Cursed in New York: Stories of the Damned in the Empire State, by Randi Minetor

Review "It is forthright and fact-based, laying out the history, the happenings, and the reasons people believe these curses exist. Minetor sees no reason to oversell the spookiness of it all, which makes it a fun, and interesting read." (Buffalo Spree)

From the Author The stories you are about to read are based on oral history, folklore, written accounts, and--in many cases--actual fact. In approaching the question of cursed people, objects, and places, I have endeavored to use my skills as a researcher to rout out the facts among the tales of mayhem and malevolence. I followed the words of the famous Russian proverb, "Doveryai, no proveryai," or in English, "Trust, but verify." When I could find no verification, I chose not to tell that story. In some cases, it became impossible to deny that a person cursed by an adversary came to harm, or that an individual who owned a cursed object suffered dire consequences. I make no attempt to determine how such a thing could take place; I am only a humble reporter, not a medium, mystic, scientist, or priest.      In reading this book, I caution you to heed the words of William Shakespeare: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Evil may lurk, but not all that lurks is evil. Read on.

About the Author Randi Minetor has written nearly thirty books for Globe Pequot Press and Falcon Guides, including a number of books on America's national parks, Backyard Birding: A Guide to Attracting and Identifying Birds, Hiking Waterfalls New York, Scenic Routes & Byways New York, and Day Trips Hudson River Valley. She lives in Rochester, New York.

And I suggest that you read this book.I received the book for free in exchange for an honest review. So, no kidding, it's a great book. Whether you're a history buff or a fan of the unexplained - or both - there's something to like in each of these chapters. (In fact, if you weren't already, you may find you're both by the end of the book.)Fastidiously researched and written in a highly enjoyable narrative, you'll love the "here's where the story gets creepy" parts. Minetor lays out logical, practical reasons these incidents of the damned shouldn't happen or even exist, then proceeds to make your neck hair stand straight up!As a native New Yorker, I reveled in these stories of the inexplicable located around my early stomping grounds. As a long-suffering Buffalo Bills fan, I thank the author for a convenient place to lay blame. That cycle I've been riding every football season? You know, the one of hope rising only to be dashed? Well, I've found the brakes. Minetor's "steaming pile of truth" has given me an object to focus my disappointment on, rather than yelling at my TV, cussing (cursing?) at individual coaches or players.Read it and see if you can't find some solace, too, after those hairs on the back of your neck lie down, that is.

After living in Rochester, NY all my life I've received a free copy of Randi Minetor's book Cursed In New York, Stories of the Damned in the Empire State in return for an unbiased review, and I'm finding that there curses that have effected people and places around the state for many, many yearsNot one to believe in curses or hauntings, I began reading the book with a bit of skepticism and finished reading it with a feeling that there are indeed things that can't be explained and that I now feel might actually be happening.Never having been a sports fan I'd never heard about the curse that effected some of our New York teams. My neighbor the Buffalo Bills has been a victim and I never knew.I knew that theater people were superstitious but I didn't know about musicians believing in them also but now I know about the ninth symphony. Fascinating.Every story was well researched and explained, and I learned a lot. I had to skip the story of the black dog because I can't read about animal cruelty. Thanks to the author, who warned her readers not to go further if they would be similarly affected. If this is a topic you'd be interest in, this book is the read for you.

Cursed in New York is as much a history book as it is a book about the supernatural. Minetor is an incredible docent who leads the reader through the corridors of New York’s past, bringing history alive. The amount of solid research that went into this book is clearly evident. Cursed in New York made me want to visit many of the places mentioned. Even if you have never visited the Niagara Gorge (e.g.), Minetor’s vibrant and detailed descriptions will make you feel as if you are there. As to the curses…some seem conceivable, others more far-fetched, but either way, they’re mostly all in good fun. History books can sometimes be dry and boring, but Minetor’s colorful and light-hearted approach makes Cursed in New York a fascinating and enjoyable read. From the introduction to the last page, I couldn’t put the book down. I would highly recommend Cursed in New York to anyone who is interested in either history or the supernatural.
