The author really has a way of bringing you in to her stories. They are heartfelt and touching. There are a lot of Bible verses that the she references that go along perfectly with each story/devotion.This book was written from the heart of the author and she wrote it in such a way that I felt as if I was a friend sharing stories. It was really easy to get into and I enjoyed every page. The author uses questions to get us to really think about things. It is a beautiful book and it really touched me. It is one that I will refer to when I need a little taste of heaven. This book is also very real and I really appreciate the approach she took in writing this book.I highly recommend this book and it gets 5 ***** all the way around from this reviewer.

This is the revised edition of the true story regarding the madness and murders of the notorious 'Black Sisters' - "THEY ARE NOT DEAD!" This has been the belief of many of the children growing up in the Southwestern Virginia town of Christiansburg for over a century. ‘The Black Sisters,’ three murderous sisters dressed perpetually in black clothing, who resided in the small Southern town at the last century’s turn . . . had returned from the grave! The spectral sisters, it has been told, have haunted the local school building, used for high school and middle school, since it was built upon the foundation of the macabre sister’s original abode. When I was growing up (not that long ago), a strong work ethic was one of the most valuable things a child could acquire. I was taught to do any job to the best of my ability, always be kind, courteous and helpful to my coworkers, and always respect my boss. Each task, no matter how menial, was viewed as an opportunity to learn and a stepping stone to something better. Since becoming a small business owner, however, I have noticed a significant decline in our children’s work ethic – in thought, word, and deed. Many of my employees are teenagers, and while I believe they are smart kids with limitless potential, that potential is often hidden behind bad manners, a surly attitude, and a general lack of enthusiasm. This was troubling for many reasons, one of which was the effect on my day-to-day business operations. But what concerned me even more was the damage the lack of strong work ethic is doing to our youth. That’s why I wrote this book – not only to create better, more productive employees, but to help our teens grow into responsible adults, headed for successful careers. That said, the simple lessons in this workbook are not only for their present job, they are laying the groundwork for professional, courteous behavior that will serve kids well throughout their careers. Finally, it will help them to be more efficient and compassionate employers one day.

-- Please note that this is an updated edition of the book previously titled "The Third Scroll". "A terrific epic fantasy ~ magical, compelling, and romantic!" Susan Mallery, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author "It's impressively easy to become immersed in Marton's fantasy world. Readers will find it impossible not to care what happens next..." Kirkus Review An ambitious, vividly imagined epic fantasy. Marton has created a promising and immersive world that is, at the same time, darkly brutal... the splendor of the author's vision cannot be overlooked." RT Book Reviews To escape punishment, Tera, a maiden healer sold to barbarians must hide the truth: she has not yet come into her healing powers. Born into a much gentler world, she struggles to survive in a land of savage warlords and their cruel concubines. When ancient prophecies begin to come to pass, can the healer-slave save the realm and awaken the High Lord’s heart? "I ADORED.. (the hero). From his initial appearance and those gentle words of promise that no harm would come to...(the heroine), to his accepting manner of all that was her, to his tenderness shown when a barrier for which he waited so patiently to fold was finally crossed. He has to be one of my favourite male counterparts I've read in a while. LOVE him." Bookaroo-Ju Review "The writing is just beautiful. It flows sometimes like water. I don't know how else to describe it other than to say i enjoyed how it felt reading it." 5 out of 5 Modokker Book Pick Stars For anyone who enjoyed the fantasy worlds of George Martin's Game of Thrones, C.L. Wilson's Lord of the Fading Lands, Elizabeth Vaughan's Warprize, or the memorably crafted healer heroines in Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear and Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, THE THIRD SCROLL is the next epic adventure to get lost in.

