I was extremely willing to read this book, since I come from a Mexican/Spanish background that has undergone a whole lot of Americanization for the past two generations. Finally, a cultural sociology book about my family.Is it possible for a textbook to be over-referenced? The arc of this book extends from public service programs, employment benefits (which was pretty eye-opening for me, since I didn't realize that my mom and her brothers & sisters working in a cannery being a specifically Mexican immigrant kind of job), character building and family planning, and home healthcare practices. All along the bottom margins, however, is anywhere from a line to three-quarters of a page of footnotes. This causes each chapter to be well-supported, yes, but ultimately scattered, both in where the data is taken from and what is being addressed.
