This is a book of bits. Many forms of writing have been developed over the centuries, each presenting its matter in a different light. An epic is not a lyric. A sonnet is not a screenplay. Blank verse drama is not mistaken for the novel. But though these moulds may seem fixed yet their frontiers are fluid. Remember how New Journalism (as it was dubbed) brought the methods of fiction to factual reporting. Think how the emergent Twitter shares a border of brevity with the haiku. Though Montaigne may be acknowledged as the godfather of the formal essay, it is unlikely that anyone will be so crowned as the inventor of the blog - because simply there is no fixed model. Blogs are entirely what their authors make of them. They do not submit to a rule of 140 characters. The subject matter can slot into defined categories or be freewheeling and fancy free. The length of a post can vary from single sentences to pages. The particular nature of the blog is that it is not one single piece but rather a series of posts. And they are as much a journey of discovery for the author as for the reader. These (160 odd) posts were recorded over a two year period. Too soon to tell but maybe they show - of the form itself - that some things can be new under the sun. Here is a book of bits.

By Ray Mouton THE BEST OF THE BESTThis is the best book of its kind issued in any language in decades.Highly entertaining, immensely informative, incredibly insightful. In some places Jesse Graham manages effortlessly in a conversational tone to convey complex material in an easily understandable way. With the issuance of this wonderful volume, Graham establishes himself as one of the greatest “commentators” of this era.In “Mail From Tunis,” the author manages to comment on just about every subject under the sun. He educates the reader without beating the reader over the head, and he writes about familiar experiences the reader has had that give the reader insight into his own life. Most importantly perhaps is that “Mail From Tunis” plays out like a sweet, serious, sometimes sad, sometimes comic, often moving, occasionally poignant soundtrack of the past fifty years, bringing the reader back to and into people, places and things that have slipped the reader’s mind, but never escaped the formidable intellect of the author. There is no one alive who would not benefit personally from reading “Mail From Tunis” and everyone who reads the book will be enriched by the experience. This book is far more than the author describes in his subtitle and prologue, far more than any reader could expect.“Mail From Tunis” is simply the best of the best in this genre. There’s no other work that can touch it.There was a time in the past when we had writers who were great commentators on the times they lived in, and their presence is pretty much a thing of the past. And then Jesse Graham comes along and shows us that time is not past and we have a commentator for our time, and a brilliant one at that.Ray MoutonAuthor of “In God’s House”