Surprisingly good, much more intricate and complex than I expected By Jean I thought this was some kind of penny romance but was pleasantly surprised to find a complex world infused with vastly different cultures and histories, and a heroine that's resourceful with fears and hopes that are relatable to the reader. There's alot of different people groups but from what I can tell, this world is composed of islands in the middle of an ocean and each island is isolated from the other due to hard storms that make ocean travel dangerous. Tera lives on the island of Dharu and her people, the Shahala, are peaceful, monogamous healers. However, due to poverty and a wretched father, Tera is sold into slavery to the Kadar. The Kadar are warriors ruled by warlords, and the warlords are united under their High Lord. Each warlord has multiple concubines. Slaves can be groomed into concubines if they find favor with the Warlord or remain slaves. As one would expect, the concubines are full of drama, and the meanest, prettiest, and smartest concubine rules the roost. As a healer, Tera has a unique status and earns the friendship of some slaves while rousing the ire of the head concubine. Eventually she is given as a gift to the High Lord, and in his household she learns about the threats of war from the Khergi hordes, the truth about her mother, the secrets of the Dharu island, and the kind of destiny fate has in store for her.Tera has a lot of conflicting priorities: she wants to survive and escape, she also wants to find out what happened to her mother, a gifted healer who willingly came to the Kadar years ago to heal the former High Lord before dying mysteriously, and she wants to heal just like her mother did. Sometimes Tera seems weak or naive, like when she gets tricked/betrayed into slavery, sometimes she seems resourceful like when she uses the beetles to stitch herself up, and sometimes she's a little over-compassionate with her compulsion to heal anyone and everyone. While I like the complexity of her character, sometimes it gets confusing and sometimes I lose interest because the author is doing a lot of telling and no showing.Overall, a book I'd probably reread over and over again because I liked the character development and discovery. The world-building seemed overly complex but it was also interesting. I was pretty impressed with the myriad of people and cultures and beliefs but it was so overwhelming: the Shahala healers, the Kadar warriors, the Selorm tiger lords, the Khergi hordes, the evil Emperor, the First People, the wise and forgotten Seela, the kingdom of Orh, etc. There were some unanswered questions/unclear motives/confusing plot lines but still entertaining.

