan, and Professor of History, Yale University.

Take the 1874 Thomas Fawcett manslaughter case as an example: A British crew led by Fawcett were building a lighthouse in Shandong. The local mob were unhappy because they profited from ship repairing. In fact, to increase business, they would lure ships into damage using misleading guiding lights at night. In the chaos, one local was shot dead and Fawcett arrested. The legendary judge, and the founder of the British extraterritorial judiciary in far east, the China and Japan Supreme Court (established per treaty post Opium War), Edmund Hornby, came to Shandong to adjudicate in front an expat jury while observed by local officials. Hornby believed shooting wasn't necessary given the circumstances and that Fawcett should be convicted. The jury acquitted Fawcett, to Hornby's deep disappointment, but procedurally there was nothing he could do. However, Hornby was more furious when he received a letter from the British consul who complained that Hornby did not do enough to achieve a conviction thus damaging the Britain-China relationship (All so reflective of what tend to happen today in China and in its diplomatic relationships.) By then, the local mob attacked Hornby's residence and he escaped under the protection of a British gunboat, AND came onshore to try more cases in Shandong applying the English case law, accompanied by gun barrels and red coats, before returning the Supreme Court in Shanghai, whose building now forms a portion of the old British Consulate on the Bund in Shanghai. Fascinating history.

Engaging read and facinating case study on the interplay between law, politics, and culture in east Asia By Amazon Customer This is legal history done well. Clark is a thoroughly engaging writer who weaver big picture history, detailed anecdotes and legal technicalities in an highly engaging way. I anticipated a serious and possibly boring read but was pleasantly surprised and devoured all three volume over ten days - which is saying a lot for a full time litigator. Highly recommended for anyone intesrested in Asian history, colonialism, and legal history.

Clark has been able to use contemporaneous media and case reports to bring back to life the these long forgotten courts. The details in which the courts were reported in the media is amazing to modern day readers - particularly their not so flattering comments on the skills of some of the judges. The story of extraterritoriality in Japan has rarely been told and the book illuminates this aspect well. It is interesting to ponder if the current Chinese leadership is much more attuned to how to deal with the rest of the world than the late Qing was
