A Final Harvest is a series of stories about growing up in rural mid-century America, the community of characters that populate that time, and the way of life fashioned by parents who experienced both the Great Depression and World War II. Topics both large and small including Prohibition, Woman's Suffrage, POW camps, the Salk vaccine, farming, canning and old-fashioned discipline are revealed in "For My Girlfriend", "Something in Return", "Night", and "The Finest Thing". These chapters bring back the reality, pain, and humor from that time in history, and provide insight on why the emotional bonds to that era are so powerful for those who lived the events in these stories. The closing section of A Final Harvest ties together these events in a summary about aging and death in modern-day America, and offers a touchstone of reflection on how we cope as our loved ones decline and disappear, a touchstone interpreted through each reader's personal experience....

Tough and Gentle By Ed Wever This is an excellent book, with the rhythm and pace of a country narrator combined with the sophisticated background of a scholar. The author knows how to build a subtle tension and hold it until a quiet release at just the right point. There is genuine feeling in these stories and no overdone sentimentality. I thought ‘Night” and “For My Girlfriend” were especially moving. In several cases, storytelling is wrapped around a traditional way of life. For example, the highly detailed and scientific treatment of the sap-boiling process is arrived at naturally as part of the author’s narrative—as always, with a double-edge to it, being interwoven with his father’s reminiscences of his Navy experiences in WWII—and works as well as anything I have read by such greats as John McPhee. The clarity and interpretive beauty of the writing make this book worth the read.— Ed Wever

Most of the tales in A Final Harvest could have happened in any small town and may jog the reader's own memories. I saved the reading of this book for long periods of time when I could savor every word, every remembrance, and every relationship to my own life; take time to enjoy the challenge of solving the mystery of people, places, or events described but not totally revealed at the beginnings of chapters; and even reread some of the exquisitely-written sentences and paragraphs. I experienced more emotions with this book than with any other I've read, including crying my way through "Autumn" and "Winter", knowing that husband and I, even though we act and pretend and actually sometimes believe we are still in our "Summers" are close to those later seasons that sit just around the corner waiting to snatch us. What a treasure. There is so much to love about this book.Marjorie Feathers

Neighbors All, By Betty Jo Sundstrom A Final Harvest preserves so much shared history of small New England towns: For those who grew up in that setting, these memories are ours, no matter where we reside. The book transported me back to so many places and events: to our “Old One Room School” where the last Shaker Brother came to talk to us of their unique way of life; to the Town Hall and the March of Dimes dances held there; to a time when farmers shared equipment and labor; to a place where, when you were old enough to work, throwing hay bales was everyone’s summer job.For those fortunate enough to have grown up during this period in history, these pages will bring back cherished memories. For others, enjoy our story and you will find the answer to: “What did they do before they had -------------.”John Sundstrom
