With 2015 being the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain – arguably the Hawker Hurricane’s ‘finest hour’ – it is appropriate to tell the story of the surviving Hurricanes from around the world. Building on research originally started thirty years ago, the author has delved into the archives to amass new information – and in the process managed to identify positively one particular Hurricane which had proved elusive for more than forty years.Today a number of Hurricanes are being privately restored globally. However the oldest in existence, a veteran of both the British Expeditionary Force to France in 1939 and the Battle of Britain is displayed in the Science Museum, London and the youngest – the very last Hurricane ever built – is still flying with the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. This book documents each aircraft by country of origin and mark by mark from the day it left the factory up to the present day. Some have incredible histories whereas others served in very mundane, but still essential, second-line roles until they were disposed of. Where possible each aircraft is illustrated with a present-day photograph together with others taken throughout its life. From the serious enthusiast to the casual museum or air show visitor, if you have an interest in the Hurricane this is the book for you.REVIEWS Anyone with an interest in the Hurricane and those who are about to build any of the recent excellent Hurricane kits will find this a fascinating addition to their bookshelf.Model Airplane International "…heavily illustrated and well produced and will serve as an excellent guide not only for historians but also warbird enthusiasts."Air Classics Magazine, Feb 2016

About the Author Gordon Riley was first introduced to the world of vintage aviation through his father, who had been a Lancaster pilot during World War II. His interest in preserved vintage aircraft came from visits to the Skyfame Museum at Staverton and the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden in the 1960s; he later became one of the founding members of the Midland Aircraft Preservation Society. He started as an editorial assistant on Aviation News and remained there for a year. From there he published Britain's first magazine dedicated to vintage aircraft - the aptly titled Vintage Aircraft magazine which he edited from 1976-1986. Gordon's previous work includes Spitfire Survivors (1984), with later editions being co-written with the late Graham Trant and, more recently, Peter Arnold.

Sydney Camm’s aviation masterpiece reborn in the 21st century By The Guardian This 224-page illustrated book by Gordon Riley is probably the definitive 21st century reference volume on all restored examples of Sydney Camm’s remarkable aviation masterpiece, and claims to be “a complete catalogue of every existing Hurricane worldwide”.The first 145 pages detail British-built aircraft and the remainder are devoted to Canadian-built machines. The discovery of many surviving examples in the former Soviet Union after the end of the Cold War, and of many more throughout Canada in the 1980s and 90s, means there are more Hurricanes flying now than at any time since the 1950s.Riley’s text is well-edited, literate and typo-free, punctuated by photographs of the restoration work-in-progress and finished aircraft in flying condition. It’s important to stress that this is not an operational history of this great aircraft (“an aircraft without vices” as the pilots claimed) and does not detail the combat record of the Hurricane: its focus is purely on the restoration to flying condition of surviving examples.

HURRICANE FLIES UNDER FALSE FLAG By shadow22 I am an aviation historian and looked forward to Riley’s book since I learned of the project over a year ago. Mr Riley had the opportunity to create an accurate window into the history of surviving Hawker Hurricanes. Unfortunately, instead of presenting facts, as they are known, and let the reader decide what is right, and what is wrong Riley regurgitates flawed information in the face of corrective efforts made by his research specialists. Many restored Hurricanes, in the UK, have false Serial Number plates, which could create problems with sales into American markets. Riley should have mentioned these cases, and let the buyers beware, as they say.An example of this is his chapter on the famous Hurricane G-HURI. Although Riley was supplied with evidence, indicating this machine is 5424, he has promoted the idea that this is 5711 even as his research specialists maintain the only part of this aircraft, that is 5711, is the Serial Plate 5711!G-HURI was originally imported into the UK in 1982 and registered in 1983 with the CAA as 5547, (and is still registered as 5547.) When it was realized this serial applied to a Canadian Hurricane, shipped to Russia, in 1943, never to return, there was a quick switch to another false flag – 5711.If this one significant chapter reflects the accuracy of the remainder, this publication should be listed under fiction
