Superb Documentary By A Customer Perhaps I am a bit prejudice since I am also one of the contributors to the book.Before retiring from Civil Service (Navy) I was the configuration manager for the reactivations of the four Battleships. I was familiar with the author's previous works and was very impressed with his attention to the personal stories of the ships. After retirement, I was then free to provide the author any and all personal knowledge of the ship's reactivation period at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Paul selected the best memories I documented and included them superbly into the book. The author does not go into the technical aspects as to how a Battleship is built, leaving that up to other authors more inclined to include how many rivets were driven, etc. Though I wish he had the space to include the TRUE story of the origin of the cracked armor panel in the turret of barbette III. No, it was NOT caused by the grounding in Hampton Roads but was a heat treating surface fracture that occured during manufacture. But technical manuals are not the author's style and I am glad they are not. After all, a ship is really the culmination of dedicated and skilled human beings who built her and the ship's success is the dedication and bravery of the men who sailed her. Paul Stillwell brings this human interest across very well. And, I'm sorry, but I did not buy the book. I was sent an autographed copy by the author which I will treasure forever. Richard A. Outstanding accuracy of dates & places By hscharf@webtv.net (Harold Scharf) I was part of the original crew aboard the Missouri from Commissioning Day, June 11, 1944 until March, 1946 as a Radioman in the CR Division. Paul Stillwell did an outstanding job of giving an accurate account of dates and places involving the USS Missouri from the first bolt installed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard until the present time. I use this book quite often to refresh my memory of the exact dates of various things that happened while I was aboard. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing an accurate history of the USS Missouri = BB63.

It gives the reader a thoroughly enjoyable view of what it was like to serve on this famous warship.Part of the Iowa Class Battleships (four built, New Jersey, Missiour, Iowa and Wisconson) these Battleships are considered by many naval experts to be the perfect blend of speed, firepower and protection. Only the Japanese Yamoto and Musashi were bigger. When these ships were designed, no one knew that the day of the battleship was over, naval air power and aircraft carriers reigned supreme in the contest of the Pacific. There were never any Battleship battles as imagined.This book by Paul Stillwell is much more than nuts and bolts of the Missouri. It gives the stories behind the steel, the men who crewed the ship, providing a rare glimpse of what it was like to be a sailor aboard a mighty ship from June 1944 at her commisioning to her service in the Korean War, the Vietnam war and finally, the 1991 Gulf War.The photograpsh are excellent, showing interior as well as exterior shots. There are line diagrams to show the ship and what makes it tick. This is a pricey book, but well worth the cost for anyone interested in naval affairs, naval history and a fitting tribute not just to the ship, but the men who served. Higly recommended.

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Skinner One thing this prescient book achieves--and possibly the reason Chesterton wrote it--is to show just how varied such types can be. Our own time, (and he must have foreseen it) for all it's electronic wizardry and lightening communication, is devoid of much true diversity of personality, talent and perspective. The infantile nature of modern political debate is a perfect example. Really, there is no debate at all, just cartoonish demonizing of one's opponent. Nor is there any particular yearning for fundamental truth. Say what you will about the likes of Stevenson, Tolstoy or Savonarola (my favorite) they were originals and, in the case of the latter, prepared to die for their beliefs. Today, our crusaders are merely looking for face time which will allow them to angle their way into a lucrative career. They speak boldly and then retire to Georgetown watering holes to clang glasses with "members from across the aisle." Or they yup it up at parties attended by other "names" regardless of what those names profess. "It's all good" is their motto. But Chesterton manages to draw some quick sketches of personalities with real flavor and who said it's not at all good and it ought to be better--personalities who, in today's world, would probably be exiled to oblivion for reasons of mouth feel. He was able to do this because Western society hadn't become completely therapeutic and (which is to say roughly the same thing) chickafied. I'll take Sir Walter Scott over Camille Paglia, any day!

I did not know this collection of poems would one day become a book. As the poems came to life from the dust of an adulteress affair, a battle ensued within me. For 30 years, after the demise of that relationship, I became a raging alcoholic and drug addict. I had three failed marriages, I lost my family, most of my friends, my business and my license to practice medicine. I got busted and my dirty little secrets were revealed. Suddenly, I was naked before all who knew me. Then we reconnected. My soulmate and I were one again. A steamy adulteress affair had begun. The inner turmoil that resulted from this war between the spirit and the flesh made my drug addiction and all of my losses seem like a walk in the park. As you read these poems, you will see the conflict that raged within me. I refused to let these writings die. They are, and will always be, a reminder of the adversities which ultimately convicted me. I pray that one day, the scandal of my repentance will be greater than the scandal of my sins.

