The author, who shares some traumatic events in her life through the Lewis character, demonstrates that one can survive an almost continual onslaught of physical, sexual and emotional abuse. And, so important to those who have experienced, or are now experiencing any such abuse, her story illustrates the fact that even in times where there seems to be no way out, or no hope of overcoming the emotional fallout, hope and support are within one’s reach. The book does leave me wanting to know more about the evolving thoughts and feelings that helped Lewis overcome each successive trauma. Thankfully, the author does promise more. Leaving Takoma Park is to be the first book in a series that promises to take the reader through “Lewis' journey to freedom from hopeless situations.” This first book does serve to validate, and provide hope for, victims of abuse, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Ferguson This is a fabulous book. Each chapter is a brief but detailed insight into the life of Lewis Bridger - the tragedy and foundation of her life. A voice crying in the wilderness and yet a truthful story of the raw emotion of a traumatic childhood.Eliza Godwin tells a compelling story of a life lived and often dreaded. She tells a story that echoes in the hearts of many in our society and should serve as a means to give voice and courage for those in abusive relationships to speak out. Godwin's book serves as a model for the "voiceless" who don't know the words to say and yet the hope that life can be lived with integrity in the midst of strife without losing your self.I recommend this to all, especially with those in positions of trust, to help them navigate their ministry and compassionate response to those who live in fear and unwarranted embarrassment. I wait with expectation at Godwin's future offerings.

However, I was not quite prepared for my own memories to come flowing out the way they did... I couldn't put the book down until I was finished, and even then, I was looking for more pages that I may have overlooked... This book takes place in the same time I grew up in Takoma Park, and I could relate to everything... everything! The book also helps me to validate all the thoughts and decisions I had made while navigating from a child into an adult... Lewis Bridger, we are in the same club, and it makes me wonder how many more of us there are, and how many who didn't survive... Thank you Eliza Godwin for putting this story on the printed page!
