In 2015, Bob Dylan said, "I learned lyrics and how to write them from listening to folk songs. And I played them, and I met other people that played them, back when nobody was doing it. Sang nothing but these folk songs, and they gave me the code for everything that's fair game, that everything belongs to everyone." In Hear My Sad Story, Richard Polenberg describes the historical events that led to the writing of many famous American folk songs that served as touchstones for generations of American musicians, lyricists, and folklorists.

Those events, which took place from the early nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, often involved tragic occurrences: murders, sometimes resulting from love affairs gone wrong; desperate acts borne out of poverty and unbearable working conditions; and calamities such as railroad crashes, shipwrecks, and natural disasters. All of Polenberg's account of the songs in the book are grounded in historical fact and illuminate the social history of the times. Reading these tales of sorrow, misfortune, and regret puts us in touch with the dark but terribly familiar side of American history.

On Christmas 1895 in St. Louis, an African American man named Lee Shelton, whose nickname was "Stack Lee," shot and killed William Lyons in a dispute over seventy-five cents and a hat. Shelton was sent to prison until 1911, committed another murder upon his release, and died in a prison hospital in 1912. Even during his lifetime, songs were being written about Shelton, and eventually 450 versions of his story would be recorded. As the song—you may know Shelton as Stagolee or Stagger Lee—was shared and adapted, the emotions of the time were preserved, but the fact that the songs described real people, real lives, often fell by the wayside. Polenberg returns us to the men and women who, in song, became legends. The lyrics serve as valuable historical sources, providing important information about what had happened, why, and what it all meant. More important, they reflect the character of American life and the pathos elicited by the musical memory of these common and troubled lives.

Review

"I never knew that 'Railroad Bill,' which I used to sing at summer camp, is about an African American outlaw (real name Morris) who terrorized Alabama in the 1890s. People had good reason to fear Bill, but that fear was also used as an excuse for the blatantly racist treatment of people whose only connection to him seems to have been the color of their skin. ('A number of Negroes have been arrested,' Polenberg quotes an 1895 news report. 'None of them will be permitted to go about for fear that they might sneak some information to Railroad.') Many of Polenberg's stories shed similar light on the uglier aspects of American history, and he tells them well."―Peter Keepnews, New York Times Book Review

"Well researched and packed with fascinating detail, Hear My Sad Story tells more than just the origins of popular folk songs. It tells an unflinching and honest story of America. At times viciously misguided and undoubtedly ugly, the country's history has nevertheless been documented through the lenses of those who witnessed these events and passed them down to subsequent generations. Celebrated in song, the tales outlined through the book’s nearly 300 pages seem poised to continue their grip on the fabric of society as we move further away from the actual events. As history continues to unfold, there are surely those amongst us today whose interpretations of modern events will be relied upon by future songwriters to help make sense of life in our time. It’s the American tradition. "―Jeff Strowe, PopMatters (January 7, 2016)

"Polenberg writes engagingly about the Crescent City at the turn of the last century, as he does about everything he addresses in this entertaining and enlightening book."―Jerome Clark, fRoots (Jan/Feb 2016)

"This thought-provoking study will help us to delve further into the reasons why so many of America's most popular songs have concerned white and male violence while obscuring black agency and side-stepping the terrorism of racism and male supremacy. Perhaps then we can better ask the questions we might have gleaned from these songs all along. Thanks to Richard Polenberg for pulling the covers off and allowing us to think more deeply about our history when we sing the folk songs that tell "my sad story."―Michael K. Honey,Missouri Historical Review(April 2016)

"Hear My Sad Story is an excellent book about folk songs and ballads that cover much of U.S. history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Richard Polenberg draws on a wide range of fascinating primary and secondary sources to tell these stories in rich detail, particularly dealing with legal and political issues."―Ronald D. Cohen, Indiana University Northwest, author of Rainbow Quest: The Folk Music Revival and American Society, 1940–1970

"This fascinating book by one of the very best twentieth-century American historians draws on Richard Polenberg's enduring and continuing interest in folk music. Hear My Sad Story provides useful and illuminating background stories for a host of important American songs. Polenberg's good, crisp, readable prose ensures that anyone who likes folk music will enjoy this musical window onto the patterns of the past."―Allan M. Winkler, Miami University of Ohio, author of "To Everything There Is a Season": Pete Seeger and the Power of Song

