3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Garden of History By Klemens Metternich What I look for in a history book are reliable facts, clear analysis, and writing that keeps my interest. In Steven Carol’s new book, Understanding The Dangerous And Volatile Middle East, I found all three…and dare I add, “As usual.” Dr. Carol’s books have been filled with unassailable facts backed up by solid references and enough bibliography to open a small library. This latest book is much larger than the earlier ones because it has more of everything—one stop shopping, one could say, for everything about the myriad of the Middle East’s seemingly unsolvable problems. The excellent use of chronological charts to display the flow of events saves hours of reading, while the increased detail and enhanced text of the 78 full page maps allows for a better and clearer geographical perspective. I must also point out that Dr. Carol also included an extensive glossary of abbreviations used as well as many technical terms in Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew. From an actual explanation of Honor Killing and a scholar’s definition of “Muslim fundamentalist” to the details of the many wars, battles, treaties, and agreements spanning centuries, the reader finds himself or herself wending through the bizarre world of Middle East conflagrations now placed in proper perspective and clearly explained: A garden of history! I always enjoy reading history whenever I can understand right away what was going on and can follow events and how these events, caused by earlier problems, play out and exacerbate the earlier problems, causing new ones. At the conclusion of Dr. Carol’s new book, I feel I now know where we are in the Middle East, but even better, I also know how we got there. It is a great book with wonderful analysis, and remarkable writing.

By Andy McKinney The sub title of 'Understanding the Volatile and Dangerous Middle East" reads 'A Comprehensive Analysis'. No one has written a more accurate, more clear, more concise addition to a book title. Dr. Steve Carol has written a gigantic book, just short of one thousand pages. It is encyclopedic in it's scope. Dr. Carol has give us over 70 maps, some going all the way back to the Kingdom of David. He gives us maps to help us understand the ancient history of the Mid East from Alexander to the Maccabee revolt. Comprehensive? You bet. We all know of the terrible attack on the US diplomatic station in Benghazi Libya in 2012. Did you know that dozens of other diplomatic missions of various nations have been attacked? Dr. Carol lists them and explains how it happens that in tightly controlled dictatorships 'spontaneous mobs' seem to suddenly pop up out of no where. Author Carol presents the reader with a sound basis to 'Understanding the Volatile and Dangerous Middle East'. He gives us a deep understanding of the history of the region, of the geography of the area and even the demographics of the Middle East. The demographics of the region in particular do not get proper attention elsewhere but we cannot understand what happens in the Middle East without a knowledge of who the players are. Relationships among the peoples there, not to say enmities among them, go back a very long ways. We in America do not properly understand these relationships and enmities nearly well enough. Even the brilliant Condoleezza Rice suggested that the Suni's and Shiah's in Iraq needed to 'get over' their differences. Staggering ignorance shown in that comment. But readers will never make a similar mistake if they have a copy of "Understanding the Volatile and Dangerous Middle East" at hand. The size and scope of this work actually defies any normal book review. It is just too big. Dr. Steven Carol has earned a Phd. in history. He has also authored other, normal sized, books. We often encounter academic authors who produce prose so dense as to be impenetrable and inaccessible. No so with Dr. Carol. He writes with a strong hand. He sticks to the point of a particular subject. He presents huge volume of information with clarity and still maintains the interest and focus of the reader. His writing style alone is a worthy achievement. But the main thing here is the information. You will never find this volume of data collected together in one place. If you follow the events in the Middle East, buy this book. If you have any hope of understanding the complex interactions among the vast array of actors in the Middle East, buy this book. If you read or write on this subject for professional purposes, you must absolutely have this book on your desk top. Nothing remotely as comprehensive as this book exists.

