About the Author Tova Navarra is a magna cum laude art history graduate of Seton Hall University and former art teacher at Seton Hall Preparatory School, South Orange, NJ. She was the first and only designated art writer/critic in the history of the Asbury Park Press, as well as the first writer in the then-111-year history of the Press to be internationally syndicated by Copley News Service, San Diego, CA, before the Press was purchased by Gannett. Navarra is the author of more than thirty books on diverse topics, including a book of her photographs, The New Jersey Shore: A Vanishing Splendor (Philadelphia Art Alliance, 1985). One of her books, Playing It Smart, has been translated into six languages. Navarra was born in Newark in 1948 and has been an artist and published writer since age nineteen. Among her many solo exhibitions are O. K. Harris Works of Art, NYC; Gallery Axiom, Philadelphia; a fifteen-year retrospective, 1991 (and a two-person show with Santo Pezzutti, 2007), both at the 800 Gallery, Monmouth University; Atlantic City Art Center; Caldwell College; Millburn Public Library (its first art exhibition). Navarra was also invited to exhibit in Monmouth University’s Inaugural Exhibition, November 2012–March 2013, for its new Rechnitz Hall. In addition to numerous group shows including Monmouth Museum’s annual juried exhibitions, Navarra exhibited her photographs in a 1992 three-person show with Clarence H. Carter and George Segal at the Payne Gallery of Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA. She served as juror for shows including the 43rd Annual Monmouth Festival of the Arts, 2013. She is a biographical subject in Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World, from 1997 to 2015.

A secret world held in captivity by its neighbors. With Tova Navarra's new publication, the secrets and shadows are no more. This text is a concise and informative publication focusing on artists of a highly underrated community of talent. What is also so wonderful about this book is the author is a highly respected artist, art critic, and writer. There couldn't be a more well-chosen writer to front this cause. A cause to open the eyes of the art world and the intelligentsia that hold it so dear.

By James So pleased tonight to finally get an autographed copy of the book "New Jersey Artists - Through Time" by artist/author Tova Navarra. It looks more exciting to read than I even hoped. As a longtime fan of Tova's writing, since she was art critic and columnist for several NJ newspapers, she is the perfect ambassador of NJ art history as an artist's artist. I encourage all my NJ artist friends to purchase it to learn our history and to support and insure future volumes. For art collectors, it's a wonderful historical guide to collecting regional artists

On the back of the book it says there hasn't been a book published about New Jersey artists since 1964. Considering how many there are, this fact is unbelievable! If you want to find out just how many artists there are among us, you'll be amazed.You'll also find out interesting facts about the artists and have beautiful photos of their work. It goes all the way back to 1685 when John Watson was born, and covers Miriam Beerman, who was born in 1922, Seward Johnson, who made huge bronze statues, and the award-winning Rhoda Yanow, Robert Richard Toth, Vincent DiMattio of Monmouth University, Mike Quon, Kenneth Hari, Vincent Serbin, Joseph Amorino, Nancy Cohen, Amy Medford, Paul Bennett Hirsch, Stephen Breen, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and even the author herself, who has been making, exhibiting and critiquing art for decades. If you care anything about art and NJ art in particular, this book is a must.