"By giving equal weight to historical events and their reinvention as musical myths, Richard Polenberg creates a rich and colorful tapestry of fact and fable. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable and frequently illuminating volume."―Elijah Wald, musician, cultural historian, and coauthor of The Mayor of MacDougal Street

Would Make a Great Addition to a Music Lovers Library By Christine @ Constantly Moving the Bookmark This isn’t just a book about music; it’s a book about history, slavery, racial conflict, murder and love, all presented in the lyrics of songs. Pretty much any part of living life has at one point or another been turned into a ballad or song of some type. Music has been the teller of news and history since before books and newspapers; it’s a long standing tradition. As with the type of books people read or movies they enjoy music is a personal thing. Not everyone enjoys the same kind. When people ask me what kind of music I like my response is “pretty much anything as long as I can understand the lyrics”. Like a good book I enjoy songs that tell a story. When I was growing up there was no such thing as shouting “shotgun” to get the front seat and having control over the radio (or the comfy chair and the television). Whatever my dad was listening to on the radio – that’s what everyone listened to – so I grew up listening to Stompin’ Tom Connors sing “Bud the Spud”, Gordon Lightfoot singing about “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and Red Sovine with his tearjerker “The Teddy Bear Song”. I guess some of it took because I still like listening to ballads. When I saw the tag line for this book “The true tales that inspired “Stagolee”, John Henry” and other traditional American folk songs” it pique my interest. To read the story behind the story sounded interesting. Although there were only a few songs I could claim familiarity with (Tom Dooley, Casey Jones) it did not diminish my enjoyment about hearing the “back story” of the others. Sometimes it was murder, sometimes it was news, a lost love or life’s hardships and sometimes the subject was just an interesting person the balladeer knew. Inspiration can strike from the strangest places.Mr. Polenberg has obviously done his research to give his readers a well-written book about the history of folk songs. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys folk music and the story behind the iconic songs. It would be a nice addition to any music library.* I received this book at no charge via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review *

I was fascinated by it all.The author clearly did extensive research, not just regarding the history of the songs, but also the circumstances surrounding the events. With each song discussed, Polenberg places us right in the midst of these people's lives. We're part of the society in which they live. We feel the struggle to survive, the racism, the sorrow, and the pride. We see the truth behind the people immortalized in song, and how those songs evolved over time.I wish this book had an accompanying soundtrack. While I knew many of the songs, there were some I'd never heard of, and it would be ideal to have them all available to listen to as we read. Polenberg does share snippets of each song's lyrics as we go along. None of the song lyrics are shared in their entirety, which is a bit of a disappointment but also understandable. Many of these sounds went through dozens, if not hundreds, of changes over time.A foreknowledge of these folk songs is absolutely not required in order to enjoy this book. The stories stand on their own, with or without having heard the songs. This book is a profound look at early American culture, and should appeal to readers looking to experience a piece of that history.*I received an ebook copy from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.*

Crimes like those that inspired "Tom Dooley" and "Frankie and Johnny," for instance, would have een long forgotten if they had not become the stuff of folk songs. Jesse James, John Henry and other folk legends have also inspired songs that are still sung today. Any folk enthusiast can attest that there are a lot more sad songs in anyone's song bag than there are happy ones. And that is the point of "Hear My Sad Song." The book is chock full of murders, mining disasters, railroad accidents (remember "Casey Jones?:), outlaws and yes, sad stories. It is not cheerful reading, but it is fascinating, and belongs in the collection of anyone interest in folk music or American popular history.