Leeper This is a truly comprehensive, readable reference on the history, geography, and politics of the Middle East. It covers the entire region and the full timeline beginning around 1400 BCE (Israel's earliest days) with the heaviest emphasis on modern times, right up through 2015. There is excellent coverage, for example, of all the wars involving Israel.Some history books can be a real chore to read, but Dr. Carol has taught high-school- through college-level courses, and he knows how to write for those readers, not just his fellow researchers. Any student or author preparing a term paper, article, presentation, or book on the Middle East would do well have this text as a prime source. So would anyone traveling to the Middle East on business or diplomacy. The bibliography, end notes, timeline tables, and maps are thorough.Dr. Carol built his book around 75 "Basic Principles." These are expressed in one-liners like "In the Middle East, weakness guarantees aggression", "The goal of pan-Arab unity has been largely illusory, akin to a mirage in the desert", and "International guarantees, especially when applied to the Middle East, are often broken and do not provide security." Each basic principle has a section of text, maps, and tables that support it in detail, all with extensive references. One good way for the casual reader to "dive in" is to choose one of the 75 principles from the table at the front of the book and then turn to the accompanying text. Of course the book is fully indexed, which is another way to explore a topic of interest.The paperback version of this book is big(!). It's 11 x 8.5 x 2 inches (HWD). That makes it easy to read, with print large enough to avoid fatigue, but it also means the book is best used on a table. I bought both the paperback and Kindle versions. The Kindle version is more difficult to "flip though" than the book, and the maps are smaller, but of course the Kindle version is more portable, it is easy to search for key words and names, and if your Kindle is so equipped, you can "click" on the many URLs in the end notes and bibliography, taking you to more material on the internet. You can also "highlight" portions of the text and add your own bookmarks and notes.I'm a general reader myself, and I occasionally write short articles on Israel and Middle East. The thousands of names, places, and historical events in the Middle East are bewildering, but I now have one readable, ready reference to help me sort it all out!

About the Author Elizabeth Cassidy West is the university archivist for the University of South Carolina. Originally intended to read a few pages to see if I would like it, but got enchanted and finished it in one sitting.I like a read where plot, characters and story build and evolve smoothly, and in a very natural way. This book did that. The characters, and their actions and dialog were believable and realistic. Editing was superb!There was only one sexual encounter, but it was an awesome 40% of the book. It was very descriptive, but in a manner that was exquisite and satisfying, not lewd, crude or callous. It built excitement and captivatingly flowed - unlike so many books that just have sex scenes.SPOILER: Only reason for the 4-star rating was the ending. Guess the author felt an abrupt cliffhanger was needed to entice purchase of more books, but for me it shattered the mood and the flow that had been so enjoyable.

Abusive not BDSM By Amazon Customer I tried so hard to stomach this book, but the Dom/sub relationship felt more like being a witness to an act of abuse. He got off on causing her the most pain possible without regard for her pleasure and he kept telling her she liked it, even though the whole time she seemed to hate it. I will not be reading the rest of this series. Love Ms. Jordan's works but this one goes directly to the trash.

Brina is incredible at what she does; until she finds her newest subject and probably most irresistible job ever. Neither Luke nor Brina got to chose where they are. When these two meet, it is explosive. They have an incredibly steamy and hot relationship.Cassia Leo did a wonderful job writing Luke. I loved how warm and caring he was and how he could show people his emotions and honestly not give a damn.I loved Brina. She was great. She had to deal with some major heartbreaking tragedies. Through all this she managed to stay as strong as possible. I enjoyed her POV and being able to feel as though I was right there with her feeling all of these things.I found myself never wanting to put this book down. Cassia Leo has delivered an amazing read with loads of steamy scenes (which I love). I loved how there is POV's from both of the characters so you could get a sense of what they were each feeling.This book is a must read and should most definitely be number one on your list.

Luke the millionaire trying to protect his business and his heart. However when he finally finds love he doesn't know how to react. He wants to love but he also knows that she is trying to scam him. What does he do? Well, I have personally never had so many twists and turns in a romance novel. The characters come to life on the pages and I was in tears more than once. Do they ever find their way to each other and to true love? Well you have to read it to find out. Just know that the journey they take is filled heartbreak and secrets. This is a must read.