Fantasy/Romance with solid action, Needs greater sophistication in world-building By Angela All in all, this is a solid effort that is well-written, but for the world-building. I would definitely recommend this story if you like a good romance. Not so much if you're a hardcore fantasy fan.**Spoilers ahead**Likes: The romance between Tera and Batumar. The adventurous plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat.Dislikes: The overwhelming, bulky travel challenges (poison sands, hardstorm oceans, and Gates no one uses except for under special circumstances.) The shallow prophesy/Guardians/ancient race plot lines. (All of which had me rolling my eyes with exasperation.)Character development (wasn't consistant): The main (and 1st half of the book) characters are well developed and wonderful to read. Characters introduced after the half way mark tended to be one-dimensional and under developed though. In depth:Tera has all the standard, stock qualities of a fantasy heroine. She's beautiful, has a firm sense of the moral right, and a stubborn streak. (Great.) She has a goal: to live up to the example of the woman that her mother was. (Admirable.) She's waiting for 'more' than just marriage and children. (How very progressive.) ...and, most importantly, she has a rare spirit healing power that she can trade on. (After all, what good is a fantasy heroine without a mystical ability these days? ;)Of course, through a series of unjust misadventures that are basically 'the will of the spirits', she comes to the attention of the High Lord of Kadar, Batumar. He's our hero of the story, a battle tested warlord with a heart of gold. He's got scars (making him ruggedly attractive, but not handsome - per the romance mandate), a gruff exterior, a wounded heart, and knows the meaning of loyalty. And, bonus!, he's a reformer - working to bring social justice to his war-worshiping society.I really enjoyed the slow-build of their relationship. The only hiccup is this feeling I had that Batumar is 15-20 years older than Tera, which is a little uncomfortable for me (because I get creeped out by a 'could be your father' age difference), but since the feeling isn't confirmed with any explicit age reveals, I looked past it to just enjoy their love story. And it is a very nicely written love story that carries the book through to the end.Marton's character development is also well conceived and not rushed at all with regard to her main characters. She definitely shows their progression in a believable arc. The reader feels compelled to empathize and side with Tera from the very first pages, which is wonderful. I genuinely cared what happened to Tera with each new conflict that arose and was anxious to see each resolution as it was reached. The main flaw in this story, which is exposed almost immediately, is the world-building. There's a lot of 'tell' rather than 'show' here. It starts with the sands made of poisoned minerals that divide the two peoples on the island and the 'hardstorms' which make the surrounding ocean almost impassable, already the topography and navigational challenges become cumbersome in the reader's imagination. (It reminded me a lot of the diametrically opposed lands of The Dark Crystal world - one a perfect, hippie paradise filled with a society that respected all life and did only good and the other a dark city, with a war-loving culture that embraced slavery, power jockeying, and violating those weaker than yourself - separated by a boundary that neither culture crossed.) Obviously, there needed to be some permeability between the two cultures to create the back story for Tera and allow for her to travel to meet her hero, but Marton's initial set up makes navigating this world entirely too awkward and it's a huge imposition to get from one place to the next. It makes it hard to grasp how there is any cross-cultural interaction or commerce at all.And then Marton introduces the world Gates. Magical portals that connect and allow teleportation between the islands. Somehow these Gates have been in use since before these societies existed but there is no regular traffic through the Gates for commerce or visiting other lands... instead, everyone seems to travel by ship over hardstorm ocean waves with the pirates... What??? (Umm, basic point here: Humanity is well-known for taking the path of least resistance!) There's obviously modern travel through the Gates (ex. Lord Karnagh, the diplomat, who came with his tiger to discuss diplomat stuff with Batumar.) It makes absolutely no sense that the Kadar people wouldn't avail themselves of the Gate as a convenient source of rigorous trade with the other lands, avoiding the crazy ocean as much as possible! (Yes, the travel challenges of this world are a little ridiculous to me and I think they could use a comprehensive revisit and revision.)Also, the Guardians... three grandfather figures who have been waiting for Tera across lifetimes. (sigh) Tera had to be a prophesied savior... really? Okay, well then, please give this new twist a little more depth than what's there. The back story on the prophesy is weak. It just is. Edits to flesh it out, with more foreshadowing and greater complexity or gravity wouldn't be amiss. We've got destiny's breeding program going on here... which is sort of gross and immoral when you think about it... a little more work on the mythology would go a long way on evening those scales.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Misleading title By Elly Helcl I expected this book to be a romance of some sort....and it kind of was....But it was completely misleading. When you read a title like "Reluctant Concubine" you EXPECT it to have some steamy scenes. You expect some actual romance. Instead this book is more like a fantasy book with a little romance thrown in as an afterthought. I rated this book as a 2.5 stars for being a YA fantasty (I will not even grace it with the title of being a romance novel because it is NOT) that was enjoyable. I purchased this book however looking for exactly what the title and the description promised but never delivered...Romance, sex scenes, something I wouldn't let my twelve year old read. Enjoyable read if that is the kind of book you are looking for.

Ian Baillie's 'Stuff & Nonsense' is an irreverent look at English kings and queens in comic verse. If you want to know who came where and when in our list of Royals this is a fun way to do it. Did you know that James II's brain is preserved in a bronze urn in Paris? Who was Hugh Despenser and what was his sorry and brutal end? It took a long time for Royals to settle their differences without resorting to the sword or the executioner's axe. And a lot of strife was down to religion. Presented in a modern style, the book comes supplied with references and notes which help the reader solidify each historical figure with fact and anecdote. For children, adults and students of history alike, Stuff and Nonsense is a light-hearted way to learn what stirred in the often dark heart of the realm.

I mean, how much can I actually learn about the history of the British monarchy from a poetry book ? How wrong I was! I had so much fun reading this, I couldn't put it down. In fact, I think I finished it in the better part of two days. The verses were so clever and all of the "stuff" in the footnotes satisfied my appetite for history. I really think this format will be very helpful to high school students needing to brush up on European history. Hats off to Mr. Baillie for creating something unique. I hope he considers creating something in this format for another subject.

