In the spring of 1685, Lord Hugo Everly, ardent supporter of the Protestant upstart the Duke of Monmouth, vanishes without a trace just before the Monmouth Rebellion, leaving future generations forever baffled as to what might have become of him. In 2013, while visiting Everly Manor as part of her job as a location scout for a film production company, Neve Ashley stumbles onto a secret passage that leads her into the seventeenth century and straight into the path of the ill-fated lord. Neve is able to return safely to her own time, but she can’t forget the man she met or the fate that’s about to befall him. Against her better judgment, Neve decides to go back and warn Hugo of impending danger, not realizing that she’s walking into danger herself, for history is never straightforward, and people’s motives not always what they appear to be. Taken hostage by the very man she was trying to save, Neve is trapped in the seventeenth century, her fate now intertwined with that of her captor, and the future something that neither one of them could have envisioned.

This story is about Neve, a film production scout looking for a place to shoot their next film. She ends up at Everly Manor and meets up with the very handsome and charming Lord of the Manor, Max. Max sets his sights on Neve but there is something she doesn't trust about Max. During her inspection of the property she stumbles upon a passage that sends her back to the 1600's to meet with the former Lord of Everly Manor, Hugo. Hugo is a person who was killed in his life due to his political pursuits and Neve sets out to warn him without causing too much attention on herself. She tries to warn him and then goes through the passage back to her own time but something about Hugo is making her want to go back and make sure she helps him survive. Hugo starts to believe Neve and decides that he will take Neve on a trip to further his political aspirations because he doesn't want her to take off again and will be introduced as his mistress. For me, this is always the best part of a romance when the hero and heroine are getting to know each other and developing friendship, trust and start falling in love. When reading Time Travel Romance books, you have to take a leap with the author that yes, we all know that time travel isn't a real thing. What makes a good story is when it appears that it is well researched to the point a reader can believe in the time period and if the chemistry between the characters is believable. Fortunately, theauthor did a good job on both. The descriptive writing about England in the 1600's lead me into the time period nicely. Neve and Hugo spend much time together so we get to know them through their conversations. Hugo was described in history as not such a kind man and we saw him through Neve's eyes that he was a incredibly smart, kind, generous and overall sexy guy. Their relationship developed slowly with tension building throughout. There was really just one love scene and was not overdone or overt. There are secondary characters such as Hugo's sister and she was also an interesting addition to the story. Max and Hugo are distant relatives and this side story also held my interest. Why not a 5 star? At times I felt like I was watching a Sex in the City episode because Neve would ask questions of herself often that was much like Carrie Bradshaw. Lastly, my favorite time travel romances are quite formulaic. Sassy modern woman goes back in time and meets up with sexy man from the past and they fall in love in the past. This book had that but there was some time traveling back in forth that took away from my enjoyment. There will be a book 2 but this one can be a standalone.

What a fantastic story! I love the historical fiction genre, and the time travel component brings an extra level of excitement and depth to this book. I have read all of Irina's books, and have enjoyed each and every one of them, but I felt like The Passage showcased the author's abilities in a new way. I found the historical element of the book to be quite accurate and the portrayal of life in the 17th century was so realistic. The pacing was perfect as I was expertly drawn into the turmoil and plot twists experiencing the struggle, fear, and intrigue right alongside the characters. Many times I held my breath anticipating what would happen next as the unpredictability of the story kept me totally engrossed. Although I've read many time travel books, I found The Passage to be fresh and the writing to be well developed and rich. I think this book is a treat for lovers of historical fiction or anyone looking for a captivating tale that will stay with you long after you've finished the last page. Looking forward to more gems from Irina Shapiro.

First part of the book was a lot of history which made the first part hard to read through. Reading the history of England made the story flat and boring. However, halfway through the book it starts to pick up with twist and turns which made it more interesting. Then the book became weighed down again with a lot history, in which I found myself skimming through the pages to get back to the characters of the story. It ended with a good twist and it makes you want to read the second book. I only hope it's not focus so much on a history lesson, but on the characters this time.