I am, for instance, a white straight married male Protestant clergyman living in the United States. That’s not my entire identity, but these are key markers. My experiences in life will be different from a Korean American clergywoman. One major difference is that society is more likely to accept my identity as a member of the clergy than a Korean woman. Indeed, to be a woman in a Korean context is to flout expectations, even more so than for a white woman. To hear stories of call and ministry is illuminating, if we’re willing to listen closely.Here I Am is a collection of stories. They are enlightening, though they’re not always happy stories. In many cases these are stories of survival and perseverance in the face of difficult cultural challenges. To be Korean in America presents one set of challenges. To be a woman called to ministry in a Korean context presents another set of challenges. I was invited to read these stories by the editor, Grace Ji-Sun Kim, whose book Embracing the Other I had recently reviewed. She asked her publisher to send me a copy, for which I’m thankful. So, I want to thank Grace for entrusting these stories to my care. Having the opportunity to read them has been an enriching experience.The book is a collection of essays written by Korean American Presbyterian clergywomen. The stories are personal and theological. Some are homiletical. Indeed, the third section of the book is comprised of sermons, which in themselves are revealing of identity and call. Throughout the book the contributors explore the dynamics of being women and Korean. They face the reality that the broader society sees them as different, even foreign. At the same time, they face the challenge of a highly patriarchal Korean society. One element of the story that I had not even thought of concerned the role of Confucianism in Korean culture. It’s not Confucianism as a religion, but as a worldview. What I discovered from these essays is that Korean Christians find it as difficult to disentangle Christianity from Confucianism as European American Christians find it difficult to separate out the European cultural elements that have been embedded in Western Christianity. With these cultural issues in mind, I discovered that the hurdles placed before these women are exceedingly high. Much higher than hurdle I may have faced along the way toward my own ordination. Even after ordination, the road doesn’t always get easier.Even as the Korean context presents difficulties, so do the American cultural dynamics. Since being white is often equated with being American, a person of color, especially a person of Asian descent, will often be seen as the other. To be Korean and American means dealing stereotype. Indeed, it means facing the reality that one will be perceived as a perpetual foreigner. People will be surprised at how well you speak English, even though English might be your primary language. These challenges are dealt with in some detail by Grace Kim in her chapter in the book. She writes that "minorities are always asked to define themselves or are identified with some form of adjective, while white, European Americans are never asked to define themselves" (p. 52). Other chapters deal with what might think of as the mundane. Mihee Kim-Kort, for instance, speaks of the relationship of parenthood to vocational ministry. Others tell of specific ministries to which they’ve been called, including a most intriguing ministry with the homeless.The writers of these stories are members of the “Korean American Presbyterian Clergywomen,” an association of women clergy for support and encouragement. The story of this organization is told by Unzu Lee. The organization is small—there are only about ninety ordained Korean-American Presbyterian Clergywomen. Hopefully in time these numbers will climb!Memoirs, theological reflections, prophetic preaching—all are to found in this collection of essays. I may not be Korean or a woman, but I found these essays to be instructive and enlightening. I heard in the words of these women a call to embrace the other. I heard a call to allow these encounters to transform me as a pastor and as a Christian. Yes, these are Kairos stories offered to the church that the church might be transformed.

"Here I Am" provides us with inspirational stories, theology, and sermons of Korean American clergywomen who behold the grace behind their privileged and perilous calls to equip themselves to serve God’s people on the “American” corner of God’s vineyard. It is an excellent book for seminarians, priests, pastors, and those engaging in cross-cultural ministries.

About the Author Lynn Tincher, Creator/Writer, Executive Producer for Afterthoughts Film Lynn Tincher is very excited that her first book, Afterthoughts, was picked up by two LA Producers, Kilted Pictures and Dancing Forward Productions and will be filmed as a movie in Louisville. Lynn was born in La Grange, Kentucky and grew up in Goshen. One of her fondest memories is when her English class short story was read in front of the students at Oldham County High School. Since then, her love for writing blossomed. She studied Theater Arts in College in hopes of becoming a Drama/English teacher, and had several articles published in local newspapers and travel brochures. In 2007, she finally wrote a novel. After years of frustration with the publishing industry, several rejection letters, and quite a few headaches, a local publishing company, Blackwyrm Fiction, published Lynn’s first novel, ‘Afterthoughts’. When she signed the contract, it landed her the center page for a story in Leo Weekly. Since then, Blackwyrm released her second novel, ‘Left in the Dark’, and then the third, ‘Buried Deep’ was published by Annywyn Publicity. Her fourth novel, ‘Where There is Light’ will be released later this year. She is actively involved in Greater Louisville Inc. and was a Champion Member of the Oldham County Chamber of Commerce. She recently appeared in the Louisville Courier-Journal, RoundAbout and the Oldham Era. Lynn was also the Red Cap Ambassador for the American Heart Association and advocates for the research of Brugada Syndrome, a rare genetic heart disease also known as Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome (SADS) that both Lynn and her mother have been diagnosed with.