Statdmiller's talent as a writer has never been in question.The structure and pace of this series works well. I just wanted to get that out of the way. This is as much a week by week glance of Mandy's relationship as it is a window into the mind of someone with a cavernous hole where her self-esteem and self-respect should be. The descriptions of her sexual interactions with her boyfriend are not arousing, they're disturbing. He's figured out all of her psychological buttons and he presses them for his arousal, an act she misguidedly and tellingly finds erotic. Mandy never displays a moment of confidence in this relationship. She's terrified her boyfriend will leave her, and he knows it, and he uses it. Watching these two do their dysfunctional dance has its limits.

I really enjoyed this By Meg C This was not the genre I was looking for but bought the Shadow Agents box 1-3 set anyway SOOOO glad I did I am hooked on this Shadow series. Not a slow dragged out read.. great story line loved how the characters are introduced as the plot thickened. You weren’t quite sure “who dunit” until the end, lots of angles loved that the story moved along at a good clip that keep me reading up in to the night. Ms. Eden is definitely on my list of authors to keep up with..Just finished the Shadow Agents box set 1-3 and already purchased the balance of this series.. yep for me it was that good!!

About the Author Ernst Schnabel (1913-1986) gave up school at the age of 16 to sail the world and become a writer. Following an apprenticeship in the Merchant Navy, he served as a sailor from 1932 to 1936. He had written two novels by the outbreak of WWII, and was immediately drafted into the German navy where he continued to write. After the war, Schnabel, along with a group of intellectuals, was authorized by the British military to create a new German broadcasting station. Schnabel wrote works of fiction, essays, a libretto, radio plays, scripts, and documentaries, and was a pioneer of radio broadcasting. Erika Prins is a historian at Anne Frank House in Amsterdan. Gillian Walnes is the cofounder and executive director of Anne Frank Trust UK.

The Definitive Anne Frank Biography By Amazon Customer The best of the Anne Frank books, the first to tell the world what happened both before she went into hiding and what happened after her discovery, as well as the only volume aside from her own diary to do her memory any justice. Schnabel's writing is as brilliant as Anne's own and tells her unique backstory within the context of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands and chronicles in several chapters the tragic impact of the Holocaust in Holland. It is every bit as remarkable as the Diary itself and provides absolute proof (if any was ever needed) that Anne's words were indeed authentic and worthy of the legendary and historical importance that she had by then achieved.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Trail of a Child By Otto I first read exerts from this book many years ago in an Anne Frank tribute book and wanted to read more. I read the German edition back in the 1980s. The book was the first of its kind, interviewing people who had known Anne before and during the war, as well as people that were in the same camps. First published on the 1950s, the author uses Anne's pseudo names and more information is known about Anne, her family, her fate, and her diary than was known then. A good read for those who would like to know more about Anne Frank.

Darker in tone and message from the previous two, it urgentlywarns that "If Israel will not be a light unto the nations it will not be alight unto the Jews, and thus will not be able to mobilize the energy andpassion needed to survive." As a result of misguided policies that cling to thepast and have no investment in the democratic rule of law (theocratic power,settlement authorization, and land idolatry) Israel may yet self-destruct andbecome a third world state. Working in the prophetic tradition of speaking truth topower, Tsvi warns that power is being steadily gained by Israelis with littleappreciation for democracy, the Mizrahim (Jews from Arab countries), theultra-orthodox, and resolute Greater Israel settlers. He extrapolates out to2048, by which time Arabs and Orthodox extremists are the only ones left, thebest and the brightest having gone elsewhere by 2032: "By 2048, the countryknown as Israel has ceased to exist, 100 years after its establishment." A very important work By Educator Bisk, an Israeli long an optimist championing the idea that Israel's future in the global economy resides in its hi-tech and scientific sector, has in the last few years become increasingly pessimistic. In his lively and very readable assessment of Israel's political culture, he argues that the rise to political dominance of theocratic power and Greater Israel land mysticism will distort public finance, cut profoundly into scientific and liberal arts educational budgets, force a brain drain from Israel, and turn it into a third world state. If Bisk indicates thereby that he is no right-winger, he makes very it very clear that he is neither of the left. Palestinian refusal to accept Israel's offers of statehood have pulled the rug from under the left. In his mind, neither a two state solution, nor a one state solution with either an Arab majority electorate, or a Jewish apartheid state, is possible.What then? Bisk offers an extraordinary but plausible speculation, making his case first, with an illuminating discussion of the various forms of Zionism, those of Herzl, of Weizmann, who hoped for an Israel promoting liberal scientific life; of labor zionists such as Sirkin and Ben Gurion; of free market Greater Israel zionists such as Jabotinsky and Begin, and many more, to indicate how a combination of misguided and anachronistic idealisms and a variety of unintended consequences, are bringing Israel into what none of the contending zionists ever imagined, a theocracy with no investment in the democratic rule of law.But now comes a shocker, as Bisk, always the realist, unveils a quite believable prognosis, which he casts in the form of Bellamy's Looking Backwards -- that Palestinians will, for once, get their act together, and take advantage of their numbers to forge a potent political force. What certainly can result, and again, these strategic moves are speculations built on close term possibilities, is a Jewish nation drained of of its demoralized best and brightest, and moving toward suicide.A powerful book.

