About the Author

Alex Toledano received his PhD in Late Modern European History at the University of California, Berkeley, and specializes in the history of Paris neighborhoods since the French Revolution. His dissertation,　Sharing Paris: The Use and Ownership of a Neighborhood, Its Streets, and Public Spaces, 1950-2012, studies the roles of visitors and residents in shaping community and daily life in Parisian neighborhoods. Based in Paris, he is the co-Founder and President of VISTO Images, an art consulting firm that curates art programs for luxury properties and private collections around the world.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting trip to the past! By Bookworm Slickly produced picture book with interesting period photographs of 1890's Paris. However, commentary by the author is minimal and at times sketchy, as if this was a project that he just tossed off in his spare time. For example, an interesting error (?) caught my eye on page 78 where the author is describing the Pantheon and states that it was designed as a church but since construction was completed in revolutionary 1789, its purpose was "reimagined by Voltaire to serve its current function." Quite a trick since Voltaire had been dead for 11 years! Since the author holds a Ph.D. in late European history, I am sure that this was a mere slip. As a picture book this will be of interest for lovers of the City of Light and history buffs like myself.
