About the Author Gianna De Salvo is a Cognitive Hypnotherapist, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner and Meditation teacher. Suffering from panic attacks and generalised anxiety disorder as a teenager and into young adulthood, she began exploring ways in which tools and techniques could be used to change thoughts, feelings and perceptions of herself and the world around her in a positive way. Her goal as a complementary therapist is not to dictate to people how to change, but to provide them with the means to empower themselves to tap into their own inner resources. She believes that there are too many therapeutic approaches that overcomplicate basic human issues and that through breaking things down, getting back to the basics, and exploring the evidence behind how our minds work, people will be able to begin to make ground-breaking changes that fit into their already busy lives. She draws from current research that is being generated in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, mindfulness, compassion-focused therapy, meditation and other present-moment awareness techniques in her research and practice, as well as her own personal experience.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. How to avoid depression By Tina Tamman This is a lovely little book that has the potential of changing the reader's life. I have no medical background, but I would certainly recommend it in preference to a medical prescription to anybody who finds life a struggle. It is essentially a teach-yourself handbook on how to achieve contentment in life. And when I say the book is little, its modest size is one of its strengths: it is not a mountain the reader is expected to climb; what the author suggests is all gentle, including the exercises. I particularly like the idea of keeping a thought and feeling diary, but I also enjoyed the chapter on breathing and the unexpected list of random acts of kindness. Recommended even to optimists.

You don’t have to be depressed to benefit from this one--anyone’s life could be improved by reading it. The chapters are short and manageable, and written in laymen’s terms, so that anyone can follow. The lessons are practical and easy to incorporate into your daily life, and the templates are incredibly easy to use. I’m looking at life differently after just a couple weeks…don’t hesitate to pick this one up!

A practical approach to feel better By procrastinator I'm a retired psychologist and I think this book can be a useful adjunct to therapy or, used on its own to help alleviate the symptoms of anxiety and depression. The exercises are practical and the worksheets are very well done. The author not only surveyed and complied references to different techniques but looked at the "why" they are effective. I think this is also useful for those wanting more.
