About the Author
Ann Michler Lewis grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, where she lived from 1944 to 1967. She graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and then taught English at Duluth East High School, her alma mater. Since 1972, she has lived with her family in Saint Paul, Minnesota, making periodic pilgrimages back "home" to Lake Superior. She has privately published a book of poems and sailing stories called My Duluth, now out of print.

Withers Ann Lewis, through this book, has opened my eyes to the shipping industry of the Great Lakes, especially in Lake Superior. Since I love new experiences through reading, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Lewis's work. She tells the story of her father, a dedicated sea man who became a ship's captain in due time. It's interesting to have her point of view, so I got a glimpse of not only life on the ship but also the life of the captain's family on land. I particularly enjoyed reading her personal experiences sailing on her father's ships. I pulled out my phone and looked up maps when needed, as I am not very familiar with the Great Lakes area. Some of the technical terms left me puzzled, so I would have liked a little clarification that could have helped this land lubber understand a little more fully.

By Amazon Customer In her short but fascinating memoir, Ann Michler Lewis' descriptive style brings to life the reality of a family's rhythm and life as defined by the shipping seasons of the Great Lakes. She contrasts missing her father during his many voyages with the thrill of his return. The landscape of Ann's life is formed through the strength of her incredible mother as well as time spent with her father aboard the massive ships. She describes with wonderful imagery many of her experiences as a child on these voyages. This provided her with great appreciation and insight into her father's intellect and creativity. Through this, she also gained great respect and a love for Lake Superior.

The author and her family were "people of the lake," continually adjusting their lives to the rhythms of the shipping calendar for the Great Lakes. Looking back at her childhood years, Lewis evokes the feelings, fears, joys, fantasies, and pastimes of a child observing her father doing his work navigating the inland waterways. Her writing contains heartwarming descriptions and firsthand accounts, beautiful imagery, humor, snippets of seamen's language, photos, and much more. A fascinating historical journey and a book well worth the read.