I've never really been one for history and my boring history lessons at school were many years ago but... i bought this book having been tipped off that it was worth a read. Having read it from cover to cover, i can't believe how much i have learnt about our Kings and Queens and how much i enjoyed the writing style. The rhyming way in which Mr Baillie has penned his book made it a fun and easy way to remember. Several times i went back half a dozen pages and re-read it, just for fun, having enjoyed it so much. It's written in a clever, fun way. This book definitely should be in schools and any history teachers out there, try it. I guarantee you will have your classroom's full attention!

I learned something of it and immediately ordered a copy.ISBN 9 781784 559236.It kept me fully occupied every evening enjoying not only the clever verse but also reminders of some history I had forgotten. My wife’s curiosity was aroused not infrequently on hearing my chuckles and laughter. It is ‘a history’ of the Kings and Queens of England from a different perspective and could nay should be necessary reading for those at school. The supporting notes are most helpful and enable the reader to differentiate fact from anecdote. The book’s light-hearted approach to history makes it ‘easy’ reading and easy to absorb facts. I hope Ian Baillie commits more such things to printed verse.John K Corner (author),Melbourne,Australia.

This book takes the reader into the realm of the author's personal healing journey, wandering from the Andes Mountains of Peru to various places in her native country. Along the way, she realized that the trauma of childhood sexual abuse and psychologically abusive adult relationships once holding her captive, became her ticket to freedom. It was the wound that catapulted her into a greater sense of passion and purpose. The insights she extracted from a severe illness as well as various spiritual practices and transpersonal experiences reconnected her with her true self and the love that is the essence of all things. She has come to understand that mystical experiences induce a powerful sense of interconnectedness, the keystone of healing and thriving in human life. The author also takes it a step further from the personal to the collective, as she presents the societal implications of abuse and trauma, and the importance of breaking the silence surrounding these issues in order to move forward as a thriving society, creating a more prosperous future. Insights into the nature of the healing journey are presented as the author has observed this process through her personal and professional life as a seeker, coach, and teacher. Freedom from the Story is essentially a journey of spiritual awakening.

She was full of positive energy, a different kind of person than most. When I learned about this book I became interested about her healing journey. Freedom from the Story is more than just a self help book, it provides the reader with spiritual insights, and for us men it is a glimpse into some of the struggles women may face. Paired with my own journey in Peru, her words helped me unbottle my own story and begin healing. I've since recommended the book to my dear little sister.

This is such a loving and non judgemental guide to helping release fear so that we can take steps forward in our lives in a way that feeds our mind, body & soul. Meredith's willingness and courage to share her own journey (the good & the "ugly") is a HUGE hug in book form from what feels like an old friend saying that we are not alone in our journey. Read it! If any one part feels over whelming (there is a multitude of awesome information & suggestions) keep reading... you may be surprised at what comes up later & you may use different parts at different times. This is a treasure!

Padmasambhava—the lotus born—overcame cultural, political, and spiritual obstacles to bring the Buddhist teachings to Tibet from India in the ninth century. Likewise, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche had to conquer religious and cultural opposition to Buddhism—the secret teachings, in particular—to establish his community in North America in the twentieth century.

Taming Untameable Beings: Early Stories of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche with the Pygmies and Other Hippies, by Jim Lowrey

About the Author Jim Lowrey is an “old dog” Trungpa student, who, with the rest of his Pygmy hippie family went to Trungpa Rinpoche’s first public talk in Colorado in 1970 and connected with him immediately. As part of the early baby boom generation, Jim is emblematic of the sixties generation of war protesters, college dropouts, and hippies, who matured as the American born-again organic, locally grown, free-run middle class.