*Includes pictures *Includes Nash’s quotes about his own life and career *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "In madness, I thought I was the most important person in the world.” – John Nash, Jr. In 2001, the critically acclaimed film A Beautiful Mind introduced millions to John Nash, Jr., one of America’s most important 20th century mathematicians, nearly 50 years after he had won a Nobel prize for his work. Naturally, most viewers of the movie will remember a prodigy suffering from paranoid schizophrenia while overlooking how the man’s innovative studies and works had a major influence on everything from economics to biology, cryptography, artificial intelligence, and political philosophy. The “Nash equilibrium,” a theory he developed when he was still a student in his 20s, has also affected games, military doctrine, and computing. Nash was still doing groundbreaking work and was in the prime of his life when he began demonstrating all kinds of odd behavior, initially alarming his wife Alicia and then stunning the academic world with an incoherent lecture in 1959. As it turned out, he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia, which made him see things and believe in wild conspiracies like a national communist takeover by men wearing red ties. For nearly a decade after the diagnosis, Nash was treated in hospitals with various kinds of medication, including shock therapy, and Nash himself termed his mental health issues as making him go "from scientific rationality of thinking into the delusional thinking characteristic of persons who are psychiatrically diagnosed as 'schizophrenic' or 'paranoid schizophrenic'". Over time, with a better understanding of the problem and treatment, Nash began to recover his mental faculties and get back to work in the last few decades of the 20th century. Fittingly, some of that work included coming up with hypotheses and theories about mental health issues, thereby having an impact on evolutionary psychology, and he was subsequently recognized with a countless number of awards for both his past and present work. Indeed, when he died in a car accident in May 2015 at the age of 86, he was returning from Norway, where he had been given the Abel Prize, awarded by the Norwegian government to outstanding mathematicians. John Nash, Jr.: The Life and Legacy of One of America’s Most Influential Mathematicians chronicles the life and work of Nash and the impact he had on math and economics. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Nash like never before.

Noted for Mathematics May One Day Earn Still Greater Praise for Advocating Improved Mental Health Care By Bill Anderson Length: 48 pages. An excellent buy at $2.99, a steal at "Free" or at "0.00."Of course I've seen the movie and read the book, A Beautiful Mind. But, reading a brief synopsis such as Charles River Editors John Nash, Jr.: The Life and Legacy of One of America's Most Influential Mathematicians is a terrific way to remind oneself of several essential points. His reflections on mental illness, perhaps, was the most valuable insight to be gained from this error-free booklet. Possibly I found this so pertinent, though, because while commuting to and from work I am listening to an excellent nonfiction book by Michael Crichton, Travels. In Travels, Crichton speaks of his early experiences in hospitals, as a medical student, and of the poor treatment. Very similar musings expressed by both Crichton and Nash.Anyway, I found several points of interest and really zipped through this book, learning a bit more about how I can get a handle on the mathematics of mass psychology when trying to understand why people take risks and take shortcuts - (I must note, I am in charge of safety at a defense contractor in North Dakota). One other point I gleaned that I didn't already know was the manner of his death in 2015 and that his wife died also with him.

