After finally getting out of her disastrous relationship, Maya Carmichael has sworn off all bad boys. Sure they’re hot. The attitude? No thanks. But when her car is vandalized while on a night out with her roommate, she realizes her ex is truly sadistic. Her friend insists they lay low for a few days while the cops do their thing. Unfortunately her temporary haven will throw her in the path of another bad boy. Oh, she’s heard stories about her roommate’s brother, Hunter, and he’s just the type she wants to avoid. Until she sees him … and all good intentions fly out of her busted windshield. Hunter Anderson might be the easygoing jokester within the Bang Shift crew—the small Arkansas town’s mechanics and the government’s secret mercenaries—but underneath his lighthearted exterior lurks demons of a past he’d love nothing more than to forget. Working on cars and taking the occasional contracted mission help, but he fears nothing will stop his past from coming back to haunt him. No one has tried penetrating the façade to get to the real person below. No one, until Maya. The attraction is undeniable, but there’s more to Hunter than he can ever let on, and for Maya, this hot distraction makes it easy to forget the real danger she’s in. It has nothing to do with losing her heart to him. When really it has everything to do with just that.

The following is my review (which is the same as on my blog: apublicizedaffair.wordpress.com)Let me be upfront: I loved this book! Mandy Harbin has assembled this group of characters that we see throughout the entire series, and she has made them so easy to want to spend more time with. I already cannot wait to get into future books.I seriously love that this author gets into the story right away. It is a personal pet peeve of mine when an author is writing a shorter story, and then a chapter or so is dedicated to all of the back story. I know that is done for new readers, but it drives me insane. So yay…no pages wasted here!I have read a few series now where you meet overlapping characters and each story tends to have the same formula. Hunter and Maya do not meet the way Brody and Xan do in Book 1. It is an entirely different situation and Hunter’s sister is the catalyst to a lot of this. That may not seem like much, but I admire when an author can change it up and make her characters more versatile. One thing I noticed being different in this story is there isn’t so much focus paid on how the characters look. It is mentioned, but some stories go on and on about every aspect of the characters. I enjoyed that their attraction was more recognized and focused on. There is a scene in the beginning and Maya is having breakfast with Hunter, and she does not want him getting the wrong idea about her. She is not interested in anything to do with him, and she is putting zit cream on her face and just having no shame in looking rough. This scene made me laugh, because I recognized that this is a way that we know the character is attractive and she has self-esteem, without it being this huge sex-pot moment.I respected that the author made Hunter be the character who was thinking of the future, as opposed to the female character always being the one pondering kids, marriage, etc. Hunter is not just seeing Maya, falling head over heels, and immediately thinking of the future with her. He is actually thinking about it realistically after talking to Brody, as we discover that he and Xan are getting married. I felt this was authentic and I found it a refreshing chance to enjoy a male character taking life seriously.Hunter never denies how he feels for Maya. He may not want everyone at work to know, but with her, he doesn’t try to fight it as much as Brody did in Book 1. The reason I point this out is because I think the author shows such a writing strength here. I try hard to not make every blog post sound the same, and it can be challenging. And this is just a blog, not an entire book or series. Hunter has some qualities in common with Maya, but he is still his own person and character.Oh my gosh….the ending. Did NOT see that coming at all. I actually liked that while Maya is apart of the trouble for Hunter, she truly does not know it. She is not deceiving him; she is just in the dark as he is. The author reintroduces us to some of the other characters at the end of the book, which nicely sets up whichever character the author chooses to focus on.I unquestionably recommend this book! (I mean…are you surprised?)

While I did enjoy reading Hunter, it just didn’t pack the same punch as Brody did. I appreciated that Ms. Harbin gets straight to the action in the first chapter because it helped set the stage for the romantic suspense elements. I also liked the use of Hunter’s dream flashbacks and memories as an appropriate vehicle for providing background on his past and explaining his protective attitude over his sister Heather. But once the foundation for the story was laid, it felt like there were a few too many scenes where Ms. Harbin skimmed over what was happening. This failure to develop the scenes fully reduced the intensity level of Hunter. I should point out that I’m not saying that I didn’t enjoy the book, because I did. Rather I felt like something was missing from Hunter that made it not quite as good of a read as Brody was. When Heather’s best friend and roommate gets targeted by a stalker ex, she does what any friend would do if their brother was part of a government-backed black ops organization – she drags her best friend off to another state to ask for help. Fortunately for Maya, Hunter isn’t the only one who has a soft spot for his sister and the men of Bang Shift agree to look into her ex. While they do, Hunter finds himself on babysitting duty with a woman who makes his blood boil and THAT feeling is mutual. Yet despite their instant attraction, neither Hunter nor Maya acted on it in the beginning. Quite the contrary, these two played the avoidance game admirably considering they were stuck together in the same house almost 24/7. We’re around 65% into the book before Hunter and Maya find themselves unable to deny the attraction between them and it was HOT! I’m starting to think The Bang Shift might have another meaning altogether.Even though I felt like the suspense elements weren’t developed as fully as they could have been (especially when compared to Brody), there were still a few twists and turns I didn’t see coming. I was glad that Maya didn’t cave immediately to Hunter’s non-apology apology when the evidence proved her innocent – his accusations were hurtful and his lack of faith in her required more than an “we heard everything” statement to make things right. Thankfully the guys of Bang Shift seem to know how to grovel when they need to and Hunter executed that particular mission successfully. Overall, I enjoyed Hunter, I had just hoped for a bit more. But Ms. Harbin did set things up quite nicely for the next few books in the series and I’m really not sure whose story I hope to see next – Roc’s, Bear’s, or Blade’s. Any one of them works for me and I will be adding it to my reading list as soon as I can.I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.Reviewed by Angela at Crystal's Many Reviewers!

She came from an over-protective family and didn’t get out much so her dating experience is limited. When Jake Oberman starts to pay attention and is persistent with his interest, Maya relents and decides to give this bad boy a chance. It didn’t take her long to see the error of her decision. Jake is controlling, demanding and, well, there’s just something not right about him so she ends it. Jake doesn’t take rejection well. After her car is totally trashed one night, her roommate Heather decides it’s time to get some protection from her brother Hunter until the police get it together and get Jake off the streets.Hunter Anderson had made mistakes in his life. Luckily, he realized a huge mistake in the making before it was too late, or so he hoped. Years later, he has found the Bang Shift, a group of mercenaries for hire, mostly for the government, whose cover is a group of mechanics. Hunter also has his younger sister to worry about since their parents have both died. She’s in college and doesn’t always make the right decisions. So when she comes to him because her roommate’s ex-boyfriend is proving to be obsessed and dangerous, he is less than happy. He wants nothing to do with Maya, she’s the one that got his sister into this mess in the first place. Unfortunately for him, the Bang Shift group feels differently. This book, much like book #1 seems fairly predictable in its plot, but things are not always as they seem. Mandy Harbin has a way of taking a typical plot and twisting it in such a way that it can blow the reader’s mind. Smacking them upside the head with a good portion of “I DID NOT see that coming!” Not to mention the uber sexy alpha men that want no part of a relationship, but fall head over heels for the unexpected female. Maya is not a particularly strong female in my opinion, but man is she funny! Her inner dialog had me literally laughing out loud! There aren’t many explicit sex scenes in this book, but what is, is HOT!! I give this book 4 stars with 3 hands down the pants.
