Though only reigning for nine years, Henry V is one of the most famous monarchs that England has ever had.

Unusually for his time, Henry V was born the son of an English father and an English mother: he was, in the truest sense, an English King.

In the aftermath of his father’s reign, he calmed the vying factions of nobles and united the whole of England, before leading an almost exclusively English army against the ancient foe upon the field of Agincourt.

Henry V would become the archetypal national hero, his rule, his verve, and his ideals becoming the very idea of England and giving rise to something greater: the idea of national patriotism.

To this day he is still seen by some as the originator of some of our greatest forces, a restorer of the Navy, and a founder of military, international and maritime law.

Drawing upon the chroniclers of the time and vast array of literature that has since followed across the centuries, this study goes behind Shakespeare’s immortalised hero to explore what made Henry V the king he was, debunking myths along the way.

Robert Balmain Mowat (1883-1941) was an acclaimed Scottish historian, appointed Professor of History at Bristol University in 1928. During his lifetime he wrote a number of books regarding British and European history, ranging from the Ancient World up until the late Victorian era.

Most interesting for lovers of English history By Amazon Customer Although the writing style is rather dry and scholarly, and in parts the detail is mind-numbing, this book gives a fascinating insight into a truly great king. Had he lived a longer life, he may well have had the impact of Elizabeth I, and who knows how different the English nation might have been. The book deals with Henry's works and the effects on the nation, without really giving a feel for Henry the man. Nonetheless a good read.

First, the Table of Contents is completely useless after the first page of the first chapter. The last chapter ends 13 pages before it is listed. Secondly, the author provides genealogical connections throughout. Unfortunately, the book fails to provide an index to look back on previously mentioned figures. Thirdly, despite Henry V moving throughout England and much of modern day France and Belgium, not one map is provided. In desperation, I kept a copy of Desmond Seward's One Hundred Years War nearby (which I highly recommend). Next, this is a quote from page 175: "Apart from hi; general plans of campaign, he was also excellent oi of the field of battle, arranging his small force with great success, and being distinguished from most leaders of the Middle Ages by the skill which he used the physical features of the ground where his army had to fight." I normally ignore poor writing or editing as I'm after content. In this book, it cannot be ignored. Lastly, the author seems to be driven by wonderment of Henry Vs qualities (piety, affection by the masses, strength of rule and organization) that it appears throughout the book. Criticisms standout as they are so infrequent but then quickly dismissed by further evidence (?) that then contradicts the weakness in character just described. The author uses extensive use of writings from the following decades to present a picture of Henry. Too often the author then dismisses them as lacking factual support. I gave the book two stars only because I gained some knowledge of the incessant campaigns between England and France immediately after the battle of Agincourt.

That question so many folk ask "who would you like to have at your dinner table" mine has always been Henry V. he has fascinated me since childhood in school, he is the epitome of a romantic King while being very quiet, withdrawn and deep but if you hit the right subject would open up and talk for hours. Not handsome but with features that draw you to him so that his looks nor his appearance are secondary. Having studied English History both in Boarding school and in The London Polytechnic, this book has a few arguable points but then any book of this nature has those I think it's for each reader to find their own way.