Maybe we could sit on my door and float on top of those waves together.Lawrence “Viper” Finkle is a well known womanizer and has no intention of changing his ways, settling down, or starting a family. It’s not that he doesn’t like kids, as he is fantastic with his teammates’ kids (when he remembers not to swear around them). His friends watch his actions and accept him as he is. Do they always agree? No, but he is unapologetically himself at all times. In the Cranberry Inn series, he offered some hilarious moments as he adjusted to Kacie and the twins as part of Brody’s life, and I am so glad his story came out here.I’m not including very much plot description as part of this review on purpose. You won’t see the name of the woman who catches his eye, nor am I going to share how they met, or anything about their journey. Why? Because not knowing makes this reading experience so much more emotional. I spent the first part of the book watching his interactions with the women around him wondering which one would cause him to begin breaking his rules, and that mystery made it even better than if I had been waiting for a specific woman to walk through his door.Could we make it work? Could we both let go just enough to make it possible without letting go completely?I loved the way this story built. By the time it was clear who the woman was going to be, I was so emotionally invested in this story that my heart broke with every new scene. Every new detail. I shed plenty of tears over the course of this book, from sadness to happiness. There was so many emotions tied up in this story I couldn’t help but have them spill out of my eyes.I loved getting inside Viper’s head so much more than I could have imagined. There is so much more to his backstory that a simple self-proclaimed perpetual bachelor. His walls and rules were solid, but the right woman slipped right in without him even realizing she had broken through. And getting him to admit she was inside his walls was an even tougher change for him to make.“I have thought about it, and it kills me every single time, because while I can’t imagine my past without him, I don’t want to imagine my future without you.”The journey each of the main characters take is emotional. With promises made, walls erected, and pain to overcome, there are some wrenching moments. I loved every minute of this read, and found myself unable to put it down at several points. I didn’t know I NEEDED Viper’s story until I was finished with the 9 sentence prologue. But from that point on, this story was a necessity.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Oh. My. God. Not what I was expecting for Viper's story, but loved it all the same. Amazing. By Romance Between The Sheets Please note this review may contain spoilers.WOW. Seriously, just WOW!!! This is not how I envisioned Viper’s story playing out. Not at all. I expected Cement Heart to be a really funny and dirty read about a rough and tumble manwhore getting knocked on his arse by some scrap of a woman. Instead I was hit with a story that reduced me to tears too many times to count. It had me crying all the way until the very last paragraph. And I mean that literally. That last paragraph? Ripped. My. Heart. Out. Just thinking about it makes me tear up.I am struggling with writing this review. I want to include spoilers just so I can talk about them and include some beautiful quotes, but then I don’t want you to know what happens because it’ll be so much better when you read it for yourself. Sadly, I’m going with option # 2 which means that as I write this paragraph, I’ve deleted about a quarter of my review already. We were introduced to Viper, Brody’s foul-mouthed friend and teammate, in The Cranberry Inn series. Viper is a manwhore, there’s no doubt about it. He doesn’t do relationships, only one-night stands and as frequently as possible.Life is one big game to him, until one game goes horribly wrong and the consequences are devastating. Wracked with guilt over what happened, he spirals and cuts everyone out of his life. With his place on the team threatened, he’s forced to make some changes. One thing he does is to finally honour a promise he made to his best friend. But when he starts having feelings for a woman he shouldn’t, the guilt just keeps on coming. While this book has quite a lot of sad moments, you’ll also see a good amount of humour and happiness. I loved reading the banter, from between teammates, to Viper and his therapist, to Viper and his grandmother. Viper’s relationship with those people was also amazing to read, especially his grandmother. You really see a different side of him when he’s with her. And she’s a feisty old thing. While I don’t think you need to read The Cranberry Inn series to read this book, I would recommend it because they are really great reads as well. You’ll get to meet Brody and Kacie which are mentioned in this book. You’ll also get a good feel of who Viper is before he grows up.I think the only thing I didn’t like about the book was the cover. And I have a question: What happened to Viper’s piercings???Finally, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to see a pack of Lemonheads without tearing up just a little.

Viper will make you laugh, surprise you, rip your heart out, and make you fall completely in love with him.She did it. Beth Ehemann blew me away, again! I never in a million years would have imagined that Viper could make me cry, much less multiple times. I knew he would make me laugh, I knew he would be a good time, however, I did not expect to cry or fall completely in love with him. When I read Beth’s first book Room for You, I had no expectations. Obviously since it was her first book, I’d never read anything of hers before. I read it on a whim because it called to me. Zero expectations. And she blew me away. I fell in love with Brody and Kacie. Even going into her next two books, though I now had expectations, I didn’t really have doubts because it was the same story and characters that I loved. And she delivered. But Viper was different.Sure, Viper is a character that I got to know in the Cranberry Inn series, but this is his story. This is a different voice, a different path, different characters, and a different story to tell. I was nervous because now I had expectations. And now that I’ve read it? There was not a single reason I should have been nervous.Like I’ve already mentioned, Cement Heart broke my non-cement one. I cried and ached for these characters in a way that completely caught me off guard. I cheered for them to heal but didn’t know how they would. But as this book reminds you, even in the face of great tragedy, life goes on.I loved watching Viper grow, even while staying true to his wild, wicked, foul-mouthed ways. Even when he learns some of life’s most important lessons and “grows up”, he doesn’t lose who he truly is. And that person is a total sweetheart and great guy once you break through his tough exterior.I cannot recommend this book highly enough! I read it in pretty much an entire sitting – a couple of chapters last night before I passed out cold, and the rest today – and I’m equal parts happy and mad at myself. I’m happy because it was a gorgeous story that I loved from the first page, and mad because I didn’t make myself savor it. Now it’s over and I don’t know what to do with myself. When does Beth’s next book come out?!Buy this book. Buy it, buy it, buy it now!

