2015 INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award Finalist in Biography and War & Military2016 Midwest Book Awards Finalist in Biography and Total Book DesignAfter the fall of Fort Sumter to Confederate forces in April 1861, Dr. Norman Smith predicted ''that means war and I will go tomorrow morning if called upon.'' And so he did, two days later, as surgeon of the Massachusetts ''Old Sixth'' Regiment when it answered Lincoln's first call for troops. Best known for its fight through Baltimore, when it was attacked by a secessionist mob and met with the first deaths of the Civil War, this historic regiment provided the primary defense of Washington, D.C. while it was under siege. Regarded as the ''life of the regiment,'' Smith headed to war leaving his new bride, having previously lost four wives and all four of his children. This is a story of the resiliency of a deeply patriotic and spiritual man whose career spanned profound changes in medicine and who grappled with the wartime illness that would eventually kill him. It is also the story of a regiment whose march to save the capital captivated a country in the early days of the war, inspiring poems, songs, and artists. Its story has since been largely overlooked but it earned its place in history as the ''first to volunteer,'' ''first to give their lives,'' and ''first to reach Washington equipped and ready to defend the capital.'' M.P. McConnell vividly exposes the chaos of the first days of the Civil War when the stakes were so high including new details about the ''Old Sixth'' Regiment's camp conditions, health problems, number of Baltimore casualties, and discipline challenges at the end of its service. The medical practice of a 19th century New England doctor comes alive in the story along with details of the first amputation of the Civil War by Dr. Smith just steps away from the Capitol Rotunda in the then chambers of the U.S. Supreme Court. Richly illustrated with the first-ever gathering of period artwork and photographs chronicling the ''Old Sixth'' Regiment s service, along with extensive research into archival collections with never before published first-hand accounts from letters, diaries, and orderly books--this work will appeal to the serious historian and non-historian alike!Read more about the book at ellencarsonpublishers.com

Review "Well-researched and written biography of the Surgeon of the 6th Massachusetts at the start of the Civil War. It is an important contribution to our knowledge of the activities of that regiment in the days leading up to and subsequent to the Baltimore Riot in April 1861. For the first time, we learn more of that gallant regiment's service after Baltimore, along with little known photos of that service. This book is a most welcome addition to Civil War literature."Walter Hickey, Historian, Lowell (MA) Historical Society Genealogist, and Research Specialist with the National Archives (Retired)"Dr. Smith's story is combined with the historical background of the times including the underlying causes of the Civil War, the state of medicine during the Civil War era, and life generally during the period. The book stands as a unique and fascinating individual narrative as well as a larger case study of an Army doctor during the wartime period. The work is meticulously researched and written in an engaging manner, with the family history and the larger historical background extremely well integrated."Scott Wright, PhD, Professor of History (Retired), St. Thomas University, St. Paul MN"The author... has done extensive research and has richly illustrated this volume which is also the story of a regiment whose march through Baltimore to save Washington City inspired a nation in the early days of the conflict. All in all, a very easy to read, entertaining volume about one group of men who answered the first call to preserve the Union. Surgeon of the "Old Sixth" is recommended to our membership." Peter J. D'Onofrio, Ph. D., President, Society of Civil War Surgeons, civilwarsurgeons.org

The Life and Times of Dr. Norman Smith and the Civil War’s 6th Massachusetts By Amazon Customer The story of Norman Smith and his life and his role as "surgeon" of the Old Sixth of Massachusetts, the first unit to respond to President Lincoln's call to protect the Capital. M.P. McConnell has done the homework with lots of new information about those first turbulent days of the Civil War. A great read!

By Amazon Customer Some people are destined to live life to the fullest and make a difference; Dr. Norman Smith was certainly one of those individuals. An excellent "Sunday read", the story of the 6th Massachusetts and their surgeon is informative and engaging to the point of wanting more, especially as it relates to the story of the "6th" (perhaps a future book?). Extremely well researched and richly illustrated with photos, maps, and excerpts from manuscripts and letters, the author presents the story concisely yet with much captivating detail. We are introduced to a man with a prominent family pedigree who experiences much personal family tragedy. He is an accomplished doctor, excellent singer, humorous, deeply spiritual, and zealously patriotic. Along with his comrades in the "6th", they immediately answer President Lincoln's call to defend the Capitol, fighting their way through Baltimore and experiencing the first bloodshed of the Civil War. They are first to arrive in Washington and Lincoln credits them with "saving the Capitol". And then after three enduring months, their enlistment is over. Many of the 6th Regiment re-enlists but Dr. Smith, due to his age and health, does not. The story progresses through the doctor's life and the many medical advancements he experiences, climaxing with his amazing decision to sell his medical practice and travel to Europe late in life to study further, living life to the fullest.. The story ends with the doctor's death from the disease he undoubtedly saved many others from. Dr. Norman Smith made a difference..Very interesting with excellent historical detail about the 6th Massachusetts as it relates to their initial three month enlistment. Very personal as it relates to a man of character and talent, Dr. Norman Smith. And very modest as it relates to the author, who only casually mentions in the Preface that Dr. Norman Smith is a great-great-grandfather. Well done!

Fascinating story of an early phase of the Civil War By R Walter Bachman This biographical account of the author's great-great-grandfather brings to life two of the most fascinating early stages of the Civil War. Dr. Norman Smith, the official surgeon (as army doctors were called in those days) of the 6th Massachusetts Volunteers, found himself in the middle of two dramatic wartime scenes that followed on the heels of the bombardment of Fort Sumter that touched off the war. First, the doctor's regiment was violently attacked by a mob of pro-secessionists in Baltimore as they sought to become the first volunteer regiment to respond to Lincoln's call to protect the nation's capital. The riotous disorder of angry civilians and the blood shed by the Bay State volunteers is vividly captured in the book; they literally fought their way through to Washington. Second, as the first regiment of volunteers to come to the defense of Washington, the members of the 6th were welcomed personally by Lincoln. Shockingly, the country was so unprepared for war that there were no quarters for them: they had to be garrisoned in the chambers of the House and Senate. The Civil War is an endlessly interesting topic, and this short but very readable volume reveals to modern readers two chapters of the war that are little known today.
