Ian Baillie's 'Stuff & Nonsense' is an irreverent look at English kings and queens in comic verse. If you want to know who came where and when in our list of Royals this is a fun way to do it. Did you know that James II's brain is preserved in a bronze urn in Paris? Who was Hugh Despenser and what was his sorry and brutal end? It took a long time for Royals to settle their differences without resorting to the sword or the executioner's axe. And a lot of strife was down to religion. Presented in a modern style, the book comes supplied with references and notes which help the reader solidify each historical figure with fact and anecdote. For children, adults and students of history alike, Stuff and Nonsense is a light-hearted way to learn what stirred in the often dark heart of the realm.

I mean, how much can I actually learn about the history of the British monarchy from a poetry book ? How wrong I was! I had so much fun reading this, I couldn't put it down. In fact, I think I finished it in the better part of two days. The verses were so clever and all of the "stuff" in the footnotes satisfied my appetite for history. I really think this format will be very helpful to high school students needing to brush up on European history. Hats off to Mr. Baillie for creating something unique. I hope he considers creating something in this format for another subject.

I've never really been one for history and my boring history lessons at school were many years ago but... i bought this book having been tipped off that it was worth a read. Having read it from cover to cover, i can't believe how much i have learnt about our Kings and Queens and how much i enjoyed the writing style. The rhyming way in which Mr Baillie has penned his book made it a fun and easy way to remember. Several times i went back half a dozen pages and re-read it, just for fun, having enjoyed it so much. It's written in a clever, fun way. This book definitely should be in schools and any history teachers out there, try it. I guarantee you will have your classroom's full attention!

I learned something of it and immediately ordered a copy.ISBN 9 781784 559236.It kept me fully occupied every evening enjoying not only the clever verse but also reminders of some history I had forgotten. My wife’s curiosity was aroused not infrequently on hearing my chuckles and laughter. It is ‘a history’ of the Kings and Queens of England from a different perspective and could nay should be necessary reading for those at school. The supporting notes are most helpful and enable the reader to differentiate fact from anecdote. The book’s light-hearted approach to history makes it ‘easy’ reading and easy to absorb facts. I hope Ian Baillie commits more such things to printed verse.John K Corner (author),Melbourne,Australia.