By Book Reader Word went out on the APF mailing list to check out this book and review it, so here is my review.Moving past the melodramatic title, I quickly noticed the author's near-obsession with resentment. He seems to believe the historical trajectory of Israel and its settler movement is what it is in significant part because of Israeli resentment against the well-known double standard that the world has had against Israel. But I see the double standard problem for Israel as mostly over at this point internationally. Similarly, the civilized world maintains a double standard whereby civilized countries are supposed to maintain higher standards than plainly criminal regimes of which there are a number of cases in the world today, but no one really classifies Israel among the North Koreas, Eritreas, etc. so of course Israel is expected to do better that those and that's not a double standard as the term is usually meant. Opposition to Israel's existence is mostly over, as is the idea that Israel should hold to (or be held to) higher standards than other advanced nations. On the other hand, opposition to the settler movement is due to legitimate international standards applicable everywhere, and not due to a double standard applied only to Israel. It is true that, historically, projects of conquest and colonization with displacement of the original inhabitants were generally accepted. But they are not any more. Similarly, the Japanese program of conquest and empire building in the 20th century was modeled after European activities earlier, but to Japan's detriment, these activities were no longer accepted or tolerated by the time Japan decided to do them. At this moment in history, Israel is engaging in a classic campaign of conquest, colonization, and perhaps displacement of pre-existing populations in the West Bank. This is no longer accepted internationally and it is not a double standard to oppose it. I'm not Israeli so I can't judge for sure his claim of a general resentment driving Israeli actions, but it seems very doubtful to me. The land idolatry mindset he also cites seems much more sensible. For a book on futurism, the coverage of history is extensive but citations are spotty and hence reliability is sometimes a question, particularly when he expounds on the collective psyche of Israeli society at various times in history. Extrapolating into the future, he does not cover alternative possible scenarios, focusing instead on the possibility of a demographically driven democratic ending of the state. For example, he imagines voters choosing to rename Israel to Palestine. Sorry but that just isn't going to happen. The more likely scenario is some combination of Israel foregoing formal annexation of the West Bank (thereby preventing the natives from voting), and curtailing of true democracy as required to maintain control. The latter is made more likely by his interesting projection that the Jewish electorate in Israel will become progressively more dominated by people who do not appreciate democracy, namely Mizrahim and ultra-orthodox land idolators, something that does in fact seem to be a trend.On the plus side, the author has some understanding of both Israeli and American Jewish mindsets, a combination sadly lacking among most commentators.So I'll call the book unique and interesting, but hardly the last word.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. In search of a new Zionism By Peter Margolis As usual, Tsvi Bisk has written a provocative and abundantly documented book that deserves to be read. I can only imagine that intellectual distance Bisk has traveled from optimistic (The Optimistic Jew, 2007) to suicidal (The Suicide of the Jews, 2015). The answer apparently is to be found in his perceived contrast between Jewish tradition "hijacked by a politicized right-wing religious establishment dedicated to land idolatry" and quintessentially secular Zionism.Yet something bothers me about this. It suggests that Jewish Nobel Prize laureates, Israeli companies traded on NASDAQ, patents, and venture capital are the true measure of Judaism as (in Bisk’s terms) an "ism", that is "an ideology about life that contains a religious tradition". Of course, NASDAQ etc. are worthy things, but what is there about them that would convince anyone to remain Jewish? And what of Jewish tradition itself? Has the religious tradition really become so completely discredited that it is best replaced by a technology-driven market economy, and the sooner, the better? Are we to believe that the settlement movement has stripped 3,500 years of Jewish tradition of any capacity to shed light on the human condition for Jews or anyone else?I note that the Jewish thinker Ahad Ha'Am, associated with “spiritual Zionism” that predicated Jewish political sovereignty on the revitalization of Judaism, is conspicuously absent from Bisk’s list of Jewish thinkers shaped by the Enlightenment. Perhaps it is this brand of Zionism (in contrast to both politicized secularism and politicized religiosity) that is missing from the mix? While the efforts to reclaim Jewish tradition from the right-wing settlement variety (and other forms of fundamentalism) by avowedly non-observant Israeli Jews is in its early stages, it is nevertheless not negligible, and probably not more of a long shot than was political Zionism itself at its outset. The combination of the online availability of all flavors of Jewish knowledge, with the unmet cultural and spiritual hunger of Jews in Israel and the Diaspora, suggests new ways of constructing Jewish life in which any self-proclaimed Jewish authority purporting to be "authentic Judaism" is at best one pebble in the mosaic.Will this grow and develop? Who knows? One might very well be on safer ground to bet on the path to suicide. And while I take no comfort from it, I am forced to admit that some of those in the Diaspora who are inclined to creatively construct a self-invented Jewish identity mosaic have already tuned out Israel as a factor in their lives. Nevertheless, for the great majority of Jews who are neither completely religious nor completely secular (just as they inhabit a symbiotic reality that is neither entirely physical not entirely virtual), Israel, with its accomplishments, its challenges, and yes, its land retains an unrivaled symbolic power.Perhaps the model to be explored is not the brittle secular-Zionist/religious-settler divide, but the amorphous middle ground of the masortiim ("traditionalists," Jewishly committed Israelis who use the freedoms afforded by secularism to take Judaism on their own terms, rather than divest themselves of it or abandon it to the religious establishment), variously measured as constituting 20-40% of the Israeli population. In the Diaspora, this has its parallel, ironically enough, in the unmatched success of Chabad-Lubavitch, based on their willingness to provide episodic Jewish experiences, easily located online, without demanding dues or affiliation, to people who have not the slightest inclination to adopt an Orthodox lifestyle. While there is much about Chabad that deserves criticism, my point is that their symbiotic online/offline buffet-style Judaism is a functioning model that recommends itself to any Jewish ideology that wants to make itself felt in the Jewish world.Ultimately, it is the citizens of Israel who will decide their country’s direction. Let us hope that Israeli society continues to evolve a middle way between the stark and explosive dichotomy that Bisk presents. In any event, this book is a good read to stimulate thought about alternative futures.

