The life and achievements of General Omar Nelson Bradley are legendary. During World War II, the five-star general was a key figure in the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. But his private life has always lain just outside the reach of the media. Bradley has long been portrayed as a soft-spoken gentleman. This media-driven stereotype has pushed him aside in America's collective memory, which more readily recalls flamboyant leaders such as Patton, Eisenhower or George C. Marshall.
This book reexamines the prevailing view of Bradley through a reading of unpublished sources and letters, paying special attention to his relationship with his second wife Kitty Buhler and his later years (1951-1981), a period largely ignored by previous research. Bradley's life was far from boring. Behind closed doors were trysts with Hollywood starlets, a penchant for gambling at the horse track and hobnobbing with high-profile stars, writers and political leaders.

It's this attention to detail and verification that sets his book above others, making it a recommendation not for light followers of casual rehash histories, but for dedicated enthusiasts of historical accuracy with a special interest in Omar N. The Greatest 5-Star General By Jennifer Coming out of Missouri's heartland, General Omar Bradley remains a military figurehead whose successes deserve great recognition and the author goes above and beyond to present them in this biography. We get to learn about his humble beginnings, the relationship with his 2 wives over the span of his lifetime, and his unwavering devotion to his family, friends and country.Through it all, tragic and dramatic events surface, such as various illnesses, having to miss his only daughter's wedding. But these were equally matched by his numerous triumphs that span all of WWII. He helped spearhead Operation Cobra, a rehabilitation center for veterans known as the Bulova School, and through it all, you'll be getting a quality history lesson as well as a glimpse into day to day life with Omar and all whom he associated with. There are a number of photographs included featuring Bradley alongside various prestigious notable figures. Some literary criticisms of Bradley's leadership style are included, comparisons to General Patton, and various speculative opinions. An appendix gives the reader further resources to expound upon (and it even features Bradley's second wife's film projects.)

They don't have the luster of Hollywood to make over a dozen films about them or even a television show. Sometimes leading a private life while being a leader and paving your life outside of the spotlight is what makes you remain a true leader without the possibility of the media tearing your name apart for false reasons. This story is the story of how Omar N. Bradley transformed from a regular school teacher into earning his title of General in one of the major wars in our country's history. It also explores the different aspects of history we may not have touched base on in the history books, especially in great detail. This book is for history buffs and war buffs alike. Me, I'm a major history lover and this definitely sated my taste for history. Also the different glimpses into the government during that time. We see and believe what we are told in our history books, but the true person to consult is one who was truly there. I was utterly amazing with the whole story and will be reading it again and again.

I think that I need to start reading about history more from the standpoint of the "regular" guys because the bigger publishing houses seem to only publish things that are half truths or drowning in simply putting the truth in the corner. I liked this book about this regular guy raised normally and made it to become a General. His life that seemed to be untouched by the media and outside of his circles is the part that makes him seem more human. Only now can we get a closer look at this man through his letters and with his own words. I am making this a part of my homeschooling repertoire.
