Italy Invades, full of restless adventurers, canny generals, and the occasional scoundrel, is a fast-paced and compelling read, the perfect sequel to America Invades. Recreating their success with America Invades, Christopher Kelly and Stuart Laycock take another global tour, this time starting from Italy and exploring that country's military involvements throughout the ancient and modern worlds. From the empire building of the Romans, through the globe-spanning Age of Exploration, to the multinational cooperation of NATO, Italy has conquered and explored countries as diverse and far-ranging as Cape Verde and Mongolia and Uruguay. With the additional guide of maps and photographs, the reader can visually follow the Italians as they conquer the world. The book also contains an excerpt from the never before published An Adventure in 1914, written by Christopher Kelly's maternal great-grandfather, Thomas Tileston Wells. Wells served as the American consul general to Romania each summer; and in the summer of 1914, as war exploded across Europe, he was there with his wife and two children.

Review ''I had no idea that Lincoln wanted to hire Garibaldi to command the Union Army! This book is packed with startling revelations from the Roman Legionnaires fighting with a gladius to Italian Eurofighter Typhoons scrambling to intercept Russian planes in the Baltic in 2015. An amazing world tour.'' --General Barry McCaffrey, US Army

For that matter, who even remembers that Peru attacked their neighbor over a territorial dispute, just months before Pearl Harbor? These and many other interesting facts and stories about the military adventures and misadventures of Italians throughout the world can be found in "Italy Invades".Having researched the military service of my grandfather and father in World War I and World War II, I knew that grandpa's US Army unit was part of an Allied intervention force that included a contingent of Italian troops. I also knew that the US Navy patrol frigate that my dad served aboard had participated in anti-submarine warfare training exercises with an Italian Navy submarine as its sparring partner. So I'm quite impressed to find that, within their sections on Russia and Cuba, the authors of "Italy Invades" have included references to the Italian military presence in both of these obscurities. As a bonus for his readers, Christopher Kelly has included an appendix titled "An Adventure in 1914", which is his great-grandfather's first-hand account of how his family's summer holiday on the Austria-Italy frontier was rudely interrupted by the start of World War I.

Italy Invades By Mr Francis F Kyle Italy Invades is a fine new study devoted to a niche which needed filling, the military involvement of Italians across the many centuries back to antiquity in the affairs of every other country in the world. It's a massive subject, which has clearly called for exceptionally wide-ranging research, yielding all kinds of extraordinary pieces of curious information, as well as providing a splendid excuse (for this particular armchair traveller) to revisit many locations, not a few of these now sadly no longer accessible on account of political issues (in some instances, indeed, these have now acquired the sad status of failed states). The subject also benefits from the authors' impartiality, as this is not a book with a thesis, but provides an ideal stimulus for anyone with an interest in military history to get acquainted with battlefield sites in many agreeable locations.