I always thought (and still do, to some degree) that if I wasn’t busy doing something, I was not fulfilling my life’s calling. As a single parent, most times I try to be the mother and the father, especially to my son. This book has opened my eyes to a lot of what my body is already telling me “Slow down, its ok, you can’t do it all”!!!!! Much too often to I feel overwhelmed, downtrodden and defeated. My children’s success ALWAYS overshadowed my wants, needs and dreams. In reality, when I became a mother, I thought I didn’t deserve to be anything else but that. My dreams, my plans and my passions got pushed to the side. I thought I couldn’t have it all. THIS BOOK HAS TAUGHT ME THE EXACT OPPOSITE. Reading “You’re More Than Their Mother: RE-claim, RE-align and RE-balance Your Life” has given me clearer insight on just who I was created to be and how I can achieve it! I now know that it is ok to say “NO or Not now”, it is ok to say “Me first”, it is ok to “Want more and not let my children’s dreams or goals” interfere with my dreams and goals. I am now confident that I CAN have it all, and IT CAN work, and IT WILL work. I am finally able to let go of the guilt of not always putting my children first and concentrate on me. There is still time to RE-claim, RE-align and RE-balance my life, but it all starts with ME!! Thank you Sherlyn for being the instrument God has placed in this time and space to proclaim that mothers do matter outside of what goes on inside of the family realm. My RE-formation starts TODAY!

I love Desired by the Viking Pack just as much, if not more, then Desired by The Pack!!!!! I can't wait for the next book in Desired by The Viking Pack! Please hurry with the next one! I don't normally read books that are chopped into pieces, mini series, like these are. I'm normally into novels so I can read the whole story in one siting or I'm sitting on pins and needles waiting for the next part of the series. For this one I will wait for it. I loved it.

By Aschlie Brake - The Piggy has Flown Books I love Emma's writing ability! She just draws me into her stories, and I just love that I can't put them down, the only down side is that they are short. So I will read right through it before I can go to sleep, and then pooy! I have to wait for the next segment in the story.I love the dynamic pull that Cleo, Jesse and Luka have with each other. This story is so juicy and ripe that you will need to fan yourself while reading it! We need more of Fin, it is obvious that he has his own dynamic with Cleo too, but since he is still healing he isn't prevalent in the story.As with the last two episodes with Desired by the Viking Pack, the Warrior's of Valhalla want Cleo for their mate, especially Jesse and Luka, but is Cleo ready to let these men into her heart? She has found that she can't resist Luka and he will always be there for her, even if he has to re-scent her at each time he is around her. Who wouldn't want to have this ginger beauty rubbing up against you?!Jesse was an enigma to Cleo, how can he read her so well? Know what her needs are before she expresses herself?! He is so complex, and has so much hidden that Cleo is restless to know more; but Jesse needs her submission for opening up to her. Can Cleo safely let her guard down around this hunky werewolf? Can Cleo see herself being a pack mate to these hotties, and what about Fin. He is searching for his sister Siri. He is connected with her spirituality. He senses Lula and Jesse's sexual frustration with the healer. He knows that there are big complications in this match. He is so busy with his thoughts he fails to notice the enemy before it is upon him. Ingar a rogue wolf shifter attacked Fin. Luka and Jesse sensed the attack ran to the Alpha. Cleo the healer was right behind them. She renders healing assistance but his wounds were miner and his physical condition didn't match his injuries. Luka and Jesse were tracking the enemy when they discover that Soren was also there. It appeared that he was dragging Ingar. Soren was not part of the attack. Ingar is defending his attack because of the healer. Stating she committed crimes and she should be punished. It shows that the healer has a past.

