"Each of us has the opportunity to share our gifts with the world. This is a tricky proposition, though. It takes time to understand one’s gifts and time to understand the world. It’s no surprise that many of us wake up at mid-life and see things differently. After all the doing and being for others in our small circles of existence we realize that we have more and are more. Maybe we always sensed this, but the fog has finally cleared and we can see it. It’s hard to look away." So begins Leah Carey in this collection of personal essays exploring how we overcome self-doubt, find our purpose, and share our talents. Each reflection uses a yoga pose as its foundation, and Carey weaves this metaphor through her frank and wholehearted discussion of conquering fear, gaining clarity, parenting, friendship, loss, love, and vulnerability. In As Simple As Breathing, Carey inspires us to examine the essential elements of our lives in order to become more fully ourselves.

She uses her own fledgling yoga practice to explore universal themes of love, loss, self-doubt and the steps we take to chart our own course in the world. The piece on parenting made me weep, and the one on writing expressed so much clarity about the creative process that I reread it several times. All of the essays have this in common: they survey the mirror of our internal life and our external one - how what's going on inside us is reflected in our outward life. Just as Carey figured out that her inability to touch her toes might be a representation of a limited range of motion in other areas of her life, our challenge is to determine where we are holding back and why. It's easier for me after reading this slender volume, filled with lyrical prose and beautifully written observations of our many postures in life.

Leah has an incredible gift with such elegant use of language. I found my reading experience grounding and soothing: a great vehicle to turn inward and examine your own life.

By Steve Rosenberger You could do worse than to let these essays replace that little voice inside your head... at least temporarily. Yoga-doing writers may find Leah Carey's book to be especially relevant. But you really only need to be able to check the "life" box to enjoy this, learn a few things about yourself, and find some practical inspiration for daily life. Is 'practical inspiration' an oxymoron? No. I could explain that, but... you'll see.I was taking my time with each short chapter, savoring both the writing and the wisdom. It's smart, funny and affecting. I was about 3/4 of the way through when I left my copy on a plane. (I hope it found its way onto someone else's nightstand.) So, here I am, reordering. Because this is the sort of book that you will pull down off the bookshelf again and again.