Read Online Ebook Australia's Boldest Experiment: War and Reconstruction in the 1940s, by Stuart Forbes Macintyre

In this landmark book, Stuart Macintyre explains how a country traumatized by World War I, hammered by the Depression and overstretched by World War II became a prosperous, successful and growing society by the 1950s. An extraordinary group of individuals, notably John Curtin, Ben Chifley, Nugget Coombs, John Dedman and Robert Menzies, remade the country, planning its reconstruction against a background of wartime sacrifice and austerity. This book shows the 1940s to be a pivotal decade in Australia. At the height of his powers, Macintyre reminds us that key components of the society we take for granted – work, welfare, health, education, immigration, housing – are not the result of military endeavor but policy, planning, politics and popular resolve.

Being a baby boomer, I did not experience pre-WWII Australia and its failings. That era had left behind the confidence in Australia that had built from Federation to the mid 1920s. What Coombes and his extended team achieved was to formulate a post-Depression plan for a better Australia that rewarded everybody for the sacrifices that had to be made in darkest wartime. We Australians were also well served by the vision that the Labor Government took from Coombes. Not all plans came to fruitition and the Labor Government ran out of puff but the framework stood us in good stead for nudging three decades. I was amazed to find the names of some many important academics and public servants whose impacts were still being felt into the 1980s.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Charvet I was excited when I read the preview for this book, excited when I received it and saw the table of contents, and pleased when I initially thumbed through it (many pictures of some wonderful subjects, although often the newer pictures of cased guns were not taken with enough light to see details), but once I started reading the text, my excitement turned to disappointment. My impression is that the author knows guns, but doesn't know fine guns well enough to write such an ambitious treatise. Sure there is some good information, but nothing new or more complete for double gun aficionados. The same information is available in other better written books. "Fine Shotguns" is full of opinions, strange segues (in the section on pairs and garnitures, the author tells us that his dentist ordered two different pairs of guns, and that had he requested it, the manufacturer would have gladly supplied two sets of three), and constant name-dropping . . . to the point where you are rolling your eyes, and the text gets awkward (the author mentions seven or eight different people by name on page 159).Although many manufacturers are listed as important, the vast majority of the book concentrates on only a small group of products that the author seems devoted to.If you're like me and you just have to buy every book that comes out on double guns, go ahead, there are enough interesting photos of the manufacturing process to justify it, but if you're smarter about your money, take a pass or wait until the price comes down to reflect the quality.

If the reader knows little about the subject then it worth buying as long as it's just considered as a starting point. For someone with a bit more experience it's very disappointing. Many of the illustrations are far too dark. It's so frequent that I think the error could be with the printer rather than the original photographer.

I was excited to buy the book and read it hoping that like in every one of my reads I can learn something new. It started okay but then became more and more mediocre as I progressed. I don't like writing any kind of poor review for any gun book because I know the work the author has to go to write and the sacrifices required but there are a few points that jumped out at me worth mentioning:Photography is not very good, dark pictures, lack detail and in a few cases not germane to the text...Photoshop would have helped immenselyThe author repeats numerous examples and situations throughout the text. It is okay to give an example and then refer to it later but not repeat the same thing...there were at least 5-6 examples of this in my readI'm not sure the chapter flow made sense in terms of subjects and in some cases there was not enough detail or missed topics...for example no mention of Fausti in the O Italia chapter. Though they are not know for their high grade shotguns they are major players in the Italian market and growing respectable over time.I respect Mr. Taylor and I believe he has an immense knowledge of shotguns and their uses and functionality but would like to see him spend a bit more time in organizing and reviewing his work before publishing....still having said what I have I will continue to buy his books and read his writings.

Ebook PDF Quest for Power: European Imperialism and the Making of Chinese Statecraft, by Stephen R. Halsey

China’s history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries has often been framed as a long coda of imperial decline, played out during its last dynasty, the Qing. Quest for Power presents a sweeping reappraisal of this narrative. Stephen Halsey traces the origins of China’s great-power status in the twentieth century to this era of supposed decadence and decay. Threats from European and Japanese imperialism and the growing prospect of war triggered China’s most innovative state-building efforts since the Qing dynasty’s founding in the mid-1600s.

Through a combination of imitation and experimentation, a new form of political organization took root in China between 1850 and 1949 that shared features with modern European governments. Like them, China created a military-fiscal state to ensure security in a hostile international arena. The Qing Empire extended its administrative reach by expanding the bureaucracy and creating a modern police force. It poured funds into the military, commissioning ironclad warships, reorganizing the army, and promoting the development of an armaments industry. State-built telegraph and steamship networks transformed China’s communication and transportation infrastructure. Increasingly, Qing officials described their reformist policies through a new vocabulary of sovereignty―a Western concept that has been a cornerstone of Chinese statecraft ever since. As Halsey shows, the success of the Chinese military-fiscal state after 1850 enabled China to avoid wholesale colonization at the hands of Europe and Japan and laid the foundation for its emergence as a global power in the twentieth century.