This review is entirely spoiler free as the story of Coda goes, but may reference aspects of the prior books in the series.Amongst the grit and the slick shimmer of the City of Angels a struggling musician met a successful dominant man. Their journey was not simple, not a straight shot to a happily ever after, it was traffic jam on the 405 it was hugging the curves on Mulholland Drive.In the weeks and months that follow the departure of the suffocating walls of Sequoia, Monica and Jonathan have to navigate the future that was shoved into their hands. A future that was nothing like the one they imagined they’d be facing. Legs spread.And those times when I had to pause, that is when it would happen.The tightness.The burn.Tears that came with the joys and the devastation.This book affected me. I felt their love, grief, fear and hope as if it were my own. I can’t recall a time prior to this while reading that a scene that was one simply of hope, sunshine and happiness bringing me to tears. That is a gift that has been bestowed upon this author. An ability to draw out every bit of emotion from the reader with the use of her words.This was not an ending to a love story. This is just one more step of a beginning. A no-longer struggling musician and her King. A man that had every success he could want and still was empty until he found his songbird. Nine letters that were crippling.The unspoken way that Jonathan’s fears showed, even when he was in control. A thought that slipped through the sentences only to resurface again wrapped up in a red scarf. And that fleeting thought? Yeah, I got it. I paused at the period. I felt the impact of those lines. I saw the fear in that moment. I felt it like it was my own.The struggle Jonathan faced with his control and fear. The battle that Monica had over grieving for her loss. The gentle man she loved but missing the man who loved her with such power that it left her bruised.“I own you.I own your filthy mouth. I own your dirty mind.When you get wet thinking about f******. It’s mine.Every drop from you. I own every thought.You are my property.”At first, when Christine had made it known that eventually we’d get this story I was excited. I wanted this conclusion. I needed it after Sing. I was felt like I was ready for the future. The Capo. The hot-mess-that-is-Fiona. The stories that would come from the tangle of red headed siblings. New adventures, with new characters, new stories. But as I finish Coda I find myself unwilling to sever the ties, even knowing that it is time. And I’m torn on whether or not I want every detail of what devastation could linger on the fringe for these two or if I will just hold onto the hope that we are left with.The peace in the moment.Life without the fear of death.I would think by now that I’d be used to the impact this author has on me and just expect to be left in complete and utter awe. But it just doesn’t work that way. I don’t want it to. I don’t want to get comfortable and just come to expect that it’s going to be brilliant. I want to forget it, I want no memory of how amazing I know it’s going to be, because I want to never lose this feeling by becoming numb to it. I don’t know if there are any more ways to express how talented I think this author is without repeating what I’ve said in other reviews. But this ability and talent is a gift, one that I am honored she shared with all of us. This series is so beyond a romance or the box of erotica that it is placed in.It is raw emotion, it is beauty that is transformed into words and structured into sentences.I felt every single word of this story so deeply. I fell in love with a man who offered honesty, his body and nothing else in the backseat of a Bentley, with a woman that was may have been made up of flesh and bone, but was built of steel. And through this journey I got to meet a woman of grace, a woman that has been nothing but humble in her achievements and a woman that I truly hope knows with certainty that what she creates is worthy of the praise. It does not work as a standalone and it is necessary to have read the previous books in the series and my review can be considered to contain spoilers for book 7, Sing.I can recall way back in early 2013 picking out a new book on Amazon just because I liked the cover. It was by an author I’d never heard of, there were no reviews but the blurb appealed to me and it wasn’t very expensive so I one-clicked and went off to curl up on the sofa not really knowing what to expect. That book was Beg, the author CD Reiss, and the rest, as they say, is history.As I began to read, I realised that I’d stumbled on something very special and was thrilled and I knew that this was going to be big. Since then, CD Reiss has deservedly grown in popularity and is now a best-selling author. As a reader, she challenges me, she pushes my boundaries, enthrals and captivates me. She evokes real emotion in me as her incredible fictional world transcends the written world and lives vividly in my imagination. As an author, she’s definitely colouring outside the lines.Embarking on Coda, my expectation s are completely different from when I first picked out Beg and it’s so good to go back and reconnect with Monica and Jonathan, his Goddess and the man who cheated death. How can the dynamics of their relationship stay they way they were after that brush with catastrophe? Simple answer – of course they can’t and so we embark on the dazzling voyage that is Coda as we watch Monica and Jonathan try to piece it all back together.Monica is still dazed, functioning and competent, but emotionally stunned after coming so close to losing Jonathan and still reeling from what she almost did to keep him. Jonathan, for his part, is mistrustful of his new heart and is struggling to come to terms with his second chance. They’re a couple treading water, drowning in doubt and worry. Jonathan is a ticking time bomb and they both know it. He wants children, a legacy, and she knows what it’s like to grow up without a Father. They’re both suffering from a bad dose of PTSD and this is playing havoc with their D/s dynamic and Coda follows the story of them trying to get all of this, which they both need and crave badly, back on track.I confess I read in abject fear, gripped by a strong sense of anxiety, really not knowing how this was all going to end – after all Jonathan is a man living on borrowed time with a borrowed heart and I didn't doubt for a second that CD Reiss could strike him down with her pen. She’s shocked me badly before in this series and I was terrified at what the outcome of all this would be. It often felt like disaster was looming large and yet hidden just over the horizon. Of course, I’m not going to tell you what happens here – you will need to read to find out!Coda is a wonderful read – it’s as fresh and perverse as ever, an entrancingly erotic bedtime story to stalk your dreams long after you’ve finished it. CD Reiss knows how to seduce her readership and the narrative is packed to the rafters with her usual zingers and sharp observations that single her out from a lot of other authors in this genre. She has an uncanny knack of going beneath her words and eking out the true meaning of what is going on with her keen eye and sharp, no bulls*** sense. It’s what makes her style so wholly intoxicating and addictive.So Coda is an emotionally captivating experience as Jonathan seeks to reassert his dominion over Monica, to stop her from seeing only fragility when she looks at him. It’s extremely well crafted and beautifully rich set during a tumultuous time in their relationship, where these two impassioned characters have almost been torn apart only to cheat death at the last possible second. It’s obvious from the prose just how much the author adores her central couple, they’re treated with real love and affection and their relationship is just stunning and beautiful, despite all the inappropriate bruises! The sexual chemistry between Monica and Jonathan has always been palpable, and is a major factor as to why this series is so good. We, the readers, find ourselves yearning for them to be together forever even though events out of their hands could possibly forever keep them apart. There’s a couple of very strong scenes here that really stand out for me – deeply emotional, I suspect deeply personal and so incredibly poignant. It’s at once brutal and yet tender – a true roller-coaster of emotions.I confess to keeping a sharp eye out for some of the major players from the other ‘Songs’ series but they’re fleeting and rare and the focus is kept almost entirely on Jonathan and Monica as we immerse ourselves deeply in their story.In conclusion, I think this was a much needed chapter in their story, after the drama of Sing – we definitely needed to see the calm after the storm, to see them getting their life together back on track, however short that may turn out to be and fans of the series will adore this. It’s very sexy, very emotional – a true pleasure.4.5 borrowed time stars.