By JimWilton I have read most of the half dozen or more memoirs of students of Chogyam Trungpa R. (Dragon Thunder by Diana Mukpo and Carolyn Gimian; Warrior King of Shambhala by Jeremy Hayward; Diamond Highway by Tony Cape; The Mahasiddha and His Idiot Servant by John Perks; Falling in Love With a Buddha by Frank Berliner). For a long time I have wondered why Chogyam Trungpa has never had a good biographer -- a student who knew him personally and understood his Buddhist teachings, who would take the time to interview others and research original source materials, and who would then write a biography that leaves themselves out of the story -- the kind of account we have of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi in David Chadwick's excellent biography, Crooked Cucumber. With Jim Lowry's beautiful memoir, I have come to accept that we will never have that biography and to realize that maybe that is not a bad thing. It is a hard task for a biographer not to project his views on his subject. Instead, with the range of Trungpa student memoirs that we now have, we have subjective portraits of this enigmatic teacher that present Trungpa R. in the context of the moments in time were meaningful to his students. These are projections of Trungpa R., not reality , but they are moving projections -- filled with love.In the case of Lowry's memoir, he has gone back to original sources -- tapes of talks and conversations with old friends -- to supplement his forty-five year old memories. This is not a memoir that has been dictated into a tape recorder and edited. His chapter presenting memories of six or eight early students, friends of Lowry, describing their first meeting and first meditation instruction from Trungpa R. is alone worth the cost of the book.Lowry is a good story teller and writes from the heart. The result is a well researched account of an incredible inflection point in the introduction of Buddhadharma in North America -- the years between 1970 and 1973 from when Trungpa R. met his first students through his first presentation of Vajrayana teachings in the West. We care about Lowry and his strange band of countercultural drop outs living below the poverty line in rural Colorado. We understand Trungpa's deep love for them and their love in return. I even felt affection for Lowry's father and family who stuck with him through it all, sending money and support, while never understanding his decisions and path.If you love dharma, if you have read Trungpa, R.'s books and want to know what it was like to know him, this is the book to buy.In all, this book is a wonderful and much needed portrait of devotion in the context of Vajrayana teachings that, these days, are increasingly becoming a subject of academic, intellectual study.

Weingrad Jim has done a remarkable job and honest job in not only showing the impact of the Vidyadhara on his life, on our lives, but in recalling that impact and revisiting it right here. It makes me feel that the story, our story, is wondrous, potent and without metaphor. This is without any doubt the best of all the memoirs written about Chogyam Trungpa. He tells his story without calling any particular attention to himself, and gives a glimpse into the world that was available to us from 1970 to 1987. This is not just a story. It is the aria of the voice of man who died in 1987. Yes indeed, we are haunted.

Capturing an amazing moment in time By Amazon Customer This is an intimate and raw first person account about the meeting of a hippie tribe in 1970 and their subsequent experience with Chogyam Trungpa, an iconoclastic Buddhist teacher whose work laid much of the ground for the popularity of meditation today. It sheds new light on Trungpa's pioneering genius both as a teacher and as a cultural innovator, and will be a very interesting read for students of recent "alternative" cultural history, as well as ex-hippies, wannabe hippies and Buddhists alike.

Choice Outstanding TitleWhen on May 15, 1918 a French lieutenant warned Henry Johnson of the 369th to move back because of a possible enemy raid, Johnson reportedly replied: "I'm an American, and I never retreat." The story, even if apocryphal, captures the mythic status of the Harlem Rattlers, the African-American combat unit that grew out of the 15th New York National Guard, who were said to have never lost a man to capture or a foot of ground that had been taken. It also, in its insistence on American identity, points to a truth at the heart of this book—more than fighting to make the world safe for democracy, the black men of the 369th fought to convince America to live up to its democratic promise. It is this aspect of the storied regiment's history—its place within the larger movement of African Americans for full citizenship in the face of virulent racism—that Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War brings to the fore. With sweeping vision, historical precision, and unparalleled research, this book will stand as the definitive study of the 369th. Though discussed in numerous histories and featured in popular culture (most famously the film Stormy Weather and the novel Jazz), the 369th has become more a matter of mythology than grounded, factually accurate history—a situation that authors Jeffrey T. Sammons and John H. Morrow, Jr. set out to right. Their book—which eschews the regiment's famous nickname, the "Harlem Hellfighters," a name never embraced by the unit itself—tells the full story of the self-proclaimed Harlem Rattlers. Combining the "fighting focus" of military history with the insights of social commentary, Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War reveals the centrality of military service and war to the quest for equality as it details the origins, evolution, combat exploits, and postwar struggles of the 369th.The authors take up the internal dynamics of the regiment as well as external pressures, paying particular attention to the environment created by the presence of both black and white officers in the unit. They also explore the role of women—in particular, the Women's Auxiliary of the 369th—as partners in the struggle for full citizenship. From its beginnings in the 15th New York National Guard through its training in the explosive atmosphere in the South, its singular performance in the French army during World War I, and the pathos of postwar adjustment—this book reveals as never before the details of the Harlem Rattlers' experience, the poignant history of some of its heroes, its place in the story of both World War I and the African American campaign for equality—and its full importance in our understanding of American history.

Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War: The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality (Modern War Studies), by Jeffrey T. Sammons, John H. Jr. Morrow

Review "From a literary viewpoint, [the book] is a masterpiece of scholarly research. . . . A pleasurable read. Like a vintage wine, Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War is a reading experience to be savored."―African American Golfer’s Digest"This book is the definitive history of the 369th Regiment in World War I, an outstanding black infantry regiment comprised of 3,000 men led by a white command element. It is the most complete, scholarly, and fully documented account of this famous (and underpublicized) unit, unlikely to be superseded. The authors, both prominent historians, re renowned experts in their fields."―Joint Force Quarterly"A book that readers of military history will cherish and general readers and lovers of history will find informative. It is both a reference book and an important historical narrative that lays the ground for the civil rights movement."―New World Review"Librarians need to make room for Sammons and Morrow’s study because their work delves quite deeply into the background of the regiment’s formation, the culture of the early-20th-century Harlem, and the complex issues surrounding the formation of an African American fighting unit in an era when Jim Crow was a dominant feature of the US and supported by the federal government from its president on down. Essential."―Choice"The authors mesh the military history of the regiment with the social history of the general movement for African-American equality. They analyze nonfiction and fictional works that tell the story of the regiment in such a way as to convey a vision of the African-American struggle for true freedom."―Key Reporter"Belongs on the shelf of any serious student of the 15th/369th Regiment, American involvement in World War I, race relations in the early twentieth century, and African American history."―Journal of Military History"The history of the 369th Infantry Regiment has finally been told. Jeffrey T. Sammons and John H. Morrow, Jr., with this remarkable work of collaborative scholarship and meticulous research, have produced the definitive account of the most famous African American fighting unit in World War I."—Chad Williams, author of Torchbearers of Democracy: African American Soldiers in the World War I Era“A thoroughly researched, carefully argued, and lucidly written history. By examining the challenges faced by this African American regiment on World War battlefields and in the arenas of political power in New York City, Albany, and Washington, D.C., the authors provide important insights not only into the black experience but also into the military history of the nation. This is undoubtedly one of the best books published in recent years on American military history.”—Robert A. Doughty, author of Pyrrhic Victory: French Strategy and Operations in the Great War

About the Author Jeffrey T. Sammons is professor in the Department of History at New York University and the author of Beyond the Ring: The Role of Boxing in American Society. John H. Morrow, Jr., Franklin Professor of History at the University of Georgia, is the author of several books, including The Great War: An Imperial History.

Absorbing World War I Era Acccount of Courageous Black Regiment By Hamilton Fish The authors, both eminent historians, depict the epic struggle to transform a New York State Guard unit composed almost entirely of black soldiers into a one of the most decorated regiments of the United States Army in World War I. Harlem's Rattlers is an absorbing book, a work of deeply important and distinguished scholarship, nuanced in its exploration and handling of the layers and layers of contradictory and incomplete accounts that are the natural character of all history. The pith of this book is the ferocious and unending drama of race, the core narrative that tracks the American experience. Harlem's Rattlers is an engrossing social history, brimming with humor, irony, courage on a grand scale and the small acts of human decency and painful betrayal that are the grist of the wartime narrative. Men skirmish in the legislature, manipulate the media, get trampled in the military bureaucracy, compete ruthlessly for recognition and at every turn the underlying racial dynamic shapes their behavior and deforms the culture. The integration of the armed forces was a focal point of the civil rights cause for the first half of the twentieth century. Sammons and Morrow have given us a panoramic tale, rich in its evocation of the strains of class, ambition, patriotism, bravery and prejudice that run deep in the American story.

