From the earliest resthouses serving travelers on the Overland Route between Britain and Bombay to the grand Edwardian palaces on the Nile that made Egypt the exotic alternative to wintering on the Riviera, the hotels of Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan were always about far more than just bed and board. As bridgeheads for African exploration, neutral territories for conducting diplomacy, headquarters for armies, providers of home comforts for writers, painters, scholars, and archaeologists in the field, and social hubs for an international elite, more of importance happened in Egypt's hotels than in any other setting. It was through the hotels that visitors from the west-the earliest adventurers, then the travelers and, finally, the tourists-experienced the Orient. This book tells the stories of Egypt's historic hotels (including the Cecil, Shepheard's, the Mena House, Gezira Palace, Semiramis, Winter Palace, and Cataract) and some of the people who stayed in them, from Amelia Edwards, Lucie Duff Gordon and Florence Nightingale to Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, Winston Churchill, and TE Lawrence.

"Grand Hotels of Egypt" is a remarkable and entertaining book"--Cairo 360"Andrew Humphreys' "Grand Hotels of Egypt" takes readers back two centuries to an Egypt of socialites and celebrities. Harris Andrew Humpreys research of his book Grand Hotels of Egypt is beyond reproach. He has certainly done his homework. Being a resident in Cairo in the late 1970s to early 1980s gave me a love and appreciation of the old hotels and architecture in the buildings of Cairo. I could not put the book down. Appart from his incredible knowledge on the subject, he is an excellent writer, and the layout, photos, and illustrations throughout the book are a credit to him and the designer, Gadi Farfour. This is best book I have ever read on the subject (and I have read them all). Well done -- you brought a nostalgic tear to my eye.C. Harris

There are hundreds on ancient history and Egyptology, tens of photography/coffee book ones – few of them are any good and the good ones are out of circulation; then you got your lonely planets, a few books by academics trying to go mainstream (boring, tackle very specific subjects, and always around the $100 mark), and more recently memoirs, mostly written by the even expanding Egyptian diaspora. Books that do not fall into one of the above categories are few and far between. This is one of them. I know hotels pretty well, and I know hotels in Egypt quite well, from the 1800s to present – its what I do for a living. This hotel really tackles a subject that opens up Egypt to the reader in more ways that you can imagine. The stories, the characters, the history, the architecture, and the allure of Egypt as one of the greatest destinations for travel and migration in the 19th century, its all there and captured in a well written and light reading manner by the author. This is not a subject that is easy to tackle given the research difficulties that plague any writer who wants to understand Egypt in the last 200 years, let alone capture its history visually. This was done here with a good outcome, and I can only imagine that this first edition will be the foundation for more editions to come as the author updates it with more pictures, knowledge and stories - there is a lot that still needs to be told about Egypt's grand hotels in the age of travel. Buy this book if you want a travel book, a history book, a picture book and a book about stories, all in one. I highly recommend it.