The Goddess and her King are back By Michelle_AfterDark Oh how I missed Goddess Monica and King Jonathan.I did a buddy read with my girls from After Dark Book Lovers. The text messages back and forth oh my. Me and the girls all read SoS with some other ladies on Twitter, so when I heard that Queen Christine was bringing back Jonathan and Monica, I my other ARCs to the side and dive right into Coda.I wasn't sure what I would expect, we all knew after Sing, Jonathan got a new heart. With this new heart, how would the lifestyle he and Monica had previously would take place. They did the "vanilla" thing for a few months, but Jonathan knew that it wasn't enough for his Goddess. Watch out at 10% because Dominant Jonathan comes out to play. Pain plus pleasure equals lots of orgasms for Monica. Lucky girl!There were moments my heart went out for both Jonathan and Monica. A personal struggle that Monica went through had me in tears and so upset. Yet, I wanted to hug my Ipad reading how loving Jonathan really is. I can't believe this may be the last time we get to hear from them.Thank you Christine for bringing back Jonathan and Monica.*An ARC was provided by the author for an honest review.

Groundbreaking research and writing in a vital aspect of church history By Nurya Love Parish This is among the most important books of church history I've ever read, not least because it recovers a story we desperately need today. Kevin Lowe's detailed research and his clear writing provide contemporary Christian agrarians with a heritage that empowers and encourages this continuing movement. I learned of writers, organizations and initiatives that I never knew existed, and which I will research further. His work answers an unspoken question I have lived with for years: where are the Christians who have worked through the years to glorify God through tending land and community? They are right here in these pages.
