Case Study of Abuse Effects By Fiction Author Rhoda D'Ettore The could be used as a case study for what happens to abuse victims and the intense problems they MAY suffer throughout their lives (everyone is different).I read this 204 pages or so overnight. It held my interest and tells the TRUE somber tale of a family torn apart while some kids are put in foster homes and adopted and others are not. The two children are adopted at very young ages by a man and woman who abuse them in various ways, and the story becomes vile. The daughter goes on to be abused by many people in her life, and deals with it the best way possible. She eventually finds her biological family and meets her future spouse who is her support through various physical and psychological issues. It is a sad tale that ends with a bright spot of the author finding her rock, her true love, friend and soul mate.We see the inner struggle of a victim of abuse fighting with the hate and rage the abuse produced. A one point, the author does an excellent job of showing an almost split personality of the inner child who wants to forgive and love the parents, and the abused adult who hates and wants justice. There are two letters at the end, one written to the abuser and another written to his second wife who had nothing to do with the abuse. These letters show the pure contempt the author feels and are very personal in nature. My criticism: This needs an editor. It bounces around time wise, and would probably be best if written in a more linear fashion. After awhile, there are no more paragraph structures and it reads like a personal diary or journal entry. Some of the issues brought up are things that happen to every kid so the impact the author wants to make is not as effective as she might want. All kids are bullied at one point or another, all kids feel self conscious at one point (especially in locker rooms during puberty). There are so many horrible things that happen in this book--abusive and criminal acts committed by so many different people, it makes one wonder if it could all possibly be true. Also, it gives the impression that all men are evil, which could reflect badly on lesbians (the author is married to a woman). I wouldn't want readers to get the impression that all lesbians are man haters. I think only one man in the entire book had any redeeming qualities whatsoever. Even the handyman who visited the battered woman's shelter was bad. Some of the things are repeated several times, making them redundant. It also needs proper formatting.i think this book could be helpful to people suffering from PTSD due to abuse, or struggling to go on after such events. I would have liked to have seen a chapter on ways the author deals with such things... organizations that are helpful.. support groups.. coping skills that help her. Really, the only thing that she discusses about these are writing the book, meeting her wife and writing angry letters to two people who don't even care what she has to say.Good luck to that author, both in her writing and in her recovery.

I feel so sorry for this person and the difficult position she was placed in. I am so sorry I did not recognize the signs and report this abuse to the authorities. As I read this story I cringe from the abuse she went though and the terrible feeling she felt. I have not finished the book yet but I do look forward to seeing how she overcame these obstacles and became the wonderful, fun loving person she is today.
