3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. funny, and inspirational By Stefani Milanese Engaging, funny, and inspirational, Hot Ice Cream is a breath of fresh air for readers everywhere. Matthew Goldberg uses the authentic interactions between himself and his innocent (and quite hilarious) son, Benny, to inspire people everywhere. He coins Benny's impromptu responses to situations as "Bennyisms," and provides an Aseops fable moral at the end of many of the Bennyism bits that apply as much to children as they do to grandparents. Goldberg's inspirational words remind us to slow down and enjoy the process of life, and in particular, the innocence and often unrecognized wisdom of children. What better way to do this than to also make us laugh? Blending humor and inspiration, Goldberg has really hit "gold" with this one. I recommend this book to anyone who feels even the slightest bit of stress (everyone, right), to those looking for inspiration, and to those looking for a good, hearty, and innocent laugh.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Fun and also Inspiring! By Book Lover I picked up a copy of "Hot Ice Cream" at a conference, at which I met this author. As he was a very good, humorous speaker, I gave the book I try. The book was terrific, and I highly recommend it.Hot Ice Cream features a variety of short anecdotes, mostly featuring the author's son in his early years. These anecdotes are referred to as "nothing/everything" moments, as they are not momentous events, but everyday moments that are easy to relate to. The stories take place at school, at home, in the car, at the park, etc. Although my wife and I don't have a son, we recognized a couple of our nephews in these stories, and they even reminded us of things our daughter said and did when she was younger. There seems to be something that all parents and grandparents can relate to here.If the goal of the book was to get us to smile and laugh, it accomplished that. But it also had a lot of wisdom throughout (there's ALSO an index of life lessons that apply to so many situations in the back) with the added benefit of encouraging us to continue to connect with others and be inspired by what surrounds us every day.

Not only does this book leave you adoring Benny, it's main voice piece, but the Bennyisms that Matt shares also get you thinking about childhood stories of people in your own circles - the funny yet often incredibly poignant and insightful things kids say that make grown-ups stop and think. A definite must-read to be reminded of the simple and humor-infused wisdom that children have to offer us, especially when we are caught up in our often too serious adult lives