Quest for Power: European Imperialism and the Making of Chinese Statecraft, by Stephen R. Halsey

Review This is an outstanding new study of Imperial China’s relationship with the Western powers in the middle of the nineteenth century. Halsey offers surprisingly fresh data, many from the local archives, and shows that the conventional story of China’s meek ‘response’ to the West is extremely one-sided. The book convincingly demonstrates that the Chinese authorities, at the center as well as at the local level, had a rather sophisticated understanding of the international situation and took the initiative to undertake administrative and political reforms to cope with the situation. (Akira Iriye, editor of Global Interdependence)A bold argument about modern Chinese statecraft that finds nineteenth-century China successful in forging a military–fiscal state worthy of comparison with familiar European examples of modern national state formation. In contrast to recent American scholarship seeking to put China into the broader African and Asian world of European colonialism, the author argues the political significance of China not becoming a formal colony, and offers a fresh account and challenging interpretation about the origins of the modern Chinese state. (R. Bin Wong, co-author of Before and Beyond Divergence)

About the Author Stephen R. Halsey is Associate Professor of History at the University of Miami.

Candy with a family curse must find love before it's too late and looses her magic, and Drake looking for work after his bad brake up walks into Candy's town, a town where whitches live, fate will put these two on each others path, the question is will love happen for the two of them, and will they get their HEA. A sweet and well paced read, love the cowboy and witch theme, it has its humor which made it all the more enjoyable to read. I recommend this book to all paranormal lover's.I was given an advanced copy for an un-bias review.

In Saving Faith, David Mislin chronicles the transformative historical moment when Americans began to reimagine their nation as one strengthened by the diverse faiths of its peoples. Between 1875 and 1925, liberal Protestant leaders abandoned religious exclusivism and leveraged their considerable cultural influence to push others to do the same. This reorientation came about as an ever-growing group of Americans found their religious faith under attack on social, intellectual, and political fronts. A new generation of outspoken agnostics assailed the very foundation of belief, while noted intellectuals embraced novel spiritual practices and claimed that Protestant Christianity had outlived its usefulness.

Faced with these grave challenges, Protestant clergy and their allies realized that the successful defense of religion against secularism required a defense of all religious traditions. They affirmed the social value―and ultimately the religious truth―of Catholicism, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. They also came to view doubt and uncertainty as expressions of faith. Ultimately, the reexamination of religious difference paved the way for Protestant elites to reconsider ethnic, racial, and cultural difference. Using the manuscript collections and correspondence of leading American Protestants, as well the institutional records of various churches and religious organizations, Mislin offers insight into the historical constructions of faith and doubt, the interconnected relationship of secularism and pluralism, and the enormous influence of liberal Protestant thought on the political, cultural, and spiritual values of the twentieth-century United States.

Saving Faith: Making Religious Pluralism an American Value at the Dawn of the Secular Age, by David Mislin

Review

"Focusing on mainstream Protestant clergy in the US from the 1870s through the 1930s―and also devoting limited attention to liberal movements among Catholic and Jewish leaders of the time―Mislin (American intellectual and religious history, Temple Univ.) argues persuasively for a dramatic shift in American religious thought in response to urbanization and modern culture."―David Mislin,Choice(March 2016)

"There is plenty to like in this well-written and well-organized book. My favorite chapter was probably the first, in which Mislin discusses changing attitudes towards doubt. Mislin's linking of doubt to the preservation of belief is an astute and unique contribution. Mislin should also be applauded for bringing Catholic and Jewish perspectives into his narrative. Even if liberal Protestants are the main subjects of study, he does not let them have the only word."―Paul Putz, Religion in American History (March 2016)

"Saving Faith is a wonderful book that explores how establishment Protestants wrestled with the emergence of secularism, atheism, agnosticism, and pluralism in nineteenth-century America. David Mislin's focus is predominantly on the clergy and other leaders of the liberal mainline churches, and so he has produced an intellectual history as well as a political and religious history. In weaving together these three closely related but distinct subfields, Mislin has produced a work of remarkable originality and insight."―Andrew Preston, Cambridge University, author of Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and Diplomacy

