Classic Cherry Adair By cjr This is the first book in the Lodestone series and I'm glad I read the second one before this one because it made the second book even better for me.This book is about Zak, a man who was having an adventure in Venezuela with his brother when he meets and has what starts out as a one night stand with a woman named Acadia. All 3 are kidnapped by a group of mercenaries and since both men are injured, decide, after they manage to escape, that they will split up. Zak and Acadia go one way and his brother goes the other. This book takes you thru a lot of emotions: fear, anger, loss, lust, happiness, abject terror, love, betrayal, etc. It's another can't put it down, can't stop reading until the very end book that is classic Cherry Adair!

When he's not in the boardroom of his billion dollar tech company,  Zak and his brother,  Gideon, travel the world searching for extreme sports to participate in. Their current endeavor has them in Venezuela to BASE jump one of the world's highest water falls. The night before the jump, Zak picks up mysterious Acadia Gray in the hotel bar and the two have a scorching hot one night stand. They wake up the next morning to armed men in Zak's room and they are kidnapped along with Gideon. A risky escape separates the brothers and has Zak nearly at death's door. When Zak recovers,  he suddenly has an eerie sixth sense that he can't understand. Running for their lives, Zak and Acadia have to be smarter than the ones hunting them. Will they survive this deadly chase? Will their one night stand turn into something more?Acadia was such a conundrum. She was great at playing the flakey  woman but underneath that facade was a street smart person. She actually ended up saving Zak's behind on more than one occasion.Zak's picture is probably in the dictionary next to the definition for brooding male. Having lost his wife, a reporter for CNN to a car bomb,  Zak is full of regrets. His wife also did a number on him psychologically. Somehow Acadia manages to get through his thick skull and remind him that all women are not like his deceased wife.Adair packs plenty of suspense into this book. Literally from the first page when the kidnappers find Zak and Acadia in bed until the last page. Her descriptions of the jungle and the creepy crawlies residing in it had me shuddering. No way could I be calm like Acadia was in some of the scenes!Hush is the first book in The Lodestone series. It's an action packed read. With well developed characters and tons of suspense,  readers won't be able to put this book down. This is a must read for any romantic suspense

By Kathleen McClain Wealthy internet entrepreneur brothers Zakary and Gideon are kidnapped for ransom in a hotel in Venezuela along with Acadia who had had a one night stand with Zak. This is the story of Zak’s and Acadia’s escape from captivity and their being chased by villains while they try to rescue Gideon and escape the country. Lots of gunfire, car bombs, blown up buildings and helicopters, etc. And lots of hot sex. The couple also spend time trying to figure out who has targeted them and continues to anticipate their every move.Adair’s strengths are her complex characters, great dialogue, ability to portray sexual chemistry and sexual interactions well, and suspense at a level which keeps us turning pages.Naïve Acadia is absolutely delightful as the very smart, cautious maker of lists and planner of everything. Zak is an adrenaline junky who loves high risk adventures. Boy, what a pair---the tension is great and the dialogue is often hilarious. In first third of the book, Zak is always dismissing Acadia’s cautious “female” ideas. Until she continually saves his butt and he absolutely falls for her. Meanwhile, she is constantly getting put out by his lack of planning and his dismissal of her ideas. When they’re in captivity, for example, Acadia comes up with a plan to help them escape but Zak doesn’t even want to listen. HE WILL get them out. “Zak gave her one of those looks men had perfected since they’d clubbed their dinner, the I-have-important-business-don’t-bother-me-little-lady look.”There is also great character development as Zak starts to care for Acadia after having lived like an emotional zombie for the two years since his wife’s death, for which he feels responsible. He also comes to recognize there are other ways to judge people. Acadia realizes she can be courageous, resourceful and a great partner in times of danger—even if she really, really hates bombs and guerillas and guns. The sexual tension is terrific. Acadia has been pulled out of her sexual comfort zone by her attraction to Zak. He is amazed at her passion and his inexplicable attraction to this woman who is so not his type. This is one of those opposites attract things. The sex scenes are well done and I love how Zak develops a fixation for wanting to touch Acadia: her calm strength centers him, even to the extent that the high risk becomes less appealing to him.Okay, so what is there not to like? Well, the plotting and “the details.” As in all of the Adair books I have read, there are logistical details that don’t make sense and/or aren’t explained and plot holes and WTF’s. Now, I generally have little tolerance for characters who keep doing stupid things. These people do do a few stupid things---although I am so charmed by the characters I can overlook a few. For example: Acadia is very upset that her friends who were supposed to meet her must be scared to death at her disappearance, yet when the couple get to safety, it takes days for Acadia to get around to calling them to let them know she’s safe. And, there are other things that to me are just bad. For example, when several mercenaries break into the couple’s room at the beginning of the novel, the villains have a pistol to Zak’s head and they sexually leer, fondle and threaten the naked Acadia. She is supposedly scared to death. Yet, when naked Zak must get out of bed at the villains’ command, she starts fixating on his penis and becoming aroused at the memory of the previous night. I’m sorry, but that is SOOO RIDICULOUS.I was surprised by the paranormal element introduced toward the end of the book and am not really into paranormal so that was a little disappointing. And, the ending bothered me. I understand the villain’s monetary motive. But the villain also felt strong hatred and I didn’t get why that was so.In her best books, like this one and Undertow, Adair’s characters are so great and the attraction and chemistry is so well portrayed, the books are a joy to read---even if I sometimes want to say, WTF! to the author.
