1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The 101 portrait By Marco De Montis Among the many members of the prolific Land Rover family, the military Model 101 (aka. One Tonne) is one of the less known, notwithstanding its outstanding off road performance and high load and tow capacities. It was produced in low quantity (2.666 units during the period 1975-1978) but gave a sterling service till to year 2000, courtesy of its advanced technical solutions and features directly transferred to many other Land models. Author James Taylor is fully qualified on this topic due to his impressive collection of book written on the Solihull’s clan.He begins with a brief flash back on the embryonic studies carried out by Rover on the basis of a MoD requirement for a tactical vehicle with 1 ton nominal load and also able to tow the new 4,000 lbs. 105 mm howitzerThe text then flows through a detailed and interesting analysis on the first prototypes genesis, underlining the cooperation between Rover and the independent company FVDRE, particularly specialized in military vehicle design.Notwithstanding these high level skills and experiences, the development phase was a long and troublesome one. This was also due to the many requirement changes issued by the British Army. The first 101 prototype was trialled at the beginning of 1968 and was equipped with a 3,0 litre in line six engine by Rover, but after one year only it was replaced by the new V8 3,5 liter destined for the Range Rover. The new 101 conspicuously departed from the well proven Land Rover family, incorporating also the new transmission of the Range Rover and a forward control cab.Mr. Taylor then deeply treats the advanced technique of the 101 model and the operational record with British and foreign armies, characterized by many special variants for very special missions like intelligence and missile launchers. The text closes with the chapters on the special 101s built by Land Rover for the “Judge Dredd” sci-fi movie and the unlucky powered trailer developed at the beginning of the seventies. There are also some hints in a “101 owner’s guide” style that underline the spectacular performance of this peculiar Land, its voracious appetite for petrol and an expensive maintenance.A good and varied iconography rich in colour photos, drawings, tables and sketches enrich a “must have” book for all the Land fans.