Even if you are not the book was full of facts and I am sure that Kimberly thoroughly enjoyed researching her family's history. Since I knew Kimberly, I found it very enlightening. I learned things about the family that I had not known. Just wish when Rose talked to me that we had more time. The suspense in a few had me on edge but was able to talk myself down from the ledge. LOL. Truly great writing and character development. Makes me want to travel to Oregon and Washington state.

Presenting the facts objectively, Arthur Ellis Jr., the most renowned Ruby researcher of his time, returns a decade after he compiled the definitive transcription of McCollum’s courtroom case to give his own interesting account of revisionism through a retrospective analysis that seeks to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about Ruby McCollum.Unable to sum up the morally muddled events, the author evokes existentialism, saying, “ an inquisitive young mind will take up the challenge and write a dissertation on it,” as if he is too old to conclude a case that he grew up with; despite this implication of personal incompetence and conclusive shortcoming, the author shines through the shortsightedness of fellow commentators to demonstrate the fact that Ruby, by choosing her own destiny, regardless of what the legality of the setting might have been back then, had become the Rosa Parks of her time.“McCollum also created her own values to bring meaning to her own life through a steadfast commitment to define herself according to her own terms, regardless of the race, class and gender issues that she faced in the Jim Crow South.”These actions lead us to think she was actively trying to transcend her life and times by acting “authentically,” even if that entailed murder. More importantly, however, she is characterized as a woman with pride that chose her predicament and would not back down or conform to solitude and silence like her contemporary women, or those that preceded her, had done.An important theme in recounting evidence for Ellis Jr. is to not shortchange real judicial and social progress we’ve made since the times of Jim Crow, and to examine very closely the judicial trappings of the time to not sway opinions from the modern day legislation, lest risk an entanglement with fact and fiction; in staying true to reality, Ellis Jr. provides us with real liberty by setting Ruby free and telling her truth.In telling that truth, Elis contends that Ruby’s decision to murder her paramour was, in fact, her own — one separate from the many pressures and competing urges she, and all of us, face on a daily basis — and that regardless of the will to choose it was a “reasoned choice,” a death sentence for her abusive lover rather than an act of pure self-preservation. Ruby McCollum took it upon herself to act as her own agent and to reclaim what was left of her tarnished self-image and physical life at the cost of another’s. Ellis Jr. makes it clear that he fully grasps the details of the case, but he implies that he does not fully understand if she if guilty outside of a textbook, and instead leaves the reader by the appendix to define Mrs. McCollum’s actions outside of the discrepancies that he works diligently to debunk.Through testimonies from contemporary friends and foes of the trial that support Ruby’s case and her autonomy when committing a homicide, Elis does well to remain as loyal and objective to the image of Mrs. McCollum and her criminal circumstances as possible. Fittingly, Hall of Mirrors is an aptly named monograph of a woman’s civil rights struggle that is complete with flashbacks paralleling forward to the norms of modernity and current jurisdictional tendencies that, coupled with an excellent understanding of real morality that offers a third way of looking at right and wrong — beyond black and white law — by promoting the tenets of Existentialist burden and the reliance of identity to foster the correct choice of acting authentically in a bind, it shows us that actions do really speak louder than words.https://hungrymonsterreview.wordpress.com/