"Saving Faith offers a fresh reconsideration of liberal Protestant engagement with religious variety at the turn of the twentieth century. Examining leading clergy and intellectuals, David Mislin unearths the roots of the pluralist and ecumenical aspirations that came to full flower after mid-century. His is a subtle depiction of how liberal Protestants captured interreligious commitments out of their growing doubts about the uniqueness of their own Christian faith."―Leigh E. Schmidt, Edward Mallinckrodt Distinguished University Professor, Washington University in St. Louis, author of Restless Souls

"The United States has been a largely Christian nation, but its churchgoers have often invested more energy fighting among themselves―and poaching from other churches―than converting unbelievers. In this sprightly and meticulously researched new book, David Mislin shows how a coterie of liberal Protestants in the late nineteenth century embraced an ecumenical vision that sought to erase sectarian divisions and include Roman Catholics. By World War I even Jews were being courted. Saving Faith is an impressive contribution to the increasingly important history of religious pluralism in America."―Ronald L. Numbers, Hilldale Professor Emeritus of the History of Science and Medicine and of Religious Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, coeditor of Gods in America

"David Mislin's provocative and elegant book rewrites our understanding of religion’s adaptation to modern American life. Mislin highlights the dynamics by which liberal American Protestants came to celebrate rather than lament increasing diversity. The 'Christian doubters,’ pioneers in comparative religions, and leaders of early ecumenical and goodwill movements he chronicles not only set the stage for the wider embrace of pluralism after World War II but also have much to teach us, in yet another moment of great religious conflict, about this vital yet unfinished work."―Matthew S. Hedstrom, University of Virginia, author of The Rise of Liberal Religion

By Carol Bragg A scholarly but very readable look at the role liberal Protestant theologians and ministers played from 1875 to 1930 in laying the groundwork for today's ecumenism and interfaith efforts in the United States. Mislin traces the progression of liberal religious thinking as it encountered the challenges posed by Darwinism, new Biblical scholarship, the development of social and cultural institutions that assumed roles previously played by churches, exposure to world religions, and the alienating effects of the bitter divisions among Protestant sects. In Saving Faith, one sees the roots of current-day councils of churches and organizations like the National Conference of Christians and Jews. As a faith-based activist, I relished this glimpse of the struggles, foibles and perseverance of those who sought to find unity in the diversity of religious thought. This book is an extremely important contribution as we strive to broaden and deepen our understanding of religious pluralism in America.

I am up to 7 dollars and there is no end in sight. ; also she does not let her fans know when next book is coming out and no form of communication from her what's so ever !

I'm so upset that I'm being played with by reading excerpts of a novel every other month. The story is amazing and very interesting but I'm still left in the dark as to wtf is going on and why. I want answers but instead I get more and more bombarded with uncertainty about Noah, Charlotte, this new character Audi James, Professor Worthington, Josh, and the dead girls. This book is one chapter and one chapter only. Its about what does not happen that keeps you intrigued. Its about what you want to happen that keeps you on your toes. And its finally about wtf these questions/weird scenes/scenarios are going to get answered and make sense somehow. Im a junkie and I need my fix.

