Chaplain Walstad's personal letters home to his family tell a story of dedication, devotion and service to God and God's people in the midst of the most trying and often dangerous of circumstances. His accounts paint a picture of World War II that you do not get in a history book.Thank you, Peggy Monahan, for sharing your grandfather's diary and thank you for the privilege of helping you publish the diary of this Godly man.

Chaplain Walstad's diary entries take the reader into the battles of World War II and, perhaps more significantly, into the lives of the individual men and officers of the American army. He gives his honest analysis of everything that happens, from the smallest squabble between two officers to the most significant events such as D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge, both of which he experienced first-hand. I was impressed by his determination to preach the gospel to all the men in his various commands, with little concern for his own safety or comfort. He seemed equally pleased with an opportunity to preach at a borrowed French cathedral or using the hood of his jeep for a pulpit in a German field close to the front lines. Anyone who wants to get a feel for what war "felt like" from platoon level will enjoy this book, as will anyone who wants to understand the role of Army chaplains in the last great war.

In addition to his normal duties, he saw to the support of the men in many ways both large and small. He was obviously a true believer in his religion and in the Christian faith in general and he worked tirelessly to serve his varied and disparate flock. If I had to find something more he might have included, it might be his observations of the army in general and how it functioned from his perspective.