Definitive volume on 369th Regiment of WWI that combines thorough scholarship with compelling tribute By Shannon Powers There are perhaps few WWI regiments more mythologized than the subject of this comprehensive volume, the 369th, also known as Harlem’s Rattlers. As Sammons and Morrow delve into the history of this “undaunted” group of black soldiers, they not only present landmark historical scholarship on WWI, race, and politics in America, but also do the important work of bringing the voices of the men of the 369th themselves to the forefront of their own history. The title, for instance, rejects the more widely known nickname “Harlem Hellfighters” in favor of the one preferred by the soldiers themselves. An especially compelling detail was an appendix with the full names of the regiment’s fallen, a gesture by the authors that demonstrates their sincere respect for the men of the 369th.Ultimately, Sammons and Morrow are concerned with the idea of military service as a path to freedom and equality for blacks in the United States. With engaging presentation and thorough research, the authors delve into this 20th century struggle – complete with its acts of heroism, bitter political conflicts, and the frustrations of bureaucracy – and draw from a fascinating array of official documents, letters, personal accounts, and other interesting sources. The result is both a vivid, personal portrayal of the bravery and determination of the 369th on the battlefield and the struggle they faced as black veterans upon return in a rapidly changing America.Bolstered by both unparalleled historical scholarship on the regiment and a commitment to the honoring of its memory, Harlem’s Rattlers is the definitive guide to the 369th, a book for both serious historians and any reader who appreciates the human capacity for courage in the face of war and adversity.

Nofi A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com'Although the 369th Infantry has been the subject of several books over the years, Profs. Sammons (NYU) and Morrow (Georgia) have drawn upon resources not available to earlier authors, making their book a very comprehensive account. They cover in three chapters the origins of the regiment, a matter of remarkably complex “Byzantine politics.” There follow chapters on the formation, recruiting, and training of the new regiment, largely opposed by the Army and the New York National Guard, including arguments over the commissioning of black officers, which remained contentious throughout the Great War. Mobilization for war service and the regiment’s movement to France, being among the first American units to arrive there, are dealt with in three chapters. In France, the regiment ended up being “lent” to the French for the duration. The 369th spent more days at the Front than any other American unit, taking part in a number of major actions and becoming the first American troops to reach the Rhine, events covered in five chapters, which include several excellent battle pieces. There follow chapters on the regiment’s famous homecoming parade, the postwar slighting of its record and the struggle to maintain its existence in the postwar National Guard and to secure a black commanding officer. In a short coda, the authors address the fates of Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts, who went from being “Our Colored Heroes” to total obscurity, a product of the institutional racism that constantly dogged the regiment and its men. As they tell the story of the 369th, the authors often give us short profiles of individual soldiers, black and white, French as well as American, who played parts in the history of the regiment, and they tie its story into that of the larger struggle for black civil rights in America, particularly on the Home Front during the war. Although marred by a lack of maps, which would have helped greatly to follow the regiment’s movements and fights, this is an outstanding work.'For the full review, see StrategyPage.Com

Hood (Hoode?) all my life and seen all the movies and TV series too. Errol Flynn is still the best! But there has been this thought that maybe he did not exist and it was just some imagination from medieval writers and it got bigger and bigger over the years.Mark Olly is an historian and archaeologist and has come up with some really interesting facts in his book. I've long thought Robyn Hoode existed only in Sherwood Forest but Mark shows this is not so. He did operate in a lot of other places. Marian also features as do the politics of the day. This was a well researched book which eased any anxiety I had about Robyn Hoode not existing. This is worthwhile reading, particularly if you're a fan of the Hood (or Hoode).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. this is not a book, it is a listing ... By linda this is not a book, it is a listing of her books. Which is want I wanted. My only problem with it is that it didn't list the two main characters...so that you can find one that you want. I had read the story about Jamie Taggert and Hyacynth , and wanted to read the one about Kane and Cale, his parents...I still haven't found it, but will keep looking elsewhere. Oh and you should think about the questions you ask...just because it is a book doesn't mean those questions are applicable.