If it was not for KU, I would have abandoned this series long ago. That being said- this book definitely took a dark turn to the super creepy. Up to this point I could reasonably convince myself Noah really loved Charlotte. If he does now, it's a way that is not very convincing. Also, I was semi-intrigued about the actual "mystery". Now? Good golly, at this pace the series will not end for months. If you have not started reading this- do yourself a favor and wait for either them all to come out in 1 group, but only if at a reasonable price.Another irritation is that nothing in the title shows you the order of the books and with so many, this is a huge pain.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Loved This Moody Novella About Death Finding Love By Sheila M "He was death. Come to take her."THE STORY: Laura Fitzpatrick has lived with death most of her life. She has a heart condition that cannot be treated and has known that she will die. Her condition has caused her family to overly protect her. One day, Laura is out alone when she believes that she will finally die. Instead, she meets a mysterious man named Alex Montmort who Laura feels like she knows even though he is stranger. Alex has indeed known Laura for a long time. He is death and he has never been able to take her from her life. He has asked for two days to spend with her before he ends her life to discover why he has been obsessed with her.OPINION: This is a strange, moody almost gothic type novella. It is definitely a paranormal romance. I really liked how the story balanced on the love/death line. Many of Stuart's heroes are dangerous men who threaten the lives of the heroines. Here, that is also true, but Alex, at every opportunity, attempts to spare Laura. Who would believe that Death is really a good guy?WORTH MENTIONING: Laura's family is really messed up so one might not be surprised that she chooses Death as her mate.FINAL DECISION: I really enjoyed this gothic type paranormal. Readers have to be prepared to suspend disbelief and go with the story. If you do, this one is a little gem.CONNECTED BOOKS: This is a standalone novella.STAR RATING: I give this novella 4.25 stars.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Dark Journey is such an appropriate title. By ww2tt I love Anne Stuart. I have a lot of her earlier books, but haven't seen her books in the bookstore for years. With the purchase of a Kindle, I started looking for books by my favorite authors, and discovered a lot of books I hadn't read. This was one. It slowly unfolds, as Death decides to take a holiday, and falls in love. The plot simply can't describe how Ms. Stuart weaves her magic, the mystery unfolding slowly and tantalizing the characters as well as the reader. Shame on the local bookstores for not stocking Ms. Stuart, but what a delight for me. I have so many "new" Anne Stuart books yet to read.

Bearly Cooking: Pacific Northwest Bears, by Moxie North

About the Author Moxie North lives in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. As an avid reader, Moxie was a big fan of what she calls "mental fanfiction." After reading an amazing book she would keep the story going in her head. Then one day she finally decided she had some stories of her own to tell. Currently, Moxie is working on adding to her paranormal shifter romance series: Pacific Northwest Bears and Pacific Northwest Cougars. She enjoys living in the PNW, listening to the rain, drinking way too much coffee, and watching bad TV when she's not writing.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Hot stack... By Nicole H. Vela Moxie North, although the name doesn't ring any bells, this new bear shifter romance is sexy and sophisticated. Can one English rose find her ideal man? Sophie Carlton, has a desire and talent to cook and the fact her family is insufferable. She is in desperate need of escape and what she finds in the Pacific northwest, is more then she could have imagined. Big hulking men, as in great big bear shifting men! Her boss is gruff, and is just to busy to notice his own shadow. While exploring the new surrounding she is a victim of sabotage! And who makes an abrupt appearance none other the Cage Rochon, he had been looking for and giving up all hope for his mate. Having just hired a new cook he couldn't have been bothered, she was probably some old English woman. When an accident happens and his bear comes to the surface to glance down at the beautiful, curvy, sexy cook...he looses all train of thought and only has mating on the brain. First, will she be okay, God couldn't be so cruel to take away his fated mate. And who has been compromising the business? And for Sophie's part can she accept both man and beast, and to see him in his bear form only has her asking the question...is this real? The author is totally new and of course I love bear shifter romance, the storyline is outstanding and found myself getting lost in the magic of beautiful writing. Gave the book 5 stars, for the character development. The fact that at times I was laughing at the banter and the drama that was unfolding, not to mention the sex was gratifying, it was very well written. Can't wait for more from the author.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It was ok. By Kindle Customer I love a good HEA but I really found this book to be forced and even irritating at times. The storyline sounded very interesting but unfortunately the execution just didn't work for me. I found myself cringing every time there was intimacy between the leads. The woman is recovering from a severe concussion and cracked ribs and the hero is giving her nose kisses, fondling her boobs and dry humping her butt. I thought it was just was too unrealistic (and yes I realize I'm talking about a paranormal romance). Don't even get me started on how many times the word honey was used. "Oh honey, you taste like honey my sweet honey". It was just frustrating for me. I found myself skipping through the sex scenes (the ratio between sex scenes and story was completely disproportionate) and trying to pick up the story again, but I couldn't find much between the sex scenes.I think this author had a wonderful concept and I did enjoy her writing style. Unfortunately this particular story just didn't do it for me.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By Amazon Customer This is the first story I have read by Moxie North, and I really enjoyed it. I loved paranormal stories, but especially about bears. Cage and Sophie are wonderful characters, and their interactions between them and with other characters makes for a truly good story. I am looking forward to reading more by this author, and hope to see more of the Rochon family.
