When the widowed Miranda Tyrell escapes a dire situation in Kent by accepting a position as governess in Lincolnshire, taking her young son with her, she never dreams she is jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. Instead of peace and safety, Miranda discovers the flat agricultural plains and salt marshes are rife with tales of mysterious fires, gutted animals, and strange sights and sounds in the night. Her new charge is a disturbed nine-year-old known as the Demon Child. In addition, rumors supported by the local curate claim that her employer, a badly scarred veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, is a demon. And those are only the beginnings of her troubles as she attempts to teach two fatherless boys and deal with her wayward heart, which she swore would never love again.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable , well written story. I have already read it more than once. By RegencyMiss A very enjoyable story. It is a Regency Gothic so there is some violence and people being murdered. A woman flees her home and goes to be a governess with her small son. As the woman at the employment bureau says; a widow can have a child, a governess can't. However a place is found where the governess is needed for a boy about the age of her son. All the tropes of a gothic are present but often in an altered form. The heroine is human and amazing. A very enjoyable story worth reading and rereading.

By Kindle Customer Young widow and her son forced to leave their home in Kent seeks employment as a governess at any place that will except them both. She finds it at Fenley Marsh, where the Lord and his son are deemed demons by the surrounding community! The widow decides to form her own opinion and was taken with the scarred Lord and his mischievous son sensing there was more to mysterious sightings and events than met the eye! Obviously an investigation and a lot of love was needed to conquer the two 'demons'!

The story kept me interested and I loved every minute.A widowed woman with her child hiding from a danger from her past. What better way to hide then as a governess. She gets the job and it included her child. But as she becomes more involved with this family she wonders is this place even more dangerous?Loved the story and couldn't put it down.
